Nice terror attack, Cannes and the Palais des Festivals

The date: 14 July. The location: The Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai’s Colaba area. French consul general Yves Perrin plays host to businessmen, politicians, artistes, entertainment professionals, journalists like he does every year on Bastille Day to celebrate France’s National Day. Wine, champagne, and a mouth watering menu of French cuisine is rustled up by the Taj’s chefs and served to those who have a linkage with France. That’s of course after the customary playing of the French national anthem and the speech by the honorary counsel general. The evening proceeds well and late into the night as guests mingle and enjoy each other’s company.

Some 4,000-odd miles away in the picturesque city of Nice in the south of France, the entire Palais des Anglais is choc-a-bloc with general members of the public. The mood is celebratory. The bright summer sky, and the azure blue sea, are what the French Riviera town is known and has drawn tens of thousands of tourists during the holiday period.

The local Nice government has planned an evening of fireworks and music to celebrate France’s National Day. Tourists and locals have been looking forward to an evening of revelry and gaiety. The main street is cordoned off courtesy the roadblocks that have been erected. Young couples with their children in prams, some with their elderly parents, kids with their parents, groups of young are lounging about, walking around relaxed.

Suddenly, a white truck comes down the crowded road, swaying from side to side, driven at 40-50 miles per hour in a zig-zag motion and bodies start to fly. A scramble starts as word gets around further down the Promenade that a killer is on the loose. In the meanwhile, scores are hit by the white truck; some die on the spot; some are critically injured.

In a matter of a few more minutes, the police shoot and kill the driver of the truck. Before that, however, the manic truck has inflicted maximum damage. On the street lie mangled, broken, twisted bodies, bleeding.

Celebration has turned to shock. 84 people die, 10 children, and many more are hospitalized, critically injured.

The horror of that attack spreads across the world. A must-visit tourist destination, Nice has been relatively safe for years and is the gateway to Cannes, which houses the Palais des Festivals. A majority of the world’s biggest and most famous exhibitions and festivals are held in the building– the Lions, the Film Festival, Mipcom, MipTV, Midem, Toys, Mipim and many others. Nice airport is where everybody lands and takes a cab or a bus to Cannes.

About 300 film professionals from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh attend the Cannes Film Festival, another 100-odd ad & marketing executives the Cannes Lions, and about 400 attend the TV and music markets – Mipcom, Mip TV and Midem every year.

Cannes is where Indian broadcast, film, animation, production and music executives go to do business, buying and selling content, signing co-production and syndication deals. And have been doing so for many years.

Should they continue visiting it now? Is it safe enough?

Indeed, it is as safe as Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Hotel where France’s National Day celebrations were held on the same ill-fated evening. One can’t forget that a few years ago, the Taj Mahal Hotel itself was the target of a terrorist attack which left hundreds dead. Did we stop visiting the Taj Mahal Hotel?

Visitors to Cannes and its exhibitions can be assured that France is going to step up its security to maximum. An additional 10,000 soldiers have been deployed on its streets. A state of emergency has been extended by another three months. Border controls are being strengthened. Because Nice has been hit, it is going to get heightened security attention. Ditto with Cannes .

Expect visa formalities for those wanting to visit Schengen nations to get stricter (so please apply for your visas early; don’t make last minute applications). Expect airport security to be more vigilant. Already for the past six months visitors to Nice have had to go through an additional immigration check at the airport even if they have made their entry into Europe from another country.

Additionally, even the administrators of the towns of Nice and Cannes are going to take strong security measures to build confidence and really keep visitors safe. One has to only go back to the measures that the Palais des Festivals took after the 911 attacks, with body scans and X-ray machines. Queues used to be pretty long then.

Reed Midem is also going put its best behind making Mipcom –which is the next big event slated to take place from 15-20 October in Cannes – safer for attendees. And it has been known take extreme measures to support its clients. Like refunding money to clients who were afflicted by the floods during the festival last year. Like contributing to the Cannes city to help it in its rehabilitation.

Most agree that the only way to keep at bay those who want to damage nations and their people is to stay resolute and continue to do business as usual. Let us translate that into action.

MIPTV 2016: Deal making, the Goenka brothers and the Indian presence

Cannes: A 100 plus strong delegation has been making its presence felt at Reed Midem’s MIPTV 2016 in this picturesque small town of Cannes on the French Riviera. Thankfully the weather has held up and the skies have been clear on most days, excepting for one when it drizzled steadily throughout. Touts on the streets made a killing selling umbrellas. On other days, a nip in the air  forced everyone to bring out their cardigans and overcoats.

But on Day 3 of the 50 plus year old market cum festival, the sun came out in all its glory with the temperature climbing up and television executives feeling its full blaze even as the deal making and the conferences and debates hotted up.

MipTV, the festival-cum-market has attracted upwards of 10,500 participants, at a time when Europe has been grappling  with warning signs about it being a no-visit zone courtesy the terrorist attacks.

For the Indians, the highlight of MipTV is the honouring of the two Goenka brothers – Punit and Amit Goenka (the scions of media entrepreneur Subhash Chandra) – with the Medialle des Honneurs on 6 April. Punit, who was supposed to come, could not make it on account of a family emergency, but Amit did.  This is the first time an Indian is being honoured as such by the French company Reed Midem.

Additionally, the other high points have been an India format session moderated by Indiantelevision.com founder Anil Wanvari, and a session on 4K in which TravelXP CEO Prashant Chothani participated. Other panelists on the India session included: Ajay Nair (OML), Rahul Sangari (Grey Matter), GoQuest Media (Vivek Lath), and Yogesh Karikurve (ZeeTV).

Indian companies such as Zee TV, Star India, GoQuest, Vedic Broadcasting, DQ Entertainment, Cosmos Maya, Eros Worldwide, Indiantelevision.com, Indiacast, Green Gold Animation, Rajshri Entertainment, are among those companies which have come on as exhibitors.

Film producer Prasad Devineni who bankrolled the  Indian multilingual blockbuster film Bahubali and who also churns out many a TV show in the Telugu market made it to MIPTV to explore new avenues for his company Arka Media Works.

Cosmos Maya CEO Anish Mehta was cock-a-hoop with delight about the deals his company had managed to sign on at MipTV.

MIPTV also had some grand moments  like the premier  for Roots and The Story of God (Morgan Freeman), Morgan Spurlock’s keynote, the launch of MipDrama Screenings, the keynotes by author and writer Harlan Coben, Vivendi Content & Havas Media CEO Domiqnique Delport, RTL co-CEO Gullaume de Posch, Mattel COO & President Richard Dickson and Wildness chief strategy officer Margaret Czeisler.

At the time of writing all eyes were turned towards the Medaille D’Honneur ceremony which was slated to be held late on the evening of 6 April.  Amit is expected to receive the award for himself and his brother in front of an audience consisting of leading global TV executives.

In addition to Punit Goenka and Amit Goenka, three other distinguished TV industry leaders will receive Médaille d’Honneur in Cannes including:   Germany’s Studiocanal TV MD Rola Bauer,  Disney Media Networks global distribution president Ben Pyne from the US  and Mexico’s Comarex president Marcel Vinay.

We reached out to Anil to  get his  views, insights  on  what the bestowing of the Medailles d’  Honneur on Zee TV’s Punit and Amit Goenka means for the group    and also for the nation as a whole.

     Excerpts:

Why are  Zee Entertainment Enterprises'  Punit  and Amit Goenka being recognised with the Médailles d’Honneur at MipTV this year?

Zee TV has consistently been a pioneer in pushing Make In India globally even before Make In India was thought of. Their presence in so many countries is a testimony of the Zee TV group’s global vision. They have operations in Indonesia, West Asia, Russia, Singapore, UK and many more countries.  The Zee TV group is the largest Indian television content exporter in terms of program syndication as well. They are the most international Indian media company.

A couple of years ago, the Zee TV group had announced ambitious plans to drastically hike up the contribution of its international business to its top line. The group's vision is to have revenues from outside India to almost equal the business from the country. What this means it will have scale up its international operations and also increase its geographical spread. Last year, it  announced its  intention to  build beachheads in several mature television markets internationally as well. Punit and Dr Subhash Chandra brought in the talented Amit Goenka to head that international push. An announcement to launch a channel in Germany was made in mid-January this year. Other new market forays into are planned.

Puneet is the first Indian media CEO to speak during MIPCOM at the Cannes Palais des Festivals' Grand Auditorium –   a space normally reserved for executives from more mature markets like the US and Europe.

ZeeTV is the biggest exhibitor at MIPCOM and MIPTV and has been consistently increasing its commitment and investment in building its international business. The Medailles d’ Honneur is just a recognition of Zee’s vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – The World Is My Family’.

I am delighted that Reed Midem has decided to recognize Punit and Amit. I believe this is the first of many more such recognitions and rewards which will be bestowed on executives form the vibrant Indian entertainment economy.

Why is exporting Indian TV and film content so important?

What the US has done effectively is build its soft power, lifestyle   and culture through Hollywood films and TV shows. Corporations have benefited immensely from this as they have sold burgers, jeans, colas, cars and what have you through the imagery that has been built through movies and TV shows making these products desirable for consumers globally. Both corporate America and Hollywood have built a symbiotic relationship which has benefited the US economy as a whole.

India is on the cusp of change. We have a government which has the determination to deliver on the promise of the  country meeting its destiny as a global superpower. It could aid this vision by using the same soft power approach. It needs to push its products globally by integrating them in its films and TV shows globally and building brand India. I would like to see a vada pav become as desirable and part of people’s diets overseas as is the burger or the pizza.

Yes, our quality of production and of storytelling could scale up even further, but  Indian TV shows and films are already beginning to strike an even further chord with international audiences. This bodes well for the Indian content creation and syndication  industry. As well as the economy as a whole.

  • Sky’s Jeremy Darroch to give keynote at MIPTV

Sky’s Jeremy Darroch to give keynote at MIPTV

MUMBAI: Sky group CEP Jeremy Darroch will give a media mastermind keynote on 13 April, 2015, as part of the MIPTV conference programme, it was announced by Reed MIDEM, organiser of MIPTV.

Darroch became the group chief executive of Sky following the acquisition of Sky Italia and a majority interest in Sky Deutschland, which transformed the pay TV and home communications company into one of Europe’s leading investors in content.

The MIPTV keynote will be the first time Darroch will address the international media industry since completing the transaction. This year, the theme for MIPTV conference is “The Millennial Shift,” tapping into the heart of this savvy generation of media users whose habits are shifting to newer forms of entertainment.

In three strands of conferences, MIP Digital Fronts, Drama at MIPTV and Junior@MIPTV, this year’s programme will offer the global media industry unprecedented access to the hottest entertainment trends, companies, personalities and emerging media players on the cutting edge when it comes to engaging and embracing millennials.

Darroch joined Sky in 2004 as CFO, and was appointed chief executive of the company in 2007. Under his leadership, Sky has grown into Europe’s leading entertainment company, increasing spend on its own original commissions as well as striking partnerships with some of the world’s biggest content producers.

He said, “2015 will be a great year for entertainment programming on Sky. The launch this month of Fortitude, our most ambitious drama yet, and the first to launch simultaneously across all five of our markets, is just the first in a slate of exciting new shows that we are bringing to screen this year. I look forward to coming to MIPTV 2015 to lift the lid on our plans and talk to the industry about the scale of the opportunity as we work together to create a powerhouse for TV content across Europe.”

MUMBAI:  For the first time, MIPCOM, the global entertainment content market, launches a conference event to support and discuss a key sector of the international television business- the distribution of TV Channels around the world.

Organised by Reed MIDEM, the 30th anniversary edition of MIPCOM will take place in Cannes, France, from 13-16 October 2014.

This one day programme will take place on Monday October 13th in a dedicated area and will include a series of business-oriented conferences and workshops.Mediamétrie/Eurodata will present data and comments on the growing channel distribution market and leading international platforms will unveil their strategies for the year to come. The ‘Driving the Quest for The Audience: Channel Distribution Strategies for Success’ conference session will showcase new channels with international appeal.

“With the increasing presence of multi-service operators and channels from around the world, carriage deals are a growing part of the market. “It is vitally important that channels and platforms understand each other’s businesses,” says Simon Spanswick, Chief Executive of the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB). “Neither sector can operate independently of each other.
