Chris Gayle creates history in CWC 2015

MUMBAI: The Caribbean giant known for his flamboyant hitting of the cricket ball Christopher Henry Gayle has scored the first double century in the history of World Cup cricket. The southpaw hammered Zimbabwe all over the park in Canberra to score 215 of just 147 balls with the help of 16 sixes and 10 fours.

After achieving the milestone the Jamican told Star Sports, “Getting a bit of cramps, feeling a bit tired. We still have 50 overs to get through. I didn’t want to be out with the first ball. I said “you can’t be serious?” I just want to thank god for this knock. I was under pressure to score runs, and I kept getting messages from twitter and on my cell phone. I have never felt this kind of pressure, but in the end, I am sure I gave them something to talk about. It was a bit slow at the start, not to mention keeping it low. I just tried to take the bull by the horns and hang out there and try and build an innings. After a while I was able to pick a bowler to target and then, in the end, I was out off the last ball (chuckles). A lot of time people don’t know what you are going through as I had some issues with injuries. I am also not getting any younger so age is definitely catching up on me. Overall I am really happy, and I just want to try and build on this as much as possible. Want to build on this momentum and move ahead as we look towards the South Africa game. It was a bit easier to bat later on. I am very happy to get this first double hundred and ever since Rohit got two, I have been hounded to get one as well.”

He was well accompanied by Marlon Samuels who scored undefeated 133 runs. The right hand – left hand partnership yielded West Indies 372 runs.

The milestones achieved in the match were:

    · Chris Gayle became the first cricketer to score a double century in World Cup history.

    · He is also the first Non – Indian to score a double century. Sachin Teldulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma were the only batsmen to reach the milestone before.

    · The 372 runs partnership between Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels broke Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid’s 318 runs partnership record to take the pole position in World Cup cricket.

    · The Gayle – Samuels partnership (372) also broke Sachin – Dravid’s (331) to register highest partnership in One Day International cricket for any wickets.

    · Gayle scored 16 mammoth sixes to equal the record of most sixes in an innings. He shares the record with South African AB de Villiers.

  • Rohit Sharma wins ODI batsman of the year

Rohit Sharma wins ODI batsman of the year

MUMBAI: Brendon McCullum, Mitchell Johnson, Rohit Sharma, Lasith Malinga, Alex Hales and Rangana Herath are amongst the winners of the eighth edition of annual ESPNcricinfo Awards for the best batting and bowling performances in Tests, ODIs and T20s in 2014.

The winners were picked by a jury consisting of Rahul Dravid, Ian Chappell, Ricky Ponting, Ajit Agarkar, Russel Arnold, Martin Crowe, Michael Bevan, Mark Butcher, Aakash Chopra, Daryll Cullinan, Michael Holding, Mark Nicholas, Ramiz Raja and Graeme Smith. Also part of the jury were ESPNcricinfo’s senior writers, Sambit Bal, Sharda Ugra, Sidharth Monga, Brydon Coverdale, Mohammad Isam, David Hopps, Osman Samiuddin, Jarrod Kimber, Firdose Moonda, Daniel Brettig, Andrew Fernando and George Dobell.

Winners for each category were picked from shortlists of between nine and 14 performances selected by ESPNcricinfo staff.

Brendon McCullum’s 302 against India was the first triple-hundred by a New Zealander in Tests, and came at the start of a year in which he scored 1164 Test runs.

Mitchell Johnson’s seven for 68 against South Africa in Centurion saw him in arguably more fearsome form than he was during his Ashes-winning performances earlier in the season back home in Australia. It was Johnson’s second consecutive ESPNcricinfo Award in the category.

Rohit Sharma’s 264 against Sri Lanka was his second double-hundred in ODIs (the first won in this category at last year’s ESPNcricinfo Awards), and the third by an Indian, following Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag.

Lasith Malinga, who won in the best ODI bowling category for his 5 for 56 in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan, is also a former ESPNcricinfo Award winner.

Both winning performances in the shortest format came from the World T20: Rangana Herath’s 5 for 3 demolished New Zealand in a tournament Sri Lanka went on to win. Alex Hales won the batting award for his 116 not out against Sri Lanka, which came off 97 balls and took England to a six-wicket win.

ESPNcricinfo editor-in-chief Sambit Bal said, “2014 has been an exciting year of cricket and we saw the emergence of some real champions. We want to reward champions who made a difference to cricket through their performances over the last 12 months. Selecting these winners was a daunting task, to say the least, for all the jury members, considering the immense talent that was on display. We wish the winners all the success in the world, and hope they take the gentleman’s game to greater heights.”

They are team that gives it back. And given the fact that we are defending champions we felt won’t give it back was an interesting way to capture this attitude.”

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 will be broadcast on Star Sports network. India kicks off its title defense on 15 February, when they face-off against arch-rivals Pakistan. The tournament will be broadcast in six languages (Hindi, English, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Bengali). Sharma will spearhead the company’s aggressive foray into new real estate projects and new geographies in India. The group already has an impressive presence in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Delhi and will enter Punjab and Madhya Pradesh very soon.

The group would now have the benefit of Rohit Sharma’s star power and endorsement as they usher in global and many “first-time-in-India” concepts in Real estate (residential, commercial and retail) and expand their significant presence in entertainment (targeting 100 screens by mid-2015 across India) and the hospitality sector (targeting 25 chains of restaurants by mid-2015 across India).

  • Percept/H carries out the creative duties for Arise India’s ad campaign for Asia Cup 2014

Percept/H carries out the creative duties for Arise India’s ad campaign for Asia Cup 2014

MUMBAI: Percept/H the advertising arm of Percept Limited carried out the creative duties for its client Arise which has recently bagged the sponsorship rights of Asia Cup 2014.

Three TVC’s were conceptualized for this campaign. The first TVC opens with two constables chatting at a tea stall. One of them says that if this year Rohit Sharma goes on number three, India will win the matches. The listening constable doesn’t believe him and asks if there is any guarantee. The second TVC shows two kids discussing cricket. While one of them is sure that if a certain technique is applied while pitching, the match will be theirs. The other child asks for a guarantee. Similarly, in the third TVC two women are seen talking in the beauty parlour. One of them speaks about how if there was a handsome sardar, we would win the match. Her friend doesn’t believe her and asks for a guarantee instead. The TVC then continues with a voiceover declaring that there is a guarantee in Arise products.

Jayant Bedi, Associate Creative Director – Percept/H said “Cricket is the most favourite sport in India. But the funny thing is we all think we know the best about cricket. So we will decide how one should bat and what the umpire should have done. We behave like we are the next selectors. The campaign has been made keeping that humour in mind. But we also wanted to show that even if there is no guarantee of India winning, Arise will give you a guarantee of an assured prize. And ‘hai guarantee’ was already the brand slogan in earlier TVCs. We just decided to extend it with this as we thought this is the most opportune moment to create something for brand recall,”

S.Suresh, Sr. Vice President – Percept/H The Asia Cup was a great opportunity for us to come up with a great campaign, specifically keeping the brand promise ‘Arise hai Guarantee’ in focus and extending the brand essence into entertainment zone and taking it the next level of ‘entertainment ki hai guarantee’. Since the brand was the Title Sponsor for the tournament. The idea was to enhance the brand’s image as well as to make an immediate impact with the TVCs. Cricket is big in India and it becomes easy to grab eyeballs during live telecast of matches if you have an effective idea to show. The theme of the films was based around cricket along with highlighting the promo, as Arise was guaranteeing prizes and gifts. As an agency, our task was to showcase the brand by getting people to relate to it, and ensure that ‘Arise hai Guarantee’ becomes the next oft-spoken term by the masses.

Avinash Jain, MD – Arise India, said, “We all know the strong emotional connect that cricket has with Indians and in the Asia Pacific. It is thus to support the greater thrust of the sport that we have decided to be the title sponsor. This tournament is known for witnessing the most competitive cricket in the sub-continent, and with our association with the event, we seek to create an even stronger audience connect for the brand. Cricket is a game which is religiously followed across the sub-continent and this Endeavour will going forward help us in our ambitious expansion plans and in creating a viable space for the emergent brand across the sub-continent markets. This I’m sure will reflect the spirit of cricket and positive ties between the nations which we strongly advocate.”

Manish Bhardwaj, Marketing & Media Head, Arise India, added, “Associating with the Asia Cup is a fantastic opportunity for us to garner great brand awareness across the sub-continent as this is the showcase cricket competition of the area. This association for us is not just a short-term strategy but is a long-term investment wherein we seek greater market penetration across the sub-continent markets. We  are confident that this association will aid in pushing through our consumer electrical appliances into these markets.”

  • ‘We are talking with global companies to set up a studio to develop content’ : Rohit Sharma- Zapak Digital Entertainment COO

‘We are talking with global companies to set up a studio to develop content’ : Rohit Sharma- Zapak Digital Entertainment COO

With a war chest of $100 million (Rs 4 billion), Reliance Entertainment’s online gaming portal Zapak is looking to invest in infrastructure and expand even beyond the frontiers of India. The portal is going to launch in China, Pakistan and the UAE.

In an interview with Indiantelevision.com’s Ashwin Pinto, Zapak Digital Entertainment COO Rohit Sharma talks about the global plans of the gaming portal and the steps that are being taken to reach there.

    Excerpts:

When George Soros picked up a 3 per cent stake in Reliance Entertainment for $100 million, how big was Zapak as a valuation attraction?
It was definitely a point of attraction as it is one of our oldest businesses. Since Zapak is one of the most successful internet companies in India, it gives value to investors. However, I cannot talk about valuations. The investment has helped us understand what our value is and how we can scale it up.

How much is Zapak going to invest and what is the breakeven period?
Since gaming is still at a nascent stage in this country, the breakeven will not happen before four to five years. We are investing $100 million over the next five years. In terms of operational expenditure, we have to invest in manpower, bandwidth and marketing activities. In terms of capital expenditure, we are investing in infrastructure as well as technology and content. Our costs will go up each year as the business grows.

What are the lines of synergy Zapak is drawing with the other verticals of Reliance Entertainment?
We have the movie business with Adlabs. A lot of content alliancing will happen here as we acquire content, produce and co-produce it. Zapak will also develop content based on these movies.

There are strong synergies between Big Flicks and Zapak as both are located in the internet space. Bigadda is our social networking site and the audience is similar. So we do a lot of cross-promotional activities. And with our FM radio business, we use it as an advertising medium.

Thus, if we take the gaming piece in the entertainment space, there is a lot of content syndication, retail syndication and advertising opportunities that are possible.

What are the trends being seen in online gaming in India?
Zapak is setting the trends here as there is no other online gaming player in India per se. We have a 70-75 per cent market share in terms of revenues and the number of users which is four million right now. We are also attracting good advertising and so we are witnessing an upwards trend.

The learning for us is that the user wants compelling content. Therefore, publishers/developers like us need to invest in the right kind of content. The content, whether global or local, has to be high-end in terms of graphics, artwork, game play and design.

The kids genre has done well for us. Zapak Girls also does well as do our action oriented games. But cricket is our biggest property

    Who comprises your TG?
Surprisingly consumers have an equal ratio between the top cities and B, C towns and cities. Males in the age group 12-25 are the core TG. Having said that, however, youngsters below 12 are increasingly playing on Zapak. They are becoming stickier towards gaming.

How does the market size for online games compare with mobile gaming?
If you look at developed gaming markets like China, Korea and Vietnam, online gaming has surpassed mobile gaming. In countries that have a strong PC and online penetration, online gaming offers a better user experience. The best part about online gaming is that you can form communities that you cannot have on the mobile.

Could you shed light on the strategy being followed to increase the product portfolio?
When we started, we focused on casual games, which is the low hanging fruit. There is no point getting hardcore games to non-gamers. We brought in world-class casual games into the country. We work with over 50 studios globally.

Having built a critical mass of gamers, we want to expose them to better content. We are going into the next phase which is to bring in casual hardcore games and hardcore games.

Hardcore games are played in cafes and most cafes do not have the right PC specifications and infrastructure for this. This is why we started our gameplexes across the country. We will have almost 10,000 seats by the end of this year. We started our gameplex business in the big cities and towns. Now we have expanded to smaller places like Jaipur where we are also getting good traction.

What have been your top five properties?
The kids genre has done well for us. Zapak Girls also does well as do our action-oriented games. But cricket is our biggest property. You need to have a hybrid model. Generally, in business it is a 80:20 ratio where 20 per cent of content gives you 80 per cent of traction.

However, in casual online gaming, the long tail is also important. A lot of people who come back, also want to check out the catalogue in addition to consuming the same content twice or thrice. Therefore, you need to build on your catalogue.

Zapak has done activities to get women and children involved in gaming. What prompted this?
The 12-25 male TG is still being built up. It has not been fully tapped. However, we have gone into early segmentation. We want every gamer in this country to relate with Zapak. We want to have a product and a service for everyone including a four-year-old kid. Therefore, we have been broad basing our offerings.

Does Zapak also focus on game development?
We have a small in-house team but we don’t do actual game development. We outsource it. We work exclusively with studios both in India and abroad. We drive the game ideation, concept and documentation. Then they do the rest. We work with our sister company Jump Games. We work with a Delhi-based company Saffronage. However, by and large, we work with studios outside India.

There have been technological advances from a product point of view. Casual games are now incorporating social networking phenomena. Community features which are possible due to technology are growing in importance. The more features you have and the better customer relationship management setup you have, the better is the traction you will get.

Is Zapak also looking at acquisitions in the gaming space?
Yes! We will be aggressive in this regard both in India and abroad. Our targets would include game developers. In India, nobody has the competence to develop a game from scratch to finish. Besides acquiring content, we are also talking with global companies to set up a studio which could serve as a factory to develop content.

What are the different revenue sources for Zapak and how important is advergaming in the mix?
Advertising is our main revenue stream at the moment. Casual games are a portal business. We also get some revenue from our cafes and our cards business as well as events that we do. Subscription revenue will come in when we get into offering hardcore games. Users either purchase the product or subscribe on a monthly or a weekly basis. Our first product here will be three casual MMOG titles which will be launched in May and June.

Could you give me examples where Zapak has done innovations for clients?
With McDonalds, we did a deal where you buy a “Happy Meal” and get a product from Zapak. With Dominos, we did an innovation around a gaming pizza which was accompanied with goodies. We also tied up with MTV for games around their show Roadies.

There is talk about how gaming is evolving into a social activity with massively multiplayer online games (MMOG). What is your view on this?
If you look at countries like China and Korea, it is the stickiest social networking opportunity. Other entertainment options do not engage on a social level. In a virtual world, though, you live a virtual life. Already in our cafes, you see thousands of kids who live in a virtual environment.

The BCCI is kicking off the IPL in April. Are you looking to work with the franchisees to develop properties?
Yes! We are working with franchisees to develop properties that aim to reflect the sport.

Does cricket work better than Bollywood for games?
Yes! This is partly because cricket has gameplay built in. With film, you have to think about a strategy that can fit. We have worked with Bipasha Basu and Salman Khan. We also did successful games around the film Cash. However, even in Hollywood, games out of films are not generally successful. Spiderman was an exception, though. The challenge for us is to tailor Bollywood content so that it is suitable for gameplay.

Apart from cricket, are you looking at other sports?
We are looking at tennis and F1. We also feel that table tennis will translate well as an online game. We recently did a successful tennis game that Apollo sponsored. In terms of working with official sports bodies like Fifa, their licence fees are too high to justify a good RoI in India at this point of time.

What is the way forward to combat the lack of skill sets in game development in India?
Gaming has to be more widely accepted as an activity and profession. Companies from abroad have to come in and invest. We cannot grow this space all by ourselves.

How did the concept of “Zapak Corporate Gamer Challenge” come about? Do you foresee a time when gaming will be viewed as a professional sport in India?
We have a division called Zapak Live. This division organises conferences, events, tournaments, etc. We realised that a lot of casual gaming happens in the office. So it seemed like a good idea to take it to an offline level where corporates can take part. The response was good. I see no reason why gaming cannot be looked at as a sport in India a few years down the line.

One of your recent marketing innovations revolved around offering people the chance to win cash by constantly playing. How was the response to that?
It was a loyalty programme for the portal. For each activity done, participants got points. It was a three-week programme. We also do other marketing innovations. We had done a series of short films to create awareness for our e-mail product. We also do a lot of viral activities which have included spoofs on films like Sholay. We also did innovative stuff in loos in multiplexes.

Finally, is Zapak looking at expanding abroad?
We are looking to launch our portal in China, Pakistan and the UAE. You will see launches from the next quarter. Our USP is content that is not India-centric; it appeals to a global audience. It is a question of customisation from a language point of view.

Koneru Humpy, the Reigning World Junior Champion, only 33 ELO points away from being called ‘Super Grandmaster Champion’ and Tania Sachdeva, the Reigning Asian Junior Girls Champion, unveiled the game and showcased the gameplay.

Speaking about the performance of the portal on this occasion, Zapak COO Rohit Sharma, said, “We have become the fastest growing portal in less than two months from launch reaching 5,00,000 registrations and crossing 5,00,00,000 page views.

The performance of the portal has surely exceeded our expectations and we are continuously adding new features on our website so that we exceed our players’ expectations. In fact we have even witnessed registrations from Vishakhapatnam, Siliguri, Jabalpur, Ludhiana, etc besides the Metros and even International Locations.

Computer gaming the world over is dominated by males – almost 85% of the gamers are male, however according to Sharma, Zapak has around 25-30% female subscribers, a swing from the norm, while discussing the current three TVC’s on air which focus on males. The TVCs’ have been created by Marketing Ants, while the Reliance internal team handles the media part. Over the last two months since the launch of the gaming site around Rs.45 million have been spent on the media campaign according to Reliance Entertainment president Rajesh Sawhney.

According to Reliance estimates, the global gaming industry is worth around US$45 billion and is expected to grow to US$53 billion (which would make it larger than the Hollywood film industry), while that of the Indian industry is expected to grow to US$424 million by 2010.
