  • Gunday: Old wine rebottled

    Gunday: Old wine rebottled

MUMBAI: Gunday is a story based in 1970s and 80s. And, in keeping with the era, the story is also what was called mass masala in those days. What is new about it? Well, after seeing a lineup of films with Delhi background, this has Kolkata as the backdrop.

Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor are two orphaned refugee kids from Bangladesh who join the tide of other refuges and enter a refugee camp in Bengal. Wanting to cash in on their innocence, an officer and a tout decide to use them as conduits to transport guns outside the camp. When the officer gets the urge for a woman and finds none in the camp, he decides to use one of the two boys. This leads to the boys committing their first crime as the officer is shot dead. They make their escape on a goods train carrying coal and come to Kolkata.

While doing odd jobs, they dream big, which of course, is not easy to achieve unless one gets into illegal dealings. They see the use of coal all around and think of the wagon train they travelled in and decide to steal from wagons and sell coal at half the market price. It is the 1980s now and the lads have grown up and graduated to stealing entire trainloads of coal instead of just a few kilos, in the process killing the earlier don and his whole gang. With that materialises the car and the home they dreamt of all along. The boys are more than blood brothers, so inseparable that they even share the same bed!

    Producer: Aditya Chopra.

    Director: Ali Abbas Zafar.

Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor,
Irrfan Khan, Saurabh Shukla. (Darshan Gurjar and Jayesh
    V Kardak as young Ranveer
    and Arjun.)

The two soon start other businesses and even have a logo designed for their ventures: BB (for Bala and Bikram, the screen names). While they have been busy building an empire and establishing themselves as the most feared dons of Kolkata, the police chief is busy collecting a horde of files on their crimes. As the duo looks unstoppable, the chief hands over the case to one cop who can stop them – Irrfan Khan. But they remain unperturbed as even with so many files, the police had no proof or witnesses so far. Irrfan takes on the onus to collect proof against them. He starts his job by planting a mole around them.

The duo has financed a night club and gets the privilege of inaugurating the club. There they set their eyes on Priyanka Chopra, the club’s star performer. Both fall in love with her instantly. Two men in love with same woman, just the situation that is enough to put their friendship to the test. Circumstances are created whereby not only the friendship is broken but now the friends for life are ready to kill each other. The enmity starts with a no-holds-barred fistfight and later leads to the use of guns.

As the film gets into the latter parts post interval, things become predictable. The surprises don’t surprise the viewer.

With few characters to carry it, the film is too lengthy at 153 minutes. It could have been shorter. With a loose script, the direction is copybook, offering no sparks of genius. Kolkata locations are exploited well. The film’s music works to its advantage with three songs having popular appeal in Asalaam- e-ishqum…, Jashn- e- ishq…… and Tune maari entriyaan and has helped the film get a better opening. The lead actors, Ranveer and Arjun are not really known for histrionics but having nothing negative against their names so far, they draw the young crowd. However, they needed a younger girl to fall in love with rather than Priyanka whom one would consider in the senior league. Irrfan and Saurabh Shukla are good as usual.

Gunday has had a good opening all over (Delhi, NCR and UP affected a bit earlier in the day due to rains). With solo release as an advantage and its two young heroes, the film has everything working for it at the box office.

  • YRF’s ‘Gunday’ to release in Dolby Atmos

YRF’s ‘Gunday’ to release in Dolby Atmos

MUMBAI: Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB) and Yash Raj Films today announced that the much-anticipated movie Gunday will be releasing in Dolby® Atmos™—the latest in cinema sound technology. Dolby Atmos unleashes the potential of sound in storytelling by giving filmmakers the creative freedom to easily place or move sounds anywhere in the movie theatre to create a lifelike cinema sound experience. Gunday will be released across theatres in India and worldwide on February 14, 2014, by Yash Raj Films (YRF).

Gunday, a Hindi action movie is written & directed by Ali Abbas Zaffar and produced by Aditya Chopra. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and Produced by Aditya Chopra, the film stars Ranveer Singh & Arjun Kapoor, as Bikram and Bala, along with Priyanka Chopra and Irrfan Khan, in lead roles. Set during the most turbulent times in the history of Calcutta, from 1971 to 1988, the story revolves around Bikram and Bala, who rose from being small time wagon breakers and coal thieves to becoming the biggest and most powerful black market mafia-men. As their notoriety became the stuff of legends, the people of this sprawling city started calling these two carefree and inseparable rebels as Gunday.

“I have always strived to make breakthroughs in my movies, from storytelling to production,” said Ali Abbas Zafar, director of Gunday. “Dolby Atmos is a wonderful tool that enables us to do just that. It allows us to present an even more realistic story with an amazing audio experience that not only excites the ears but also touches the heart. He further added, “We are really looking forward to the release of Gunday in Dolby Atmos, which will transport the audiences to the onscreen action of the movie presenting them with a more realistic entertainment experience.”

Gunday has been natively mixed in Dolby Atmos by rerecording sound mixer Anuj Mathur at YRF Studios. Dilip Subramaniam is the movie’s sound designer. Mixing in Dolby Atmos can simplify workflows because a native Dolby Atmos mix can be used to create 5.1- and 7.1-channel surround sound versions.

Commenting on the announcement, Pankaj Kedia, Country Manager, Dolby Laboratories India, said, “Dolby Atmos brings a natural lifelike audio experience to movie theatres, giving filmmakers the creative freedom to place and move sounds anywhere in the auditorium, including overhead, for added realism and impact. • Life OK rides on Screen Awards’ success

Life OK rides on Screen Awards’ success

MUMBAI: When one of television’s biggest properties – the Screen Awards – moved from Colors to Life OK, the second Hindi general entertainment channel from the Star stable, some feared there could be a drop in viewership for the Bollywood award show.

Life OK proved the naysayers wrong. The awards ceremony this year had a whopping 9.0 million TVTs, 23 per cent more than the 6.9 million TVTs (ratings provided by Life OK) garnered by Colors for the last year’s edition of the awards show.

The Screen Awards saw Life OK’s gross viewership rising sharply. The channel’s GVTs jumped to 375 million in Week 4 of TAM ratings from 347 million a week earlier. The show on Life OK had Kamla Pasand as the title sponsor and 13 other sponsors.

Life OK officials chose to remain tight-lipped about the financial details of the show. Industry sources said the channel was expecting Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 1,50,000 for 10 seconds, but closed most deals between Rs 80,000-1,00,000.

“The 20th Annual Life OK Screen Awards were the channel’s first big-ticket Bollywood event and we are delighted with the response from our viewers not only in India but all over the world. With a clear intent to disrupt both – how an event is programmed and marketed, with Screen properties, we managed to reach out to more viewers than the biggest events and movies on television (in this year so far) – to be precise 74 million people,” said Life OK general manager Ajit Thakur.

“This is just the beginning of Life OK’s journey to the next level – watch out for more.”

The 20th Annual Screen Awards themed ‘Commemorating heroes’ celebrated excellence in over 30 categories across the entire sweep of filmmaking in the Hindi and Marathi film industry.

For Thakur, the success of the awards owes mainly to ‘content’ apart from extensive research and hard work.

“We have always believed that when we pick up something new, we want to do it differently and in a Life OK way. This is why we picked up Screen Awards amongst all the awards. And even there, we did not go for regular humour which is associated with all the awards. We gave it a substantial meaning and that is where Shah Rukh Khan was very supportive and the event was a full family entertainer with the important theme of ‘Heroes integrated’ in the show,” he explained.

Thakur said a lot of the content was personally driven by Khan as he took interest and invested time. SRK was leaving for Dubai for another award show when the Life OK scriptwriter accompanied him on the flight and improvised the script.

The content was also repackaged. “When the Screen Awards shifted from Colors to our channel, everyone thought ratings will drop. But the reason why we partnered and Screen came on-board was they saw a match of content and intent where we believe entertainment must come with inspiration,” said Thakur.

A special awards category ‘Hero of the Year’ was introduced. There were special moments galore, what with SRK introducing heroes or Deepika Padukone performing on a giant nagada several feet above the ground – her act was an ode to the emotional journey of a woman.

The actors, who performed in the show, started rehearsing 10 days prior to the shoot. The acts were choreographed by Geeta Kapoor and the set was designed by production designer and art director Omung Kumar. The set designing took five-six days. To capture the interesting moments, close to 20 fixed cameras were used.

Apart from the content, Life OK’s marketing strategy worked well too. A month prior to the event, a huge outdoor campaign was held across Delhi, Mumbai and other cities in Maharashtra with SRK. Ads were released across major newspapers on the day of the telecast as well as a week before it was aired on the channel. Promos were aired across the Star Network and even outside of it. Digitally, #LifeOKScreenAwards was trending on Twitter on the day of the telecast.

The post-production work was completed in less than 10 days. Shot on 14 January, the awards were telecast on Life OK on 25 January, a day prior to the telecast of the Filmfare Awards on Sony Entertainment Television.

LOOTERA is an intrinsically earnest and profoundly heartwarming story. The movie is partly based on author O. Henry’s 1907 short story ‘The Last Leaf’. Set in the era of 1950s, the film stars Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha. Lootera is a love saga of yore.

Recollecting certain difficulties while shooting the film, Ranveer Singh stated, “Dalhousie was a particularly jinxed and difficult schedule to complete, we had to reschedule the sequence three times and finally got lucky the third time. The first time we went there it was snowing so heavily that the set collapsed under the weight of the snow. The entire set in Dalhousie just caved in. The second time we went there, the conditions were so harsh and I was supposed to do an action sequence and my body was not warmed up. Also, I hurt my back and we had to abandon that schedule too. When we went back the third time there was hardly any snow. So we were just not experiencing the right kind of luck with the weather.”

MUMBAI: Their sizzling chemistry on-screen has been making news since last many days. And actor Ranveer Singh has been quite kicked about the steamy kissing scene with co-actor Deepika Padukone in their upcoming Ram Leela that has been a talk of the town of late.

It’s obvious that the filmmaker isn’t too happy with the CBFC directive but is not left with many option as he would like to get a U/A certificate for his film.
