CNN Worldwide appoints Rani Raad as president, CNN commercial

MUMBAI: CNN Worldwide has appointed Rani Raad as president, CNN commercial, in a new global position to broaden the company’s new business streams and increase the value that CNN provides to commercial partners around the world.

By centralizing the management and strategy of its commercial activity in one operation, CNN is creating a more integrated, agile and global approach to the way it assesses market needs, develops solutions and works with partners.

To achieve this and ensure that CNN is best positioned to continue its commercial success into the decade, Raad will work closely with WarnerMedia Sales and International on its CNN advertising and distribution activity, lead international business through CNN International Commercial, optimize CNN Worldwide’s directly controlled revenue operations and maximize the commercial potential of development of new products.

Effective immediately, Raad reports directly to Jeff Zucker, Chairman, WarnerMedia News and Sports & President, CNN Worldwide.

“There has never been a more important time to be strategic and purposeful about revenue generation across the platforms of CNN Worldwide,” said Zucker. “By aligning Rani and his team more closely with the rest of the CNN organization, there is no doubt it will make a big difference in our ability to find new ways of doing business and enhanced opportunities for our clients around the world.”

Raad, a CNN veteran of 22 years, started his career at the company in New York before holding a number of senior international roles with CNN and WarnerMedia. In 2013, Raad combined all business operations of CNN’s properties outside of the United States within the division CNN International Commercial (CNNIC), including advertising, sponsorship, content sales & licensing, out of home, marketing and audiences & data. Since then, as president of CNNIC Raad has developed the business by introducing a cross-platform and data-led strategy with increased digital capabilities, tailored for a wide range of client and market needs across over 200 countries and territories.

Raad said: “I don’t think I have ever seen a time when CNN has been so influential, both in the US and internationally. An era of structural change in the media market, the increased demand for verified news and the economic impact of Covid-19 is fundamentally changing the way we need to work with our business partners. With our premium brand, sophisticated solutions and worldwide reach, it’s now more important than ever before that our business partners, wherever they are, have greater and faster access to CNN’s full suite of global capabilities.”

CNN International Commercial has commissioned new research

MUMBAI: CNN International Commercial commissioned new research that shows huge demand from worldwide audiences in following the story of this year’s U.S. Elections. The study also confirms CNN as the leading international media covering the U.S. Election – building on the network’s agenda-setting coverage and record TV and digital ratings during the Presidential race so far.

To understand how the world views and is following one of the biggest stories of 2016, CNN commissioned independent research company Toluna to assess* the viewing habits and opinions of adults in 23 countries across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia Pacific, plus Canada. The findings of this research were released ahead of CNN International launching a new nightly U.S. Election show – State of the Race. From May 17, the show will be anchored from CNN’s New York bureau by Kate Bolduan and give international audiences 30 minutes of insight and analysis into the story that the world is watching with intense interest.

In the research findings released today, 51 per cent of all respondents select CNN as the #1 international news provider for following the U.S. Election – a figure higher than all other news organisations combined and dwarfing any preference for other media such as BBC (19 per cent), Reuters (5 per cent and Sky News (4 per cent). 78 per cent of respondents say they have viewed or read CNN coverage, with 83 per cent of these people consuming CNN’s political content within the last week. The majority of people getting their news fix about the U.S. Election are doing so through CNN International’s linear channel – 50 per cent say they consume via TV, 31 per cent on the CNN website, 14 per cent on social media and 8 per cent via the CNN app.

Outside of news consumption habits, the study found huge interest amongst international audiences for the U.S. Election. 85 per cent of people view the election as important for the world at large, with 73 per cent of respondents saying they are personally interested in U.S. Election news.

The top reasons that people state as why they are interested in the U.S. Election are: importance for the world at large (68 per cent); importance for their country (47 per cent); potential to affect individuals economically (38 per cent); insight into the US political system (35 per cent); shows how Americans view the world (34 per cent); and the personalities of the competing  candidates (33 per cent). Asked why they think the U.S. Election is important to the world at large – respondents say it is due to: the US’s significance to the global economy (64 per cent); implications for international relations (63 per cent); US’s role in global security and counter-terrorism (57 per cent); trade prospects and potential for a shift to more hardline US foreign policy (both 43 per cent).

CNN International Commercial forges two new partnerships

MUMBAI: CNN International commercial has expanded its arms in the English language learning and international money transfers through two new partnerships. The channel is all geared to launch a learning service titled CNN Learn English.

The subscription based digital service will provide English language learning by overlaying CNN video content with Papagei.com, a Germany based learning solutions provider, by its unique translation and learning aids.

The content is focused on finance and business, spanning a range of subject matters and a variety of dialects. The new service will be available globally to the consumers directly or to companies wishing to up skill its workforce.

The brand is also being licensed to launch CNN Money Transfers in partnership with international payments and foreign exchange specialist Moneycorp. CNN Money Transfers will be a payment tool managed by Moneycorp, offering consumers a highly competitive service to transfer money without paying commission and the higher exchange rates often charged by mainstream banks.

“These initiatives are yet more steps in our ambition to take the CNN brand to wider audiences by entering into smart partnerships that enhance our footprint. In a changing media landscape, these partnerships add new revenue streams to our business, but more importantly launch new CNN services that will be valued amongst our audiences. We look forward to working closely with Papagei.com and moneycorp to develop these propositions,” said CNN International Commercial chief commercial officer Rani Raad.

The two new initiatives will be marketed across CNN International digital platforms, giving the audience the opportunity to benefit from both the products.

CNN-IBN to split; Turner explores opportunity for new partner

MUMBAI: Turner Broadcasting System owned American giant CNN’s tie up with Reliance Industries’ TV18 will cease to exist, come January 2016.

Amidst speculations of various possible team ups CNN International chief commercial officer Rani Raad informs Indiantelevision.com, “The partnership ran the natural course of its agreement and a mutual decision was made to chart our own respective growth independently. We are very proud of what we have co-created with TV18 for the Indian market.”

In an official media statement Network18 Group CEO A.P. Parigi said, “The last decade has seen a lot of momentum in the Indian media industry and has been particularly exciting for us. During this time we witnessed two media houses coming together to redefine the way news is presented to a demanding audience; we at TV18 have benefited from this relationship with CNN. At the launch of the channel, TV18 was a relatively small organisation; that has changed now.  Network18 has grown from two news channels in 2005 to 17 news channels in 2015. Today, we have the largest footprint in the current affairs, regional and business news space in India.  The TV18 line-up of channels today are well established and highly regarded in this dynamic, complex and challenging environment.”

The venture is yet to come to a consensus and is currently exploring all the options. “CNN remains deeply committed to long-term participation in India, one of the world’s largest and most vibrant media markets. As is the natural course of business, we continue to explore opportunities in India and every other important market around the world. Our #1 international news brand in Asia Pacific and the rest of the world, and the winner of multiple prestigious awards, CNN International, continues to lead and serve consumers in India with the best of global news content across multi-platforms,” informs Raad.

With media reports suggesting a possible tie-up between CNN and Zee Media Corporation Limited (ZMCL), a source close to the development says, “Yes, CNN is in talks with ZMCL. But, it will be premature to say that the deal has been locked, as CNN is speaking to other players in the market as well.”

The partnership started in 2005 with CNN Turner International signing a deal with TV18 group company Global Broadcast News (GBN), which was then headed by journalist Rajdeep Sardesai. This marked the launch of CNN-IBN. Last year, Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Industries took total ownership of Network 18 Media which was founded by Raghav Bhal in 1993.
