Havas Life Mumbai brings home old hand as managing director

MUMBAI: Havas Life Mumbai, the healthcare communications arm of Havas India, has tapped industry veteran Dorelle Kulkarni as its new managing director in a move that feels like a homecoming for both parties. Kulkarni, who previously spent a decade at what was then Sorento Healthcare (now Havas Life Mumbai), steps into the role vacated by Sangeeta Barde.

“Joining Havas Life Mumbai feels like a homecoming,” said Kulkarni, who brings 30 years of health and wellness marketing expertise to the table. “I am excited to collaborate with a team that shares my passion for innovation and excellence in healthcare communications.”

The appointment comes at a critical juncture for healthcare communications in India, which stands “at the forefront” of the global healthcare revolution, according to global chief client officer and CEO Havas Health Latam & APAC Charles Houdoux. Kulkarni will report directly to Houdoux while working closely with Havas India, SEA, and North Asia  group CEO Rana Barua.

Kulkarni’s has had  stints at Publicis Health and Lowe Lintas, where she managed blue-chip clients such as Abbott, GSK, Pfizer and Novartis. Her appointment is expected to bolster Havas Life Mumbai’s position as a key player in Havas’s global health and wellness network.

“Her deep industry expertise, strategic vision, and passion for innovation will be instrumental in shaping the next phase of growth,” said Barua, who also thanked outgoing chief Sangeeta Barde for her leadership.

Havas India has been on a tear recently, acquiring new clients across various sectors and winning prestigious awards, including being Great Place To Work Certified™ for three consecutive years. The network comprises 25 agencies across three verticals: Havas Health Network, Havas Creative Network and Havas Media Network, with offices in Mumbai, Gurugram, Bengaluru and other major Indian cities.

EMVIE Awards turn 25 with a grand celebration of advertising brilliance

MUMBAI- Mumbai’s advertising elite gathered under one roof as The Advertising Club marked a spectacular 25 years of the EMVIE Awards, widely regarded as the Oscars of the media world. The milestone edition, held at the Jio World Convention Centre on 28 March 2025, celebrated the finest in media strategy, innovation, and brand storytelling, honouring industry leaders who have redefined the advertising landscape.

Wavemaker India dominated the night, clinching the title of Best Media Agency of the Year with 665 points, while Mondelez India Foods Pvt. Ltd. took home Best Media Client of the Year with 380 points.

The EMVIE for Diversity, Equality & Inclusion (DE&I) was awarded to Interactive Avenues for their impactful campaign ‘Ek Macchhli Paani Mein Gayi’ for Chhanv Foundation, shedding light on the resilience of acid attack survivors.

The Young EMVIE of the Year went to Navneet Kabra from Wavemaker India, who crafted a winning hand for Cadbury 5 Star & Cadbury Celebrations with ‘The Joker Who Got Cadbury the Winning Hand’.

Havas India, group CEO for South East, and North Asia & and The Advertising Club, president Rana Barua, said, “As we celebrate 25 years of the EMVIES, it’s a moment to acknowledge how these awards have become a true reflection of our industry’s relentless pursuit of innovation, creativity, and excellence. • Havas India goes green with swanky eco-certification

Havas India goes green with swanky eco-certification

MUMBAI:  Havas India has polished its environmental halo after scooping the coveted ISO 14001:2015 certification, positioning itself as the advertising world’s unlikely eco-warrior in a notoriously wasteful industry.
The certification – which required a full year of scrutiny by the rather stern-faced British Standards Institution (BSI) – covers six agencies under the Havas umbrella, including its creative, media and design outfits across multiple locations.

“We believe the future of business lies in responsible and sustainable growth,” declared Havas India group chief executive SEA & North Asia Rana Barua presumably while sitting under an energy-efficient light bulb. “This milestone sets a new benchmark in the industry, reinforcing our position as the most future-ready advertising network in India.”

The rigorous certification process subjected the agency to a forensic examination of its environmental policies, carbon footprint and sustainable resource management – a far cry from the champagne-soaked, private-jet lifestyle traditionally associated with advertising bigwigs.

Havas India chief HR officer & Havas APAC chief inclusion officer Vandana Tilwani was quick to emphasise this wasn’t just a “tick-box exercise” – corporate speak for “we’re actually serious about this” – while hinting at even more ambitious green plans ahead.

Industry insiders suggest the eco-certification could give Havas a competitive edge when pitching to increasingly environmentally conscious clients, allowing them to smugly flaunt their green credentials while rivals desperately recycle their plastic water bottles in meetings.

“Reducing environmental impact not only contributes to a healthier planet, but also inspires stakeholder trust,” said BSI India managing director Theuns Kotze carefully avoiding mention of the mountains of foam board, vinyl banners and promotional material that advertising agencies typically churn out.

With this certification, Havas has thrown down the biodegradable gauntlet to competitors, suggesting that in tomorrow’s advertising world, the ability to save the planet might be just as important as the ability to sell fizzy drinks and luxury watches.

Leo Burnett, Mondelez, & Ogilvy grab top honours at Ad Club’s Effies 2024

MUMBAI: It was a noisy, raucous evening to say the least with agency executives screaming, blowing hard into their whistles, cheering as award after award was announced.  But the Ad Club Mumba’s Effie Awards also left behind a lot of happy faces at the Sea Lawns at the Taj Land’s End Hotel in Mumbai’s Bandra suburb  on the evening of 24 January .

    Team Ogilvy

The winner of the Grand Effie for 2024 was Leo Burnett India for their work on Acko General insurance. The agency along with McCann Erickson definitely deserved another award: that of being the loudest bunch in the evening.

The brand that walked away  with the client Effie of the year was Mondelez India which is the third consecutive year it has managed this feat. Kudos to it for creating memories for siblings, for special occasions with its confectioneries, chocolates  along with its agencies.

    Team mondelez

The agency of the year was shockingly grabbed by Ogilvy India. It looked to be nowhere in the running. But it made a last minute dash taking home enough golds and silvers towards the last batch of awards to win the prestigious accolade. All in all it was a glorious memorable evening for Ogilvy India’s creative god Piyush Pandey who hesitatingly walked towards the stage amidst the melee of young executives who made a run for the stage when master of ceremonies Brian Tellis announced it as the winning agency .

The highlight of the evening was a tribute to Bhaskar Da or Dr Bhaskar Das or BD which was offered by Ad Club president Rana Barua. What was great was the noisy crowd went completely silent when Rana spoke about what made Bhaskar Da so special and his long association with the Ad Club and the media industry as a whole. A short film by Pradyuman about Bhaskar Da with Tellis providing the voice over moved Rana to tears as he finished his tribute.

The Effie India awards stand out as a unique celebration of creativity, strategy, and effectiveness, recognised not just by industry peers but also by clients and academics. This year, the awards attracted 1,152 entries from 75 agencies, affirming Effie India’s position as the second-largest Effie globally in terms of participation.

With a rigorous judging process involving 486 jury members, including 254 marketing professionals, the evaluation took place across Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore, ensuring top-notch standards for this year’s campaigns.

The Advertising Club president and  Havas India group CEO Rana Barua remarked, “The Effie India awards exemplify the power of strategic creativity and impactful storytelling. With over 1,152 entries, this year continues to set benchmarks for the industry. Congratulations to all winners for their innovative campaigns that resonate deeply with audiences and drive measurable impact. These awards reflect the collaborative brilliance of our industry.”

Effie India awards chairperson Mitrajit Bhattacharya  noted, “The evolution of the Effie India awards over the past 23 years is incredible. The awards not only celebrate creativity but also showcase the collaborative efforts from 75 agencies and 486 experts on the jury. It’s inspiring to see the industry push boundaries with remarkable campaigns that deliver tangible outcomes. Thank you to the jury and participants for making this edition memorable.”

Effie India awards co-chairperson Pradeep Dwivedi  added, “The Effie India Awards have become a cornerstone of the advertising and marketing landscape, uniting the best minds in the business. Congratulations to all the winners for pushing the limits of creativity and strategy. Your work inspires and shapes the future of brand communication.”

Globally recognised, the Effie Awards honor brands, agencies, and marketers that excel in driving business growth and delivering impactful campaigns.

  • Tata Motors tops Havas CX India’s The X Index 2024 India report

Tata Motors tops Havas CX India’s The X Index 2024 India report

Mumbai: Indian customers have undergone an evolution in preferences that help differentiate brands for them. While brands that persist in operating under the previous paradigm have been caught off guard, some have already begun to capitalise on this recent shift, reveals the latest X Index India report by Havas CX India, the specialised customer experience vertical of Havas India which also includes Think Design & Ekino.

The Global X Index report, now in its sixth year, features a proprietary research tool that helps determine and measure the most critical factors in customer experience. The 2024 X Index surveyed 55,000 consumers in nine global markets (U.S., U.K., France, Mexico, India, Portugal, Spain, Brazil and Argentina) to evaluate the customer experience performance of 525 brands. This year, the X Index used 23 metrics across four key measures – functional, emotional, personal, and collective – to determine what criteria can create a compelling customer experience. It examined customer experience with brick-and-click brands, retailers that maintain brick-and-mortar stores in addition to selling online, and pure players, Internet-only retailers. The X Index also included a scorecard where consumers evaluated how well brands meet different experience touchpoints throughout the consumer journey, from social media to after-sale service.

This year, the report covers 50 brands from across nine categories. In addition, this year’s report also includes in-depth CX insights of five categories including BFSI, e-tail, automobile, beauty & healthcare, and hospitality.

The top ten brands in X Index 2024 India report are:

    1.    TATA Motors
    2.    Apple
    3.    TATA Cliq Luxury
    4.    Kia
    5.    Samsung
    6.    ITC
    7.    NEXA
    8.    Zara
    9.    JBL
    10.    TATA Cliq Palette

Havas CX Network global CEO David Shulman said, “At Havas CX, our mission has always been to stay ahead of the curve in understanding and delivering what customers truly value. The X Index 2024 – India Edition highlights a pivotal shift in customer expectations globally and in India, where efficiency, emotional engagement, and personalized experiences have become non-negotiable. This year’s findings across nine markets reaffirm that to remain competitive, brands must go beyond merely meeting expectations and strive to exceed them at every touchpoint. Together, we are setting new standards in customer experience, driving innovation, and creating lasting connections with consumers worldwide.”

Havas India, South-East Asia & North Asia (Japan & South Korea), group CEO Rana Barua said, “Over the past few years, Havas CX India has emerged as a key player within the Havas India ecosystem. Together with Think Design and Ekino, it forms a powerful network. In today’s rapidly evolving market, customer experience is crucial to brand success. When we launched X Index in India, we addressed a significant gap – brands needed data-driven insights to elevate their CX journeys. Four years on, the report has become an industry benchmark, a trendsetter, and a tool for forecasting market shifts. This year’s X Index continues to provide invaluable insights, preparing brands to be future-ready. Congratulations to all the brands featured.”

Havas CX India & Ekino India MD Prashant Tekwani said, “India’s CX landscape is rapidly evolving, and at Havas CX, we are at the forefront of this transformation. The X Index 2024 – India Edition reveals how Indian consumers are increasingly seeking personalized and emotionally resonant experiences. Our deep understanding of local nuances, combined with our global expertise, allows us to craft strategies that not only meet but exceed the expectations of Indian customers. As we continue to innovate, Havas CX India remains committed to delivering experiences that are as diverse and vibrant as the market we serve.”

    Key insights:

The X Index 2024 report reveals, there is a New CX Contract. Gone are the days when simply meeting expectations is sufficient. Businesses are now required to adopt a holistic approach that combines functionality, emotional engagement, and going above and beyond customers’ expectations.

India stands out for its heightened focus on creating personal experiences. While brand relationships remain important, a power shift is underway. Functional benefits have been nudged down a notch, replaced by a burning desire for recognition and personalised rewards. Indian consumers are demanding to be seen as individuals, not just wallets on legs. They want to partner with brands that value them and meaningfully show them ‘what’s in it for me?’

In the previous edition of The X Index, brands were making strides towards matching pre-pandemic expectation levels. However, customer priorities have shifted faster than brands anticipated, resulting in a drop in customer ratings across all 23 metrics in the 2024 edition. In light of this, it is clear that brands must get on board right away.

For Indians, the three defining elements of customer experience that drive satisfaction are:

    1.    Differentiated experiences continue to be paramount

The single most impactful element of CX, across players in India, was providing unique, novel or innovative experiences to customers. This is a pattern not seen in the other markets.

    2.    But you must provide great value in exchange for the data provided

Indians are comfortable sharing their data with the brands they associate with. However, there is a latent expectation that the brand respect their privacy and also provide personalized utility in exchange.

    3.    Efficiency and enjoyment are hygiene in all CX interactions

Bootstrapped CX simply doesn’t cut it anymore. With a keen focus on differentiation, brands are expected to be functionally and emotionally effective. Experiences that fail on the two counts of efficiency and pleasure, lose.

Like in the earlier iterations of the X Index barometer, Indians continue to value the relationships they form with brands. They continue to want brand interactions that make them feel valued as customers, but this now comes with an added layer – the expectation of a meaningful relationship that also gives back to the customer.

The X Index 2024 report sheds light on the three key principles for brands to adapt to the New CX Contract.

    1.    Efficiency is not a preference, it’s an expectation!

Indian consumers are clear: smooth and efficient interactions are the price of admission. Yes, the real thrill lies in brands that go beyond the expected, weaving delight and surprise into the journey. But efficiency forms the essential foundation of any brand interaction.

    2.    Make every interaction enjoyable!

India, a land steeped in tradition and relationships, thrives on emotional connections. Here, surprising customers with delightful experiences goes a long way. Technology, when used strategically, can be a powerful tool to deliver such experiences. This can range from personalised recommendations and targeted reward programs to interactive features that resonate with customers. This emotional resonance translates to instant gratification and fosters long-term loyalty in this highly contextual market.

    3.    Go above & beyond!

In India, there’s a love for everything large and elaborate, with a tendency to go above and beyond for any occasion. This extends to their expectations from brands. Brands that go the extra mile and adapt to the ‘culture of excess’ by offering premium experiences and exceeding expectations are likely to thrive in the Indian market.
