Bodyguard becomes first Bollywood film to collect Rs 1 bn in 1st week

MUMBAI: Salman Khan’s Bodyguard has made the fastest run to the Rs 1 billion milestone in India’s box office history. The movie collected Rs 1.05 billion in its first week, bettering performances from other super hits like 3 Idiots and Dabaang.

“The historic performance at the box office has been helped by the mass following of Salman Khan, the good pairing of Khan and Kareena Kapoor and the extended weekend,” Reliance Entertainment CEO Sanjeev Lamba told Indiantelevision.com.

Reliance Entertainment carried out an aggressive campaign and chalked out a wide release of the film. “This is also the first film of Salman Khan that has got a bumper opening in the US and is doing exceedingly well in the UK, Australia and New Zealand,” added Lamba.

In the overseas circuit, the film has grossed ?840,000 from UK and $1,051,132 from US during the extended weekend.

Meanwhile, another film in which Reliance Entertainment is involved is doing well. The Ajay Devgn-starrer Singham has mopped up Rs 1 billion in its sixth week. The film grossed Rs 510 million in its first week.

Said Lamba, “A hard-hitting story, the wonderful combination of director Rohit Shetty and star Ajay Devgn and some amazing action sequences have resulted in an extremely successful run for the film. Singham is the first mainstream film produced by Reliance Entertainment and we are very pleased with the results.”

    Salman’s Bodyguard opens strong

MUMBAI: Salman Khan‘s Bodyguard has made the most of Eid-day release with the Ganeshotsav holiday following a day later. The movie collected Rs 411 million in these two days itself.

The collections softened somewhat on Friday and Saturday to peak again on Sunday to end its five-day weekend with a whopping Rs 889.5 million.

Made on a production budget of Rs 620 million, the print and promotion cost would peg the total cost of the movie at over Rs 800 million. The smart release strategy has, undoubtedly had a role to play in keeping Reliance Entertainment‘s recent good run going with a worthy grosser in the wake of Singham.

While Bodyguard may have limited repeat value and show a decline at multiplexes, its collections at single screen are still holding on.

With its impressive opening overseas and an assured following on satellite and video market, Bodyguard is sure to prove an earner if not a goldmine!

Shabri with Rs 2.64 million, Yeh Dooriyan with Rs 2.72 million and Chitkabrey with Rs 1.62 million in their first-week run prove poor contenders.

Aarakshan collected Rs 43 million in its third week to take its total to Rs 372 million.

Singham, having come to an end of its successful run, added Rs 11 million in its fifth week to take its tally to Rs 999.5 million.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara collected Rs 11 million in its seventh week to take its total up to rs 866 million.

Murder2 mopped up Rs 489.5 million at the end of eight weeks.

  • Rajshri breaks distribution practice for Jaana Pehchana release

Rajshri breaks distribution practice for Jaana Pehchana release

MUMBAI: Breaking away from the current practice of releasing a film with more that 1,500 prints, Rajshri Productions has decided to release its upcoming film Jaana Pehchana with a single print in Mumbai on 16 September. It will have 29 prints distributed in other parts of the country.

Moreover, the production house is planning to release the print in the good old reel format instead of the present-day digital style. “It makes better sense to release a film this way. We believe its content is good and if we get positive feedback from the audience, we will increase the number of prints,” Rajshri‘s head of distribution and marketing P S Ramanathan said in a statement.

It may be recollected that Rajshri‘s Hum Aapke Hain Kaun had a similar distribution plan: It released in Mumbai with one print and had 29 prints sent across the other parts of the country.

“The rationale behind the limited release of that film was that most cinema halls at that time didn‘t have the stererophonic sound systems that we needed for the film. Salman Khan‘s Maine Pyaar Kiya was also released with just 18 prints in 1989 and we ended up releasing the film in more than 1,800 screens,‘” Ramanathan added.

Jaana Pehchana is a sequel to the Sachin-Ranjeeta-starrer Ankhiyon Ke Jharoke Se that released way back in 1978. The film starts off where Ankhiyon Ke Jharoke Se ended, with Ranjeeta‘s character‘s death due to cancer. The second installment has been directed by Sachin himself and tells the story of middle-aged Arun Mathur, who is still grieving for his high-school love.

  • Bodyguard: A Salman Khan film all the way

Bodyguard: A Salman Khan film all the way

Mumbai : Atul Agnihotri‘s Bodyguard is like a sequel to recent successful Salman Khan movies and, in keeping with the trend of sequels, can be called Super Human 4; the film relies solely on Salman Khan and the action choreographed around him.

Like all film heroes, he can take on a dozen or more goons and has made a reputation out of it; he can fight like a robot. The film has been adapted from the Tamil film Kaavalan that was also made in other South Indian languages. Like many South Indian films, the story swings between feudal and modern era.

Raj Babbar is some sort of feudal lord whose word is the law and justice in his town. He crosses paths with a flesh trade gang run by Aditya Panscholi, Mahesh Manjrekar, Chetan Hansraj and their goons who sell young girls abroad.Wanting to get even with Babbar, they decide to kidnap his daughter, Kareena Kapoor.

Enter Salman Khan, a bodyguard deployed to protect her while she goes to hostel to finish her studies along with her friend and confidante, Hazel Keech. His boss Sharat Saxena assures Babbar that Salman is worth an army of guards and can take on any number of villains which is amply demonstrated by Salman Khan on the onset when he rescues the girls meant for export at Raj Babbar‘s behest.

Kareena Kapoor has no clue why she needs a bodyguard. The arrangement does not quite go well with her, whose idea of campus life is not one where a bodyguard lingers around all the time, be it in a class room or canteen. She plots to distract Khan by assuming a false name and starting to call him on his cell phone, thus luring him into romance.

That is until an attempt is made to kidnap her from a disco. Seeing Salman Khan‘s courage as he saves her from a horde of attackers, she instantly falls in love with him. That accounts for the romance part of the film as Kareena Kapoor loves Salman Khan, who in turn loves Chhaya, which is the identity Kareena assumed when making the calls.

As Salman Khan vanquishes all the bad guys and thinks that he will go back to his phone lover Chhaya, he is separated from Kareena whose friend Hazel Keech ends up marrying him as Chhaya till she conveniently dies of some ‘bimari‘ leaving behind a stereotypical bespectacled child to bring together the lovers, Salman and Kareena Kapoor, who too thought it was prudent to stay single.

Bodyguard is totally a script of convenience – the kind dished out in the 1950s and ‘60s – where everything falls in place as if on cue. There is nothing original or novel that one has not seen before. The direction is ordinary. Music is generally mediocre; a love story merits a much better score. Dialogue is routine and the comedy lacks humour. Photography is good.

Performance-wise, it is a Salman Khan film all the way as he alternates between spreading his charm and flexing his muscles. Kareena Kapoor is good, doing better in emotional scenes. Hazel Keech makes a single expression last throughout the film. Raj Babbar carries himself well while Rajat Rawail‘s attempts at comedy falls flat. The bad men have little to do except emerge suddenly for a few actions scenes and they are adequate.

The film is a run-of-the-mill story with its saviours being Salman Khan‘s current popularity coupled with Eid and Ganpati holiday release and the ensuing weekend which gives it five days of free run to make the most of its about 2,700 screen release before it runs out of steam.
