#FinanciallyEqual: It’s time to separate finance from gender

MUMBAI: While modern Indian women do not lack ambition or ability when it comes to financial conversations, many are still surprisingly uncertain and not confident. To date, the importance of financial knowledge for women has not been given its due significance. It is primarily believed and followed that men handle financial matters better and are the ones who should be in control.

Despite not being widely spoken about, the matter of financial literacy poses deep questions we need to ask ourselves today, especially in the context of gender disparity in Indian society.

Consequently, Dentsu Impact India has partnered with fintech platform Paytm to launch an impactful social experiment – #FinanciallyEqual – that centres around this very topic.

An experiment conducted by award-winning director Ruchi Narain, the campaign has aimed to make viewers realise that making women in India financially literate and confident is a major and crucial step on the path to practicing gender equality. The film urges the audience to separate gender from finance, while driving home the point that every one of us, regardless of gender, needs to be adequately aware about money management and the financial decisions of our lives.

  • Hanuman Da’ Damdaar….Kid stuff

Hanuman and Ganesh seem to be the most popular figures / gods for Indian animation filmmakers. Also, among them, the favourite theme is the two idols’ childhood because that allows a maker to spin any convenient story around them.

Also, dealing with one character keeps budgets in control unlike making an animated Ramayana or Mahabharata.

For any such animated film, its claim to fame is which all renowned film actors lent their voice, to dub for the animated characters. Hanuman Da’ Damdaar boasts of quite a celebrity list landing its voice to the animated characters.

The little Hanuman is back from one more dangerous adventure after which a curfew is imposed on him. He can’t leave home. But, you can’t keep Hanuman down for long, and off he is on another adventure. He is now the mighty Hanuman the myth about him has told us all along.

There was a lineup of such animation films a few years ago and the flooding did not help anybody’s cause. Hanuman Da’ Damdaar tries to be different in that it is some renowned film personalities giving voice to the animated characters. They include Salman Khan, Javed Akhtar, Raveena Tandon, Makarand Deshpande, Hussain Dalal and Kunal Kemmu.

The film also takes the contemporary language today’s youth use in its efforts to add humour.

The film boasts of good animation generally while music is also a help. Where it lacks is in content as it has nothing exciting to tell or add to match the persona of the legend, Hanuman, from earlier such attempts.

Producers: Ashutosh Shah, Taher Shabbir, Ruchi Narain.

    Direction: Ruchi Narain.

Cast/Voice: Salman Khan, Javed Akhtar, Raveena Tandon, Makarand Deshpande, Hussain Dalal and Kunal Kemmu.

    Dharma disappointed, Johar pushes hard

The team Dharma Productions distribution team of Vishal Patel and Cherian expressed disappointment at the way the market has been proceeding. “There have been very few footfalls,” says Cherian. “We expect an improvement by tomorrow.”

The big title being promoted at the stand is Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna.

Karan Johar spent many a hour at the stand today. The Johar box office magic may rub off on Dharma’s Cannes performance as well.
Indian unity shows up at Cannes

What is amazing about this Cannes festival is how the independents have been propping up each other. The Adlabs stand has brochures and promotional materials from almost every Indian film maker in the Palais. Handmade Films’ Sunil Doshi who has a stand in a prime location in the Palais des Festivals basement even lent a hand to the indies by stocking their promotional literature at his stand. A pat in the back for the indie Indians. In fact, a bash for the indies was planned for the evening at the Irish Quays pub.
