    MUMBAI: Sahara TV is firming up its plans to leverage its mega serials starring Bollywood stars during the forthcoming summer vacations. Also, the free-to-air Sahara channel will showcase the serials before the 14 July 2003 deadline when conditional access system will become a reality in the metros.

    Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor’s TV debut Karisma The Miracle of Destiny will launch on 28 April on Sahara TV. The serial will be aired Mondays to Thursdays at prime time. According to Sahara Media and Entertainment head Sumit Roy, the serial will be of a finite duration and will not exceed 262 episodes.

    The second attraction of Sahara TV will be the Sridevi starrer Hamari Bahu Malini Iyer that will go on air by end May or first week of June.

    This serial too, will be aired Mondays to Thursdays at prime time, in conjunction with Karisma The Miracle of Destiny and will be telecast for a finite 208 episodes.

    The end of the year will see the debut of Amitabh Bachchan in the capacity of an actor in another mega serial. Roy refused to divulge details about the Bachchan starrer.

    “We will be in the top bracket of entertainment channels within a year,” promises Roy.

    Sahara TV readies comprehensive assembly poll coverage

    With assembly elections to the some key states round the corner, Hindi general entertainment channel Sahara TV plans to provide comprehensive election coverage to its viewers. Branded as Chunav Sangram the programme will be a run-up to the elections followed by 24-hour live telecast on 24 February, 2002. 

    Elections are being held in the key states of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab as well as the new state of Uttaranchal (which was carved out of UP) and the northeastern state of Manipur. The time schedule of Chunav Sangram is as follows:

    4 February to 23 February, 2002  7 pm to 8 pm. 24 February, 2002 onwards  live non-stop coverage from 8 am on. 

    Starting 4 February, Sahara TV will air an hour-long election analysis programme anchored by Vinod Dua and eminent psephologist Ashok Lahiri. To make a strong impact with these discussions, Sahara TV has roped in names like Ashwini Minna, Mahesh Bhatt, Tarun Tejpal, JS Malhotra, Vivek Bharati, Shankarsan Thakur and Purshottam Agarwal who will form an exclusive panel of analysts. Besides these, the programme will also have senior politicians joining the studio discussions from time to time.

    The election special programme will take off with a benchmark projection poll indicating the likely positions of the parties in the forthcoming elections followed by a series of election related daily opinion polls.

    The hour-long Chunav Sangram will also include an interesting segment offering on-the-spot election related investigative stories by Nalini Singh highlighting issues like corruption, misuse of official machinery, use of guns, nepotism etc

    Sahara TV has earmarked Rs 2 billion for its expansion plans to set up a NFDC style film and television academy and a media club for media personalities. The funds for this venture will be raised mostly through internal accruals and the rest by tapping the balance.

    The academy will have all the modern equipment like four air-conditioned studio floors (two for films and two for video), 15 digital video cameras, three audio studios, telecine equipment, reverse telecine, 33 edit suites, DVD authoring, animation and a full-blown film processing laboratory. The annual capacity of the project will be 20 full-length feature films and 10,000 episodes of half-hour video.

    Sahara will also be launching its news and current affair channel soon. Besides this, the company also plans to launch a new magazine.

    Sahara TV aims to bang the Hindi entertainment market

    One more channel joins the entertainment bandwagon. Sahara TV was launched yesterday amidst much fanfare. And this one’s claiming freshness in its content too.

    The channel officials said that they have pre-tested each of their programmes before commissioning them. The channel which has hi-tech studio facilities at Noida as well as Mumbai, says that it will avoid reruns as far as possible as it has 11 hours of daily fresh content. Sahara is placing a lot of emphasis on the look as well as quality of the channel. Plus many reputed TV producers & directors have been commissioned to make programmes for Sahara TV. According to the officials, the channel has also tried to create new genres of programming in order to provide freshness to the channel.

    When asked about the distribution network of the channel, a senior official said that “Sahara TV has the largest distribution team in the television industry. We have worked out a comprehensive support plan for cable distributors, which include ready information on equipment upgradation, easy finance schemes and a helpline. Besides Sahara India Pariwar is a household name in the Hindi belt. Also our 6 lac committed workers as a part of the pariwar will help promote the channel all over the country. Thus we expect a cable penetration of 65% of the total 30-million C&S homes to start with.” The channel is also looking at forming their own DTO bouquet and forging alliances with other channels. But first it will concentrate on its main entertainment channel.

    The channel is also closely monitoring Internet as a powerful communication medium of the future.
