  • Steps to encourage ease of doing film business under way

NEW DELHI: Information and broadcasting secretary Ajay Mittal has said the Ministry has initiated a series of measures to promote ease of doing business and reiterated government’s commitment to work closely with the film industry.

Mittal was speaking at a function where megastar Amitabh Bachchan inaugurated the new office premise of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in Mumbai yesterday.

A number for film personalities including former CBFC Chairman Anupam Kher, Ramesh Sippy, Raveena Tandon, Sonu Sood, Pritish Nandy, Manmohan Shetty, Gajendra Chauhan, Kiran Shantaram, Mukesh Sharma were among those present.

CBFC, which had been functioning from the Bharat Bhavan in the White House Complex on Walkeshwar Road since 1950s, was facing severe space constraint against drastic increase in work load.

Mumbai, being the centre of the Hindi, Marathi, Bhojpuri and Punjabi film industry, accounts for nearly 60% of all certification work of CBFC. During 2015-16, it certified over 11,000 films of various duration including 787 Indian feature films and 690 foreign films for theatrical release in India.

Faced with an acute space constraint, lack of parking facility for visitors, CBFC moved a proposal for allocation of space in the Films Division Complex for a modern, digitally enabled office. It may be recalled that the online film certification system of CBFC was launched by Information & Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu in New Delhi last week.

Ramesh Sippy welcomed the online film certification system saying it would facilitate quicker certification of films.

The Civil Construction Wing of Prasar Bharati has refurbished the new office, which houses the chambers of the Chairman, CEO as well as the Mumbai Regional Office. CBFC, besides its own preview facilities, can now utilize additional preview theatres of Films Division as well to quicken the process of film certification.

The Films Division Complex now houses the offices of Films Division, Children’s Film Society of India, CBFC and also the upcoming National Museum of Indian Cinema, which is expected to promote synergy among different institutions of the I &B Ministry.

MUMBAI: The Quint’s bid to raise aid for four-year old through the crowd funding platform BitGiving, saw phenomenal success.

On 9 October, 2015, a four-year old girl was raped and assaulted by a man known to her family. She has now been christened as ‘Choti Nirbhaya’. One of the leading digital content platforms, The Quint, started a BitGiving campaign that ran from 17 October to 16 November 2015, to collect funds in support of the child’s medical treatment and to ensure a stable future for her.

The Quint received heart-warming response to its initiative. It raised Rs 5.28 lakhs from 256 contributors in India, with an average ticket size of Rs 2,000, excelling their target of Rs 5 lakhs by flying margin. The raised funds will be allocated towards the girl’s recovery and to support her family in this time of need.

Sharing her delight over the success of the campaign, The Quint CEO and co founder Ritu Kapur said, “The ‘Choti Nirbhaya’ case has turned the spotlight yet again on the deplorable state of women’s safety in India’s capital. The four-year-old girl has undergone a series of surgeries at New Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital but her parents have been told that she will not be able to bear a child as an adult. The parents are anxious that she should emerge out of this incident as a self-sufficient adult and to ensure this it is imperative that the child is educated well. Our fund-raising efforts were primarily targetted to this end and we are pleased at the generous contributions that have been made to help Choti Nirbhaya have a better and brighter future.”

The Delhi government also acknowledged The Quint’s reportage of the incident and applauded its efforts to raise funds for the girl’s education and recovery. “The Delhi government is working to cut short the procedure, so that the victim and her family can get the help at the earliest. We are thankful to The Quint for bringing this issue to our knowledge. We complement the organisation for pursuing the case diligently,” said Nagendra Sharma, a spokesperson of the Delhi Government.

The network which had conceptualised the new channel last year is very confident about the channel, its offerings and the packaging. “Now we will see how viewers respond to it,” adds the optimistic Singh.

Targeted at women, mostly housewives, in the age group of 15-34 years, in SEC BCDE, Sony Pal was a dream for Singh, which is now finally taking shape. The target audience was chosen after the result of the research which showed that 88 per cent of viewership for a GEC comes from housewives. “The new channel will complement our other offerings,” he says.

“Today’s women have started realising that they can not only contribute to the society, but also augment family income. Through Pal, we will celebrate these women,” says Singh.

The network did an extensive research before deciding on the content, the channel packaging and the target audience. “Our research showed that there was latent demand for a content which was progressive and positive,” he informs.

The channel is based on the theme ‘Yeh Pal Humara Hai’. “This is the moment to shine, to evolve, to excel and achieve. This moment belongs to her and her alone,” says Sony Pal and Sab senior EVP and business head Anooj Kapoor while adding that this is not a generic promise, but a personalised one.

While no advertisers have currently come onboard, the network is positive about its content. “We have showcased our product to them and they have responded positively. They first want to see the shows and the channel and then decide. And we are in no hurry too,” says Singh.

The channel will look at afternoon slots later. “There is a lot of ground to be covered. This is just the beginning,” adds Kapoor. The shows while initially will be shot at outdoor locations of Patiala, Baroda, Lucknow and other HSM cities, will later move to sets.

The soon-to-go air channel is not free to air and will be available on all the four major multi system operators, DEN Networks, Hathway Cable & Datacom, Siti Cable, Digicable and Fastway in Punjab and all the direct to home (DTH) operators.

On the marketing front, a 360 degree campaign has been designed, which will go live from 10 August. “We have designed a five week campaign with a lot of fresh initiative. One of this is forming women’s club, through which women can identify their talent and can celebrate life,” informs Kapoor.

Manjit Sachdev will be the programming head for the new launch. According to an industry source, the investment in the channel could be anywhere close to Rs 90 crore- Rs 110 crore, including marketing spends. As for the ad rates, a media planner says, “Considering all the shows have been brought in the prime time slot, the ad rate for a 10 second slot could be anywhere close to Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000.”

Filmy’s ‘Aaj Ki Fimly Khabar’ features Raveena Tandon

Astonished by a direct query about the incident where she poured wine on somebody’s head in a party, Raveena Tandon replied that the person was her husband’s ex-wife, she enjoyed doing it, and it was not at all impulsive. To enforce her point she said that she had decided two years back how she would react on seeing her husband’s ex-wife. Raveena used this opportunity to reveal the true story & defend all allegations levied on her. The ex- wife was bad mouthing Raveena and her husband Anil Thadani, and taking undue advantage of her husband’s good and dignified nature. Why she did not take the legal route? Asked, Mayank. “I did not have proof, had I gone legal, the person would have been trapped badly. My objective was to publicly humiliate and teach her a lesson and not spoil her life,” said Raveena.

On her plans of getting back to mainstream cinema or television, Raveena said she is hearing scripts but still enjoys her sabbatical.
