    Don 2 to release in UK on 21 Dec

    MUMBAI: Reliance Entertainment will release Excel Entertainment‘s Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Don 2 across the UK on 21 December, two days before its India release on 23 December.

    The film will not only be released before anywhere else, it will also be presented in the 3D format.

    Reliance Entertainment UK head Prakash Bakrania said, “We‘re very pleased with the way Don 2 is shaping up and believe in its potential to deliver what the audience expects from this much awaited sequel.

    “With Farhan Akhtar directing and Shah Rukh Khan leading the huge ensemble cast, the cherry on this cake is the 3D version which we‘re also releasing. We‘ve kept in mind the festive Christmas mood, the holidays and Shah Rukh Khan‘s huge UK fan base as we gear up to open the film here from Wednesday 21st Dec 2011.”

    The second sequel to the 1978-made original, directed by Farhan Akhtar, stars Shah Rukh Khan along with Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, Boman Irani and Kunal Kapoor among others.

    Telugu remake of Johnny Gaddar in offing

    MUMBAI: Remember the 2007 made Neil Nitin Mukesh debut film Johnny Gaddar. The film, not only got mixed reviews but got back the thriller genre back to Bollywood.

    The film, now to be made in Telugu, will be produced by Kubera Cinemas and directed by Lakshmikanth Chenna.

    Newcomer Krishi Arimanda will play Neil‘s role, while other actors include Sai Kumar and Gracy Singh.

    “Keeping new trends in cinema in mind I chose a subject that would attract the present generation and not just make a regular movie with three fights. So, we bought the official rights of Johnny Gaddaar from Reliance Entertainment.” Deepak Baldev of Kubera Films said in statement.

    Johnny Gaddar, directed by Sriram Raghavan, was a crime thriller depicting the story of a group of five men involved in gambling and other illegal businesses.

    The shoot of this untitled remake is already under way.

    Reliance Ent integrates home video and Zapak Games

    MUMBAI: In order to maximise its group synergies, Reliance Entertainment has integrated the toys and games business under Zapak Games with Reliance Home Video.

    Reliance Entertainment has produced films like Bodyguard, Singham and Double Dhamaal.

    The new entity, known as Reliance Home Video and Games, will ensure growth of both home video and games business with enhanced funding, improved infrastructure and larger product offerings, the company said.

    Speaking on the merger Reliance Home Video and Games COO Sweta Agnihotri said, “The broad market dynamics for Home Video and Games are similar in terms of consumer demographics, marketing and distribution of products. The consumer demands a more gratifying experience. They want their entertainment to be participative, immersive and experiential. The addition of games and toys to our existing home video business adds one more dimension to this enhanced consumer fulfillment. 

    “With favourable sector dynamics, the Indian toy market is seeing a paradigm shift; there is a growing preference for international brands and the Indian market is being propelled by a larger kid‘s population, rising disposable incomes and aspirational lifestyles. Gaming is another rapidly growing segment which we are excited to be in. We will of course continue to dominate the home video business by bringing the finest films in home entertainment from across the world. We believe that Reliance Home Video and Games will be a long term player with incredible brand equity, experienced teams and investment capabilities which will be beneficial to all concerned.”

    Reliance Home Video distributes both Indian and Hollywood products. It is an exclusive licensee to Warner Bros, Paramount Studios, Universal Studios and Dreamworks for all their new and catalogue films and has released blockbusters such as 3Idiots, Bodyguard, Dabangg, Harry Potter series, Transformers series, Fast and Furious franchise among others on home video.

    Zapak Games, meanwhile, has grown in the toy and games segment over the past four years and distributes merchandise, games and toys from leading international toys and gaming companies like Moose, Spinmasters, Codemasters, Jakks Pacific and Crayola.

    Reliance said that the new entity would benefit all stake holders with presence in toys, games and home video all under one roof and make their network the most versatile and influential network in the personal leisure and entertainment space in India.

    Mumbai film festival opens to a grand start

    MUMBAI: The 13th Mumbai Film Festival opened yesterday to a grand response, with Bennett Miller’s Moneyball starring Brad Pitt kicking off the event.

    The film was screened on all the screens of Cinemax, Versova, the festival’s main venue.

    Opening the festival, director- producer Yash Chopra lit the lamp along with actress Dia Mirza with President of Film & TV Producers Guild Ramesh Sippy and trustee of MAMI Amit Khanna in tow. Joining them were the International Competition jury members Hugh Hudson (jury president), Jerzy Skolimowski, Na Hong- Jin, Roger Spottiswoode and Sarika.

    Commenting on the occasion, 13th Mumbai Film Festival Festival Director Srinivasan Narayanan said, “The 13th Mumbai Film Festival has certainly begun with a tremendous turnout. We sincerely hope that all those attending will see the effort put behind organizing this popular festival and hope that this year’s selection of films satisfies their appetite of quality cinema.”

    The festival is a Reliance Entertainment initiative, organised by Mumbai Academy of Moving Image.

    Reliance Entertainment to release Shakal Pe Mat Ja

    MUMBAI: Reliance Entertainment has acquired the distribution rights of Linc Entertainment‘s debut production, Shakal Pe Mat Ja (SPMJ).

    The film was initially scheduled to release on 9 September but was postponed for a 23 September release. But just before the shoot could be wrapped up at the Delhi airport, the permission was withdrawn because of security reasons. Resultantly, the release date was again pushed back.

    The film will now release on 4 November.

    SPMJ is the story of four young boys who get caught as suspects at the Delhi international airport on the first anniversary of the British Subway attacks, while capturing a British Airways aircraft landing on their camera, which they claim to be a shot for a documentary that they are making. And there begins the journey of what becomes the hold up.

    Directed by Shubh, SPMJ stars Saurabh Shukla, Raghubir Yadav, Aamna Sharif, Umang Jain, Chitrak, Pratik, Harsh and the director himself.

    Mumbai film festival announces lineup

    MUMBAI: The 13th Mumbai Film Festival, a Reliance entertainment initiative, has announced the lineup of about 200 films that would be screened under various sections films.

    Scheduled to be held from 13 to 20 October, the 13th Mumbai Film Festival aims to showcase the truly global cinema. While Cinemax Versova would be the main hub of the festival, screenings would be held at Metro Big Cinemas and Cinemax Sion.

    While the Brad Pitt starrer Moneyball will be the opening film of the festival, the Morgan Freeman starrer Dolphin Tale will close the festival. Among the films that will have their India premieres would be Melancholia directed by Lars Von Tier, The Whistle Blower, George Clooney‘s The Ides of March and Wim Wenders-directed Pina.

    Announcing the lineup of films, Benegal said: “A feast of films awaits you at the 13th Mumbai Film Festival. We are extremely proud of the fact that Mumbai Film Festival is fast getting recognised to be the best international film festival in this country.”

    Other films will compete for $200,000 under the three competition sections – ‘International Competition for the first feature films of directors‘; ‘Dimensions Mumbai‘; and ‘Harmony Celebrate Age‘.

    Averred Mumbai film festival director Srinivasan Naryanan, “This year the selection committee had its task cut out for them. They had to choose from over 800 films to finally zero down on such a closely competitive lineup.”

    The festival will pay tribute to Shammi Kapoor, M.F.Hussain and Mani Kaul with special screenings of their works. Additionally, a film retrospective of Jury President, Hugh Hudson‘s works including Revolution Revisited and I Dreamed of Africa would be screened.

    Noted poet, lyricist, script writer and director, Gulzar will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

    Bodyguard becomes first Bollywood film to collect Rs 1 bn in 1st week

    MUMBAI: Salman Khan’s Bodyguard has made the fastest run to the Rs 1 billion milestone in India’s box office history. The movie collected Rs 1.05 billion in its first week, bettering performances from other super hits like 3 Idiots and Dabaang.

    “The historic performance at the box office has been helped by the mass following of Salman Khan, the good pairing of Khan and Kareena Kapoor and the extended weekend,” Reliance Entertainment CEO Sanjeev Lamba told Indiantelevision.com.

    Reliance Entertainment carried out an aggressive campaign and chalked out a wide release of the film. “This is also the first film of Salman Khan that has got a bumper opening in the US and is doing exceedingly well in the UK, Australia and New Zealand,” added Lamba.

    In the overseas circuit, the film has grossed ?840,000 from UK and $1,051,132 from US during the extended weekend.

    Meanwhile, another film in which Reliance Entertainment is involved is doing well. The Ajay Devgn-starrer Singham has mopped up Rs 1 billion in its sixth week. The film grossed Rs 510 million in its first week.

    Said Lamba, “A hard-hitting story, the wonderful combination of director Rohit Shetty and star Ajay Devgn and some amazing action sequences have resulted in an extremely successful run for the film. Singham is the first mainstream film produced by Reliance Entertainment and we are very pleased with the results.”

    MUMBAI: Salman Khan‘s Bodyguard has made the most of Eid-day release with the Ganeshotsav holiday following a day later. The movie collected Rs 411 million in these two days itself.

    The collections softened somewhat on Friday and Saturday to peak again on Sunday to end its five-day weekend with a whopping Rs 889.5 million.

    Made on a production budget of Rs 620 million, the print and promotion cost would peg the total cost of the movie at over Rs 800 million. The smart release strategy has, undoubtedly had a role to play in keeping Reliance Entertainment‘s recent good run going with a worthy grosser in the wake of Singham.

    While Bodyguard may have limited repeat value and show a decline at multiplexes, its collections at single screen are still holding on.

    With its impressive opening overseas and an assured following on satellite and video market, Bodyguard is sure to prove an earner if not a goldmine!

    Shabri with Rs 2.64 million, Yeh Dooriyan with Rs 2.72 million and Chitkabrey with Rs 1.62 million in their first-week run prove poor contenders.

    Aarakshan collected Rs 43 million in its third week to take its total to Rs 372 million.

    Singham, having come to an end of its successful run, added Rs 11 million in its fifth week to take its tally to Rs 999.5 million.

    Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara collected Rs 11 million in its seventh week to take its total up to rs 866 million.

    Murder2 mopped up Rs 489.5 million at the end of eight weeks.

    Reliance Entertainment gets protection order against piracy for Bodyguard

    MUMBAI: Reliance Entertainment has procured a ‘John Doe Order‘ order from the Delhi High Court to prevent the illegal broadcast or
    streaming of its upcoming film Bodyguard, starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

    The company said that it has procured the order from the Court that would restrain websites, cable operators and Internet service
    providers (ISPs) and others from infringing or violating its copyright by illegally showing the film.

    “The order is a measure to prevent piracy of Bodyguard. With this, we expect piracy levels for the film to come down by 60 per cent,” said Reliance Entertainment vice-president of music and anti-piracy Sanjay Tandon.

    This John Doe Order gives protection to the intellectual property owner, Reliance Entertainment, from copyright violation by prospective anonymous offenders. Tamdon said that the company has already sent out about 2,000 intimation notices to cable operators, websites within and outside India and ISPs.

    Earlier, the company had procured a similar court order for Singham. “We were able to bring down piracy by 40 per cent. The company had served the John Doe Order to about 30 people for Singham,” Tandon remarked.

    “For Bodyguard, the company has readied a team that will conduct raids to identify those infringing on the copyright. At Reliance
    Entertainment, we have created a separate department to fight piracy,” he added.

    Presented by Reliance Entertainment, Bodyguard, a Reel Life Production, releases across 2500 screens on 31August.

    Reliance Entertainment to release I Me Aur Main

    MUMBAI: Reliance Entertainment has bought the distribution rights of the John Abraham starrer, I Me Aur Main.


    I Me aur Main, produced by Shrishti Behl Arya and Goldie Behl under the banner of Rose Movies, marks the directorial debut of Kapil Sharma, son of noted astronaut Rakesh Sharma.


    The film is scheduled to hit the screens early next year.
     
    I Me Aur Main has been made in an urban setting and has something for everyone, comments Goldie Behl.


    The film also stars Chitrangada Singh, Prachi Desai and Zareena Wahab.
