MUMBAI: Turner in the US has announced that it will boost its coverage of the Screen Actors Guild (Sag) awards in the US.

For the first time since TNT began live telecasts of the ceremony in 1998, the drama network will be joined by sister network TBS for a live simulcast presentation for next years awards show. In India the Sag Awards air on Zee Cafe.

Every year the event honours performances in five film categories and eight television categories, including the distinctive ensemble awards, which commend the collaborative performance by a cast of a motion picture and by the ensembles of both comedy and drama television series.

The 12th edition of the Sag Awards takes place on 29 January 2006. The Sag Awards are watched closely by the industry as it is considered a precursor of possible Oscar and Emmy recognition. This past February, all four actors honoured with Actor statuettes for their individual lead and supporting performances in films went on to receive Oscars.

  • ‘Desperate Housewives’, Garner triumph at Sag Awards

‘Desperate Housewives’, Garner triumph at Sag Awards

MUMBAI: ABC’s sitcom Desperate Housewives, which turned around the fortunes of the network, has won big at the Screen Actors Guild (Sag) awards held on Saturday night.

It won for best ensemble in a comedy series as well as for its lead Teri Hatcher. In India, the event aired on Zee English on 6 February.

Meanwhile Jennifer Garner who stars in the action packed Alias, also picked up an award in the drama category. When Garner was asked how she stayed grounded amid the madness of celebrity, she said, “If you’re normal, you’re normal. If you have a little bit of crazy in you, this (all the press attention) can exacerbate it. If you’re normal, with a little crazy, like me, hopefully you lean toward the okay side.”

Garner also suggested that there should be stricter laws legislated against celebrity photographers. “I think we need to work on some laws to handle the growing problem with the papparazzi in this country. Winning the Sag Award reminded me that I am not just an action chick. When I trained as an actor, I learned to speak lines and engage in scenes. When we shoot Alias what we’re really doing is reading scenes by JJ Abrams and being directed by people like Ken Olin and our wonderful stable of directors.”

Tony Shalhoub who won for playing the title role in Monk took time out to thank the guest stars who appeared in select episodes. He noted that it was not easy for someone to come in and straight away connect with the story as well as have a good rapport with the director, cast and crew who work daily with each other.

The Oscars are the next stop on 27 February. If the Sag vote is any indication then it is going to be a close call to choose between The Aviator, Million Dollar Baby and Sideways. The last name took everybody by surprise by winning the award for best ensemble in a motion picture at the Sag Awards.

Last month the Producers Guild had chosen The Aviator as the best film of 2004. Complicating affairs is Clint Eastwood’s win at the Directors Guild of America awards. Besides directing Eastwood also stars in Million Dollar Baby. He also composed the music for the film.

  • SAG Awards: ‘Desperate Housewives’ up against ‘Sex And the City’

MUMBAI: The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) in the US has announced the nominees in television and film for its 11th annual awards. The event will take place on 5 February at the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.

In the US it will be aired on TNT while in India it will telecast on Zee English.

What is unique about this is that unlike other awards shows like the Oscars, the Screen Actors Guild Awards are selected purely by actors’ peers. Two nominated panels — one for television and one for film — comprised of 2100 Sad members each from across the US.

The comedy category honouring an ensemble pits ABC’s Desperate Housewives against HBO’s Sex And The City, Fox’s Arrested Development, NBC’s Will & Grace and CBS’ Everybody Loves Raymond. This is considered the most important category as the entire cast’s efforts at working together is looked at. The nominees in the drama category include NBC’s The West Wing and HBO’s The Soprano’s and Six Feet Under.

HBO was also nominated in the film category. Catalina Sandino Moreno who played a Columbian who tries her hand at drug trafficking in Maria Full Of Grace was nominated for the lead actress in a motion picture. She is competing with Hilary Swank in Clint Eastwood’s feminist themed Million Dollar Baby. It is surprising to note that one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year Closer was shut out

  • Gandolfini row puts Sopranos’ 5th season in jeopardy

NEW YORK: Telly buffs watching the trials and tribulations of The Sorpano mob family may have to look elsewhere for satisfaction soon.
James Gandolfini, who won a Screen Actors Guild Award this morning for playing mob boss Tony Soprano on The Sopranos has filed a lawsuit against HBO seeking a release from his contract.
In India, the show airs on Zee English every Tuesday at 10:30 pm. Gandolfini’s grouse against the HBO network is related to salary. He believes that his salary is not quite on par with what his fellow actors receive. A Reuters report however indicates that Gandolfini is however hopeful of doing an encore if a favourable deal can be struck.
In his California suit, he accused HBO of violating a clause in his contract by not notifying him of a $20 million deal struck with David Chase, the brain behind the show.
Last year, The Sopranos broke records for a cable show by drawing in an audience of 13.4 million for its premiere.
After the first season, the star got around $400,000 an episode. In general terms this is not bad but it falls short of the $1 million the cast of the sitcom Friends receive. Shooting for the next season of The Sopranos was supposed to commence from next month. HBO has accused the star of indulging in arm twisting in a bid to extract more money.
Readers are no doubt aware that India is one of just two countries where HBO derives revenues from ads. In other places it relies solely on the subscription route. So it is difficult to arrive at a figure as to how much The Sopranos is worth.
Gandolfini’s fellow partners in crime on the show including Michael Imperioli and Tony Sirico recently renegotiated their contracts in recent months.
The Sopranos was the start of a successful run for HBO. In recent times the channel also had success with the black comedy Six Feet Under..
At this mornings SAG awards which aired on Zee English at 8:30 am Gandolfini was gracious in his acceptance speech. He thanked HBO for all the support received over the years. He encouraged struggling actors to keep working and auditioning. After all he reasoned it just takes one break to make it big. He however made an indirect reference to the suit by delivering this parting shot, “Enjoy what you can now, because things get pretty weird once it works.”
Telly buffs can catch a repeat of the SAG Awards this evening at 8:30 pm on the channel.
