  • Delhi High Court dismisses plea seeking ban on movie ‘Ram-Leela’

Delhi High Court dismisses plea seeking ban on movie ‘Ram-Leela’

Even as the Delhi High Court has dismissed a public interest litigation seeking a ban on the release of the movie Ram-Leela on the ground that it would hurt the religious sentiments of people, a review petition is coming up on this issue in the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court later this week.

A division bench of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justice Manmohan of Delhi High Court imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on NGO Rashtravadi Shiv Sena which filed the plea wanting a change of title of the movie starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone should be changed as it hurts the religious sentiments of people.

(The Allahabad High Court had earlier rejected a similar petition by social activist Nutan Thakur on the ground that the film had not been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification. However, Thakur has filed a review on the plea that the trailer has been passed by the CBFC.)

Ram-Leela, which is scheduled to be released on 15 November, has been directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

The plea in Delhi filed by the NGO’s president Jai Bhagwan Goyal said: “The title Ram-Leela which is understood by Hindus as enactment of the life and story of Lord Ram (Maryada Purshottam), is nowhere doing the same but on the contrary the film is portraying sex, violence and vulgarity, which is deeply hurting the religious sentiments and feelings of Hindus.”

“The enactment, production and scheduled release of the film Ram-Leela is a gross insult to the religious feelings of Hindus,” the plea said, adding the objection is only in respect of naming such a film Ram-Leela.

  • Allahabad High Court declines to act on Bhansalis Ramleela as it has not been certified

Allahabad High Court declines to act on Bhansalis Ramleela as it has not been certified

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has said it is not appropriate to pass any directions to the Central Board of Film Certification at this stage because the Board has not taken any decision on the matter so far.

The Bench of Justice Imtiyaz Murtaza and Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya said the film has not yet been certified for public exhibition as required under Section 4 of the Cinematograph Act 1952 and hence the process of certification has not yet concluded.

It said that at the time when CBFC examines the film for issuing certificate for public exhibition, it is expected that the Board will act in accordance with the provision of Cinematograph Act and other related laws.

The Court order came on a writ petition against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Ramleela on allegations that the title has religious connotations and hurts the religious sentiments of Hindus.

Social activist Nutan Thakur said in the petition that the film slated for release on 15 November calls itself Ramleela of bullets. The official trailer of the film “shows abusive language and intimate scenes between Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone which are far away from the religious connotation the word ‘Ramleela’ carries”.

The petitioner had prayed for immediate change of the name of the film and banning of Promos or non-grant of a certificate by the CBFC if the producer does not do so.

Directed by Bhansali and produced by him and Kishore Lulla (Eros International), the film is loosely based on William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ but set in violent times. It stars Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Supriya Pathak, Richa Chadha, and Priyanka Chopra as guest artiste in an item number.
Bhansali has said he is paying an ode to his mother’s name with this film.

Priyanka Chopra gets ready for Ramleelas item number

Priyanka (Babli) Chopra has turned more badmash for Ram Leela’s item song. Priyanka who recently made headlines for her item numbers Babli Badmash and Pinky, is all set to drive her fans crazy once again with her upcoming sexy moves in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ramleela.

The special dance number has been choreographed by Prabhu Deva’s brother Vishnu Deva. 20 other performers have joined the leggy lass in the item number.

Though her latest item numbers Babli Badmash and Pinky failed to impress her fans, her look in the Ramleela number is quite blazing and promising.

Set in rural Gujarat, Bhansali’s Ramleela is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet, starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in lead roles. The movie also features Supriya Pathak, Richa Chadda, Gulshan Devaiah, Shweta Salve, Barkha Bisht Sengupta, Abhimanyu Shekhar Singh and Sharad Kelkar.

  • Shaadi Ke Side Effects to release on Valentine’s day

Shaadi Ke Side Effects to release on Valentine’s day

It seems Shaadi Ke Side Effects starring Vidya Balan and Farhan Akhtar is facing a tough time with no free slots available for the film’s release. Initially, the romantic movie was slated to release on 6 December, but now it has been postponed to 14 February. The duo is sharing the screen space for the first time.

It is said that the producers of the movie are playing safe, taking into consideration that the much hyped Dhoom 3 has occupied the slot for December release.

However, yet again, the February release is not a clean release for SKSE considering the fact Yash Raj’s Gunday starring Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor too comes out on Valentine’s day.

Shaadi Ke Side Effects is produced by Balaji Motion Pictures along with Pritish Nandy Communications and is directed by Saket Chowdhary.

Chowdhary ventured into direction with his directorial debut Pyaar Ke Side Effects which became a surprise success in the multiplexes.

Dia Mirza and film-maker Karan Johar will host the awards this year. Initially, Saif was the first choice, but he was unable to attend because of a clash of dates.

  • Bhaag Milkha Bhaag collects Rs 30.6 crore in opening weekend

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag collects Rs 30.6 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, which started slow on Friday, improved over next two days, peaking on Sunday. The film found patronage at multiplexes while the single screens reflected poor performance at most places. The film has managed to collect Rs 30.6 crore in its opening weekend. The film is expected to sustain at a few multiplexes in Mumbai, Delhi and NCR besides Punjab. The distributors of D-Day, due next Friday, skeptical about getting playtime are now sure of good screens.

Sixteen has failed to get audience.

The Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha love story Lootera which had a fair weekend due to support from Metro multiplexes, dropped drastically after the weekend and ended its first week run with Rs 22.4 crore. With its limited face value and heavy storyline, it failed to sustain. This is Vikramaditya Motwane‘s second directorial venture, following the critically acclaimed Udaan (2010).

Policegiri, which stars Sanjay Dutt, has failed badly; its typical south content, Dutt and crude treatment failed to jell. The film has collected Rs 13.25 crore in its first week. Dutt‘s next release this year would be the Zanjeer remake where he would be reprising the memorable role of Sher Khan previously essayed by the late legend Pran in the 1973 original.

The Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan starrer Ghanchakkar has added Rs 1.5 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 28.8 crore. With a poor script and execution, the film has not added much.

Raanjhanaa, which marked the debut of the south superstar Dhanush of Kolavari Di fame, and met with mixed response due to its second half, has sustained well in its third week by collecting Rs 7.25 crore and taking its three week tally to Rs 56.55 crore.

Excel Productions‘ youth flick Fukrey survives its fourth week with figures of Rs 1.5 crore and taking its four week total to Rs 34.2 crore.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has added Rs 50 lakh for its sixth week to take its six week tally to Rs 182.55 crore. Ayan Mukherjee‘s second directorial venture has certainly gone down well with the audiences across the globe; it has certainly set the benchmark for the highest grosser for this year.

Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor in YRF’s next Gunday

MUMBAI: Fresh from its success of Ek Tha Tiger, Yash Raj Films has announced its next project Gunday that will star Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor in lead roles.

The film is based amidst the most turbulent times in the history of Kolkata, then Calcutta, from 1971 to1988, where Bikram and Bala rose from being small time wagon breakers and coal thieves to becoming the biggest and most powerful black marketing mafia-men.

A rare combination of vigour and wit, the two were inseparable and the city of Calcutta swore by their friendship then. As their notoriety became the stuff of legends, the people of the sprawling city started calling these two carefree rebels as Gunday.

Hunt is on for the leading lady who would play a stellar role in the film, while the cast will be announced shortly.

Incidentally, the film would be both Ranveer and Arjun‘s third film with YRF and the first time when these two have been featured together.

The film, which goes on floor this December, will be directed by Ali Abbas Zafar who had earlier directed Meri Brother Ki Dulhan.
