Sony’s Ek India HappyWala for IPL scores big on social media, wins hearts

MUMBAI: If sports channels are raising the expectations of viewers, the general entertainment channels cannot be left behind.

Leaving no stone unturned, Sony Pictures Network began a month earlier with its campaign EK India…Happywala (One Happy India), so that the excitement builds even before the ninth edition of Indian Premier League.

The campaign Ek India….Happywala (One Happy India) was launched on 1 March with the IPL anthem.

To the launch the Vivo IPL 2016 anthem video, Sony did a Vox Pop activity featuring kids who were asked to answer a few questions about India. The same set of questions was thrown to adults on social media.

The anthem was launched on social media that trended on twitter across India for five hours. The channel recorded 4,526 tweets, more than 42 million timeline deliveries, and had a reach of more than 5 million and recorded 3 million views anthem video. The anthem video received more than 100,000 likes and 26,131 people had shared it on Facebook.

In order to take the campaign forward towards creating a happier nation, Sony started a user-powered activity where they motivated users to spread happiness with #15days Happywala. The core task is to make a stranger smile every day, thus converting users into happiness ambassadors. The activity kicked-off with a lot of user participation resulting in getting the activity to trend across India for more than 4 hours. The channel achieved 3,672 tweets, more than 28 million timeline deliveries and more 4 million plus reach – and 805 entries for the same.

On 17 March, Sony launched the taxi promo, through which they emphasised on how the assurance of safety and well being can spread happiness among our citizens. The activity focused on driving conversations about spreading positivity.

With this activity, the campaign thought #Ek India Happywala once again got a lot of buzz resulting it to trend for over 5 hours across India. More than 10 million people watched that video on social media platforms.

The next in list was the Newsroom promo, with the launch of the news room video urging users to focus more on the country’s positives than the negatives, Sony Pictures Networks decided to reward users who would help support this cause. This activity turned out to be a huge hit amongst the audience as the broadcaster garnered more than 4000+ entries within a week. The Newsroom promo achieved more than 500,000 views on twitter.

The next initiative of the campaign was to spread happiness in the lives of underprivileged kids. Users have to tell the story of a child who aspires to be a cricketer but doesn’t have the means. Sony offered to help 11 children (scouted by the users) with professional cricket kits and so far, they have received 145 entries since the launch of the activity. With 1, 255 tweets, 13 million timeline deliveries and 2 million of reach, the initiative #HappyXI was trended for four hours across India.

To highlight the current mood of the country, the channel started Happiness meter activity. Happiness Meter is a listening activity that tracks the conversation happening on Twitter to gauge what is the current mood of the people in the country.

The next Old Age Home promo recorded 29 million views on social and 1504 likes on Facebook. On 1 April Best Cricket game was a prank where the audiences tricked into playing the best ever online cricket game & having the best cricket experience they can ever have. Later, they realized that it’s the cricket insect that played them.

The idea is to highlight that the best ever cricket experience can only be lived with vivo IPL. 2,045 tweets, 16 million timelines deliveries and 3 million reach, the prank activity was trending for five hours across India.

  • Pepsi IPL 2015 goes with ‘Unity in Diversity’ theme

Pepsi IPL 2015 goes with ‘Unity in Diversity’ theme

MUMBAI: Sony Max and Six, the official broadcasters of the Pepsi Indian Premier League (IPL), have given viewers a reason to cheer by launching the new campaign for this edition of IPL: ‘Ye Hai India Ka Tyohaar.’

As the name suggests, the campaign aims to connect hearts and lives by creating a national euphoria and strengthening emotional affinity towards the sport.

‘India Ka Tyohaar’ invites people to break their differences and join in the revelry, which is aptly communicated through a heart shaped mnemonic that excludes spirit of togetherness.

The campaign kicked off with a series of three prequels set in distinct situations of people’s life, ending with the common message of ‘India Ka Tyohaar.’ Sony Max and Six have roped in the musical duo Salim-Sulaiman to compose the anthem “Dooriyan chodkar… dil se dil jodkar.”

Sony Max EVP and business head Neeraj Vyas said, “Pepsi IPL reaches out to people across age groups, gender and languages. This year’s initiative is a unique thought that stems from the insight of how Pepsi IPL over the years has grown to be a huge festival which people celebrate together. It is a perfect blend of cricket, entertainment and festivity packaged in one. The campaign will be promoted in each and every platforms. And with time we will launch an interactive campaign for the digital medium.”

IPL starts right after ICC cricket World Cup and when queried about it, Vyas told Indiantelevision.com, “We have learnt from our experiences before and that’s why we have a different campaign this time. IPL has its charisma and the campaign will back it. The 2015 edition is going to be bigger and better and in all aspects and I am sure about it.”

The multilingual concept will be witnessed during IPL too as the tournament will be showcased in five different languages viz English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Telegu. While Sony Aath will feature the Bengali edition, MSM may launch two new channels for Tamil and Telegu. But the ad inventory will remain the same and regional players won’t get the opportunity to participate for a particular region.

DDB Mudra CCO Sonal Dabral said, “If cricket is a religion in India, Pepsi IPL is the only true festival. Unlike any other sporting event in the world, it’s a microcosm of the passion and madness that envelops our country whenever cricket is played, uniting hearts and minds in its wake. And unlike any other festival in India, this is one festival that every Indian celebrates. It got the colors of Holi the festivity of Diwali the brotherhood of Eid and joy of Christmas. What else can you call it but one amazing India ka tyohaar? Its been a privilege and an honor to create this big idea for Pepsi IPL.”

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com Dabral said that the name behind the campaign came because of all the religious diversities we are witnessing now a days, “The video shows Muslim man picking a Sikh kid on his shoulder and that’s the beauty of IPL and that’s why it’s ‘India ka Tyohaar,’” he concluded.

  • “We are playing the role of a connector between talent and viewer”: Samir Bangara

“We are playing the role of a connector between talent and viewer”: Samir Bangara

Samir Bangara started his career in venture capital with IL&FS Venture Corporation and moved on to becoming an investment banker. Focusing on the tech space with Ernst & Young, he drove several US sell side mandates in the IT services BPO and wireless sector as a VP in the M&A team. Post that he held stints at Indiagames and The Walt Disney Company India (Disney UTV) as the chief operating officer and Managing Director-digital respectively.

Thereafter he decided to don the hat of an entrepreneur by collaborating with well known industry faces like Shekhar Kapur and music maestro A R Rahman, and co-founded Qyuki Digital Media. In 2012, it was reported that Cisco Systems pumped in Rs 27 crore into the social media platform thereby becoming a strategic investor. In a freewheeling chat, the man who has a keen knowledge about the digital ecosystem talks to Indiantelevision.com’s  Herman Gomes about the multi channel network and more.

Excerpts: How did the three of you come together and what is the stake-holding pattern in the company?

Cisco was an investor in my previous company. They helped me re-connect with Shekhar Kapur and through him I met A R Rahman. We started talking about my plans and saw a common interest and decided to do this together. It took close to four to six months to launch after that. I worked in digital media and content for seven years prior to this selling games and video content. Those learning’s helped shape what I am doing today at Qyuki. The three of us together hold a majority stake with Cisco as an investor.

What is the investment pattern by the three of you in Qyuki?

We are building a large scale media business and that requires significant investments. We have already spent a few million dollars and in the near future I see us investing close to $20-30 million additionally.

What are the evolving opportunities you see in the digital ecosystem?

The opportunities are very clear when you analyse the macro fundamentals. From 200 million internet users, we are set to grow to 450 million users over the next 12-15 months. The confluence of video and music is very compelling and now with better access to 4G, 3G and broadband I think the macro fundamentals are very strong in terms of consumption. Companies like us are looking at building the future digital broadcast networks.
On platforms like YouTube it can be hard to find good content because it is very vast and discovery is a problem. We are therefore looking at organizing this plethora of content for viewers by packaging content better and paralelly adding value to talent or the creators by empowering them with technology, production resources and distribution. Thus we are playing the critical role of a connector between the talent and the viewer without thrusting our brand before that of the creators. We are a creator brand first and then a consumer brand and not vice versa.

How do you plan to pursue the role of a connector?

The old philosophy used by traditional media platforms said please come to my destination. We are using our production capability, technology and distribution strength to connect the talent and the consumer and in doing so across thousands of creators and channels we are creating a digital broadcast network of the future. With regard to the business model let’s appreciate that every time you see a YouTube video I am sure you are waiting to click the skip button to avoid the ad. That space of putting an ad before the content is going to become passé. I think the real growth will come from branded content or content marketing where ads actually give way to real content to communicate the brands message. This is a multi billion dollar opportunity where brands will look towards creating talent driven content that will leverage the fan base of creators and thus deliver better engagement and reach. Research clearly shows that such ‘influencer’ based marketing is more effective than doing a plan vanilla ad.

How do you see brands employing such talent?

Brands want to employ talent to tell a story using digital influencers rather than produce just an ad. This also comes at a cheaper cost and is a win-win situation for all. So the talent benefits, we benefit as a network and the brand receives engagement and saves on cost.

Which are the genres that Qyuki is focusing on?

While music is our main focus it’s not the only thing we do. One example is a very popular show with Pooja Bedi and her daughter Aalia called Eff N Bedi. Our network consists of established artists like AR Rahman, Ranjit Barot, Salim-Sulaiman, Shweta Subram and Youtubers like Shraddha Sharma, Gaurav Dagaonkar, Siddharth Slathia and lifestyle and entertainment channels like Miss Malini, The Boss Dialogues etc. The Boss Dialogues has already moved from just being on digital to a prime time TV show on NDTV Prime and will soon have a sponsor on board.

Who does the digital IP rest with?

There are two formats. When we produce the content we share the IP with the creator. But when the creator creates the content and we help them distribute, they retain the IP.

What are the facilities offered by Qyuki?

We have five studio facilities. Three of these are based in Mumbai and are solely designed for digital. We have in-house teams that shoot and edit content. Besides production facilities, we offer technology to distribute content online. Our network can actually help drive traffic online. The technology therefore helps in discovering and distributing content, the network helps in driving traffic and in some cases we also aid in production. We also bring in brands who are looking at communicating with audiences via digital influencers.

While audiences who come to view content online are seen as ‘snackers’ and TV viewing is seen as appointment bound, do you see this as a challenge?

Not at all! It  may be a challenge for TV producers who have to create content online or Ad film makers  who find it challenging to create content for digital and adapt to a digital scale of production vs. the significantly larger budgets they have in traditional mediums.  It’s important to remember that in digital the cost of production and quality of content are not necessarily co-related. Some of the largest content creators on Youtube have more views than large companies like Disney and Coca Cola and yet their production budgets are near zero per episode. It is hard for large scale media companies to come up with such guerilla ideas for content and frankly no one person or team can predict what can work. It needs to be something that naturally blossoms from the ecosystem. We are thus enabling and empowering the long tail of content creation to allow precisely this.

Which are these brands you have been working with?

The usual suspects! We have worked with OLX and Volkswagen and are currently working with some e-commerce labels and a major liquor brand. We are working across the spectrum in categories like automobiles, FMCG, financial services companies etc.

What is the revenue model followed by the network?

Just like a broadcast network we will have different revenue models. These models are constantly evolving and focused towards the future. One, there will be brand sponsored shows like Roadies, which was done for Hero Honda. Two, we are looking at syndicated content. For example, the way it is done via Netflix and Amazon through licensing of shows. Three, through ad funded programming. And finally the pay per download/pay per view model common to mobile operators. One has to look at all models including ad funded on YouTube.

  • Empowering women with internet can change India’s future, believes Google

Empowering women with internet can change India’s future, believes Google

MUMBAI: Google India today announced the launch of a new social campaign called #ReachForTheSky, in association with Farhan Akhtar’s MARD initiative to increase internet literacy among women in India.

The joint campaign will also look to build support from existing Internet users and encourage more women to learn and use the internet to excel in their lives.

Speaking about the campaign and the importance of getting women online, Google India VP and managing director Rajan Anandan said, “There are 616 million women in India and close to half are below the age of 25. Empowering the young women population with information and internet could transform India’s future.”

In November 2013, Google India had launched its first digital literacy initiative campaign in India called ‘Helping Women Get Online’ (HWGO) in collaboration with Intel, HUL and Axis Bank.

Along with boosting the overall internet adoption, the initiative aims to bridge the huge gender disparity prevalent India. “The first phase has been very successful. For the first time last year, the number of women using the internet has grown 35 per cent as against 31 per cent by men,” Anandan added.

Anandan also revealed that this initiative is not a part of the company’s CSR and said, “Google’s mission is to get more people online and as the number of women using Internet increases, it would be a good thing for the country as well as the company.”

Talking about the association and the launch of the campaign, Farhan Akhtar, said, “MARD is a progressive movement for a more gender equal world. There is lack of encouragement for women to use internet or technology and we need to come together to address this issue. Technology is not just the domain of men. I am excited to join this initiative, to gather support and encourage men to support and help young girls and women to learn and use the internet to improve lives.”

Sharing more details about the campaign, Google India marketing head Sandeep Menon said, “Our mission is to help bring 50 million women online in India. In the last nine months we have undertaken a number of initiatives reaching over one million women across five states in India, covering 30 cities and 55 small towns.”

The company has also been working closely with educational institutions for the campaign to reach the remotest parts of the country by imparting basic internet and computer training to students and teachers. The company has also have introduced HWGO Internet Cart, a mobile way of reaching out to women in villages to give them the internet experience and are planning to roll it across more states of the country.

Talking about association with Akhtar, Menon reckoned, “Since the launch of HWGO, we have worked with a number of partners, HUL, Samsung, Aircel. One of the partners was MARD, and we soon realised our aims were very well aligned. It was a natural fit.”

Menon also added that they would also launch two media campaigns. “Farhan will help us enroll multiple stars. There will be a number of familiar faces joining the cause as that is a powerful medium. Also, for people looking for facts and statistics, we will have a campaign that will provide statistical data to shake up people and inspire them to join the campaign.”

To rope in more existing internet users to join the campaign to help get more women online, the company will be only opting for digital marketing.

“We will be taking the digital route completely for this, not going to take the campaign on mainline media at this point of time. We will be propagating the campaign on different mediums and sites including Youtube, economictimes.com. The campaign will be launched across social media,” revealed Menon.

MARD also plans for global outreach and will continue to address gender equality issues across the world and in India, MARD Canvas Talent CEO and Artist Innovations & Repertoire director Anurag Rao said, “MARD will work with content makers around the world in a pledge to engage hearts and minds through art and music, for a more gender equal world #ReachForTheSky is just the start.”

The campaign was also launched with a musical work ‘Chulein Aasmaan’, composed by Salim-Sulaiman and performed by Akhtar and Shraddha Pandit. Written by the two of them, the song, that was released on Youtube today, highlights the importance of equal opportunity, possibilities and the impact it can have on women.
