  • Baar Baar Dekho…Akhir Kyon?

    Baar Baar Dekho…Akhir Kyon?

MUMBAI: Baar Baar Dekho, the debut directorial venture of Nitya Mehra, is a love story that spans over three decades. The makers seem to have found the basic idea from the Hollywood film, Groundhog Day (1995). Here, the idea has been used for a couple about to marry.

Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif are born in England around the same time and their parents also decide to move back to India almost at the same time. Katrina and Sidharth meet at school and become close pals at eight. Love blossoms as they grow.

Sidharth is a gifted mathematician while Katrina’s calling is modern art. Their love is boundless and both families are agreeable. It is time to get them to commit to each other and an engagement ceremony takes place. Sidharth is however not sure he wants to get married at that point in time. His first love is mathematics and he wants to prove himself as a math genius all over the world. At the time he was committing to Katrina, his research paper to Cambridge has been appreciated and he is invited to join the faculty.

While Sidharth is a middleclass man who believes in making it big on his own, his would-be father-in-law, Ram Kapoor, gifts him a car and a plush flat. This puts him off further. He has an argument with Katrina to the extent that he offends her. To escape things happening around him, he hits the bottle.

His future travel with wife Katrina is what most of this film is about. Sidharth’s life revolves round his job with little or no time for the family. His mind is so taken up by research, he is unable to connect well with his children when he meets them after gaps. Katrina expresses her displeasure with what is happening to her family life. And, to Sidharth’s discomfort, Kapoor moves in with the family to provide support to Katrina.

Sidharth’s time with his family is like a long lost relative coming back after ages. On one occasion, he is called when his mother dies. There, he realizes that his divorced wife Katrina has remarried!

Baar Baar Dekho is a kind of long-winding sermon to men and women planning marriage, and life thereafter. There is just about everything that is going wrong with the film. It starts with the scripting which jumps from one point to another failing to keep the audience informed.
Sidharth’s ‘amnesia’ is least convincing. The film is beyond the director’s control soon after it takes off. The futuristic approach with communication, be it cell phone or computer, serves no purpose; even the makeup of the aged phase of the actors looks amateur.

The film has some good songs playing in the background but don’t register as one is trying to figure out the events in the story. The popular number, Kala chashma…., is left for the end titles by which time the viewer has lost the will to stay back. Editing is sorely missing. The only thing that works for the film is the visuals. It is a beautifully shot film.
Baar Baar Dekho is a grossly disappointing film.

  • Box Office: ‘Bangistan’ bombs; ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ crosses Rs 300 crore

Box Office: ‘Bangistan’ bombs; ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ crosses Rs 300 crore

MUMBAI: Coming from a production house, which is known to churn out quality films, Bangistan fails to deliver. Produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, the movie was expected to be a commercial entertainer. However, Bangistan, inspired from a British film Four Lions – about four waylaid terrorists, is an utterly senseless film exhibiting total lack of the film medium. The film managed to put together just about Rs 1 crore on its opening Friday and despite expected improvement over Saturday and Sunday, the first weekend collections stand at a measly Rs 3.35 crore.

On the other hand, Jaanisar, was marketed as ‘From the maker of Umrao Jaan’ and to his credit, Muzaffar Ali did make Umrao Jaan and Gaman, two hugely appreciated films. However, his latest lacks the purpose and the human interest story that his previous two films had. This film lacks identification for any kind of audience, as a result of which, meets with a disastrous fate at the box office: no takers.

Ajay Devgn’s experiment with a family thriller sans action, Drishyam, does not quite work despite all three of its previous versions in Malayalam (original), Telugu and Tamil remakes making their mark at the box office as well as with critics. While critics stayed divided over handing out stars in ratings to the film, ticket buyers remained mostly indifferent. Except Devgn, that too not the way his fans like to see him, the rest came as a patch up job.  You make an economical film but admission rates remain the same at the cinema halls and audiences expect their money’s worth. After an opening weekend of Rs 27.6 crore including collections from paid previews on Thursday before regular release, the film ended its first week with Rs 41.3 crore.

Masaan could muster praise from the critics as well as few who paid to watch it but not enough to register at the box office. It added Rs 1.05 crore to its first week figures taking its two-week total to Rs 3.45 crore.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan still holds sway over the audience also getting some repeat footfalls as it collects over Rs 29.4 crore in its third week. This takes the film’s three-week tally to Rs 301.45 crore.

Bahubali: The Beginning (Hindi- Dubbed) continues to do well during its fourth week. The film has added Rs 10.9 crore to take its four-week tally to Rs 98.85 crore.

  • Indian film industry bats for simplified tax structure

Indian film industry bats for simplified tax structure

NEW DELHI: The Indian film industry is up in arms against the Goods and Services Tax Bill proposed by the government, as far as entertainment levies go.

It has been voicing its concerns on the forthcoming GST bill as the proposed bill does not subsume all the taxes levied on the film sector.

The film industry strongly feels that entertainment taxes levied by local bodies must be subsumed in the proposed GST regime. To this effect, the Film and Television Producers Guild urged the Government that all entertainment taxes, whether levied by the States or local bodies, be subsumed in the GST.

The Government can implement this proposal by making amendment to the Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill 2014 by deleting entry 62 to the List II (State List) to the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India.

In a statement, the Guild said that the Constitution (100th Amendment) Bill 2014 passed earlier this month by the Lok Sabha gives effect to change in taxing powers of the State and Central Governments and making suitable changes to introduce Goods and Services Tax in India. The Bill has now gone to the RajyaSabha.

The Bill seeks to subsume almost all indirect taxes charged by Central and State Governments.

However, the Guild noted that most of the taxes would be subsumed in GST with one notable exception of the entertainment tax levied and collected by local bodies. The Bill allows the entertainment tax to be levied and collected by local bodies (that is, panchayats and municipalities). The tax would be over and above the State and Centre GST on entertainment.

The local body entry tax (such as Octroi) estimated at Rs 14,000 crore per annum for Maharashtra alone, has been fully subsumed in GST. However, local body entertainment tax estimated at Rs 25 -Rs 30 crore across India is kept out of GST allowing such local bodies to charge an incremental entertainment tax over and above GST.

The Bill has deleted exclusive power of the Central government to tax all services and manufacture of goods (except for excise duty on tobacco products, petroleum and alcohol for human consumption). Similarly, exclusive power to tax on sale and purchase of goods, all types of entry of goods, luxury, betting and gambling and entertainment tax (unless levied and collected by local bodies) except for tax on purchase and sale of alcohol for human consumption has been taken away.

Film and Television Producers Guildpresident Mukesh Bhatt said, “Internationally, films are considered as arts and cultural ambassadors and offered many incentives and financial support governments around the world. Indian films have contributed significantly in uniting the nation and taken Indian culture to international audience. Films should be treated at par with other services and not be singled out for the additional entertainment tax. In fact, the Government implies to treat entertainment at par with sin goods such as alcohol and tobacco, which are also kept out of GST.”

An Ernst and Young report titled “Subsume entertainment tax in GST” states that supplementary levies in addition to GST are warranted only for products that are harmful to health such as tobacco and alcohol or those that are detrimental for the environment (petroleum). There are no negative externalities associated with entertainment. It must be considered at par with other goods and services and should be given a fair tax treatment.

Producer and Excel Entertainment co-founder Ritesh Sidhwani added, “Besides, levy of this tax at the local body level will neither be simple nor yield much revenue. India has a total of 640 districts, even if a small percentage of the local bodies seek to impose the tax, compliance and enforcement will be a nightmare.”

The EY report states that for local governments, the most suitable tax base is considered to be real property, which is immobile and can readily be identified within the boundaries of a given jurisdiction. Entertainment, being mobile and available in diverse forms, is not a suitable base for municipal/local taxation. The situs of entertainment is important for municipal/local bodies that collect tax if the source of entertainment is within the boundaries of their jurisdiction. With the advent of modern technology, movies and films can be watched not just in cinema halls or through cable or DTH connections, but also on computers, laptops and media players.

Entertainment signals could be beamed from a satellite and receivedanywhere within the footprint of the signals, which could be the whole of the country or the continent.

At any given time, it would be difficult to determine whether the film is being watched within the limits of the municipal or local body.

Dharma Productions’ Karan Johar said, “It will be almost impossible for the film producers to estimate the tax revenues with any precision. This appears to be against the government policy of facilitating ‘ease of doing business and ‘tax certainty’ in India.”

It is believed that even though the tax would be charged and collected from the theaters, film producers are impacted by it since the producers generally enter into revenue sharing arrangements with the theaters, which are based on revenues net of any taxes applied on the admissions. They would need to know the taxes applied by each of the local bodies to determine their share in the revenue pool.

Film and Television Producers Guild CEO Kulmeet Makkar added, “The Film Guild has on numerous occasions reached out to the Central Government, Empowered committee of State Finance Minister, Parliamentary Standing Committee. However, this has not been addressed in the bill.”

Sidharth Malhotra to travel time in his next film

MUMBAI: Karan Johar’s student of the year Sidharth Malhotra is already a hit among the ‘cinemagoers.’ After back to back hits like Hasee Toh Phasee and Ek Villain, the actor has become one of the most successful newcomers in the industry. As he prepares to take on Akshay Kumar in the boxing ring in Karan Malhotra’s Brothers, a remake of ‘Warriors’ and cloak himself as a vigilante superhero in Vikramaditya Motwane’s Bhavesh Joshi, Sidharth Malhotra has another interesting movie in his bag.

According to media reports, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani has roped in Sidharth Malhotra to act in their next film which will be co-produced by the actor’s mentor Karan Johar. The movie was initially offered to Aamir Khan but the actor and the studio failed to agree on the remuneration and other commercial clauses.

The yet untitled film is said to be a love story with a twist, about a time-traveller, with a romance which spans across timelines and will be directed by debutante Nitya Mehra.

He loved it so much that he said he would be happy to get involved in any capacity. Farhan and I have never co-produced before, Karan is our first partner.”
