MIB minister Smriti Irani orders review of DD prime time auction process

NEW DELHI: Doordarshan has put on hold the prime time slots auctioned to Ektaa Kapoor-managed Balaji Telefilms and Saaibaba Telefilms following instructions from the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB).

Doordarshan sources told Indiantelevision.com that the action was taken after a directive from the office of the MIB secretary in mid-August, just before two of the slotted programmes were slated to go on air on DD National.

The sources, who did not want to be identified, said the new MIB minister Smriti Irani had decided to review the whole process and take a fresh look at the concept of auctioning slots for prime time in Doordarshan.

Prime time auctions were held as part of the pubcaster’s efforts to infuse some breath of fresh air in the programming lineup of its main channel and also earn additional revenue in the process.

Balaji Telefilms bagged four slots and Saaibaba Telefilms pocketed two slots as a result of Doordarshan’s prime time slot auction, although financial details are not known.

Bag Films and Media of Delhi, which had also been shortlisted, had failed to bag any slot as its bids were lower than those by the other two bidders.

NEW DELHI: Just over six months since Doordarshan declared the results of the prime time auctions for DD National in December, the first of these programmes is finally all set to go on air. Commencing on 24 June, the unique music reality show ‘Suron ka Eklavya’ will be telecast every Saturday and Sunday from 8 pm to 9 pm.

The show has been produced by the multifaceted media company Saaibaba Telefilms which had won slots, as did Balaji Telefilms.

While Balaji won four slots, Saai Baba Telefilms bagged two. Saai won the bids for 7.30 pm to 8 pm from Monday to Friday, and 8 pm to 9 pm on Saturday and Sunday. As the RFP (request for proposal) document had made it clear that no party could bid for more than three slots in a week, DD sources told indiantelevision.com that Balaji had to surrender one of the slots it won in the bid.

‘Suron ka Eklavya’ will mark a tribute to the three pillars of playback singing – the legendary — Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, and Lata Mangeshkar with gharanas named after them.

The concept of the show is to present the gems of Bollywood music from the golden period of Hindi music with fresh voices retaining the signature style of the legends. The weekly show will feature the best of the industry and will engage the audience with spell bound music, anecdotes, interaction with judges and much more.

The show has a mixed bag of young talent, veterans from the fraternity, and stunning sets making it visually appealing. The contestants will be groomed and nurtured for their future music careers by celebrity mentors.

While there are many music reality shows, Suron ka Ekalavya is expected to stand out with its innovative and unique format, details of which will be revealed soon. Link for the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWZ8lnQZbJg

In the auctions held and for which results were announced in the second week of December last, no bids were received for three slots: 10 pm to 10.30 pm and 10.30 to 11 pm from Monday to Thursday and the 7pm to 8 pm slot on Sunday.

After two failures at auctions in 2016, Doordarshan had after a Prasar Bharati Board meeting in October last announced a series of concessions once the programmers come on board, including lowering base price for a 30-minute slot to Rs. 150,000.

Earlier this slot had been fixed at Rs 250.000 when the auction was first announced in June last year and was further decreased to Rs 200,000 when the new date was set for a second auction in early September 2016.

Producers/production houses that have produced at least 200 hours of general entertainment programming, including feature film productions in any Indian language in the last three years, and have a turnover of minimum Rs 30 million per annum in the field of TV and film production in the last three financial years are eligible to apply.

Applicants for weekend slots in the genres of reality, game and quiz were required to have produced 100 hours of such content in the last three years. However, DD sources said that certain changes had been made for successful bidders to promote their programmes.

Successful bidders will now also be allowed to approach and obtain advertisements from public service undertaking for their programmes on Doordarshan, which was not permitted earlier. Doordarshan has also laid down a compulsory number of promotional commercials, which will be free, on various channels of Doordarshan network.

In addition, successful bidders will be allowed to ‘bank’ their free commercial time. That is, in case a successful bidder has not exhausted the number of promotional commercials (totalling 240 seconds) permitted before the telecast of a particular programme, the balance can be used as and when the programme picks up in popularity.

The exit option has also been relaxed: in case a producer decides to opt out of the scheme, he will need to give only 45 days notice instead of three months. The lock-in period for this has also been reduced from one year to six months.

Saaibaba, which is popular for shows such as SaReGaMa, Antakshari, and Star Voice of India, will produce music-focused reality and fiction shows for Doordarshan. DD sources had told indiantelevision.com that the only eligibility criterion that has been relaxed is that the basic price for auction has come down to Rs 1,50,000 (Rs 1.5 lakh) for a 30-minute slot. It was Rs 250.000 when the auction was announced in June this year, and was decreased to Rs 200,000 when the new date was set in early September 2016.

However, most of the other eligibility norms remain the same as earlier in the New Content Acquisition Scheme that has been approved by Prasar Bharati Board.

Saaibaba Telefilms launches talent management company

MUMBAI: The Gajendra Singh helmed Saaibaba Telefilms has launched a new talent management vertical called Artist4Forty, which aims to provide a platform to budding musical talent by imparting training and mentorship.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Saaibaba Telefilms chairman and managing director Gajendra Singh said, “There is a talent pool beyond film musicians, who create their own music, versions and compositions. I have been in the industry for twenty years now. I know this country very well in terms of music and the idea behind creating this was to bring in new talent. Originality and purity are the key words that define Artist4Forty.”

The idea behind launching Artist4Forty was to provide a grooming platform for budding talent. Saaibaba Telefilms has been known for giving new talent to the music industry for years now. Through the Artist4Forty platform, artists can now release their unheard original compositions.

The company has implemented a robust training structure that will not only improve artists’ vocal skills but also elevate them with a specially designed personality development program, while building their career path.

Artist4Forty has adopted various artists including Rituraj Mohanty, Mohit Gaur, Mansheel Gujral, Pardeep Singh Sran, Dipti Sharma, Suraj Biswas and Mohan Rathore to mentor and train them into becoming the next generation stars of the Indian music industry.

Elaborating the purpose and working of Artist4Forty, Singh said, “We are looking for artists, who can come up with their own music and composition. The company is relentlessly engaged in identifying and grooming raw talent from across India. Our team is travelling in all the cities and towns, auditioning and shortlisting talent. We are trying to give very different music that can connect with people and which could define India.”

Additionally, Saaibaba Telefilms is also looking at venturing into film production sometime next year. Talking about the same, Singh said, “Saaibaba Telefilms has always been a content driven company and we don’t want to end up doing anything ineffective. We have shortlisted a couple of things for next year. It’s too early to say anything but in early 2016, we will have one of our films going on floors.”

The company has produced many music reality shows including Music Ka Maha Muqqabla, which first aired on 19 December, 2009 on Star Plus. It aimed to bring a new format to music reality shows in India, which is based on teams rather than individuals and Singh is keen to bring back the format on Indian television albeit on a bigger scale. “I think it was a fantastic show unlike any other reality shows. It wasn’t restricted to contestants only but was more like open platform where singers came and connected with the audience. Music Ka Maha Muqqabla is one show, which I would like to bring back on a much bigger scale and better than before. We might even tweak the format,” he informed.
