  • Zee Kannada to have exclusive content for HD channel

Zee Kannada to have exclusive content for HD channel

MUMBAI: If there’s any broadcaster known to be a pioneer it’s the Zee Network. With a wide reach in the regional part of India, Zee already has leadership positions in Bangla, Marathi and Bhojpuri markets as per BARC data week 48. Now it wants to buck up in the Kannada market with the newly launched HD channel for its GEC.

The rationale behind the revamp and the launch of HD channel was the changing mindsets of the ambitious Kannadiga wanting to break free from things that are holding them back in life, wanting to thrive and become the architect of their own lives. Building on the consumer sentiment, a new brand proposition 'Bayasid'dha Bāgilu Tegiyōṇa', which translates to “Open Doors to Possibilities”, was planned to inspire women to rise above their circumstances and craft their own destiny.

Zee Kannada’s market share in the weeks 14-20 was 22 per cent from week average of 21-39 that came to 27 per cent (total TV). Its relative share grew by 6 per cent i.e., from 19 per cent in FY16 to 25 per cent in FY19, till week 39 (total market). The channel grew rapidly from 295 GRPs in FY16 to 546 GRPs in FY19 (week 39) and registered an 85 per cent growth in both urban and rural markets.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Zee Kannada business head Raghavendra Hunsur said that most of the content on Zee Kannada will be showcased on the new HD channel, accompanied by the new brand proposition which will provide viewers a whole new content line up offering a complete visual experience with its new HD channel.

“We are still working out our exclusive content offering for the HD channel and will speak about it when the time is right. All our content reflects the changing mindsets of our viewers and is deeply rooted in our culture and tradition,” he added.

As per BARC data week 48, Zee Kannada stood at second position with 389247 impressions (000s) sum, followed by Udaya TV, Udaya Movies and Colors Super securing third, fourth and fifth positions respectively with 196316 impressions (000s) sum, 188975 impressions (000s) sum and 141803 impressions (000s) sum. Meanwhile, Colors Kannada garnered leadership position with 450055 impressions (000s) sum.

The channel’s overall promotional and marketing strategy included brand refresh teasers, a brand film, and four fiction promos that would bring alive the brand promise. Speaking about which genre is working well with the Kannadigas, Hunsur said that both fiction and non-fiction genres have been doing extremely well. But in terms of ratings, non-fiction offerings have been growing phenomenally year on year.

He further added, “We are also witnessing impressive growth in the fiction genre, which offers differentiated content reflective of today’s changing mindsets, deeply rooted in our culture and tradition and based on our extensive research and insights.”

He claimed that the characters and protagonists have resonated well with the audience. Giving more information about Zee Kannada’s flagship shows, he named Comedy Khiladigalu and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs (season 14), Naagini and Kamali.

Echoing the new brand positioning of Zee Kannada, the channel underwent a brand refresh with the key existing fiction and non-fiction shows that included Kamali, Brahmagantu, Jodi Hakki, Subbalakshmi Samsara, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Season 15, Shree Vishnu Dashavatara, and soon-to-be-launched Paru and Aatma Bandhana.

As per the KPMG in India's Media and Entertainment Report 2018, the Kannada segment saw a 63 per cent change in viewership in the year 2017 compared to 2016. When it comes to language-wise AdEx split based on ad value, Tamil and Marathi saw a marginal decline of 2 per cent and 9 per cent respectively while other major ones like Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Malayalam and Oriya saw a growth in their contribution to the overall AdEx in FY18.

Most watched Hindi GEC primetime programmes by urbanites in 2017

BENGALURU: In earlier papers, we had discussed the most watched Hindi GEC primetime programmes in the Hindi Speaking Market (HSM – U+R) and the HSM – Rural markets in India. We also mentioned the genres that both markets preferred. Both the reports were based on the weekly viewership ratings of the top 5 primetime programmes in the HSM (U+R) and the HSM (R) markets respectively published by Broadcast Audience Research Council of Indi (BARC) during the first 39 weeks of 2017.

It must be noted that the ratings (impressions) mentioned for the programmes in this paper may not represent the actual ratings during the first 39 weeks of 2017. The ratings in the paper are a sum of the ratings garnered by a programme only when it has appeared in BARC’s top 5 programmes list during the period under consideration. Hence the actual ratings could be higher.

So what Hindi GEC programmes does the urban Indian watch during primetime? Continuing with BARC data for the primetime (1830 to 2130 hours) HSM (U) NCCS 2+ individuals market as a reference, HSM (U) leads the HSM (U+R) market in terms of the most liked programmes during primetime, well almost… As in the case of the HSM (U+R), Balaji Telefilms productions Kumkum Bhagya and Naagin 2 are the genre leaders in that order. With a slight reshuffle, it is the long running Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai on Star Plus that is the third most watched Hindi GEC primetime programme in the HSM urban market, displacing the reality show Amul Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs on Zee TV to fourth place form its third place in the larger HSM (U+R) market.  And there is more, urbanites seem to prefer the sitcom Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chasmah on Sony Pal during primetime, as compared to the overall HSM market that prefers the Balaji Telefilms produced family soap and spinoff – Kundali Bhagya. Please refer to the figure below for the ratings of the top five watched Hindi GEC primetime programmes by HSM urban India during the first 39 weeks of 2017.

  • 2014: A year of change for GECs

2014: A year of change for GECs

2014 was a year of change and evolution for Zee TV. The game is not over yet, I think we are still evolving everyday and so are our audiences and that is the real excitement. This year, we saw a lot of buzz and excitement on the channel, around the new properties and we are carving our own identity year-on-year in the general entertainment space.

The channel created some extraordinary concepts in 2014 and now we are seen as a channel that has clutter-breaking ideas within the traditional format. We have launched shows with very different type of protagonists from Jamai Raja to Bandhan.

We also came up with a weekend block of Zee Super weekends with Maharakshak Aryan and Neeli Chatri Waale and the other non-fiction shows. So, there was an attempt to provide differentiated content to the viewers and yet something that they will be familiar with very easily. This year, we have also observed a very quick traction for all our new shows. Be it for Kumkum Bhagya or Jamai Raja and even Neeli Chatri Waale which has seen strong growth within eight and nine weeks of its launch.

We are happy that people are attracted to the differentiated content that we are providing. 2014 was also a year of experiments in the non-fiction category, right from finding talent in India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj to Dil Se Naachein Indiawaale. Moreover, we are now coming back to the traditional Zee show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs as we enter the last leg of the year.

The idea is to be happy with whatever you do because I think from a product and positioning point of view we have changed in the last nine months. We made a conscious shift about how we look and feel. There is certain uniformity in what we are doing and a certain sense of it coming together. The numbers have been good, so satisfied at that level. We are aligned with the legacy of Zee and yet evolving in a direction that we want to take the channel in.

I see the same evolution being mirrored in the rest of the industry as well. Channels are providing content that is in the familiar zone but with very different types of protagonists and very different propositions. You may feel like you are watching a show which is in a genre that looks familiar but the story, characters, subjects, the way stories are presented are all different. There is a sense of innovation which broadcasters are giving and audiences are accepting. I think this is a beginning of a good phase.

Not only Zee, but talking about the whole industry, what we as broadcasters will continue doing is living and breathing what our audiences want and giving them that.

In 2014, we at Zee have started a new journey and it will take us to a very different place from where we were before. I hope the audiences will be with us in the journey.
