Zee brings first English-language South Asian reality show to U.S, ropes in Lexus & Wells Fargo

MUMBAI: Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL), a worldwide content company, is breaking new boundaries globally by making a tremendous impact in the U.S. The organisation’s leading Hindi channel, Zee TV, which was the first Hindi channel to be launched in the U.S. in 1998, is now making its presence felt in Hollywood.

‘Made In America’ has attracted some of the respected brands such as Lexus, All State Insurance, and Wells Fargo bank as sponsors.

As of August 2017, Zee TV Americas launched the first English-language South Asian reality show, ‘Made In America.’ The show is entirely produced and filmed in the U.S.A. and marks the first time that a channel of Indian origin is producing content at a global scale for international audience.

The show centers around six South Asian millennial women who were chosen from a nationwide search in the United States, which drew in over 6,000 applicants. Hosted by Nina Davuluri, the first-ever Indian American woman to be crowned Miss America, the six women are mentored by Nina as they are pushed to their limits for over a period of 10 weeks in various types of training, while competing to win the coveted title of ‘Made In America.’

Zee TV Americas CEO Sameer Targe states, “We realised that there was a need in the marketplace to reach a younger South Asian audience who have an enormous desire to be in the glamour world. Zee TV, being the flagship television network for south Asians in the United States, we decided to launch ‘Made In America’ to fulfill their Hollywood dreams, and create a platform for them to be able to showcase their talents.”

As each episode focuses on one specific challenge ranging from an array of categories, at the end of each episode a winner is chosen, leading to a final single winner in the season finale of the show, which will air on 12 October, 2017.

Zee TV Americas is the first South Asian network to indigenously create such original content, both developed & produced in Hollywood. Viewers can expect an array of new programs produced in the U.S. by Zee, which will air on the channel throughout 2017 and 2018.

The newly developed shows will center around a variety of genres and topics. From a reality series where professional matchmakers will seek suitable matches for the participants, leading to a possible wedding in the finale, to a biographical series based on successful Indian American entrepreneurs and philanthropists in which their journey to success stories are shared. The channel will also be airing a first of its kind business show and game show. The business show will give hopeful entrepreneurs an opportunity to present their products and ideas to a panel of expert investors for a chance to have their product invested in, whereas the game show will give families across America a platform to compete with one another in various subjects to win the title of, ‘America’s Smartest Family.’

As Zee TV Americas broadens its footprint in programming catered towards its current subscribers as well as millennials, the network has assured that the highly anticipated content that it has created will be like nothing that its viewers have seen before on any other South Asian channel.

  • After dominating TV and digital, ZEE Americas to enter radio and event management

After dominating TV and digital, ZEE Americas to enter radio and event management

MUMBAI:  In 1998, Zee TV incubated the South Asian TV market in North America. Over the next 17 years the brand has not only become synonymous with entertainment but also an ambassador of Indian culture, abroad. As per Nielsen US, a typical South Asian viewer spends an average of 2 hours 13 minutes per day watching Zee TV, making it one of the most loved channels in the US, including the mainstream ones.

After being the consistent #1 TV network – ZEE US successfully ventured into the digital space in 2012 with Zee Dil Se, a video-based social media, that allows people to record a ‘Broadcast quality’ personalized video message and push it on TV at a click! The Dil Se platform was later on used to solve the local auditions problem thus allowing thousands of NRIs to participate in reality shows like DID and SRGMP.

Later in the fall of 2013, ZEE US launched a localized version of www.india.com with a positioning of ‘Proudly Indian’. In a short span of one year the site delivers 7 million unique visitors per month, just from US and Canada alone, thus making it one of the top sites for NRIs in North America. The site already has all the leading advertisers from TV with annual spend commitments. India.com serves as a one-stop destination for news from India, Community News from US and Canada, Bollywood, Cricket, blogs, event ticketing and classifieds.

Now ZEE is all geared up to get into the Radio and Event management space. Initially the services will be started in the top 5 south Asian DMAs. A respective business head supported by the operations team will head each of these verticals.

“As a market leader we have to constantly reinvent and redefine our value proposition to our consumers. We have been looking at need gaps and the two most visible opportunities sprung up that matched our strengths. A strong 55% of South Asians use personal transport 5 times a week for an average of 28 minutes per day, either for work or leisure and a strong 27% of South Asian woman are non-working (Stay at home) at any given point in time but do not have access to good Indian RJs. Of the 600 plus, small & large South Asian events that take place in USA, only a handful manage to put up a good show and attract a couple of blue chip sponsors. The rest all struggle or depend on individual donations/sponsors to make ends meet. The most worrying sign at these events is the declining footfalls of the youth. The mainstream brands completely recognize the arrival of the Indian community in USA but are hesitant to invest their dollars given the unorganized nature. These opportunities will allow us not only to bring companion like RJs or entertain the South Asian community with exciting and enriching events (like an Indian Rock concert or an Asian Indian corporate leadership summit) but also bring bigger and better sponsors to the market thus expanding the total market states Sameer Targe, Business Head – Zee Americas.

  • Zee takes the ‘Super Moms’ to North America

Zee takes the ‘Super Moms’ to North America

MUMBAI: After the successful DID Super Moms in India, Zee TV is all set to travel abroad. The stage is set and the doors are open for DID Super Moms North America. With more than 20,000 videos and ground activations across 16 cities it gives a platform to those women who gave up their dreams of becoming a dancer and settled for a career, family and motherhood.

With this move, it aims to give hope to millions of mothers across North America who aspire to make a name for themselves in the field of dance.

With digital being the way forward, the channel is focusing strongly on digital platforms. The first phase stared with digital auditions on 15 August where talented moms can log on to www.zeedilse.com/auditions  – record or upload a two minute audition video along with telling  what makes them a super mom!

Ground auditions across 16 cities will start from 15 September till 30 September after which 50 contestants will be shortlisted for the mega auditions to be held in October in New York City. The 10 finalists will then be selected to compete in DID Super Moms North America grand finale to take place in December.

Zee TV Americas general manager Sameer Targe believes that although America is the land of drams, reality is very different. “Life comes in the way – kids, school, job, family takes precedence over dreams and gradually, dreams fade away. DID Super Moms North America is our way of giving it back to those moms who gave up their passion for dancing in lieu of family responsibilities.”

  • CRTC dismisses ATN’s complaint against Zee TV Canada

CRTC dismisses ATN’s complaint against Zee TV Canada

MUMBAI: The CRTC has dismissed the complaint filed by Asian Television Network (ATN) which had raised objections with the operations of Zee TV Canada. According to the compliant, Zee TV Canada, which fell in the third-language niche specialty category B service, was operating as a general interest service. In view of the complaint filed by ATN on 29 July 2013 against Ethnic Channels Group, the Commission has now given its decision in favour of ECGL.

After posting the complaint on its website, the Commission received over 300 interventions. A vast majority of interventions supported ECGL’s position and opposed the position of ATN. A large proportion stated outright that Zee TV Canada’s programming does target women as a viewing audience. Others voiced general support for the service or characterized Zee TV Canada as family focused.

“The overwhelming support we received from Zee TV Canada viewers has been truly heart-warming,” said Ethnic Channels Group CEO Slava Levin.

“The complaint had no basis to start with, and we are glad that justice has prevailed,” added Ethnic Channels Group president Hari Srinivas.

“We are pleased with the outcome of this decision and value the continued support of our viewers,” said Zee TV Americas business head Sameer Targe.

According to ECGL, Zee TV Canada is adhering to its nature of service, and its marketing activities focus on that nature of service. ECGL alleged that the complaint filed by ATN is an attempt to entrench the privileged position of SATV. It argued that to reclassify Zee TV Canada as a general interest service would have the effect of significantly expanding the scope and impact of the above-noted buy-through requirement.

The Commission examined the programming offered by Zee TV Canada with a view to determining whether a reasonably frequent viewer, in watching various programs broadcast on the service, would conclude that the service targets women or not. In this regard, and despite the differences in the public policy objectives behind the licensing of Zee TV Canada and W Network, the Commission has considered it appropriate to use W Network as a baseline for comparison in its examination of Zee TV Canada’s programming due to the considerable weight placed by both parties on comparing the two services.

Having examined the programming broadcast on Zee TV Canada the Commission found that the majority of the programs broadcast are consistent with those that one would expect a niche service targeting women to air, and are comparable to those found on W Network.

We are proud to announce a new partnership with Zee TV, the number one South Asian channel, along with its family of networks, and the South Asian International Film Festival on its historic 10th year anniversary.”

The line-up showcases a combination of films from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, thus promoting the multi-cultural diversity that is prevalent in the South Asian community in US.
