Tata Trusts, Google India and Intel team up to launch Internet Saathi

MUMBAI: The definition of philanthropy is changing with time. In a philanthropic move and in keeping with the ‘Digital India’ campaign started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, business giant Tata Trusts and digital ruler Google India have tied up to launch a special programme called ‘Internet Saathi’ to empower women and their communities in rural India by enabling them to use internet and benefit from it in their daily lives.

The joint initiative is aimed at bridging the technology gender divide, which currently puts women in rural India at further risk of getting marginalized in the society as the world around them benefits from going online. The ‘Internet Saathi’ initiative adds on to the ‘Digital India’ vision of the country. The launch event was also attended by Tata Trusts chairman Ratan Tata.

The initiative will provide basic training on the usage and benefits of internet for women through specially designed internet cycle carts which will be used to visit areas in villages which women can easily access and also learn more from the internet.

Built on the back of a cycle, the cart is modeled on India’s traditional distribution system that is used to carry everything right from ice-creams to industrial supplies. The operator or the ‘Internet Saathi’ keen to train the women, would be akin to the village postman who was the single point contact for the village with the outside world both in terms of information as well as communication. Tata Trusts, with its vast field based ecosystem, will manage the on-ground rollout with its partners whereas Google will invest in providing the internet-enabled carts and the training content.

Google South East Asia and India VP and managing director Rajan Anandan said, “While women are making rapid progress on adoption of internet in urban areas, women in rural India are being left behind. Today only 12 per cent of internet users in rural India are women. We need to come together to address this challenge and empower women in rural India through training and programmes that can truly transform their lives. We are delighted to partner with the most respected and well known Tata Trusts who have years of experience in managing programmes of this scale. By combining our strengths, I am confident that we can achieve great results and overcome the challenges of providing easy access and digital education to women in rural India.”

“Tata Trusts strongly believes that innovative use of technology should be at the core of all its interventions that are undertaken for the benefit of the communities. Internet connectivity has become a fundamental need in any society and improves literacy and access to information that is instrumental for socio-economic development. We are glad that this joint initiative with Google will reach out to the rural communities, especially women in our country and we are confident that it will contribute towards their empowerment and also self-sustenance,” Tata Trusts executive trustee R Venkataramanan.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Google country marketing director India Sandeep Menon asserted, “With this initiative we will educate and empower women of rural India about internet and take them a step closer to entrepreneurship which will enable them to be self dependent. The next set of internet users will be totally different as majority of them will come from the rural part so it’s very important to make them aware about internet.”

The initiative will also be supported by Intel who has been a long term partner of Google India’s Helping Women Get Online initiative. “We believe that the vision of Digital India will empower every Indian citizen with equal opportunities irrespective of cast, creed and gender. At Intel, we believe that skill development and innovation are imperative for realizing the Digital India vision and we are very proud to collaborate with Google and Tata Trusts on the ‘Helping Women Get Online’ initiative especially as we celebrate the Digital India Week,” said Intel vice president SMG, managing director- South Asia Debjani Ghosh.

The initiative will kick off from Gujarat, Rajasthan and Jharkhand and will be rolled out across the country eventually reaching out to over 4500 villages and 5 lakh women and rural communities across rural India over the next eighteen months. The internet cart would be available in the village for a minimum of two days every week for over a period of four to six months. It will create awareness and also try to ensure that adequate training is provided to use the devices till women are confident of using them independently. Once the cart has completed the training in a cluster of three villages, it will be moved to the adjoining cluster for completion of a similar cycle. The training of women, and the community at large would be ensured by involving SHG federations / local NGO members as trainers.

Google’s helping women get online is an initiative to create awareness about the benefits of internet amongst 50 million women in India. Under this initiative, Google conducts various outreach and educational programmes. The programme includes an awareness module, coupled with hands-on training modules aimed at teaching women how to use the internet, including via mobile devices. Since the launch of this initiative, Google has directly trained over 1.5 million women on the basics of the internet.

  • Viewers to decide CNBC-TV18’s top business icons

Viewers to decide CNBC-TV18’s top business icons

MUMBAI: Choosing an icon is never an easy task especially in a country like India where many have strived and done their bit to make the country proud.

Economic growth being utmost importance; over the last decades, India has witnessed a flurry of business thinkers turn into history makers, reinventing its economic growth. To salute them, CNBC-TV18, which is celebrating its 15 years, has launched an initiative called Indian Business Icons.

The endeavour is to form a league of the most powerful business icons that the people of the country think have had a monumental impact, not only on their lives, but also on the Indian economy.

The channel has unveiled the list of the top 30 business icons, arrived at by a robust editorial process. The list includes leaders such as Ratan Tata, Anand Mahindra, Kishore Biyani, Deep Kalra and Kiran Majumdar Shaw amongst others.

Asked upon how were the icons shortlisted, a channel spokesperson highlighted, “These names were shortlisted after an extensive process of going through leaders who have impacted Indian economy in the past 15 years. An eminent jury was drawn up that consisted of the top editorial faces at CNBC-TV18 such as Shereen Bhan (managing editor) and Senthil Chengalvarayan (editor in chief) amongst others.”

The initiative will let people have the power to vote for their own business icon, someone who has significantly changed lives, in the past decade and a half via missed calls, Facebook, Twitter and website voting.

The final list of the chosen 15 business icons will be selected on the basis of public voting, which will be audited by independent auditor Grant Thornton.

“We wanted the final list of 15 to be as close to the real truth as possible and decided that the final decision should lie with those who matter – the people of India. Each of these great men have not only impacted the economy at large but have also touched the lives of Indians in many ways. CNBC-TV18, for the first time in India, provided a platform for the public to decide, which leader according to them deserved to make the cut,” added the spokesperson.

To highlight these icons, the channel has created especially packaged short films (two to three minutes) on each of the nominations. These short films have been running on the channel for some time now. Each film looks at the key high points of the nominee’s contribution to the Indian economy in the past 15 years, hence, the reason for their nomination. “It allows our viewers to make a rational decision while voting. Apart from this, our top anchors discuss the dynamic voting results almost on a daily basis as it throws up interesting rankings,” added the spokesperson.

Additionally, an extensive on-air as well as off-air (digital, radio, print and social media) promotional campaign has been designed for the same.

  • Alibaba in talks with Snapdeal to enter India

Alibaba in talks with Snapdeal to enter India

MUMBAI: As it is ready to embark upon a new journey by launching what may be the biggest IPO ever, Chinese e-retailer Alibaba may also be making a move to tap into the growing Indian retail market through an investment in local e-retailer Snapdeal.

According to an Economic Times report, Alibaba, is in talks with online retailer Snapdeal to enter India. The e-commerce giant is in discussion for a possible investment in the Indian company, but no decision has been taken yet.

The report also quoted a source saying that the deal will be announced in a month.

The Chinese company is expected to be valued at over $165 billion at the conclusion of its initial public offer. So far, Alibaba has only been linking Indian merchants with overseas buyers and sellers.

With its entry in the Indian online retail space by aligning with Snapdeal, the Chinese e-tailer will be competing directly against market leaders like Flipkart and Amazon. Even though the Chinese company would be a late entrant, it has the advantage of size — as per sales Alibaba is bigger than Amazon and eBay combined.

While on the other hand, the Delhi-based company has already raised a total of $233 million in two rounds of investments this year. The last round in May valued the firm at $1 billion. It is expected to be worth Rs 50,000 crore by 2016, according to a market rating agency Crisil.

The company, in which Ratan Tata holds a stake, is also attracting attention from Japan’s largest e-commerce company Rakuten Inc and telecommunications firm SoftBank Corp, the report added.

On contacting Snapdeal, the spokesperson said, “As a policy, we do not comment on such speculations.”

Alibaba’s shares are set to debut on the US market on 19 September, in what could be the world’s largest ever initial public offering. It increased the price range on its offering from $66 to $68 on 15 September, reflecting strong demand from investors for the year’s most anticipated debut.

  • Govt to set up coordination committee with news broadcasters

Govt to set up coordination committee with news broadcasters

NEW DELHI: Clearly alarmed by the cascading effect of what it terms as the unending coverage of the Mumbai terror attacks, the Government today decided to set up a coordination committee with broadcasters to ensure some self-regulation to ensure balanced coverage.

In a meeting with broadcasters presided over by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and External Affairs Anand Sharma, the broadcasters were told that their continued coverage was having a negative effect and also affecting tourism and civil aviation sectors.

Sharma said that while the media in the country was free, it should exercise this independence with restraint and responsibility.

Interestingly, industrialist and hotel magnate Ratan Tata is understood to have informed the Minister that many people are canceling their bookings in the Taj Hotel in Mumbai because of the repetitive showing of the scenes of the Hotel tower burning.

Apart from I&B Secretary Sushma Singh and other officials of the Ministry, secretaries of the Ministries of Home (Internal Security), Tourism, and Civil Aviation were present.

The 20 broadcasters present included TV Today promoter Aroon Purie and Aaj Tak news director QW Naqvi, CNN-IBN and IBN7 editor-in-chief Rajdeep Sardesai, NDTV managing editor Barkha Dutt, India TV chairman Rajat Sharma and Zee Group’s Jawahar Goel.

The meeting comes even as news broadcasters are still to react on an advisory issued last week on the continual coverage of the terrorist attack in Mumbai.

In addition, notices had been issued to India TV and Aaj Tak to the effect that the channel’s coverage was creating public panic. India TV had thereafter sent its reply to the Ministry.

Aaj Tak had been accused of acting in a manner that may affect ’the integrity of the country’.

One broadcaster described the meeting as routine and said it was the third meeting in the last two weeks.

The news broadcasters still appear to be divided on their reaction to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry’s advisory to all news channels not to carry on with the coverage of the Mumbai attacks by showing the same clips which were now several days old and which only created panic.

  • CNN IBN announce ‘Indian of the year’ awards

CNN IBN announce ‘Indian of the year’ awards

Mumbai: The winners of the ‘CNN IBN Indian of the year’ awards for sports, politics and business were announced by the channel. Golfer Jeev Milkha Singh won in the sports category while Dr. Manmohan Singh and Ratan Tata were winners in the politics and business category respectively.

The winners in each category were chosen through a public voting process and the Electoral College.

“I would like to convey my heartiest congratulations to the three winners for being chosen the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in their respective fields. They are truly the most deserving aspirants emerging successful despite tough competition from fellow nominees and a rigorous selection process involving the public and Electoral College. Their various endeavours and achievements have made the nation hold its head high with pride- making them true Indian icons,” says CNN IBN and IBN 7 editor in chief Rajdeep Sardesai.

  • Manmohan Singh CNN IBN’s ‘Man of the Year’

Manmohan Singh CNN IBN’s ‘Man of the Year’

NEW DELHI: The word was out early last morning in huge ads splashed in newspapers that Dr Manmohan Singh, the Indian premier had won the Indian Man of the Year in the “Politics” category, but later in the evening in a high-tech massive awards ceremony, he was declared the overall winner of the CNN-IBN Indian Man of the Year 2007.

The organisers had thought he would perhaps finally be able to make it, but he could not. The award was received on his behalf by Dr Sanjay Baru, his media in-charge. But soon after, Singh was shown receiving his award at his residence in a special TV coverage. The gala event saw some of the top men and women from business, media and political fields attend the first ever CNN-IBN Indian Man of the Year awards.

With the biggest ever business takeover of Corus Steel by the Tata group, Ratan Tata expectedly won the award in the business category. He too could not attend and the prize and citation were received by his representative.

Laxmi Narayan Mittal had also been in the running in the business section, but had to make way to Tata. However, his stature and achievement was rewarded by a Jury Award. But perhaps the best surprise was in the sports category, with Jeev Milkha Singh winning the sports award, with a proud father, Flying Sikh, Milkha Singh applauding. Sania Mirza failed the rigorous tests and processes involved, though Amar Singh, sitting in the audience would have none other than her as his choice.

“Jeev’s mother and I never wanted him to be a sportsperson, because when we were in sports there was no money in it. We wanted him to become a doctor or engineer, but he went ahead and became a golfer. Now that he has done so, he must win every award in the sport,” Milkha Singh said.

There were two other delightful decisions. Rajkumar Hirani, director of “Lagey Raho Munnabhai” and the right to information missionary Arvind Kejriwal won the awards in the entertainment and social work categories.

Hirani said he was overwhelmed by the audience reaction to the film. “I was scared when we did the film. It is truly gratifying that a concept like Gandhism has found a meaning in the context of the 21st century India,” Hirani said.

Introducing the awards, CNN-IBN chief editor Rajdeep Sardesai said that the idea was first floated by one of his senior colleagues but “My first reaction was – Oh, another award.” He said that most Indian awards were confusing: who chose them, on what criteria, what was the credibility?

“We decided that if we have to go for an awards ceremony, we needed to have that credibility. That is why some of India’s top people were selected as jury, headed by eminent jurist Soli J Sorabjee.” Strict criteria were fixed and nominations received from across the country. These were scrutinised and the jury spent days going through the process.

“We wanted the Indian’s to vote as a whole and hence the SMS votes were also invited,” However, Sardesai said that “We knew SMS votes can be fixed, so there was a modicum of doubt about that.” Still, he said, some factors were considered from there.

Finally, the awardees were decided and he along with the jury were satisfied with the choice as credible and acceptable.

The jury comprised of Sorabjee, senior police officer and social worker Kiran Bedi, former billiards champion Geet Sethi, industrialist Deepak Parekh and Infosys boss Nandan Nilekani.

Interestingly, before the announcement of prize for each category, members of the audience were asked their choice. In one such response, railways minister Laloo Prasad drew laughter when he refused to comment. “Yeh judicial mamla hain, to jury nay jo kaha hum usko mantey hain (This is a judicial matter, and I stand by the verdict of the jury).

Sadesai had spoken of the new, vibrant India, the cynosure of world business, and it was thus in the fitness of things that Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi bagged the jury’s verdict in the NRI category.

The audience was regaled when Sorabjee said that deciding on awards was fraught with danger, of losing old friends, but in a more serious note, added that 100 top Indians had been initially short-listed and the most important deciding factor in the final verdict was, did the person concerned do India proud in his or her area of activity and put India on the global map?

Somenath Chatterjee, Speaker, Lok Sabha brought the ceremony late at night by a long and arduous speech.
