Reliance Entertainment infuses $200 mn in DreamWorks

MUMBAI: Indian billionaire Anil Ambani’s dream of conquering Hollywood continues unabated even after a slate of releases from the joint venture with Steven Spielberg‘s DreamWorks Studios failed to impress the box office.

Ambani-promoted Reliance Entertainment has agreed to infuse fresh funding of $200 million in a new deal that calls for a slimmer DreamWorks. The ambitious six movies a year announced in 2009 has been scaled back to three to five starting next year.

The new arrangement, providing a lifeline to the studio, comes after a series of negotiations that began late last year as the global economic crisis hit DreamWorks had. The studio had slashed its spending on development and production.

When contacted, a Reliance Entertainment spokesperson declined to comment.

In 2009, DreamWorks had raised $325 million from Reliance Entertainment for a stake. It had got another $325 million in debt.

The releases of the science-fiction ‘I Am Number Four‘ and the big-budget ‘Cowboys & Aliens‘ bombed. Though Academy Award nominee ‘The Help’ was a hit, but the remake of ‘Fright Night‘ didn’t succeed. ‘Real Steel’ and Spielberg‘s own ‘War Horse‘ put up moderate performances.

Salim, Javed to fight for creative copyright rights of Zanjeer

MUMBAI: After the late Prakash Mehra’s son Amit Mehra announced the making of his father’s 1973 classic Zanjeer, scriptwriters Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar have jointly decided to initiate proceedings against him saying that this was a case of creative and copyright infringement.

Akhtar has complained that the producers haven‘t consulted them before going ahead with the remake plans of the film. He has also said that for any change in the original screenplay, the consent of the writer must be taken.

“I think there is a moral issue involved in the debate that goes beyond legal issues. Perhaps the people who are thinking of remaking Zanjeer have paid for the rights to do so. But creative rights are not like buying property. Salim Saab and I wrote Zanjeer. It is our moral right to be informed about any plans to use our creative resources,” averred Akhtar. “I’ll be taking a very firm legal stand on this to find out what their position is on copyright correctness.”

Meanwhile, Mehra has said that he can never think of remaking Zanjeer without the blessings of the scriptwriters. “They’re a family to me. After dad passed away, they’ve been like my guardians. Their contribution to most of my dad’s films, particularly Zanjeer can’t be undermined,” he said.

Since the film is still at a nascent stage, he didn’t meet the writers, but he would meet them and seek their blessings once everything is confirmed.

The remake, directed by Apoorva Lakhia, is being jointly produced by Reliance Entertainment, Adai Mehra Productions Private Limited and Flying Turtle Films. The film is to be presented by Reliance Entertainment.

Film Distributors’ associations to appeal in SC against CCI ruling

MUMBAI: Seven distributor associations across India who were, in an order of the Competition Commission Of India (CCI), told to pay a penalty of 10 per cent of their annual income against following alleged unfair laws, have decided to file an appeal in the Supreme Court against the ruling.

It was last Saturday when the CCI gave its judgement asking these associations to co-operate with production houses like Reliance Entertainment, UTV Motion Pictures, Eros International and Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision.

Besides, it has also ordered that associations can no longer compel anyone to become their member as a pre-condition for the exhibition of the film in territories under their control and can‘t discriminate between regional and non-regional movies with an undertaking that they won‘t restrict the number of screens for any film.

The associations are the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), Central Circuit Cine Association (CCCA), Bihar and Jharkhand Motion Pictures Association (BJMPA), and two others.

As a fall out of the order, other distributor associations that would be affected are Eastern India Motion Picture Association (EIMPA), Hyderabad State Film Chamber of Commerce, Northern India Motion Pictures Association, Indian Motion Pictures Distributors Association, Orissa Film Distributors Syndicate and The Chennai Kanchipuram Thiruvallur District Films Distributors Association.

The legal dispute started after Rakesh Roshan‘s Kites, distributed by Reliance, was not allowed to play in 50-60 screens due to a KFCC diktat. • ‘Hugo’, ‘The Artist’ top Oscar nominations

‘Hugo’, ‘The Artist’ top Oscar nominations

MUMBAI: Martin Scorcese‘ 3D family film ‘Hugo‘ has got 11 Oscar nominations while the silent black and white film ‘The Artist‘ got 10 nominations for the 84th annual Oscar Awards, making it a clear two- horse race.

The show will air on Star Movies on 27 February.

‘The Artist‘ is the first black and white film to get a best picture nomination since ‘Good Night and Good Luck‘ in 2005. ‘Hugo is the fourth film released in 3D to score a best picture nomination, after ‘Avatar‘, ‘Up‘ and ‘Toy Story 3‘. If it is able to stop ‘The Artist‘s momentum, then it would be the first 3D film to win best picture.

This year nine films have been nominated for best picture the most surprising being ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close‘. Another surprise was ‘The Tree Of Life‘ which among other things got nominated for picture and director Terrance Mallick despite having been previously ignored during the Oscar season.

‘War Horse‘ from Dreamworks and Reliance Entertainment got six nominations including best picture.Spielberg has been left off the director‘s list. However Kathleen Kennedy and Steven Spielberg now have the record for most best picture nominations for a producer with seven, passing Stanley Kramer.

‘The Descendants‘, which was earlier considered one of the front runners, only got five nominations making it virtually impossible for it to win Best Picture. However George Clooney is the favourite to win best actor for his role as a father trying to cope with grief over the fact that his wife is in a coma.

Clooney‘s competition includes Gary Oldman who finally scored his first Oscar nomination for ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy‘, Surprisingly Leonardo DiCaprio has been left in the cold for his turn as former FBI director J Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood‘s ‘J. Edgar‘.

In best actress, it is a two-way fight between Meryl Streep playing Margaret Thatcher in ‘The Iron Lady‘ and Viola Davis for ‘The Help‘. ‘The Help‘ is another best picture nominee and means that Dreamworks is the only studio to have two films competing for best film.

Like ‘War Horse‘, ‘Moneyball‘ has also got six nominations including for best picture and for its stars Brad Pitt and Jonah hill. It is a serious threat for adapted screenplay.

Woody Allen‘s ‘Midnight In Paris‘ scored four nominations including two for Allen for directing and writing. It has been over two decades since Allen last won an Oscar. He could win for original screenplay unless ‘The Artist‘ does a sweep.

John Williams got two nominations for his scores for the two Spielberg films ‘War Horse‘ and ‘The Adventures of Tintin‘. He has now been nominated 47 times. Allen has now been nominated 23 times. Interestingly while ‘Hugo‘, ‘Midnight in Paris‘, ‘The Tree of Life‘ and ‘War Horse‘ got best picture nominations they did not get any acting nominations. Apart from Dicaprio other surprising omissions include ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo‘, ‘Drive‘, which are not on the best picture list.
