Dettol’s education programme delivers strong social value

NEW DELHI: RB, under its flagship campaign, Dettol Banega Swasth India has launched the social return on investment (SROI) evaluation study report of its successful Dettol School Hygiene Education Programme at ISC-FICCI Indian Sanitation Conclave 2020. The virtual discussion focused on the need for an integrated approach to Wash in schools in the times of Covid-19.

The link between hygiene and public health has now been clearly established. Yet, proper hand-washing practices remain elusive in much of the country. Even before a meal, 69.9 per cent of rural India still washes their hands without soap. Another 15 per cent only wash their hands with water after defecation. The Dettol School Hygiene Programme was envisioned as a step towards improving poor sanitary practices in schools, homes, and communities, by promoting behavioral changes.

Reckitt Benckiser Health AMESA director external affairs and partnerships Ravi Bhatnagar said, “We at Dettol BSI believe in the idea of health and hygiene for all. Dettol School Curriculum in partnership with our development partners was introduced to drive behavior change among young children based on age-appropriate behavioral nudges. Our aim is to emphasize on the need to facilitate a sanitized environment and to create the importance of Wash in preventing the spread of infection amongst children.”

He further added, “There is a tremendous amount of work done by corporates, NGOs and citizens to work with the government. However, to address the current situation we all must come together to fight this pandemic. A standalone intervention receives a lower social return on investment, however with an integration of interventions which is more nutrition-sensitive including water, right to nutrition, and diarrhoea management, social return on investment touches the ratio of 1:47. This creates a bigger impact on society. It's time we look at hygiene, sanitation and health together and not separately to tackle this pandemic.”

India Sanitation Coalition chair Naina Lal Kidwai said “In addition to the monetary investment, corporates like RB also bring their ability to successfully implement and their need to measure outcomes that we see in the SROI report of the Dettol School Hygiene Education Programme. The fact that we can measure every 1 rupee invested has delivered 33 rupees of social value is a huge multiplier when looking at actual impact on the ground.”

“Through the hygiene programs in school, we have seen role reversal of children & parents where children have taken up the role of teaching the right way to wash hands. They have become an agent of change in communities in spreading awareness about health & hygiene. We believe that the hygiene curriculum should be part of the daily school day. As we have seen through the pandemic, the only way to protect ourselves from diseases is by washing hands.” said Aga Khan Foundation CEO Tinni Sawhney.

    Key highlights from the report:

For every ₹ 1 invested, the Dettol School Hygiene Education Programme delivers ₹ 33.05 of social value
An initial investment of INR 15.9 crore has yielded worthy outcomes through innovations such as using creative platforms to reinforce key hygiene measures, structured hygiene sessions in schools, supporting trainings at multiple levels and more, we have brought about social value worth Rs 526 crore
At a time when hand hygiene is of critical importance to prevent the spread of COVID-19, an increase of 86 per cent in the adoption of hygiene practices by students was witnessed
The program has reached 13 million children so far and counting across 8 states, 40 districts and 650,000 schools across India
250+ Schools awarded by PM under Swachh Vidyalaya (Clean School) Awards
        Direct Impact on children:
14.2 per cent reduction in diarrhoea among children
17 per cent increase in school attendance
89 per cent students follow all the necessary hygiene practices which have been taught in school
92 per cent students share hygiene knowledge with parents and family members

The Dettol School Hygiene Education Programme seeks to drive behaviour change through a multifaceted approach, which targets schools and the community at large. The school programme has been designed in recognition of the fact that, by changing the mindset and behaviour of school students, they can become a catalyst for change in schools, homes and neighborhoods. By working with teachers and principals, the right knowledge can be passed on to build good habits in children and future generations.

The #MissionPaani campaign was inspired by PM Narendra Modi’s appeal to come together for water conservation with Jal Andolan. We also articulated our fight- to ensure access to high quality products, information that drives behaviour change and availability. Water is instrumental in enabling hygiene and sanitation. Because with the availability of water and our commitment to hygiene and sanitation we can put in place a first line of defense to address this issue. Today on World Toilet Day, we are reaching out to a wide audience on a common message on water conservation and hygiene. We can all be ambassadors of water and hygiene. I urge you all to join me to take your Jal Pratigya today.”

Climate Reality Project and Water Aid have joined hands with #MissionPaani – ‘SwachhtaaurPaani’ as Knowledge Partners.

  • Sindhu endorses ‘Apno ke liye Moov karo’

MUMBAI: Moov, the market leader in pain management solutions today announced its new ad campaign ‘Apno ke liye Moov karo’. In one of the TVC, Olympic medallist, P.V. Sindhu will be seen standing up to the nation spreading the key campaign message that Moov enables you to live through the expectations of your loved ones. With this campaign, Moov reinstates its market leadership in pain relief solutions through its product range in ointment and spray categories. The campaign theme of ‘Apno ke liye Moov karo’ aims to enhance connect with the consumers.

RB India marketing head Rohit Jindal said ‘Moov has a legacy of helping people get instant pain relief. With the new campaign we want to say that pain is a sign of pushing yourself to try harder. P.V Sindhu is the pride of our nation and her dedication and determination towards her game is unmatched. We are proud to associate with her as a brand ambassador for Moov. She inspires all of us to moov beyond pain and stretch what is possible.”

Mc Cann World Group India CEO Prasoon Joshi said, “Moov is a dynamic brand and this an insight campaign to further create a stronger brand connect. We really value our relationship with Reckitt Benckiser. We have already taken Dettol from strength to strength with a great partnership with the entire team. With this campaign Moov, am sure will come closer to our consumers”.

Olympic medallist P. V Sindhu said, “I feel overwhelmed to be associated with Moov which is spreading the important message of living a pain free life. I have used the product and recommend it to everyone for instant pain relief and hope that this association will bring relevance to their endeavour”.

In the stagnant category of rubs and balms, Moov decided to beat market leadership with thought-leadership. The category demanded a fresh perspective on pain and subsequently on relief. Pain has largely been depicted in clichéd narratives where the pain sufferer is shown as being unable to perform her chores or household responsibilities or has to compromise on an active lifestyle that gets interfered by incidents of pain. Consequently, even the depiction of relief has been around ‘restoration of normalcy’ – a homemaker back in the kitchen, a young couple back to playing sport, an executive running to catch a bus, etc. became markers of relief. All This demanded the depiction of pain with a fresh perspective. Moov has always understood not just pain, but the sufferer in pain. Falling upon its legacy, Moov understands the impact of pain on people’s lives and thus, the role of pain-relief. Thus was born the idea – ‘Apno Ke Liye Moov Karo’.

The ad campaign was launched in January with their first ad featuring a working mother engaging with her child and doing everything possible to bring joy to their family. The ad showcases that the protagonist chooses to apply Moov and get rid of pain, hence making a right choice for herself and her family. It depicts the essence of the communication which Moov is trying to bring forth.

In the series, the second ad campaign by Moov has been shot with the brand ambassador Sindhu. It brings alive Sindhu, an Indian athlete with huge fan following, practicing at one of the courts before a big match when she pulls her muscle while trying to pick a drop shot. The stadium starts filling with people in anticipation, the world starts preparing to watch the much awaited match (depicted in the TVC through various ways). That’s when P.V. Sindhu reaches out for a MOOV spray and shows her determination by rising for the occasion and kicks off the pain with her Moov spray. She takes a moment to settle and finally stands up for her fans and supporters, thus saying – ‘Apno ke liye Moov karo’.

  • RB India ropes in Vidya Balan as sanitation campaign ambassador

RB India ropes in Vidya Balan as sanitation campaign ambassador

NEW DELHI: Actor Vidya Balan has been named as the brand ambassador of the ‘Changing Behaviour: Creating Sanitation Change Leaders’ campaign launched by RB (erstwhile Reckitt Benckiser) India as part of its nationwide initiative Dettol Banega Swachh India along Pehel and State Governments of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

The project, which aims to make 200 villages in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar free of open defecation was inaugurated by veteran actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha and former Cabinet Minsiter Jairam Ramesh in Patna and UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow along with Balan, who unveiled the mnemonic of the programme.

Other dignitaries present at the event were Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh president and founder Swami Chidanand Saraswati and World Toilet Organization founder Professor Jack Sim.

Balan said, “For the past two years I have dedicated myself towards raising awareness around importance of hygiene and to stop open defecation. I am really proud to be a part of this campaign, which is taking a different route of engaging with stakeholders and creating change leaders at community level to bring about this behaviour change.”

Through the initiative, the programme will reach out and work closely with 500 PRI members, 500 natural and faith based leaders, 500 ASHAs / AWWs and two lakh mothers directly to drive a positive behaviour towards sanitation practices.

Various activities like training of Panchayati Raj Institutions members using toolkit, exposure tours, Sanitation Chaupal, Capacity Building of frontline health workers through game shows and folk shows for sensitising mothers. The progress will be monitored at each step to track the progress and achievements of change leaders will be recognized across these 100 villages in Bihar covering Bhagalpur district and another 100 villages in Uttar Pradesh covering Varanasi, Kannauj and Etawah districts.

RB South Asia regional director Nitish Kapoor said, “We are proud to partner with Pehel and the State Governments of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to launch this initiative, which primarily aims towards driving behaviour change across communities. While we have a dedicated initiative targeting school children, we believe it is equally important to educate and encourage communities to adopt healthier hygiene and sanitation practices to create a positive impact on the society they live in. By the end of this campaign, we aim to help these 200 villages in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to become Open Defecation Free.”

Pehel CEO Anand Madhab added, “To make India achieve its goal of improving sanitation and put an end to open defecation, it is imperative to change mindsets, attitude and behaviour of people towards the issue. Before installing toilets in homes, we need to install toilets in the minds of people. PRI members are local leaders as well as role models in the community and since the key driver for the issue is perception, attitude and behaviour changes we are zeroing in on the most, influential catalysing agent present on ground. Moreover, the project is targeting caregivers (ASHAs/AWWs) and mothers as they play a central role in shaping up the children, the future. The project is the initial step towards changing people’s behaviour towards health, hygiene and sanitation and shall turn into a mega campaign in the near future.”

According to National Sample Survey Office and World Health Organisation, over 600 million Indians have no access to toilets. The proportion is worse in rural India – where 68 per cent of rural households don’t have their own toilets. In order to achieve Open Defecation Free status, the project ‘Changing Behaviour: Creating Sanitation Change Leaders’ will be implemented using a three pronged strategy of environment building; capacity development and changing behaviours.
