  • NewsX-MRC Exit Poll: BJP leads in UP, Punjab Congress vs AAP

MUMBAI: As the political battle for power in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa drew to a close after the last vote was cast in the final phase of the Assembly Elections, NewsX-MRC Exit Poll gave a clear indication of how the voters cast their ballot for the ultimate show of power in the states which went to polls.

The results of the NewsX-MRC Exit Poll indicate that Uttar Pradesh looks all set for a major overhaul with the BJP making inroads to the seat of power in the state while the SP-Cong alliance tries to give them a run for their money; Punjab offers an interesting mix with a severe jolt to the ruling SAD-BJP combine as Congress and AAP go neck-and-neck in the crucial state; BJP may form a government in Uttarakhand; the Goans seem to be mixed in their reception as BJP, Congress and AAP all seem to be getting a piece of the pie.

NewsX-MRC Exit Poll data from Uttar Pradesh suggests the state may see a major swing of fortunes for the BJP and the party may finally take the mantle of governance from the Samajwadi Party with the BJP projected to win 185 (+/- 3) seats. The SP-Congress alliance is projected to bag 120 (+/- 3) seats while the BSP comes third with 90 (+/- 3) seats.

Punjab is another potboiler with a big change in the air as the ruling SAD-BJP combine seems to be taking a massive hit. The Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have come out as the biggest gainers from the scenario as they both are predicted to win 55 (+/- 3) seats each.

NewsX-MRC Exit Poll data on Uttarakhand projects that the BJP may emerge as the winner with 38 (+ /- 3) seats. The poll data further suggests that the Congress is a close second with 30 (+/- 3) seats.

NewsX-MRC Exit Poll survey for the recently concluded Goa Assembly Elections gives an indication of a hung house with BJP bagging 15 (+/- 3) seats while the Congress will get 10 (+/- 3) seats. In such a scenario, it would be interesting to see what role AAP plays which is predicted to make it big on 7 (+/- 3) seats.

UP govt, blames media for increase in violence against women

NEW DELHI: The Uttar Pradesh government has blamed the vulgarity and violence shown on television for the increase in cases of rape and violence against women.

After Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav’s statement, the party’s national general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav who is cousin of Mulayam Singh Yadav and uncle to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, blamed increase in crime against women to “vulgarity, obscenity and violence shown on the television channels.” He added: “Young boys also have easy access to magazines with pornographic material and pictures,” he said.

When Mulayam Singh Yadav was asked about increase in violence against women he said, “You do your work and let us do our work.”

Earlier, even Akhilesh Singh Yadav had blamed the media. Both Mulayam Singh and Ram Gopal followed suit asking why the media was only highlighting criminal incidents of Uttar Pradesh but is ignoring other states. “But the media does not report that,” he said, adding that “if you search on Google, you will find many rape incidents in other states, too.”

The SP leadership had earlier blamed media for Muzaffarnagar riots.

Enquiry by PCI begins in Azam Khan whipping statement

NEW DELHI: The Press Council of India has started its enquiry into the complaints relating to senior Uttar Pradesh Minister Azam Khan’s whipping statement on bureaucracy by asking the editors of the newspapers to explain their side of the story.

Azam Khan had allegedly said in a meeting in Samajwadi Party office at Lucknow on 30 January 2013 that the officers understand only the language of whipping, but the next day his official statement came that such media reports were baseless and had been done to tarnish his image and that of his government.

In view of the credibility of Media, social activist Dr Nutan Thakur had requested PCI Chairman Justice Markandey Katju to conduct a detailed enquiry in the matter so as to bring the truth of whether the initial media reports regarding his whipping statements are correct or not, which will also clarify the situation about his later denials.

  • Govt to make amendments only after consultation: PM

Govt to make amendments only after consultation: PM

NEW DELHI: News channels can take a breather with prime minister Manmohan Singh hinting at a broader consultation with all stakeholders before coming out with any amendments that would put curbs on news coverage.

The PM on Wednesday assured editors of news broadcasters that any changes in the act will only be taken up “after the widest possible consultation with all the stakeholders and eliciting their different points of view on the proposed changes.”

In a brief statement, the PM office said that the PM has received “several representations from the media agencies regarding certain proposed changes in the Cable Television Network Rules currently under consideration.”

Thus, the PM has put the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, which was seen as a gag act on media, on hold for now.

Earlier, the government had been contemplating some changes in the act and the rules under it in view of what it perceives to be the “excessive and exaggerated” coverage of the tragic terrorist attack in Mumbai on 26 November and the “continual” coverage thereon.

The Act now monitors stories on sex, crime, footage of narco-analysis admissions and others.

Editors of news channels have been trying to mobilise political support and have met BJP President Rajnath Singh, LK Advani, and AICC president Sonia Gandhi to express their concerns over the proposed amendments.

Gandhi said that she and the Congress party believed that “the freedom of the press should not be compromised.” She further assured that a “middle way” would be found to solve the problem.

Several political leaders such as Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechury have extended their support to news broadcasters. Yechury, for instance, said his party had asked the government to form an independent regulatory board for the media industry.

Karat has written a letter to PM saying, “Our Party is of the opinion that there should be no hasty step taken regarding media regulation. Apart from the self-regulatory mechanism put in place by the news channels, it is necessary to have co-regulation through an independent regulatory body. How this is to be done has to be discussed and a common approach arrived at. Till then, no steps should be taken to empower the government and the administration to further regulate the news channels.”
