    UTV targets June launch of youth channel with Astro

    MUMBAI: UTV Software Communications’ joint venture with Astro of Malaysia is fast taking shape. The youth-centric channel, aimed at the age-group of 17-25 years, is set for launch by June.

    “We are working on the content research. We plan to launch the channel by June,” says UTV Communications COO Ronald D’Mello.

    UTV will be investing Rs 1 billion in its 50:50 venture with Astro in broadcasting.

    “We will be expanding to a 360 degree entertainment venture including a TV channel as the anchor, to be flanked by activities on the internet, new media, ground events, merchandising and licensing,” says D’Mello.

    UTV will be releasing DVDs of Don and Khosla Ka Ghosla this quarter. Namesake will have an international and national release in the third week of March.

    UTV has posted a consolidated revenue of Rs 704 million, which includes capital gains of Rs 263 million from the sale of United Home Entertainment Ltd (Hungama TV), for the third quarter ended 31 December 2006.

    Net profit stood at Rs 283 million while EBITDA was at Rs 303 million for the period. The company has consolidated the financials of UESL, UTV-US, UTV-UK and UTV-Mauritius.
    UTV also announced an interim dividend of 25 per cent.

    Commenting on the results UTV CEO Ronnie Screwvala said, “The quarter has been a very eventful one; while the Hungama TV deal with The Walt Disney Company was consummated during the quarter, the Company also decided to make investments in two gaming companies – Ignition Entertainment and Indiagames Ltd in console and mobile space respectively. With these proposed investments UTV has acquired worldwide capabilities of content creation and distribution across all gaming platforms.”

    UTV has entered into exclusive sales and marketing tie up with Radaan Media, the largest TV production house in South India. “This will result in significant growth in Television businesses in the months to come. In addition to this and as a step towards entering the South Indian film production space, UTV has tied up with Radaan for co-production of all South Indian films,” Screwvala added.

    UTV is acquiring a 70 per cent stake in Ignition Entertainment Ltd (UK based company with interests in console game development, publishing and distribution across the globe) as well as a controlling stake in IndiaGames (gaming company in India, with interests in mobile and online gaming) for a total consideration of Rs 1.28 billion.

    UTV has inducted Walt Disney International president Andy Bird and Pantaloon’s Kishore Biyani as non executive directors.

    UTV, ISRO & Vigyan Prasar co-produce quiz show Chamatkar, to premiere on DD1

    MUMBAI: UTV has tied up with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Vigyan Prasar to produce a quiz show, Chamatkar. Slated to kick off on 3 September at 9 am on Doordarshan 1 (DD1), the 26 episode series aims to introduce science in a fun, non-intimidating way. Sachin Khedekar will anchor the show.

    UTV COO Ronald D’Mello said, ”Through Chamatkar we plan to provide a refreshers course on the fundamentals in Science all over again through an interesting and exciting format of a quiz show, which will appeal to a larger target audience, not like the usual quiz shows that usually just has straight forward questions and answers.”

    The show adopts a simplistic approach with an aim to explain the basics of science to the layman. Questions will be related to things around us that will allow participants and viewers to explore the world of science in their daily lives and understand how it works. The principles of science will also be illustrated with experiments performed on the set by the anchor Sachin Khedekar.

    Sachin Khedekar adds, “Being an Environment Engineer myself, it gives me immense pleasure to be associated with Chamatkar, which aims at educating and entertaining simultaneously”.

    ISRO director of Development and Educational Communication Unit B. S. Bhatia says “We are happy to be associated with UTV through this quiz show and looking forward to making science easy and relatable for the viewers.”

    Vigyan Prasar director V. S. Kamble says, “Through Chamatkar, we hope to achieve our primary objective of popularising the subject of science. We are happy to constantly share information on scientific and technological developments taking place in India with the masses.”

    The series commences with the preliminary rounds of the West Zone and will be followed by the West Zonal finals. The pattern will be repeated for the other four zones i.e. South, North, East and Central zones. It will finally end with the zonal finalists competing in the National finals.

    UTV Toons inks animation deals with Porchlight, Mike Young

    MUMBAI: UTV Toons, the animation arm of media conglomerate UTV Software Communications Ltd, has inked co-production and animation outsourcing deals worth $ 14 million with Porchlight Entertainment and Mike Young Productions.

    UTV will jointly produce and finance with Porchlight Entertainment a 3D animated feature film, Jay Jay’s Race Around The World, slated for theatrical release during Christmas 2007. Budgeted at $10 million, the feature is based on the popular award winning preschool series, Jay Jay The Jet Plane.

    Scripting for the feature is already underway and pre-production will begin in October at UTV in Mumbai and PorchLight Entertainment in Los Angeles. The entire production will be carried out at UTV Toons. The marketing and distribution strategy of the feature will be jointly created and implemented by the two companies who will have an equal and perpetual share in revenues and exploitation of the property.

    The other co-production deal is with Mike Young Productions’ distribution arm Taffy Entertainment and Method Film France for TV series of Cosmic Quantum Ray (26 episodes x 22 minutes). UTV Toons will have a perpetual 20 per cent share of worldwide revenues and the studio’s investment in this co-production is around $1 million, which would be part payment and part in sweat equity.

    Besides the two co-production deals, UTV Toons has also bagged an animation services contract worth $ 3 million from Mike Young Productions. The service contract is a total of 13 hours of 3D animation for a variety of Direct to DVD as well as TV episodes.

    Speaking to Indiantelevision.com’s sister concern Animation Xpress.com, UTV COO Ronald Dmello said, “These deals signify an important step in the growth and development of UTV within the animation space. They mark a significant step towards the addition of some very high profile titles into UTV’s animation portfolio and an entry into the elite animated feature film makers’ club.”

    “This is the next step in globally maximising the Jay Jay brand,” said PorchLight CEO and executive producer of Jay Jay the Jet Plane Bruce Johnson. “We took the success of Jay Jay on PBS and grew it into a recognisable licensing brand. Now, having added new characters, new storylines and the PBS Sprout platform to the series, it’s logical to align ourselves with the talents of UTV and produce Jay Jay in a long form format.”

    Commenting on the deal, Mike Young Productions & Taffy Entertainment co-CEO Mike Young said, “We are very excited about starting this new relationship. We expect to benefit hugely from the abilities and experience of UTV’s animation studio and also their pedigree and depth as a media company.”

    The newly announced deals add to the already bountiful UTV Toons order book where production is on in full swing. Starting July, the studio will be delivering 14 direct to DVD titles back to back to BKN. Deliveries on Freej (15 x 22 mins) where UTV Toons is involved right from pre to post, have also begun.

  • Ronald D’Mello appointed COO of UTV; Zarina Mehta is COO Hungama TV

    Mumbai: UTV Software Communications, India’s leading and most respected integrated media and entertainment companies announced that Mr. Ronald D’Mello, Director – Operations & Finance, will now take on the responsibilities of Chief Operating Officer of UTV Software Communications Ltd.

    In his new role, Mr. D’Mello will be fully responsible for the day to day operational management of the Company, including running of each of the profit centres as also all aspects of implementation, Finance, HR, Legal, cost management and business servicing. Associated with the industry since 1991, he has played a key role in its evolution and been an active participant in industry initiatives at various levels including State and Central Government. Mr. D’Mello joined UTV in 1992 and has played a crucial role in the Company’s evolution.

    In another development, Ms. Zarina Mehta, Founder Director of UTV and Head of Programming, Hungama TV, will now take on the responsibilities of Chief Operating Officer, Hungama TV. In her new role, Ms. Mehta will oversee all aspects of Channel operations and management.

    A graduate in Economics (Honours) from the Mumbai University, Ms. Mehta is one of the three founding members of the company. Over the last 15 years, she has been responsible for the start-up and creation of some of UTV’s major divisions and has produced over 3500 hours of high TRP, award-winning television programming in multiple languages. A multi-award-winning director of corporate documentaries with a passion for children’s television, her initial training was as a theatre actor, where she performed in several leading productions.
