Uber flips the script with Gambhir and Ashwin in playful new campaign

MUMBAI: When Gautam Gambhir smiles in an ad, you know the commute must be smooth. Uber India has rolled out a fresh campaign featuring cricket stalwarts Gautam Gambhir and Ravichandran Ashwin, casting them not in their usual serious avatars but in refreshingly playful moods as they zip around in Uber rides.

The series of films, peppered with social-first content, shows how Uber Auto, Bike and Car rides can turn India’s daily grind of traffic snarls, heat and hassle into journeys that are reliable, affordable and surprisingly uplifting.

“We wanted to bring a fresh, fun lens to Uber’s role in removing everyday travel struggles. With the unexpected duo of Gambhir and Ashwin, we’ve created a light-hearted take on how Uber makes rides not just reliable and affordable, but also mood uplifting. Our aim is to be the go-to brand for young Indian aspirers, one that connects function with feeling and nudges even non-users to try Uber for the first time,” said Uber head of marketing for India and South Asia Ameya Velankar.

The campaign takes a culture-first approach, rolling out in multiple regional languages and markets, tapping into local humour, pop culture cues and everyday commuting insights. The wide rollout spans TV, digital, social platforms, and outdoor, ensuring Uber’s message is seen and felt across urban India.

Uber today operates across two-, three- and four-wheelers, along with buses and mass transit options, giving millions of Indians flexibility to pick rides that suit their budget, need and time. From the quick bike dash to beat gridlock, to a trusty auto or a comfortable car trip, Uber has woven itself into India’s urban fabric.

With creative duties handled by FCB India and media by Essence Mediacomm, the campaign underscores Uber’s positioning as more than just a ride, it’s a mood-changer. By making cricket’s most no-nonsense players break into grins, Uber hopes to convince even the most commute-weary Indian that travel can be a happy ride after all.

  • England and India seek improvement in Test Rankings

England and India seek improvement in Test Rankings

MUMBAI: The five-Test series between England and India gets underway in Nottingham on Wednesday 9 July, with both sides aiming to improve their rankings in the Reliance ICC Test Team Rankings Table.

As things stand at present, India occupies fourth position with 102 ratings points, while England is one spot behind with 100 ratings points. Depending upon the outcome of the Test series, both teams can go as high as number three or drop to as low as number seven.

For India, the equation is straightforward: a series win will be sufficient to help it leapfrog Pakistan into third position.

However, a vault up the rankings is a bit trickier for England, which needs to win the series by a difference of no less than two Tests to take on third place. Victory by just one Test will help it swap places with India.

Meanwhile, both teams can potentially drop to number seven. If India wins all five Tests, then Alastair Cook’s side will plummet to seventh position, while a 4-1 series result will see England slip to sixth. Conversely, if England wins the series by 4-0 or better, then India will drop to seventh spot.

To find out exactly how the forthcoming series will affect the Rankings Table, please click here. The ODI and T20I Rankings tables, unlike the Test Rankings Table, are updated after every match.

Movement is also expected on the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen.

India’s Cheteshwar Pujara, static in seventh place, will have the opportunity to break into the top five, while Virat Kohli, who currently occupies tenth position, will have the chance to consolidate his place in the top 10.

Pujara trails fifth-ranked Shivnarine Chanderpaul by 35 ratings points, while Kohli needs 16 ratings points to both move ahead of Ross Taylor of New Zealand and also break the 800-point barrier.

Ian Bell, in 18th place, is the only batsman from England to find a place amongst the top 20.

Outside the top 20, batsmen likely to be seen in action from both the sides are Alistair Cook (21st), Joe Root (26th), MS Dhoni (29th), Matt Prior (32nd), Rohit Sharma (33rd), Murali Vijay (42nd), Ajinikya Rahane (45th) and Shikhar Dhawan (50th).

Gary Ballance and Sam Robson, who did well for England against Sri Lanka, are in 83rd and 94th places, respectively.

India’s Ravichandran Ashwin in seventh position is the highest-ranked bowler from either side in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers. James Anderson (12th) and Stuart Broad (14th) are the other bowlers to feature inside the top 20.

Other bowlers to watch out for are Ishant Sharma (23rd), Ravindra Jadeja (26th), Mohammed Shami (33rd), Ben Stokes (46th), Liam Plunkett (50th), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (73rd) and Chris Woakes (118th).

In the All-rounders’ table, Ashwin (second) and Stuart Broad (fifth) feature in the top five.

    Series schedule:

    9-13 July – 1st Test, Nottingham

    17-21 July – 2nd Test, Lord’s

    27-31 July – 3rd Test, Southampton

    7-11 August – 4th Test, Manchester

    15-19 August – 5th Test, The Oval

After IPL, it’s party time for cricketers at CEAT Cricket Awards

MUMBAI: At a star-studded ceremony held on Monday, CEAT Limited hosted the 2014 edition of the CEAT Cricket Rating International Awards to raise a toast to the gentleman’s game.

Both international and domestic talent was honoured on the basis of CEAT Cricket ratings for the year 2013-14.

India’s top batsman, Virat Kohli, was awarded Overall International Cricketer of the Year. Incidentally, he had won Cricketer of the Year earlier in 2011-12.

Left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan was conferred CEAT ODI player of the year while the youngest of the lot, Vijay Sol took home CEAT Young Player of the Year Award.

In the T20 format, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan won CEAT International T20 player of the Year while Australia’s Mitchell Johnson picked up CEAT International Test Player of the Year.

CEAT Indian player of the year went to Ravichandran Ashwin while IPL Season Seven Star and Australia’s own, Glenn Maxwell walked away with Most Popular Choice of the Year Award.

A new category Domestic Cricketer of the Year was introduced to recognise talent in the domestic circuit. This time, Robin Uthappa bagged the title.

RPG group chairman Harsh Goenka said, “This is a reiteration of the close association CEAT has with cricket and our endeavour is to recognise individual brilliances on the international cricket scene.”

However the highpoint of the evening came when the name of cricketing legend and one of India’s greatest wicketkeepers Syed Kirmani was announced for CCR International Lifetime Achievement Award.

Kirmani got a standing ovation from the crowd as he received the award, teary eyed, to a rousing applause. The man who represented India in 88 tests and 49 ODIs and called it a day after sending cricketers packing a record 234 times was accompanied by his family on the occasion.

Chief adjudicator of the CEAT Cricket Rating and India’s greatest opening batsman Sunil Gavaskar said “CEAT International Cricket rating Awards is one of the most important events in the cricketing calendar as it recognises the achievements of the players from grassroots to the international arena. And it has now reached its 19th year.”

On Kohli’s win a second time this year Gavaskar said, “It is good to see an Indian winning the main award again and that he has won it a second time at such a young age.”

The event featured a comedy act performed by renowned stand-up comedian Saurabh Pant, who through his witty one liners on cricket, brought cheer to the packed audience. The event culminated with a sensational Bollywood performance by Desi Boys star Chitrangada Singh.
