Sahara One, Endemol present Super Star reality show

NEW DELHI: You think you look like Shah Rukh Khan. You think you move like Khan. You think you act like him. But for one night, can you make millions believe you really are Shah Rukh Khan?

Coming this September, Sahara One Television brings alive a brand new reality concept, Super Stars, in association with Endemol India.

The new show proposes to provide Bollywood fans with an opportunity to showcase their talent and perform as their favourite star.

This international format has seen a production of over 70-odd series in 20 countries across the globe under different names like Sound Mix and Stars in the Eyes.

The Indian version of this show kick starts with a five-city audition on Sahara One starting 10 August, 2006.

In each episode, contestants compete by copying their favourite artist as faithfully as possible.

“India is a nation obsessed with Bollywood. There are temples, clubs, associations dedicated to film actors. Dancing and singing is not only about performing; it’s a passion that drives the souls of many. It’s our endeavour to provide a national platform for such talent,” Sahara One COO Purnendu Bose says.

The jury for Super Stars includes Bollywood heavy weights like the gorgeous Urmila Matondkar and ace choreographer Shiamak Davar. There would be floating judges too for particular episodes.

The whole of August, Super Stars will do a nation-wide hunt in an attempt to unearth the flair people possess to be like their stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee, Saif Ali Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Kajol, Preity Zinta, Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Kareena Kapoor, Hritik Roshan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.

The contestants will be judged on three parameters – look and style, acting and dance — and will vie for the ultimate honour: the title of Super Star.

According to Endemol India MD Rajesh Kamat, “We are very excited to partner with Sahara One Television on this special format. It is a show people will connect with and it will feature people that they will connect with.”

Kamath added that they have received “tremendous response” from people. Aspirants aged 18 years and above can walk in and audition at the city level. This would be applicable to five cities that include Ludhiana (August 10-12), New Delhi (August 13-14), Kolkata (August 17-18), Bhopal (August 20-21) and Mumbai (August 22-23).

Hundred and twenty winners from the regional auditions will be invited to Mumbai and groomed by experts.

Sahara One Television is part of the umbrella brand Sahara One, whose other businesses include Sahara One Motion Pictures, which is India’s largest player in the motion pictures business.

Endemol is a global leader in television and other audiovisual entertainment. The company creates premium entertainment ideas and sells them to the world’s leading broadcasters. Subsequently, the company exploits the value of its brands across other media and communications platforms including mobile phones and the Internet.

  • For Yash Raj, only Fanaa’s TV strategy on track

For Yash Raj, only Fanaa’s TV strategy on track

MUMBAI: It’s a big movie from the biggest banner in the country – Yash Raj. And while the latest Aamir Khan blockbuster Fanaa is roiled in one controversy after another, on the small screen, it is all going smoothly. Or so the studio’s representatives aver.

Yash Raj Films VP Music and Home Entertainment Vijay Kumar rubbishes reports which appeared in certain sections of the media that the studio has demanded money from television channels to telecast Fanaa promos and songs. “For Fanaa, we have associated with all the channels, including Star World, HBO and ETC Music. The rumours that Yash Raj has locked horns with the music channels over telecast rights of these music videos are absolutely baseless. We have never demanded money for telecasting Fanaa promos and songs, and in fact, it is Yash Raj who has to pay these channels money for airing these clips.”

When contacted by indiantelevision.com, Zee Telefilms however remained noncommittal. “No comments on the official position,” reads an SMS sent by spokesperson Ashish Kaul. Channel [V] head honcho Amar K Deb said that the channel had some spots of Fanaa. A source close to B4U also confirmed that the channel was running Fanaa promos and song clips.

Kumar explains that the production house has in fact employed a certain promotional strategy which involves all the channels. “Yash Raj follows a certain promotional strategy when it comes to television. We shift our promos and music videos from one channel to another from time to time and this shift is strategically designed to get the maximum coverage. We are telecasting our 60 second song and promo clips on all the channels.”

On Yash Raj’s exclusive tie up with MTV and Sony, Kumar adds, “It is true that we have exclusive tie-ups with Sony and MTV for programming and marketing activities. But that has nothing to do with providing the Fanaa content to other channels. Our association with these channels are on and there is no disagreement between Yash Raj and the channels over payment issue.”

Agrees MTV VP creative content Ashish Patil, “What MTV has with Yash Raj Films on Fanaa is an exclusive marketing tie-up. MTV holds the tradition of being a key player in the TV promotions of all the Yash Raj Films and this continues with Fanaa also. The Fanaa music was released on MTV and we had the exclusive rights to telecast these songs for about five to seven days post the music release. Sony is our programming partner and the channel has lined up various wrap around programmes on the movie.”

Patil adds that, MTV had lined up a series of promotional activities for Fanaa on the channel. “Tomorrow we will be telecasting an Aamir-Kajol show Fanaa for You, which will have the lead stars of Fanaa interviewing each other. Other innovations we have lined up include creating special MTV logos based on the Fanaa format,” he says.

The Fanaa for You show is in fact shared between Sony Entertainment Television and MTV. “In a unique exercise of media roadblock, Aamir and Kajol’s candid conversation Fanaa for You will be shown on 25 May at 8 pm. The stars will have freewheeling chat about themselves and their experience of working together for the much talked about movie Fanaa,” states a Sony release.

Interestingly, even NDTV has organised a special show with the two stars that airs on the sister channels NDTV India and NDTV 24×7 Thursday night at 8 pm and 8:30 pm respectively. It is worth noting that when Yash Raj released their blockbuster Bunty aur Babli last year, the film’s two leads Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee had appeared on the channel as news readers in the pre-release “stunt”.

Additionally, the Times Group’s FM network Radio Mirchi is also a part of Thursday’s 8 pm “simulcast” of the Fanaa preview. And the Net has not been left out either. The film’s preview will be web streamed on both Yahoo! and MSN.

FANAA FACES TOTAL GUJARAT BLACKOUT, MULTIPLEX NO SHOW IN REST OF COUNTRY

The big screen story however is entirely different. “Cinema Paradiso” it most certainly is not for the most powerful production house in the country as it squares up in an eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation with the top multiplex chains all over India.

That the stakes are enormously high is a given. And who blinks first will determine whether the status quo is maintained in the producer distributor dynamic or the rules are rewritten in favour of big film banners like Yash Raj.

Fanaa, which also marks the comeback of the much loved Kajol to the silver screen after a long break, is not only guaranteed (at least for the present) a politically engineered total blackout in the western Indian state of Gujarat, but also confronts a multiplex fadeout in the rest of the country.

The crux of the issue is on how the box office collections are to be shared. According to the head of one multiplex chain, as per current norms big banners get 48 per cent of the net collections by way of distributor’s share in the first week, 38 per cent in the second week and 30 per cent from the third week on. Yash Raj is however demanding 60 per cent, 50 per cent, 40 per cent for the first three weeks and 35 per cent from then on.

Though the matter was still at a stalemate at the time of filing this report, the head of the multiplex did point out that Yash Raj had come down a bit from its earlier stand and was ready to end the whole controversy if the exhibitors were willing to accept a 55:45 per cent revenue share in the first week.

Fanaa director Kunal Kohli remains confident that people will get to see the movie in multiplexes as well. “We are hopeful of reaching a solution. Discussions are still going on. There is scope for a positive outcome,” he says.

Kohli has been quoted earlier in media reports as saying: “We believe that we bring a certain value to film and that we should accordingly get that benefit. We have also conveyed to them that we are asking for better terms only if the film performs well at the box office. If it doesn’t, we are willing to go with the old terms.”

If the matter is not settled though, the movie will open mainly at all single-screen theatres across the country on 26 May.

    LAUNCH OF MERCHANDISE AROUND MOVIE

According to media reports, Yash Raj is launching its merchandising division with Fanaa. Three products related to the movie can be purchased. The first is a reflection cup-saucer set. The cup has a mirror finish which shows the reflection of Fanaa, when placed on the saucer. The second is a ceramic mug that has the autographed pictures of Aamir Khan and Kajol and the third is the chili pendant that Aamir Khan sports in the film.

Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee win Star’s Sabsey Favourite Kaun Awards 2006

May 7, 2006 : The wait is finally over… The verdict is out…The journey that started over three months ago has reached a triumphant conclusion.. Over 9 lakh fans from India & 23 nations across the globe have declared their Sabsey Favourites. And 7 winners have walked away with the only true measure of their popularity with the masses: the unique gold brick trophy of the Schwarzkopf Palette Sabsey Favourite Kaun Awards.

The battles were close in practically every category, with leads changing hands practically, every day of the 30 day national voting period. But at the end, when the dust settled, this is how the picture looked:

The Sabsey Favourite Hero category surprised no one by boiling down to a battle between the Khans – Shahrukh & Salman, with Shahrukh Khan winning almost by a hair’s breadth. It just proved once again that while Shahrukh is truly King Khan, the masses adoration for Salman remains undiminished despite all his recent travails. Bengali beauty Rani Mukerji was crowned Sabsey Favourite Heroine with competition from Aishwarya Rai.and Rani’s cousin Kajol. The results are testimony to the enduring popularity of the Mukerji cousins Rani has had no releases since almost a year, and Kajol has had none after Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2002. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s BLACK laid to rest all arguments about it being the favourite of only the classes with the masses declaring it a clear winner in the Sabsey Favourite Film category. In the Sabsey Favourite Naya Hero category the fight was really close between Kunal Kapoor and Kunal Khemu, with Kunal Kapoor coming through in the end. Doe eyed Vidya Balan won the Sabsey Favourite Nayi Heroine , pipping Katrina Kaif to the post. The Sabsey Favourite Comic Hero saw a hat trick as Paresh Rawal bagged the award for the third year in a row. The Sabsey Tez Sitara Award – the only award not voted in by fans, but where film industry experts pick out the rising star who has made the most strides in the last one year- went to John Abraham. He followed in the footsteps of Abhishek Bachchan who had won last year.

Last but not the least, an award that holds a special meaning for the lakhs of fans who voted in: The Sabsey Bada Fan Award: Mrs. Madhuri M. Madekar from Kalyan had participated in the Sabsey Bada Fan contest was crowned the Sabsey Bada Fan: the fan who voted the most number of times for the eventual winner.

Of course, it was not just about the awards. The performances were stunning as well. The night was filled with excitement as Trickbaby from London performed their megahits from Bluffmaster. What’s more, the video of the song ‘Nine Parts of Desire’, featuring Abhishek Bachchan, was unveiled for the first time, at the awards ceremony. Udita Goswami & Kunal Khemu rocked the event as they performed a medley of Himesh Reshammiya songs – remixed to reflect the various musical forms of the country. So don’t be surprised if you hear “Jhalak Dikhla Jaa” in Bharatnatyam beats or “Laagi Laagi” in Bhangra style.

Tanushree Dutta with Vinay Pathak & Suresh Menon of the Great Indian Comedy Show showed viewers what it would be like in 2006 when the all-time classics of Hindi cinema – Sholay, Amar Akbar Anthony, Don & more are remade. Hilarious skits on the theme with classic numbers from those films remixed made for compelling viewing. Fardeen Khan performed on the theme “The Many Moods of Fardeen”. The show stopper was Hrithik Roshan; in a thrilling performance tracking his journey from ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ to ‘Krrish’. This was also his first ever stage performance based on ‘Krrish’. The whole performance was specially choreographed by ace choreographer Ganesh Hegde. The Host with the Most Arshad Warsi and his spunky wife Maria Goretti hosted the show and had the audience in splits with their one liners. Viewers will certainly have a treat when Star Gold telecasts the event on the 14th of May at 8 pm.

And it is the viewers themselves who have chosen the nominees as well as the winners of Star Gold’s Schwarzkopf Palette Sabsey Favourite Kaun 2006- the only awards show were winners are honoured for their popularity and not performances in a particular film. While the Sabsey Favourite Kaun Election Express covered 45 towns & 24,000 kms to collect almost 1 lakh votes from fans to create the nomination lists, more than 8 Lakh votes came in through sms, the internet ( indya.com ) and televoting to choose the final winners. In all, almost 9 lakh votes from India as well as countries as far flung as Afghanistan, Peru, Bahrain, Tanzania, Mozambique, Bangladesh , and of course, USA, UK & the Middle East were cast to choose the eventual winners. Today it all came together for the grand finale.
