RGV to make modern-day Ramayan in Telugu

MUMBAI: While these days most filmmakers are turning to remake films from the other side of the country, Ram Gopal Varma has decided to make a modern-day Ramayan with his next bi-lingual (Telugu and Hindi) titled Ram Gopal Varma‘s Ramayanam.

"I have been listening to Ramayana since my childhood. I pondered many times why that story has been getting patrons for these many centuries. With that, now I got a thought to make Ramayana in my own style.

My Ramayana doesn‘t belong to Treta Yug but represents the present time. How it sounds if the characters in Ramayana live in our time here in Hyderabad? The answer is Ram Gopal Varma‘s Ramayanam," Varma said in a press statement.

Varma‘s story will see Dasarath Rao as owner of Ayodhya Group of Industries. His wife is Kousalya. Rao goes to Mumbai on a business work and there he happens to get close to Kaikeyi Agarwal. He marries her. He commits to Kaikeyi Agarwal in a weak moment that he would give away his company to Bharathkumar, their son.

Ram Shankar is the eldest son of Dasarath Rao and Kousalya. He never denies his father. Despite resistance from Ayodhya Group workers, he goes to run a sick unit. Lakshman Shankar, who is younger brother to Ram also, goes with him.

Lanka group of companies is the rival to Ayodhya Group. Ravan Raju is its owner. While his brother is Bheeshan Raju, Soorpana is his sister. "The conflict between these groups becomes my Ramayana," he said.

Earlier, Varma had made his own version of Sholay, titled Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag.

Ram Gopal Varma mulls Ab Tak Chhapan sequel

MUMBAI: Right now busy with his upcoming film Department, Ram Gopal Varma has evinced keen interest to make a sequel of his 2004 thriller Ab Tak Chhappan.

The story of Ab Tak Chhappan revolved around Inspector Sadhu Agashe played by Nana Patekar, from the Mumbai Encounter Squad, famous for having killed 56 people in police encounters.

While Ab Tak Chhappan was directed by Shimit Amin, RGV has roped in one of his old associates Sahil Saple because he felt Amin made the earlier film go overboard as per the production cost was concerned.

Reportedly, Varma drove down to Pune to convince Nana Patekar to star in the sequel to which Patekar agreed.

MUMBAI: Sanjay Dutt has evinced interest in producing Ram Gopal Varma‘s sequel to Bhoot.

Dutt is also interested in playing the lead to the film titled Bhhoooo.

The film will have Dutt play a character on whom the needle of suspicion falls. This character surfaces at every twist in the tale. He‘s almost like the main character in the film because without him the story cannot begin nor end.

This is not the first time Sanjay has expressed an interest to produce Varma‘s film. He had offered to back the on-the floor film Department, but then the director refused the offer as he had struck a deal with Viacom18 Motion Pictures.

Sunil Bohra to launch online music studio

MUMBAI: Sunil Bohra is in the news these days. After collaborating with Ram Gopal Varma on his recent film Not A Love Story,he had announced that he wou’d distribute the Freida Pinto-starrer Trishna in India.

Now, Bohra is set to launch an online music studio that will reveal to the producers the revenues earned from the music of their film in a transparent manner.

As opposed to a one-time music rights acquisition cost paid by the big music firms currently, the Studio will aim to promote film music albums at initial cost to the producer. And only after the music starts selling will the studio plan to split the revenue with the producer in 70:30 ratio, giving the major share to the producer.

BB Music Studio will be launched with the music of Bohra Bros upcoming film Sahib, Biwi aur Gangster that releases on 30 September.

Susairaj sends notice to Ram Gopal Varma

MUMBAI: In a notice through a Court, Maria Susairaj has asked Ram Gopal Varma to show her his soon-to-be released film, Not A Love Story, before releasing it.

Susairaj suspects that the film will portray her in bad light.

Not A Love Story is said to be inspired by the Neeraj Grover murder case in which Susairaj was one of the two prime accused. The former Kannada actress‘s lawyer in a statement has said that the film is based on his client and if that is true, her consent needs to be taken.

“We have asked him to show the film before the release. If he does not, we will file a suit and the court will decide whether the movie can be released or not,” said Susairaj ‘s lawyer Sherif Sheikh.

Meanwhile, Varma has refused to show the movie.”I will not show my film to Maria as I have repeatedly said that my film is just inspired by the incident and not completely based on her. There are so many differences in the film from the real life incident,” Varma said.

“My heroine is not a South Indian actress and her fiancee is not in Navy as in real case. Also, the film is just an interpretation of what could have happened and not a reporting on what actually happened. No one was there to know what the reality is. This is not her story and I am not showing the film to her,” he added.

Starring Mahie Gill, Deepak Dobriyal and Ajay Gehi in stellar roles, the film is scheduled to release on 19 August.

First Bengali film on underworld in offing

MUMBAI:For the first time in Bengali films, director Ringo is making a film on the underworld modus operandi in Kolkata by the name of System.

According to the director, the film will blaze the trail of a new genre in Tollywood where various layers of the dark underbelly of Kolkata – the world of crime where life is cheap and money is easy – is unraveled.

“System details the methodology, the three-four layers of the system from the very top down to the lowest rung and those having a stake in it including the undercover cops,” Ringo said.

The film will blaze the trail with the various layers of the dark underbelly of Kolkata.

The director visited the Presidency Jail in the city which houses many convicts, interacted with at least seven jailed gangsters. “I also spoke to some ace crime reporters here whom you might dub as the ‘local J Deys‘, having thorough knowledge of the local underworld,” he added.

The film will bring forth many episodes in the past which you can relate to but again zoom on the cerebral aspect of the incidents rather than the gory part, said the director who had earlier made films like Kranti, Jodi Ekdin and Risk.

Ringo, however, denied that the film was not another Company or Once Upon a Time in Mumbai.

“Every director‘s film – say Ram Gopal Varma‘s trilogy comprising Satya, Company and D – revolves around his own vision and study of the characters and situation. You can‘t equate System with them, but it is definitely a lot more psychological and unprecedented in Tollywood history,” Ringo averred.

The director also said that System is bound to be different from the Hindi gangster films since the Kolkata underworld does not follow the same methods or hierarchy as that of Mumbai.

The film is expected to be a trilogy with the director already planning a prequel and a sequel that would chart out the notoriety and ruthlessness of the underworld through the system.
