  • Jacqueline Fernandez gears up for a power packed 2015

Jacqueline Fernandez gears up for a power packed 2015

MUMBAI: Actress Jacqueline Fernandez is Bollywood’s busy girl these days.

The actress, who was seen in Kick opposite Salman Khan last year, spoke about her future plans and hectic schedule in a candid chat. During the chat, she revealed her love for acting and how stardom, no matter at what stage she may have achieved it, still affects her in some ways.

The long-legged Sri Lankan beauty had a very slow 2013 with almost no offers, but having passed that phase, she is now happy and grateful to Sajid Nadiadwala and Salman Khan for giving her the opportunity of a lifetime with Kick.

The actress said, “Last year I finished a Hollywood film, Definition of Fear, a Sri Lankan movie, According to Matthew and a cameo in Bangistaan. I’ve been shooting for Brothers since.”

Brothers is produced by Karan Johar and directed by Karan Malhotra, where for the first time she plays the role of a wife and young mother alongside Akshay Kumar. “For the first time, I was bringing something to the table. It was liberating to finally bag a meaningful role,” confessed Fernandez.

Not only that, after a busy 2014, this year also the actress has loads to look forward to with Dhishoom opposite Varun Dhawan, which goes on floors next month and Turbanator with Tiger Shroff, followed by Sajid Nadiadwala’s Housefull 3. “I’m greedy and trying to squeeze in one more movie in 2015,” she exclaimed with a smile.

  • Nawazuddin Siddique to shoot for two Khans back to back

Nawazuddin Siddique to shoot for two Khans back to back

MUMBAI: Nawazuddin Siddique is certainly on a career high. Not only has he defied all the norms with the incredible roles that he has earned for himself in several movies this past year, he has also earned the repute of being perhaps the most promising unconventional leading hero in today’s time.

His recent release, Badlapur has earned him some of the best reviews of his career with reports of audience bursting into applause each time he enters the screen with his quirky punch lines. Though the actor has too little time to relish this success, he will now be seen sharing screen space back to back with Bollywood’s biggest Khans. Starting off with Bajrangi Bhaijaan starring Salman Khan, Siddique will simultaneously rehearse for his role in Rais with Shah Rukh Khan.

This is interesting as both the Khans are always pitted against each other and this time Siddique seems to be the common factor between the two. Co-incidentally both the films will be shot back to back and will have their schedules interspersed with Siddique being a part of both the films.

He will start off the rehearsals for Rais in March while he continues to shoot for Bajrangi Bhaijaan around the same time.

  • NDTV Fortis Cancerthon raises funds for kids with Cancer

NDTV Fortis Cancerthon raises funds for kids with Cancer

MUMBAI: It is a rare person in this world who has not battled cancer – some of us directly, and almost all of us indirectly, through the pain of a loved one.

American scientist and physician Siddhartha Mukherjee calls it The Emperor of all Maladies. ”Cancer, we now know, is a disease caused by the uncontrolled growth of a single cell… Cell division allows us as organisms to grow, to adapt, to recover, to repair — to live. And distorted and unleashed, it allows cancer cells to grow, to nourish, to adapt, to recover, and to repair — to live at the cost of our living.”

India is combating cancer with new cures, superior treatments, networked care giving and financial aid. Yet, every year 10 lakh new cases are diagnosed in India. About five lakh succumb to the disease annually. While breakthrough advances are being made in diagnosis and treatment, cancer is galloping ahead. What’s worse, cancer among children and young adults has taken on severe proportions. They comprise 15% of India’s cancer patients. No less than 50,000 children are detected with cancer every year. They are at the core of our cause.

The silver lining in the story is the immense support and care structure that backs up mainstream treatment. Raising awareness plays a large role. This is where NDTV and Fortis have stepped in to create a nationwide cancer awareness and fundraising campaign — Health4U Cancerthon.

The campaign culminated in an 8-hour LIVE fundraiser CANCERTHON rolled from Yash Raj Studios, Mumbai. It brought together the entire nation to spread awareness and donate generously to the cause. The campaign successfully raised close to 3 crores for cancer patients.

Packed with stories of cancer survivors, medics talking about breakthrough treatment and detection and NGOs elaborating on the support required by patients and caregivers, it was a first-of-a-kind live awareness campaign and fundraiser.

Sharing their personal stories and professional expertise during the eight-hour event, anchored by Vikram Chandra, were film and television personalities, well-known singers, eminent doctors and cancer survivors. Celebrities included Salman Khan, Shahid Kapoor, Kajol, Arjun Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Anu Malik, Pankaj Udhas, Mohit Chauhan, Kailash Kher, Yuvraj Singh, Minissha Lamba, Diana Hayden, Ali Fazal, Priya Dutricha Chadda, Neeraj Shridhar, RJ Sidhu, Ehsaan Noorani, Emraan Hashmi, Ram Naik, NDTV’s Co-Chairperson Prannoy Roy along with Fortis Executive Chairman Malvinder Singh and Executive Vice-Chairman Shivinder Singh.

Indian actor, producer and philanthropist Salman Khan said, “Sometimes children come to us in the last stage of cancer and you find them still so full of life. They are not burdened with despair.”  Talking about the strength with which these children fight the disease he says, “These children are the real heroes they manage to fight and kick cancer out of their bodies. ‘’

‘‘Cancer is not scary as everybody makes it out to be and it’s truly, truly an awareness that we need to spread,  that listen, it can be controlled, you know it can be made better and the faster you get to it, faster you are able to eradicate it the problem. It’s as a simple as that”, said Kajol.

Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh who interacted with cancer survivors in Panchkula, Haryana, as part of this campaign said, “As a cancer survivor, it was very inspiring to meet all these courageous people who are battling cancer. On my own journey of beating cancer, I learnt an important lesson – cancer is detectable and curable. 90% of cancers are curable if detected in stage one. To ensure that no one has to fight cancer alone, my NGO YouWeCan is helping create consciousness on cancer prevention, early detection and the fight against stigma. It is an initiative which I am proud of and involved in 24×7. With your support and love we all will make it happen.’’

Actor Shahid Kapoor on the occasion said, “Every woman must go regularly for breast cancer screenings and the men should support them and make them comfortable so that they feel comfortable and don’t hesitate for going for the tests.”

Speaking on the occasion Vikram Chandra, Group CEO, NDTV said, “Why do over ninety thousand children die annually from childhood cancers and how can this be stopped? I am very pleased that today’s Cancerthon, with generous contribution of their time by experts, has given us a better understanding of the research and awareness being done towards finding safer treatments and cures for this disease. In partnership with Fortis Healthcare, the Cancer Society and CanKids we will give hope to so many more children and end their suffering.”

Malvinder Mohan Singh, Executive Chairman Shivinder Mohan Singh, Executive Vice Chairman Fortis Healthcare in a joint statement, added “Clearly the incidence of cancers has increased over the last many years. India contributes to 7.5% of cancer cases globally and 8 % of global cancer deaths happen in India. Due to under- diagnosis and under- detection, the actual scale of the problem is at least twice or thrice the reported numbers With the current lifestyles that people are leading, it becomes all the more important for us to focus on doing what’s right from a prevention perspective so that we minimize the risk of cancer. Childhood cancers are immensely curable, if detected in time. Whilst we make the best of treatment available to them, raising funds for those who can’t afford the treatment has been one of the key objectives of this campaign.”

The funds raised through this initiative will be utilised by the campaign’s Knowledge and Implementation Partner, The Indian Cancer Society, towards pediatric cancer treatments.

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Simardeep Singh Arora, CIPLA, Arun Bharat Ram, Mohit Chauhan and HDFC generously donated for cancer patients.

  • Double dose of action in ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi 6’

Double dose of action in ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi 6’

MUMBAI: It seems to have become an unwritten rule of the game. Now-a-days broadcasters have started to realise that reality shows can run by getting celebrity hosts to garner more eyeballs.

A big celebrity host is a prerequisite to launch a reality show in India. Celebrity participants, though important, are not mandatory; but the bigger the host, the better.

From Salman Khan and Farah Khan in Big Boss to Shah Rukh Khan for a game show – India Poochega – Sabse Shaana Kaun in the yet-to-be launched general entertainment channel (GEC) ‘&TV’ under the Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (Zeel) stable. Likewise, there are many more names in the basket.

After having popular celebrity faces like Priyanka Chopra and Akshay Kumar as hosts for its adventure based reality show – Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi, last year the show got a new face on-board.

The director, who is known for reviving the action genre on the celluloid, Rohit Shetty who hosted the fifth edition of the series, will continue to host the sixth season as well.

According to Colors CEO Raj Nayak casting in this season is the best so far. “All faces are popular. Moreover, the number of stunts has increased and you will see a lot of variations. Last year, it was the best season ever and this time we hope it surpasses that.”

The show, which goes on air from 7 February every Saturday and Sunday at 9 pm, will see Ashish Choudhary, Hussain Kuwarjerwala, Harshad Arora, Iqbal Khan, Sana Khan. Sagrika Ghartge, Rashami Desai, Asha Negi, Ridhhi Dogra, Meiyang Chang, Rakesh Kumar, Siddharth Bharadwaj, Nathalia Kaur and Archana Vijaya battling it out.

The contestants will stay in a ‘Darr ka Ghar’ this time to keep the entertainment quotient up. Adding a twist to the take and urging the contestants to push their boundaries will be last year’s finalist Salman Yusuff Khan who will be seen as a challenger.

Endemol MD Deepak Dhar said, “Khatron … will be riveting for the viewers as it has been taxing for the contestants. We have doubled the dose of danger, action and entertainment this season while introducing new concepts and themes to make the show a truly engaging watch. Rohit Shetty’s contribution in making the show a complete blockbuster has been unparalleled and as the show prepares for launch, we are all set for the true action to begin.”

According to sources, the budget has also gone up by about 25 per cent as compared to the last season. While last season the production of the non-fiction show was pegged at Rs 50-55 crore, this season media planners estimate it to be around Rs 60-65 crore.

Media planners believe that the show will definitely continue to work wonders for the channel, thanks to the celebrity power status and power packed stunts that will keep viewers hooked onto the show.

Salman’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ gets hate mails

And apparently, the star as well as the director of the film, Kabir Khan, have received hate mails from many religious extremists stating that they will boycott the film because it propagates “Love Jihad”.

The director refuses to surrender and has decided not to make any changes to the film which traces the love story of a Muslim guy and a Hindu girl or its name.

MUMBAI: The Forbes 2014 India celebrity list is out. And this time, it has a new leader.

After enjoying the top rank in the list for three consecutive years, Shah Rukh Khan has been replaced by Salman Khan. The reason behind SRK going down from the coveted spot to number 3 position is lack of any film release (except a cameo) between 1 October 2013 to 30 September 2014.

Meanwhile, Salman topped the charts, both in terms of revenues and fame.

At number two place, it’s Amitabh Bachchan, who has moved up by three positions in 2014. Big B’s charisma was enhanced by his nearly 12 million Twitter following.

  • Nita Ambani launches ISL grassroots football programme

Nita Ambani launches ISL grassroots football programme

MUMBAI: When the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) was introduced, there was a lot of talk about emphasis being laid on the development of the sports at the grassroots level. Football Sports Development (FDSL) founder and chairperson Nita Ambani, launched the league’s grassroots football movement recently.

The programme aims to create a platform for the development of grassroots football activity and talent-scouting across the country. It aims to reach out to a million young footballers in the first few years and expose them to the best practices in global football.

“Sports is important to build character and channelise the abundant energy of our children in a positive direction. Now that we are approaching the business-end of the league, we are launching the soul of ISL – the grassroots programme,” Ambani said.

This long-term initiative will be a joint effort of  ISL, the eight ISL clubs, Reliance Foundation and three NGOs – Magic Bus in Mumbai, Delhi, Raigad and Bangalore; slum soccer in Nagpur, Thane and Navi Mumbai; and Yuwa in Jharkhand.

In the first phase, the programme will aim to reach out to 5,00,000 children through in-school and maidan initiatives, beginning early 2015. The outreach will focus on introduction of kids to football, training and talent-scouting through a series of selection modules across the country.

ISL will also distribute 1,00,000 footballs with a specific focus on towns and villages across the country.

Being Human founder and actor Salman Khan, who endorsed the programme said, “I am happy to be part of the programme and Ambani’s vision to develop India as a footballing nation. This programme will shape the next generation of Indian footballers.”

Top talent in the age group of 10 to 13 that emerges from these camps will undergo another selection process to be picked for Reliance Foundation’s YoungChamps scholarship. The full-time residential scholarship, provided over three-to-seven year period, will also cover their education.

  • Subhash Chandra knew I had a winning concept: Rajat Sharma

Subhash Chandra knew I had a winning concept: Rajat Sharma

In the 21 years of this show, nobody has been forced to reply, Rajat knows the art of extracting a reply through his sweet questioning. Another big quality of Rajat is that he uses his tongue sparingly in his show, but he uses his heart to the fullest. A clever mind works behind this,” is how Prime Minister Narendera Modi described the man who has been for 21 years making the icons of the country answerable.

Rajat Sharma’s journey with ‘Aap ki Adalat’ began with Zee TV in 1994 and from then there has been no stopping. The talk show has seen politicians, sportspersons, celebrities and others pour out their heart as well answer some of the trickiest questions.

Amidst the celebrations, indiantelevision.com’s Meghna Sharma in a freewheel chat with Sharma spoke about what keeps him ticking, his favourite interview and much more.

    Excerpts…

21 years is a long time, what do you have to say about the journey? What keeps you ticking?

It still feels that the journey has just begun; all my memories with the show are still very fresh. The type of guests we have hosted on ‘Aap Ki Adalat,’ their replies, the viewers’ response, the in-studio audiences, the ambience that makes me feel at home every time I step into the Adalat Studio, the affection showered upon me, probably the never-ending love of my viewers…all makes me feel really blessed and probably gives me the strength to keep going.

When did you come up with the idea of starting ‘Aap ki Adalat’? Any glitches faced while launching the show?

The idea came up in a casual conversation with Zee TV owner Subhash Chandra on a flight from Delhi to Mumbai, 21 years ago. Without much thinking I told Subhash Chandra how the interviews should be done for TV. I told him about putting politicians in the dock and making them accountable to public. After we landed I forgot about the conversation. Subhash Chandra, however, was quick to realise that I had come up with a winning concept.

Your most memorable interview so far and why?

Like I said, all of my interviews have been really special and still very fresh in my memory, however if you tell me to pick one, I would pick the one with the then PM candidate, Narendra Modi. The reason for my pick is not only did the show created a huge ripple in the broadcast media Industry, when almost India’s 85 per cent news audiences watched the show’s first telecast with competition reduced to negligible numbers but also because of spontaneity and ease with which Mr. Modi responded even to the trickiest questions…given the fact that he had a really bad throat after addressing six-odd election rallies during the hectic campaign spree. We weren’t expecting more than 15 minutes of shoot. We ended up shooting him for over two hours and the result was breathtaking.

Whom/what do you attribute this success to? How do you still maintain the charm of the show?

Talking of success, I am very sure that it wouldn’t have been the way it is now if the director of my show, who also is my wife, Ritu Dhawan wouldn’t have been around. She is the one who has been standing like a rock behind my success…taking care of everything, from my looks to the positioning of the show, she is everywhere.

I have always believed in doing my job right and just focus on that. We have been able to create the right mix of depth, detailing and research mixed with the right amount of humour, we have ensured to keep the show relevant to the changing preferences of the audiences over the last two decades, probably that’s what you are referring to as charm.

After 21 years, will we see any changes in the format?

Change is inevitable, however more than planning any such change we would rather keep ourselves adaptive to what our audiences would prefer.

From President to PM to celebs, everyone attended the celebrations. What do you have to say about the support?

One word, I am overwhelmed. Feeling deeply humbled. While just focusing on my work, I never expected the amount of affection and respect showered upon me by all including country’s topmost icons. I am more than grateful to all and most to my viewers who have backed me all through as their advocate while I tried to amplify their voice with who mattered.
