Pubcaster not consulted on new DD News appointment: Prasar Bharati officials

NEW DELHI: The order posting Veena Jain to head the news channel of Doordarshan as director general and noting that the officer ‘will report to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry for all purposes’ has come as a surprise to many as it implies that DD News is to be directly controlled by the Ministry.

However, Prasar Bharati officials told Indiantelevision.com that this has been the case since the inception of DD News.

All India Radio has 45 news units while DD has 30 news units around the country, and all are headed by Indian Information Service (IIS) officers posted by the Ministry.

Senior Prasar Bharati Advisor Brig. V A M Hussain told the website that Section 11(B)(2) of the Prasar Bharati Act 1990 clearly states that the Ministry must consult or seek advice of the pubcaster before making such appointments. Under the same Act, Prasar Bharati was made into an autonomous organisation.

However, in this case, a copy of the Ministry’s order was not even marked to Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar.

Reacting to a news report about this, Hussain tweeted, ‘Never consulted Prasar Bharati in past/Fact is Never handed over News.’

Answering a question, he said that DD had 24 channels and DD News is the only one where the IIS officers are directly answerable to the Ministry and are posted without consultation with the pubcaster.

In fact, Sircar has written to the Ministry several times in the past in this connection but has not received a reply.

The pubcaster had also reacted strongly when S M Khan had been removed unceremoniously last year and placed on compulsory wait.

During the run-up to the elections, Khan was reported to have delayed the transmission of Narendra Modi’s interview to Doordarshan. Answering a query about editing out certain portions, he had sad this was done only because of references made about persons who had not been given an opportunity to have their say.

New series on DD News to highlight ecological threats to river Ganga

NEW DELHI: ‘Taaki Bahti Rahe Ganga,’ a show that traces the course of the holy river Ganga from its source Gangotri to Gangasagar even as it conveys the message of keeping the waters clean and pure, has been launched by DD News.

The six-episode documentary which commenced telecast from 6 July, will be aired every Sunday at 9:30 pm with a repeat telecast on Monday at 3:30pm. It is documentation by three reporters who have made an effort to make it interactive.

They have interviewed and taken opinions of those who are living on the bank of the river in different parts of the country. The reporters have also taken views of scientists, environmentalists, religious leaders and policy makers and this helped them get to the root cause of issues like pollution, erosion, floods, unregulated urbanisation, mindless development and encroachment along Ganga.

The channel has made this documentary series to activate the people on the banks where it flows into taking care of river waters which give them so much.

DD News DG S M Khan said, “This is not a generic show which only talks about the matter-of-the-fact problems but deals with pulsating problems pertaining to specific regions. For example, in Uttarakhand, the focus is on the factors affecting the flow of the river while pollution and health issues dominate the discussion in Uttar Pradesh and the main concern in Bihar and Bengal is over pollution and erosion.”

Doordarshan News is giving high priority to creating awareness about the problems concerning the holy river of the country and is generating participation of people to address the problems.

  • DD to launch English news channel by July

DD to launch English news channel by July

NEW DELHI: Doordarshan hopes to launch a separate English news channel by July this year by splitting the present bilingual English-Hindi news channel.

DD News Director General S M Khan told indiantelevisiom.com he was confident of achieving the target of July for creating two news channels – English and Hindi – from the existing DD News channel.

He said the public broadcaster had conducted a survey which showed that viewers favoured separate channels for the two languages.

He was also confident that both the news channels — DD Samachar and DD News — will continue to get adequate advertisement support.

Khan said the two channels would pool news and work in unison. Some new programmes were also being planned as there would be more time available on both the news channels.

DD Director General Tripurari Sharan said that discussions and news will be presented in one-hour format for both Hindi and English news.

Attempts have also been made to make use of appropriate technology to upgrade the standard of presentation, Sharan said.
