SabTV stands unaffected; continues to garner a steady viewership

MUMBAI: Some make call it stagnant and others may call it stable. But, the point in note here, is that Sab TV over the last four years has managed to sustain its channel share. A channel that began as a mass entertainment channel quickly transformed itself into a humour and current affairs outfit. Interestingly, four years down the line, this niche channel still seems to have its hold and its due share of steady and loyal viewership.

It is important here, to bear in mind that despite the entry of Sahara Manoranjan at the same time, recently rechristened as Sahara One and Star Utsav, Star’s heartland channel earlier this year, whose launch was supposedly aimed at flanking the other two (Sab & Sahara), Sab TV seems to be standing unaffected.

Commanding a current channel share of three per cent, when juxtaposed with all the other Hindi entertainment channels in the CS 4+ Hindi speaking markets according to TAM data, this small scale low budget channel has managed to carve a niche as well as sustain itself as a profitable unit.

Looking at the recent past, Utsav which started off with a channel share of 2 per cent among the three ( Sab, Sahara, Utsav) has managed to spruce itself to a 20 – 30 per cent channel share in the last five to six months. So, where has Utsav got its viewership from?

One thing is definite. It certainly hasn’t managed to eat into Sab’s pie, Sahara well maybe. Looking at channel share figures over the last couple of months, Sahara’s share has shown a consistent dip. This player although accounts for the largest channel share among the three, has not managed to sustain its figures. From a whopping 71 per cent, Sahara has oscillated to a 45-55 per cent share.

Sab on the other hand, may not have grown but has managed to sustain its share ranging from 23 – 29 per cent.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Sab TV president – sales and marketing Kanta Advani says, ” The fact that we have maintained our share is commendable in today’s age. One thing is established, that it is only content which drives a channel. So, the key has been differentiation.”

Advani also pointed out that with the burst of channels and viewership getting further fragmented maintaining the innings itself is an uphill task.

Speaking to media planners on Sab TV and their take on how it is perceived by advertisers, most said that Sab was a good cost efficient medium. Also, the channel has managed to weave in innovations for every brand ensuring value for money.

Says Madison communications Sudipto Roy, ” If you look at inventory sales, the highest clutter outside of the movies channels is on Sab TV. If you look at general entertainment channels, Sab TV has been quite high in terms of inventory sales. This can be attributed to Sab’s loyal set of audience.”

Another factor pointed out by Mindshare’s investment director Laxshmi Narasimhan, ” Sab TV also tries very hard to add value in terms of innovative packaging and Sab does it consistently and cost-effectively.”

Narasimhan also points out that if there is any channel that is slightly male skewed, it is SabTV. Going on to further state that the biggest gap in the Indian television industry today is that there is no option for the Indian male. Hence a lot of male viewers get on to Sab by default rather than a Sony or a Star Plus.

One other aspect that works in favour of Sab TV is its differentiated content as well as its very clearly positioning of it being comedy and current affairs and all programmes are in tandem with their positioning statement. Sab also manages to draw younger audiences who fall in the CS 4 – 14 SEC A, as younger audiences show a skew towards comedy.

Interestingly, Utsav does not seem to have entered into any media planners bouquet.

All in all, as is evident, Sab TV has not gained but has managed to maintain its channel shares, where as Sahara seems to be losing ground. Although, with the coming of Sahara One, one has to wait and watch as to whether the channel manages to make the jump among mainline general entertainment channels.

  • Sahara Manoranjan in makeover mode, to be rechristened

Sahara Manoranjan in makeover mode, to be rechristened

NEW DELHI: After Aaj Tak and Zee TV, it’s the turn of Sahara Manoranjan to undergo a makeover, including a name change. A decision on the name change of the news channels has not yet been taken however.

Soon, Sahara Manoranjan, the Hindi general entertainment channel from the Sahara group, would carry the Sahara One brand name with a new focus on the channels distribution. A distribution game plan had taken Sahara Samay UP (the Uttar Pradesh-specific news channel) ahead of Aaj Tak for approximately the past five weeks.

This is being done as part of an over all corporate restructuring that was effected recently whereby all the functioning of Saharas media and entertainment businesses have been put under the management of a 50:50 joint venture company in which Percept Finserve is also a partner with Sahara. Percept is a company that has been active in the field of event and celebrity management and manages people like Indian cricket team captain Saurav Ganguly.

The content of Sahara Manoranjan too, would undergo a change. The revamp is likely to include, according to sources in Sahara, they would be phasing out a high-profile serial Sahib, Bibi aur Ghulam. Karishma- Miracles of Destiny is also set to go off the air soon.

Launched not so long back, Raveena Tandon starrer Sahib, Bibi… was touted as the next mega show on Sahara, after Bollywood siren Sridevi television debutMalini Iyer.

The new management of all the media and entertainment properties of Sahara group, which lays claim to being India’s largest business house with an asset base of $ 10.98 billion, will also look at the distribution aspect of the TV channels within its fold as it is being increasingly felt that lack of aggressiveness in that area has cost some of the properties to lag behind.

Though the news channels have not been brought under the joint venture company for the present, Sahara sources said that if a decision on carrying the Sahara One brand name is made for the news channels too, then the functioning of those channels too would be brought under the new corporate entity, headed by Percept IMC MD Shailendra Singh.

Meanwhile, the new JV has plans to organise a 10-day Bollywood film festival in the UK and the US from 31 August as a prelude to spreading the network globally.

Zee TV UK bags Sahara Manoranjan’s Sridevi sitcom

MUMBAI: Although the shows is yet to dazzle on the home ground, looks like its has created some curiosity overseas. Zee UK has bagged rights for the Sridevi sitcom Malini Iyer from Sahara Manoranjan.

Subhash Chandra promoted entertainment channel’s UK arm will debut the series on Sunday 5 September at 8:30 pm.

According to media reports, the channel will be scrapping its Sunday night movie band, to make way for the sitcom starring former Bollywood star Sridevi.

On the home ground, the show, produced by Bollywood producer Boney Kapoor, launched on Sahara Manoranjan on19 January 2004 at 9 pm. It was touted as a comedy with an emotional undercurrent complete with the Sahara brand of opulence. The biweekly marked the television debut of Superstar Sridevi, who was back in the limelight after a six-year hiatus.

The show threw up the best ratings enjoyed in the first week of telecast for the channel. But despite a good start, the show failed to sustain the viewers interest. Albeit after that the rumours did round that channel was making some serious change in the protagonist’s character’s graph.

When contacted, both the Sahara and the Zee officials refused to comment. But apparently, it is common known fact that Sahara sells the telecast rights of its shows and events to the channels abroad on hourly fee basis as it does not have an international feed as yet.

With debut of Malini Iyer, Zee TV UK’s Sunday night’s will sport a new schedule that includes news bulletin Zee News at 7 pm, Indias Best- Cinestars Ki Khoj at 7:30 pm, Malini Iyer at 8:30 pm, Clay Oven Antakshari at 9:30 pm, a new family drama Pancham Omnibus at 10:15 pm and Zee News at 11:30 pm.

Kshitij’s father Vimal Singhania, although, doesnt approve of his lifestyle, but the film buff Kshitij couldnt care less. Both friends have a calllous attitude towards love.

The third angle to this story is portrayed by Gayatri (played by Shradha Nigam), a small town girl. Gayatri is smart, intelligent, creative and yet naive and untouched by the complexities of urban life.
