IndiaWin Sports clarifies Mumbai Indians is not a bidder in ISL

MUMBAI: The curiosity around the Indian Super League football seems to be building with the organisers having received positive responses from many interested parties. It was in keeping with this that the deadline for submitting the bid documents had been extended by two days to 26 and 27 March.

While there has been much speculation around who all could be vying to own the eight city franchises; there have been rumours that IndiaWins Sports – owner of the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians – allegedly bid for the Mumbai team as it also happens to be a ‘League Partner’ for the city.

IndiaWin Sports released a press statement saying: “We have received several media queries over the last few days on whether we have bid for a franchise in the Indian Super League. Most of these queries are specific to the interest Mumbai Indians ‘must’ have in being a ‘League Partner’ for the city of Mumbai.”

“IndiaWin Sports, which owns the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, wishes to state that we have not bid for a franchise in the upcoming Indian Super League,” the statement added.

The Indian Super League certainly provides a promising opportunity for a sports brand to develop unique connect, brand extension and value creation. “However adhering to the highest standards of corporate governance and transparency, and in the larger interest of the sport, the management at IndiaWin Sports had taken a conscious decision not to participate in the bidding process,” the statement further said.

ISL aims to be India’s next major sports property. Having put in place the foundational structure, it is now at the homestretch identifying the ‘League Partners’ who will form the pillar of this professional league.

Eight committed team owners (to be known as League Partners) will be selected as per a sophisticated evaluated criteria encompassing financial and developmental parameters. The league aims to unlock the aspirational energy in the youth, build a stage for talents and teams to flourish, co-create a vibrant ecosystem, and make the sport a national mission by giving much – needed impetus to the game of football.

Some of the big names from the country’s corporate world, Bollywood biggies and present sports team owners have shown keen interest to be part of the tourney.

The league was to begin in January but had to be postponed owing to issues like scheduling and lack of a window.

The winning bids announcement will take place in the second week of April. Ernst & Young, the advisory firm, has been entrusted the responsibility of evaluating the bid documents.

  • The bids for Indian Super League heat up!

The bids for Indian Super League heat up!

MUMBAI: It’s been just three weeks since the Football Sports Development, a company owned by IMG-Reliance, and broadcaster Star India, invited bids for Indian Super League (ISL) football teams from Indian companies and things are heating up already.

“Between 3 March to 21 March 2014, League organisers have recorded about 30 ‘Invitation to Bid’ (ITB) document purchase. In terms of the numbers, this is by far the highest level of interest that any similar franchise-based sports property has garnered in India,” tournament organisers IMG-Reliance said in a statement.

The curiosity around the ISL football seems to be building with the organisers receiving positive response from about 30 interested parties, even as the deadline for submitting the bid documents has been extended by two days to 26 and 27 March.

The original dates for submission of bid documents were 24 and 25 March.

“The league organisers had requests coming in from a large number of prospective bidders to extend the deadline for submission of the bid. Based on these requests, IMG-Reliance, together with Star India and in consultation with advisory firm Ernst & Young, has decided to grant a one-time extension for bid submission by further two-days,” said a statement released by ISL promoters.

Some of the big names from the country’s corporate world, Bollywood biggies and present sports team owners have shown keen interest to be part of the tourney.

The league was to begin in January but had to be postponed owing to issues like scheduling and lack of a window.

The league is backed by the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the commercial partner of IMG-Reliance and is expected to attract an entire new generation of sports fans into the football grounds throughout the country. With names like former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke, former England forward Michael Owen and former Argentina striker Hernan Crespo associated with the league, it is certain to help expand the market for football in the country.

Bids have been invited for nine cities – Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Guwahati, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune. The top eight bids will win the right to own and operate football clubs and participate in the Indian Super League.

The ITB is available for a fee of Rs 5 lakh. The bid document has been picked up by actor Shah Rukh Khan, who recently announced that he would like to extend his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders, to other sports, especially football. Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly is also said to have picked up a bid document, and he would certainly want to bid for his city (Kolkata).

Others in the fray include actor and producer John Abraham, actor Ranbir Kapoor, Ronnie Screwvala, Rhiti Sports and JSW Sports. Salman Khan too is part of a Mumbai-based group which has picked up the bid documents for owning a team in the league.

It was also learnt that Rendezvous, group of builders who owned the former IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers, too have picked up the bid documents and is one of the 30 parties who have shown interest in the league.

“The mandate for winning a city team in the Indian Super League had a novelty factor wherein it’s not only based on the highest financial bid, but also on the bidders’ proposal of a sound plan for developing football in the catchment area they wish to bid,” said the statement.

This plan would also form a part of the agreement that each franchise would sign with the League, and would be expected to adhere to it. It also involves a robust business proposal and a committed five-year grassroot/community development plan (spending Rs 2 crore every year) starting with a million in-school kids engagement plan, age group specific training, youth team and leading to having a full-time football academy.

The delay in submitting bids was due to the “demanding documentation.”

The winning bids announcement will take place in the second week of April. Ernst & Young, the advisory firm, has been entrusted the responsibility of evaluating the bid documents.

The new bid submission process will start from today and will now be open till 5:00 pm of 27 March instead of the earlier-announced date of 25 March. The winning bids will now be announced in the second week of April.

The base price for bidding for a franchise is Rs 12 crore per year for a tenure of 10 years. The football league, fashioned after the cash-rich IPL twenty-twenty tournament, will have eight teams in its inaugural year.

  • India and the Cannes Film Fest

India and the Cannes Film Fest

MUMBAI: Eight months down the line, and there’s nostalgia and a longing to be in Cannes again. The Cannes Film Festival had this habit of growing on you. The high cost of living (hotel and apartment rates in Cannes rise four to six times offseason rates during the fest), and the punishing schedules for the press conferences and for the screenings notwithstanding. (Bed time is 2:30 am, awakening time is 7:00 am as the first screening is at 8:30 am and it’s a 20 minute walk from one’s apartment to the Palais des Festivals’ Grand Auditorium).

2007 is the 60th year of the Cannes Fest, the 60th year of India’s indedpendence and a great deal of gigs are planned highlighting the world’s second or is it most attractive economy.

Hopefully, the volume of noise will be higher this year because India’s efforts get lost in the cacophony that is the mark of the festival. The American studios, the UK independents, the Chinese film makers, Latin American and European directors attract so much of the limelight, that India’s efforts simple don’t make much of an impact. Of course, the Indian media will send back reports saying how well India is doing at Cannes, when the truth is far from that.

Hopefully, the Indian pavilion along the Croisette will be better organized this time around. The CII – which puts the Indian participation together – needs to be patted for the initiative, but a little more organization on the ground, will mean so much for the industry. Obviously, it is learning from its experiences and this year it promises that it will be an eyepopping experience for all.

The Indian independent film makers group – which had got the support of the Reliance group’s Adlabs in the form of a pavilion – apparently is going to be back. In a much bigger way, says film maker Aditya Bhattacharrya. “It’s become a movement globally, Almost any independent Indian outside of India who is making movies has become a part of it,” he says. “It’s good for the movie business.”

The nostalgia that wells up is that of Tom Hanks charming one and all even as the da Vici Code got blasted as a disaster by all,Jon Voigt mumbling in an undecipherable language,. the gorgeous Maria Belluci, the maverick outlook of Wong kar Wai, the applause that Babel, Volver, Pan’s Labrynth, received, among many other classy movies which were presented at the festival.

From the Indian perspective there is the victory of animatrix Gitanjali Rao who won a couple of awards being the sole Indian flag bearer. She in her way charmed one and all by her grace and dignity at the film mart. Then there was this group of French girls who came up to this writer pleading to meet with Karan Johar and Shah rukh Khan. The former was there they were told, the latter would not be coming. But did they meet him? Then there was the Omkara book launch, the Jagmohan Mundra’s Provoked, WEG India’s Avinash Jumaani’s lavish party near the old port, Sunil Doshi’s screening of Mixed Doubles in the Palais, the Film Producer Guild party which had more Indians than the overseas trade which is what it was meant to attract.

In its 60th year, India’s entertainment barons have an opportunity to set things right. And leave no stone unturned while attempting to do it.
