    COLORS to pay musical tribute to Rishi Kapoor, Irrfan Khan

    MUMBAI: Last week turned out to be a dark one for the Indian cinema as two iconic actors, Rishi Kapoor and Irrfan Khan, left for the heavenly abode. Their passing left a void in the hearts of their fans and loved ones that cannot be filled. They both epitomized brilliant talent and acting styles while making us laugh, cry, and rejoice with their films. Saluting the greatest men of the industry, COLORS is set to air a special musical concert: Dard- e- Dil, A musical tribute to Rishi Kapoor and Irrfan Khan on Sunday, May 10, 2020 at 12 noon and 5 pm. It will have popular artists from the fraternity uniting to celebrate the lives and achievements of the superstars. 

    While the artists will perform from the confines of their home, they will come together in spirit to pay homage to the stalwarts. The concert will feature a bevy of celebrities including comedian Bharti Singh and Harsh Limbacchiya anchor Maniesh Paul, singers Sukhwinder Singh, Aditya Narayan, Abu Malik, television actors Hina Khan and Devoleena Bhattacharjee, Arjun Bijlani and Rising Star contestants. Taking a trip down the memory lane, the artists will share their nostalgia-filled eulogies along with performing soulful renditions of late Rishi Kapoor and Irrfan Khan’s including songs like Suit Suit Karda, Masoom from Madari, Teri Umeed Tera Intezaar, Om Shaanti Om etc.

    Manisha Sharma, chief content officer, Hindi mass entertainment, Viacom18, said: “We lost two of Bollywood’s gems Rishi Kapoor and Irrfan Khan last week who brightened up our lives and entertained us until their last breath.  Owing to the lockdown, the fans could not give a befitting farewell to their favorite stars and we wish to give them an opportunity through our special episode – A Tribute to the Legends. They left an everlasting impression on our minds with their films and songs and that’s how we wish to remember them – through art and music.”

    Kapoor & Sons full of good performances, but will World T20 mar its box office?

    MUMBAI: Kapoor& Sons is a family drama. One can slot it as a contemporary family drama extending to three generations. The title of the film does not quite convey the theme as it unfolds on the screen. It is about a dysfunctional family where just about everybody is at crossroads and has a reason to grudge the other, except the fun-loving patriarch, Rishi Kapoor. 

    Rishi Kapoor, an ex-army man, has settled in the picturesque hill station of Coonoor in the South with his elder son, Rajat Kapoor, and daughter in law, Ratna Pathak. On the verge of his 90th birthday, Rishi Kapoor wishes that his two grandsons, Fawad Khan and Sidharth Malhotra join him. While, Fawad is a successful writer based in London, Sidharth tends a bar in New Jersey while also aspiring to be a writer. This also sort of establishes that the two brothers are poles apart. 

    Fawad is Mr Proper and organized, Sidharth is a drifter who can’t stick to one task. He lives an uncharted life. Both plan to land in India at about the same time and head to Coonoor. Rishi Kapoor has this habit of faking his death. But, when the brothers reach, Rishi Kapoor is actually admitted into a hospital having suffered a heart attack. He is heavily made-up to look 90, and that takes some time accepting for a viewer. 

    As you go along, you see the difference in the way the brothers are treated, especially by Ratna and Rajat; Fawad gets most of the attention and priority in everything. Sidharth catches up with an old friend and, through him, meets Alia Bhatt. Alia is an orphan having lost both her parents in a plane crash. She is in Coonoor to deal with her family property. Fawad visits her property and meets Alia. Out on a dinner date with Fawad, Alia ends up kissing him. However, she spends most of her time with Sidharth and finds his company more comforting.

    Sidharth and Alia exchange notes and he tells her about how the manuscript of his book resembled Fawad’s bestseller. He is not ready to believe this was a coincidence. The gap widens between brothers when Alia confesses to kissing Fawad.

    In this family, the brothers are not the only ones at war. Rajat and Ratna are always at loggerheads too. Rajat’s business is in doldrums and he has added to the problems by getting involved with another woman. Everything comes together to spoil the 90th birthday celebrations of the patriarch. Kapoor may be 90 but his interest in women is intact and his pinup girl is Mandakini under a waterfall in film Ram Teri Ganga Maili. He relishes sweets, which he is barred from, porn films and an occasional puff of pot.

    When the skeletons start coming out of the closet, it creates rifts between brothers, mother and ends up costing the life of one. 

    Kapoor& Sons breezes through its first half, but the attempt to cram too much into the second half makes it heavy as well as jerky, as attention shifts from one character to another. There is a sort of happy ending as the family comes together once again on Kapoor’s request but it is not all that happy a moment as Kapoor has not only lost a family member, but also his verve and humour.

    The film gives the feeling of being stretched. Except for Kapoor’s earlier exploits, there is little to entertain. Besides, music too does not help. The romance is kind of there and not there. ShakunBatra’s direction is generally good as he tries to keep this a real life kind of narration. The dialogue is effective. Shot on lush Coonoor locations, visually the film is pleasing.

    Actually, this film is all about performances. While all the actors playing the main characters excel, Fawad gets the best part to play, which adds to his fan following. Rishi Kapoor, being the only one providing light moments, is very good. Sidharth, Alia, Rajat and Ratna too do well.
    Kapoor & Sons is a slow starter. Its appeal will be limited to a certain section of audience with single screen patrons ruled out. World T20 is bound to affect its prospects, especially during India Pakistan tie on 19th.

    Box office: ‘Phantom’ fails to impress

    MUMBAI: Kabir Khan’s Phantom, starring Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif, has opened with poor response. The first day figures hover around a little over Rs 8 crore. However, the film showed a reasonable jump on day two with collections growing by about 35 per cent this being a solo release with the advantage of Raksha Bandhan holiday. The word of mouth still remained against the film as the Sunday collections failed to match Saturday figures. The film collects Rs 33.2 crore in its opening weekend.

     

    Kaun Kitney Paani Mein fails to make its presence felt at the box office.

     

    Baankke Ki Crazy Baraat flops badly.

     

    All Is Well fails to entertain with Rishi Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan playing out a poor script and a patchy production. The film had a miserable opening and got worse as the week progresses to end its first week with collection figures of Rs 13.9 crore.

     

    Manji – The Mountain Man matches the appreciation it earned from the critics and turns it to its advantage at the box office. The film collects a handsome Rs 9.45 crore in its first week.

     

    Brothers shrinks to as much as 10 per cent of its first week collections in its second week. The film collects Rs 7.15 crore to take its two week total to Rs 76.7 crore.

     

    Drishyam keeps box office ticking, though on a smaller scale. The film adds Rs 3.45 crore in its fourth week to take its four week total to Rs 79.95 crore.

     

    Bajrangi Bhaijaan begins its countdown on its last rounds collecting Rs 1.3 crore in its sixth week. With this the film’s six week total stands at Rs 317.35 crore.

     

    Bahubali (Hindi-Dubbed) adds Rs 1.4 crore in its seventh week to take its seven week total to Rs 108.6 crore.

    MUMBAI: Experiential marketing division from Dentsu Aegis Network, psLIVE has facilitated a marketing tie-up of the tea brand Parivar with Umesh Shukla’s latest movie – All Is Well

     

    With Bollywood emerging as a marketing tool that can be strategically used by brands to talk to consumers, psLIVE assisted Sapat International to associate its tea brand Parivar with the movie as the positioning of both the brand and the film exhibit an extremely seamless fit.

     

    The promos from the All Is Well stable clearly suggest that the movie directly targets family consumption – a coherent purpose that Parivar also desires to achieve.

     

    As part of the tie-up, Sapat International created a co-branded television commercial with All Is Well in an attempt to capitalise on this psLIVE-helmed partnership.

    ‘All Is Well’: Not really

    MUMBAI: Some films one just goes to watch without expectations. 

    Same is the case with All Is Well despite being directed by Umesh Shukla, who earlier gave us OMG: Oh My God. This is because, if the script does not add up to much and the credits list actors who are not known to carry a film on their own shoulders, no director can work miracles. 

    The film promises to be at least a visual delight as it takes off in Bangkok but that is just a bait. It soon moves rock stock and barrel into the hinterlands of North India, probably Haryana or is it Punjab? Well, the language and the attires seem to be those of Punjabi / Sikh and so is the ambience. Soon, it stops mattering for, if the makers don’t know, how could we?

    Abhishek Bachchan is a writer and composer of music who has been trying to get a break to cut an album in Bangkok. May be, Bangkok is where new talent in Hindi music are launched!?! Tiku Talsania seems to be the man who holds a monopoly in launching new talent. However, he does not invest; an aspirant has to finance his own album. That is where Abhishek falls short for he has no money. 

    Back home, Abhishek has parents, mother Supriya Pathak and father Rishi Kapoor. This is one messed up family suffering from total lack of communication despite being a family of three. Rishi has inherited a bakery from his father, which has a customer base of around four people. He is badly off, has no ambitions and gives vent to his frustration on his son and wife thus estranging Abhishek, who he asks to leave. Abhishek’s passion is his guitar and his music, which Rishi dislikes. 

    Abhishek has to raise money so that Tiku can launch him and that is when he gets a communication from his father’s lawyer that Abhishek needs to come to India and sign an agreement to sell off the bakery premises since his grandfather left it in the joint name with his father. Abhishek wants nothing of it but his friend convinces him that this probably is the money he was looking for his album. 

    Abhishek also has an admirer in Asin who loves him and wants to marry him. She is in a hurry to convince Abhishek because her father has already found a suitor for her back home. Both are on their way to India and end up taking the same flight. They also end up using the same cab (clichés never went out of fashion). Asin is glued to Abhishek, at times by her own devise, at others, by the writer’s plotting. 

    When Abhishek reaches home, he learns that he has been really fooled into coming by a goon, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub, to whom Rishi owes a lot of money. The goon wants the bakery premises in lieu of his money. Soon, Abhishek also learns that there is not a single person in his town to whom Rishi does not owe money! The bickering between father and son resumes after a ten year break. Supriya has been conveniently put out of scene consigned as an Alzheimer affected patient, who is left to be a mute spectator to father and son’s verbal duals.

    Here on, the makers seem to decide to take it as it comes with no particular sequence of events as father and son play hide and seek with Mohammed and his bunch of buffoons who pass off as his toughies. In between the mess, they realise that they actually love and care for each other. For whatever corny reason, Rishi had divorced Supriya so Abhishek decides to get them married again. Abhishek has also paid up Mohamed’s dues by selling his songs to another singer against his principles and wishes. 

    That done; it is now Rishi and company’s turn to get Abhishek and Asin together. For convenience sake, Asin’s suitor has decided to marry her cousin. 

    All Is Well is a poorly conceived, half-baked script. Substance is at premium here. The director is totally at sea doing a patch up job giving the film a last century B grade feel and the set designs making it only worse. Even regional films or limited budget small films have more finesse. Editing could have been better. The film has various singers giving voice to Abhishek or his none lip-sync number, which sounds rather odd. The only hummable song is Baaton ko teri…composed by Himmesh Reshamiya (the film has four composers besides having borrowed a number from Anand Milind’s score from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak).

    Performances are generally bad. Even Rishi does not bother to act. Abhishek and Asin both suffer from poorly etched characters. Supriya manages to look blank forgetting to act; Alzheimer makes a patient forget things, you know. 

    Talking of expectations, All Is Well is a let-down even for one with no expectations.

    MUMBAI: The second season of Colors’ talk show – The Anupam Kher Show – Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai is all set to go on air from 2 August. Slotted to air every Sunday at 8 pm, the show is developed by Kher’s production house Actor Prepares Production.

      

    The conversations, this year, will focus on the importance of hard-work and self-belief in overcoming challenges to taste success and achieve accolades.

     

    The chat show will feature celebrities like Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Kajol, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Suresh Raina, Gulzar, Rishi Kapoor, Tabu, Manoj Bajpai, Irrfan Khan, Waheeda Rehman, Asha Parekh, Paresh Rawal, Boman Irani, Sania Mirza, and Sonu Nigam.

    Ranbir Kapoor officially launches Mumbai City Football Club

    MUMBAI: India’s metropolitan city Mumbai which is home to some of India’s greatest sporting talents has finally got its own football club for the upcoming Hero Indian Super League-Mumbai City Football Club.

     

    Team owners Ranbir Kapoor and Bimal Parekh along with IMG-Reliance chairperson Nita Ambani and yesteryear actor Rishi Kapoor unveiled the logo of the new team and spoke about the teams’ grassroots programme. Mumbai’s D.Y Patil Stadium has been declared as the team’s home stadium.

     

    Explaining the new blue and white designed logo for the team, Ranbir Kapoor, who is the co-owner of the Club said, “A resilient fortress surrounding the logo signifies the determined spirit of the city. The seven stars symbolise the islands that form Mumbai. The trains meanwhile stand for the pulsating, beating a staccato rhythm and the vast distance these trains connect. They are the lifeline of the city.”

     

    He further added, “I couldn’t have asked for a better franchise to co-own.  It is the city I have grown up in and the city I love. This team will celebrate our unwavering spirit and like the city, fulfill the dreams of players and football fans.”

     

    When questioned if he will just be a face for the team or an active participant, the self proclaimed Barcelona fan said that he had financially invested in the team and was very passionate about football since he was 10-11 years old.

     

    Chartered Accountant and co-owner Bimal Parekh while speaking to indiantelevision.com said that he will be looking after the financial and administration aspect of the team, while his other co-owner Kapoor, would help in developing and promoting the team. “Our roles are clear cut and well defined,” he added.

     

    Parekh promises that his team will play a possession based free flowing brand of football while being technically sound, fast and tactically aware.

     

    The team has already devised its plan to reach out to the young fans at the grassroots level. Said the team’s technical director Nishant Mehra, “We have roped in around 100 schools to be a part of the developmental programme where we plan to target the age group of six to 10 years.”

     

     Commenting on the grassroots activation, IMG-Reliance chairperson Nita Ambani said, “The real excitement for the Hero ISL is the Young Champs programme, through which we will reach out to a number of schools.”

     

     A lot of emphasis is being laid on the grassroots programme, as it is understood that each of the teams are contractually bound to shell out approximately Rs 2 crore annually as part of developing the game in their respective team areas.

    The Curious Minds study takes centre-stage at MTV youth forum

    MUMBAI: If there’s one thing MTV constantly endeavors to know is what makes its core audience – the youth – tick!

     

    Every year, the brand undertakes massive research to understand its target audience and the findings are presented at the annual MTV Youth Marketing Forum.

     

    This year, the highlight of the forum was ‘The Curious Minds’ study conducted by MTV India, which has thrown up some interesting insights into how youngsters today view life and the times in which they are living.

      

    As, part of ‘The Curious Minds’ study, MTV spoke to more than 11,000 people aged 13 to 25 years in over 40 Sec A & B cities across India. “Curious Minds is the largest insight study we have commissioned in terms of spread. We have brought in fresh new techniques to collect and analyze the data. What has emerged is that today, young people are using their curiosity to curate their lives. It was a great pleasure for me to share this with our business partners in order to build a strong connect with young people through cutting edge content. Think Young, Think MTV,” said MTV India executive vice president and business head Aditya Swamy.

     

    Elaborating on the findings of the study, he said: “We’re in the business of young people, not in the business of broadcast. We went to 40 towns, over a period of six months to form the Curious Minds. There were some very stark observations that we noticed viz., for today’s youth, ‘ignorance is not bliss, but blasphemy’. They staunchly believe that they are ‘one’ tribe, and operate accordingly. They want ‘kill boring!’ They feel that their parents are their collaborators and treat them as their partners in crime. 70 per cent of today’s youth, based on our research, feel that when in a relationship, one must nurture it and commit to it. Another interesting observation was that the youth in smaller towns like Meerut are more ambitious and hungry than the ones in bigger towns like Mumbai. The current generation is the largest selling group of youth.”

     

    Swamy said that the purpose for the research was to keep pace with the current audience. “For us, research is the most exciting part of our job. While on our research, we went to watch a movie in Meerut just to understand the difference in the youth’s response from Meerut to that of Mumbai. We started the research in October and ended it in March, and will be publishing the hard copy of the research in the next few months and it is available for pre-order at mtvplay.in,” he said.

     

    The recently concluded MTV Youth Marketing Forum brought together some of the best known marketers, trend hunters and thought leaders from across the globe to dissect the bold and ever-changing world of the youth. The day-long forum saw the best line-up of speakers including Irfan van Ewijk – founding member of ID&T; Steven Sos – regional sales director, Shazam Entertainment; Heather Smith – board chair, Rock The Vote; Christian Kurz – VP – Research, Insights and Reporting, Viacom International; and Shashi Tharoor, Union Minister for Human Resource Development and Member of Parliament.

     

    The interaction with Tharoor was moderated by funnyman Cyrus Broacha and had Tharoor saying that he had competed with Rishi Kapoor in a play while at Campion School, SoBo. Tharoor’s observations on today’s youth were rather interesting. He said youngsters today own the country, are worked up by important issues like the Jessica Lall murder case, the Jyoti Singh Delhi rape case and so on. They want the country to be free from the shackles of age-old ideas and opinions.

     

    Asked about the issues that needed to be addressed immediately, Tharoor said: “Firstly, corruption has to be dealt with immediately, followed by, secondly, the inefficiencies in society and finally, the citizens of this country need to have a profound sense of what it is being an Indian.” Predictably, he added that his favourite politician currently was Rahul Gandhi, and his least favourite was Narendra Modi.

Significantly, he launched the 10,000 hours Project, a project that inspires young people around the world to donate time and give something back. “Renovating playgrounds for disadvantaged kids or offering a smile and a helping hand in a retirement home. United by music, thousands of volunteers are joining our crew and becoming part of our family,” he said.

     

    While Smith of Rock the Vote, a non-partisan organization that supports non-endorsed candidates and encourages the youth to vote and make a difference, said that the best way to tempt the youth to go and vote was to make it relevant to them and encourage them to “demystify” the process and most importantly, encourage them to ask questions, demand answers.

     

    Interestingly, Rock the Vote has registered more than five million young people to vote and has become a trusted source of information for young people wanting to register and cast their vote.

     

    Kurz made an interesting observation during his speech. “Gen X feels that when the youth, separated by geography, can still manage to maintain long-distance relationships, why can’t foreign leaders get along with each other?!” he said.

    NEW DELHI: Ten personalities in the field of social awareness, music, literature and arts are to receive the annual Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Awards later this month.

     

    Bharat Ratna and legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar told during a press conference held at her residence in Prabhakunj in Mumbai that the 25th edition of the awards will be presented by her at a function on 24 April at Shanmukhananda Hall, Mumbai.

     

    While tabla player Zakir Hussain and classical vocalist Pandharinath Kolhapure (father of actress Padmini Kolhapure) will be given the Master Deenanath Paritoshik award for music, senior actor Rishi Kapoor and the versatile Marathi actor Shivaji Satam will get the Master Deenanath Mangeshkar (Vishesh Paritoshik) awards.

     

    The Master Dinanath Paritoshak will be given to two journalists Anant Dixit and Prakash Bal, while the Vagvilasini Paritoshik will go to litterateur Dr Anand Yadav.

     

    Dinesh Pedanekar and Mukta Barve will get the Mohan Wagh Puraskar for the Marathi drama ‘Chapa Kata.’

     

    Anna Hazare gets the Master Deenanath  Mangeshkar (Jeevan Gaurav) for social awareness and Miraj Vidyarthi Singh receives the Anadmayee Paritoshik foir social service.

     

    The awards will be organised by Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Smriti Prathishthan Trust, which celebrates the Memorial day of Master Deenanath Mangeshkar every year on 24 April where legendary actors, film makers, social activists, musicians, singers, dramatists, dramas and poets are felicitated for their respective outstanding contribution in their field by presenting them with the prestigious ‘Master Deenanath Award’ and a prize of Rs one lakh each. The founders of this trust are Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Bharati Hridyanath Mangeshkar and Shriram Narayan Gogate.

     

    This year the trust celebrates 25th anniversary of the awards, and so a two-day festival of award ceremony and concerts will be held as a tribute to the legendary theatre artiste of his times and father of the Mangeshkar’s Lata, Meena, Usha, Hridynath and Asha Bhosle.

     

     The award ceremony on 24 April, will be followed by a solo Tabla concert by legendary Tabla player-Ustad Zakir Hussain, while the next day will see Asha Bhosle in a live Concert with her musician brother Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
