    Best of Indian cinema on DD Bharati every Saturday

    NEW DELHI: Doordashan’s cultural channel DD Bharati, which has been telecasting some gems from the Best of Indian Cinema every week, is slated to telecast the Marathi film Shevri and the Kannada film Kanasemba Kudureyaneri during this month.

     

    Under this series, Doordarshan along with the West Bengal government had telecast six Bangla films earlier this month – for the first time in a hall. It featured some award-winning and renowned films like ‘The Last Lear’ by Rituparno Ghosh, ‘Nishhabd’ by Jahar Kanungo, and ‘Kalbela’ by Goutam Ghose. Other films are ‘Prohor’ by Subhadro Choudhury, ‘Ellar Chaar Adhyay’ by Bappaditya Bandopadhyaya, ‘Mahul Banir Sereng’ by Sekhar Das. Some of these are slated to come on DD Bharati shortly.

     

    Under the series launched to coincide with the centenary of Indian cinema, the films are telecast every Saturday at 8.30 pm and repeated at2.30 am and 20.30 pm the next day.

     

    Under this section, the films have to be either winners of the Swarna Kamal Award for the Best Feature Film of the Year, a National Award winner for Best Direction, the Rajat Kamal Award for the Best Feature Film in any Indian language/dialect (including Hindi, Urdu and English), or have won the Indira Gandhi Award for the Best Film of a Director or it should have been selected for the Indian Panorama of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

     

    Films that have participated or showcased in any of 16 prominent International Film Festivals can also be screened. These festivals are- Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto, Locarno, Karlovy Vary, Nantes or Festival de 3 Continents, Rotterdam, Fribourg, Munich, Busan, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Rome, and Sydney.

     

    Shevri is a Marathi film made in 2006 by the renowned Gajendra Ahire and produced by Neena Kulkarni. Noted Marathi actress Neena Kulkarni’s maiden production venture, Shevri (wisp of cotton) is a sensitive portrayal of the havoc played by divorce in a simple middle class woman’s life. The ‘Shevri’ in the title is embodied in the films protagonist Vidya Barve played by Neena herself, a helpless little soul drifting along with winds of change in her life, without a strong will or desire of her own. The title ‘Shevri’ suggests an insignificant wisp of cotton. Her coming to terms with her state today and becoming present to her life is what gives essence to the film which will be telecast on 13 September.

     

    Girish Kasaravalli’s adaptation of Amaresh Nugadoni’s ‘Savaari’ is a film connoisseur’s delight.  Kanasemba Kudureyaneri (Riding a Stallion of a Dream) is a 2010 starring Vyjanath Biradar, Umashree and Sadashiv Brahmavar in lead roles. It won the National Award for Best Screenplay and for Best Feature film in Kannada. Kasarvalli’s use of non-linear narrative for the first time succeeds in building the audience’s curiosity. Engagingly convincing, Biradar and Umashree are seen throughout the movie in tattered clothes, getting every inch into the characters. The film will be telecast on 27 September.

    KOLKATA: “Ticket kete na ki pass niye” (Did you buy a ticket or do you have a pass?) – this is what the Kolkata government has been asking its residents.

    The state government’s Information and Cultural Affairs (I&CA) department has been running an outdoor campaign to spread awareness about its 19th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) that opened on Sunday.

    The department owns close to120 hoarding space in the city and has used almost one-third of the space for the promotion of KIFF.

    Government enlisted agencies including Arun Sign Service, Karukrit Advertising and Pioneer Publicity Corporation have been asked to maintain the hoardings for KIFF.

    “The teaser campaign has been out for some time now. It is just to spread the right word among the people about the festival,” said West Bengal Outdoor Advertising Association, treasurer and grievance committee convener, Ashif Kumar Biswas.

    While S Chakraborty from Karukrit Advertising said that the government has given two billboards to each agency in one area where one advertisement would be there to promote the festival and the other one will be used for commercial advertisement so that the agencies can recover the cost of the government hoarding. “We have got 20 by 10 feet flex from the authorities,” he said.

    When asked about the money being spent in the advertisements, the agencies said that since these billboards are owned by the department, the cost is not much.

    City based media analysts think that the teaser, which is usually a common aspect of such festivals, increases curiosity among film lovers.

    Apart from promoting the festival with outdoor campaigns, the state government has also made special efforts to pay tribute to legendary singer Manna Dey, who passed away recently and filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh, who too passed away earlier this year. While the singer’s famous songs are a part of the official theme song, the filmmaker’s unreleased movie Taak Jhaank (Sunglass) will be premiered at the festival.

    NEW DELHI: Lunch Box by Ritesh Batra, which missed the Indian selection to the Oscars by a whisker, was voted the best film at the Extravagant India awards in Paris.

     

    Path-breaking filmmaker Anurag Kashyap received the best director award for his film Ugly, which is also being featured in a retrospective of his films in Europe as part of the Europalia.India Festival.

     

    The late Rituparno Ghosh, who passed away earlier this year, was named best actor for his own film Chitrangada.

     

    Actress Vidya Balan received the best actress award for The Dirty Picture by Milan Luthria and Kahaani by Sujoy Ghosh.

     

    The Festival was held from 16 to 22 October in Paris. The jury for the feature films comprised Coline Serreau (director and President of the jury), Armand Amar (composer), Joël Farges (producer).

     

     The best documentary award went to Children of the Pyre by Rajesh S Jala while the renowned Pan Nalin’s film Faith Connection got a special jury mention.  

     

    The Jury for documentaries comprised Euzhan Palcy (director and President of the jury), Charlotte Uzu (Les Fims d’ici), and Claude Gilaizeau (Productions de la Lanterne).

     

    The film Allah is Great by Andrea Iannetta, which was produced by the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, won the Best Short film award.

     

    The Jury for short films was Jean-Charles Mille (distribution Premium Films – President of the jury), Abel Jafry (actor), and Benoit Blanchard (producer).

     

    The Feature Jury president Coline Serreau said: “The selection was fascinating, rich and diverse. We plunged into the movies with delight, and with the feeling to approach and to discover this boiling continent, in which all the contradictions of the world in future are at work.”

     

    He added: “I hope that the Indian cinema will take from now on its just place in the French public. Long life to this festival, whose 2014 edition, I would love to already know.”

     

    Euzhan Palcy said: “This first edition of the Festival offered us an Indian cinema of a high quality and which participates of the cultural diversity which the world needs. By supporting this festival, France will continue to play its leader’s role for the cultural diversity.”

     

    Happiness Distribution is distributing Batra’s film in France on 13 December, while Kashyap’s film will be released in France in March 2014.

     

    Sophie Dulac Distribution will distribute Faith Connection by Pal Nalin under the title Kumbh Mela, Les chemins de la Foi.

    The Indian Delegation comprised Irrfan Khan (actor in Lunchbox), Prakash Jha (director of Raajneeti), Sujoy Gosh (director of Kahaani), Rajesh S. Jala (director of Children of the Pyre, Andrea Ianneta (director of Allah is Great), Film Federation of India President Bijay Khemka and Secretary General Supran Sen, Manoj Srivastava who is Head of Bollywood the film City project Marwan, Ranvir Nayar who is Director of Media India, Sutapa Sikdar (scriptwriter), and  Ramesh Tekwani, President of  “Docs & Shorts”.

    Kolkata Film festival to open with late Ghosh’s unreleased movie

    KOLKATA: The 19th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) will open with the screening of an unreleased film of the iconic Rituparno Ghosh, amid the presence of a galaxy of stars including the legendary Amitabh Bachchan.

     

    “Ritu da is no more with us. But he continues to live with his immortal creations. His unreleased film Taak Jhaank (Sunglass) will be screened for the first time in the inaugural ceremony of the 19th Kolkata International Film Festival on that day,” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said.

     

    Ghosh’s satire Taak Jhaank brings together the two veterans of Bollywood – Jaya Bachchan and Naseeruddin Shah for the very first time. Ghosh died 30 May following a heart attack.

     

    The film festival to be inaugurated by Amitabh Bachchan on 10 November would be graced by a number of luminaries including megastar Shah Rukh Khan – also the state’s brand ambassador as well and versatile actor Kamal Hassan.

     

    Incidentally, the opening day of the fest will coincide with the international Test Match between India and West Indies at the Eden Gardens where batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar will be appearing for the last time before he hangs up his boots after playing the next – his 200th in Mumbai.

     

    Kolkata will be honoured to have a very eventful day on 10 November. The cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar will be playing the last day of his 199th Test match at the Eden Gardens on that day. Kolkata’s showpiece event, the KIFF will also be held on that day in the august presence of iconic Amitabh ji, Shah Rukh and Kamal Hassan. We are so lucky to have the presence of all those luminaries on a single day at Kolkata,” added Banerjee.

    Sujoy Ghosh to start shooting for Kahaani 2 after monsoon

    MUMBAI : Having earlier made Jhankar Beats in 2003, Home Delivery: Aapko… Ghar Tak in 2005, Aladin in 2009, Sujoy Ghosh established himself as a director of repute with the Vidya Balan-starrer Kahaani in 2012.

    Immediately after the resounding success of Kahaani, word spread around filmdom that Sujoy was mulling with the idea of making a sequel of the film but nothing concrete happened.

    But now, the director has made it known that the sequel in quite on the cards. “Yes, it will go on floors post monsoon as soon as Vidya finishes her other assignments,” he confirmed.

    Briefing about the kind of role that Balan would play in Kahaani 2, Ghosh observed, “Kahaani 2 will have Vidya in very different avatar, she will be seen doing some dare-devil stunts.”

    Interestingly, Ghosh is taking his first step in acting soon. He is going to play the title role of Byomkesh Bakshi in Rituparno Ghosh‘s upcoming film of the same name.
