Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore. After the monumental success of Kho Kho at the Khelo India Youth Games 2019, Dabur India Ltd.’s Vice Chairman Amit Burman has decided to collaborate with the apex body of the sport – the KKFI to support the development of this league.

Speaking on the occasion, Hon’ble Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said, “Indigenous sports are the manifestation of the local genius and ethos. I am very happy that a league is being launched for Kho Kho.  Surely, this will go a long way in enhancing the popularity of this very Indian sport and will open new vistas for the players and the fans.  I congratulate and wish the Kho Kho Federation of India the best in their endeavors.”

Mr. Burman shared his vision for the league and said, “Ultimate Kho Kho will be a professionally structured league with eight participating franchise teams that will be owned by a mix of corporate houses and celebrities.  Each team will have a combination of players including Indian and international players from two age categories of under and above 18.”

Kho Kho Federation of IndiaI and Amit Burman have brought on board Tenzing Niyogi, former sports advisory leader at EY, as the CEO of the league.

“I always felt it is important to encourage other sports, especially those that bring communities together and promote active lifestyles to Indian youth. Kho Kho is the first ‘run and chase’ format sport and with the recent success of Kho Kho in Khelo India Games 2018 and 2019, it further signifies the massive fan following in states of Maharashtra, Punjab, Delhi, Kerela, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh to name a few. The biggest differentiator is – While other sports leagues are busy developing the grassroots program, Kho Kho is deeply entrenched in rural India across every state with school programs. Conglomerates, Business houses, Brands, Celebrity team owners will engage with fans from season one for the sheer recognition of the game”, said Mr. Tenzing Niyogi, CEO, Ultimate Kho Kho.

Present among the dignitaries were also Mr. Rajeev Mehta – Chairman, Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) & Secretary General, IOA, who expressed his delight at the launch event, “It is a moment of joy and pride for all of us to announce the launch of the Ultimate Kho Kho League. Our aim is to restore the glory this sport has seen in our country and we look forward to receiving the support from sports lovers from across the country.”

The Kho Kho Federation of India is working extensively, with support from the Indian Olympic Association, towards making the sport popular with the country’s youth.

The league will witness participation of key athletes from India and other Kho Kho playing nations.’ said Mr. Sudhanshu Mittal, President, KKFI & Vice President, IOA.

The first edition of Ultimate Kho Kho will feature eight teams named after the country’s prominent regions. There will be an initial draft of players where Kho Kho athletes from across the world, including England, South Korea, Republic of Iran, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, will be made part of the eight franchises. The teams will also have the opportunity to include U-18 players in their squad which will help develop a pool of young Kho Kho players in the country.

A Kho Kho match consists of 4 innings of 9 mins each and will be played on specially developed mats in state-of-the-art indoor stadiums. It will also have some minor tweaks in the format to make it more visually appealing for fans and television viewers. The 21-day event is set to have a double round-robin format which will see the eight teams heavily involved in competition through the season.

Kho Kho ranks as one of the most popular traditional sports in India, along with kabaddi. It is a modified form of 'Run Chase' which in its simplest form involves chasing and touching a person, requires speed and agility. It is considered one of the strongest tag-team sports.

  • 38th DD Free Dish e-auction on 11 February: Key highlights of revised policy

38th DD Free Dish e-auction on 11 February: Key highlights of revised policy

MUMBAI: The 38th DD Free Dish e-auction for 54 vacant MPEG-2 slots will be held from 11 February. The Prasar Bharati Board on Tuesday gave a green signal to e-auctioning of DTH slots on DD Free Dish. The public broadcaster will resume the allocation of slots based on a revised policy, confirmed Prasar Bharati (PB) CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati. He thanked the Board, MIB secretary Amit Khare and minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore for their support.

The e-auctioning of slots on DD Free Dish was arbitrarily called off in October 2017. Earlier, DD Free Dish would conduct the e-auction every couple of months to award vacant channel slots to private broadcasters. The last e-auction was held In July 2017.

With the pubcaster set to kick-start the much-awaited e-auctions, here are the key highlights of the revised policy:

    · The e-auctions will be based on a differential pricing to be determined by the genre (language) of channels. Private broadcasters desirous of carriage on DD Free Dish will have to declare the same to be eligible to bid in e-auctions.

    · To lower the entry barrier for genres (languages) that are currently under-represented on DD Free Dish the differential pricing for slots is split into five disparate buckets as opposed to the 2 buckets based on which e-auctions were previously held.

    · Different genres (languages) have been grouped within these five buckets with differential reserve pricing for slots in respective buckets.

    · To promote the new DD Free Dish authorized set top boxes, the new policy also envisages invitational pricing for channels to also take up MPEG4 slots in addition to the existing MPEG2 slots.

    · The new policy also makes it attractive for channels from a cash flow standpoint through better payment terms. This will ease the burden on channels while lowering the entry barrier for channels.

According to the PB CEO, a key consideration factored in by the new policy was to increase the diversity of content available on DD Free Dish and to expand its reach across India especially within the non-Hindi speaking states.

The government-owned DTH platform has had a good run since its launch and is now desired beyond rural areas as well. According to industry experts, the DTH platform now has close to 30 mn subscribers.

While there are numerous advantages of Free Dish, some private broadcasters feel it offer a threat to distribution platform operators (DPOs).

MIB’s Rathore signals liberalised regime for online media

MUMBAI: Hardly 24 hours into his job and minister of state (independent charge) in the Information and Broadcasting ministry (MIB) Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore is saying things that could make him the industry’s and more specifically the independent media crowd’s darling.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Rathore emphasised that media has to opt for self-regulation and the government has no plans to regulate news portals and media websites.

He said most publications and TV channels are already self-regulating at various levels, first at the reporting journalist’s level and then at the editor’s desk. He added that this was a model that the government was more than happy to continue with and support wholeheartedly.

He clarified that media had misunderstood reports that it was setting up a committee to frame rules to regulate news portals and media news websites.

The prime minister is very clear that the media in our country is one of the very important pillars of democracy and they have to self-regulate, Rathore highlighted.

He said Prasar Bharati will be strengthened and high priority would be given to better and informative programmes.

He also pointed that “it is about a collective responsibility that media becomes the voice of the people, whether it is Prasar Bharati or private network or channel. We will work in this direction.”

Just yesterday, the baton was handed over from senior minister Smriti Irani to junior Rathore. He now has independent charge while she heads over to textiles. He has been in the ministry for the last four years as state minister and has finally got full command.

Smriti Irani moved out of MIB as Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore gets independent charge

MUMBAI: There’s change at the top at the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB).  Smriti Irani has been moved out of her post as mininster and kept solely in charge of the textiles ministry. Replacing her is Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore – her minister of state – who has now been given independent charge of the MIB.

That things were afoot in the ministry was sounded out earlier this week.  Irani cancelled her trip to Cannes where a strong Indian delegation is attending the film festival. Earlier it was announced that she would be leading an eight member panel to the famed French Riviera cinema confab.

Rathore – a former sportsman and army man – has been a permanent fixture in the ministry for the past four years as a state minister. He has patiently waited on the sidelines over that period and has finally earned his stripes getting independent charge of the MIB as the government gears up for the coming national elections in 2019.

Irani had, a couple of days ago, delivered the Sardar Patel Memorial Lecture 2017 themed ‘Model of Broadcast: Landscape for Democracies’ during the course of which she had called the broadcast news landscape as a “spectator sport” in which the rush for audience ratings has reduced everything to “headlines competing with hashtags” in the wake of social media explosion taking place in the country that has provided a new pathway for information dissemination.

The media has been speculating about the reasons for her departure. Among them: the recent National Film Awards run in with president’s office about his presenting the citations to winners; and her views on fake news and journalists, and wanting to bring in curbs on online media. Sources close to the government rubbish these allegations as canards, stating that Irani has been a loyal party person and she steps into – and out of any – role that the high command asks her get into.

The Narendra Modi led government also announced other changes last evening. Finance minister Arun Jaitley- who has been ailing and was successfully operated for his kidney ailment on Monday – has been replaced by railway minister Piyush Goyal, who has been given its additional charge. That is until Jaitley gets back into action.

  • AI, VR, IoT in focus on day 2 of Goafest

AI, VR, IoT in focus on day 2 of Goafest

GOA: No media and advertising conference is today complete without a session or at least a passing reference to artificial intelligence, virtual reality, big data or the latest to join the league – internet of things (IoT). Such was also the case at day two of Goafest.

The day began with Kaleidoko digital futurist Jonathan Tavss and transformational strategist Dean Donaldson’s enthralling session. The duo spoke about ideas and new technology and the need for a future of personalisation. Donaldson mentioned that there are 8.3 billion connected devices today which is more than the number of people on the planet. This means there will be 500 billion devices by 2030; which is an average of 60 devices per person. He also noted that brands today latch on to every new technology but hyper-connectivity is equal to over-saturation. Overloaded with choices, consumers have gone from actually consuming to just sampling or scrolling. This is where targeting plays its part and brands need to make a note of that.

Tavss then went on to talk about blockchain for brands and how generation alpha is never going to use cash and they are all going to have an imaginary best friend named Alexa. He also talked about how robots are taking over the world and will become the second biggest purchase for us by 2030 after a home. The duo noted that there is a need for rebirth in media; where rebirth is equal to blockchain + predictive + AI.

The future is going to be about connections between digital and biological. There’s change in the offing like we have never seen before and AI is going to take over. Research says that humans are more likely to chat via text than with humans. Tavss then went on to say that by 2025, we might have a little chip and intel inside our minds and advertising will be “Genomedia”. What does that mean, you ask? Well, it’s when brands will start targeting based on genes and geno-targeted advertising is going to become a reality.

From AI, the session moved to the next hot topic – IoT where SharpEnd Founder Cameron Worth minced no words and spoke about a world where data comes first. He spoke about how his team works on bringing brands and IoT together. “Today, the role of brands is shifting. Brands must respond to the shift in landscape and platforms. New platforms need new specialists”. He concluded the session by stating that brands are adopting tech innovation at scale already and consumers are connected; you should be too.

    public://Sidharth_Malhotra.jpg

The day also saw Bollywood actor Siddharth Malhotra reminisce about his most memorable experiences in advertising with ads such as ‘Doodh Doodh’ by Amul, ‘Jalebi’ by Dhara and ‘Girl on the field’ by Cadbury. In his opinion, in-film advertising works brilliantly when done correctly.

public://Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Day 2 of Goafest 2018.jpg

Next up was an intense session in an on-air interview style discussion between current union minister of state for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Times Now managing editor of politics Navika Kumar. The session focussed on whether brand Modi was still strong enough for the upcoming 2019 elections. From scams to unemployment and economic growth to sports, a wide spectrum of topics was discussed and debated upon that may impact the 2019 union elections.

Rathore, being from a sports background, shared an experience of how China leads in supporting sporting centres. He said that in India, parents never visit the PT teacher when they go for parent-teacher meetings when in fact it is this person who teaches children valuable life lessons about not giving up and teamwork.

Sony Max, ESPN air PWL 2 live as Haryana Hammers dominate Mumbai Maharathi

MUMBAI: A dominating performance by Haryana Hammers saw them register their first victory against defending champions Mumbai Maharathi on the opening day of the Pro Wrestling League Season 2 at the K D Jadhav Indoor Stadium here today. Present at the occasion were Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The second season’s live telecast can be seen on Sony Max and Sony ESPN. You can catch the online streaming of the event on the Sony website as well.

Mumbai captain Erica Wiebe won the toss and blocked the 70kg Men’s category while Haryana chose to block the 48kg Women’s category. The first bout was fought between Rajneesh (Haryana Hammers) and Vikas Kumar (Mumbai Maharathi) in the 65 kg Men’s category. Rajneesh executed some skillful moves as he combined attack with defence cleverly to prevail over Vikas 7-2.

The second bout for the 75 kg Women’s category was won by Mumbai, as they drew level with Haryana. Canadian Erica Wiebe, who won Gold in the 2016 Rio Olympics, led from the front as Haryana’s Kiran proved to be the weaker opponent. Erica won the bout by technical superiority as Kiran failed to score a single point compared to the Canadian’s 16.

Haryana came back strongly in the third bout, as Russian Abdusalam Gadisov employed single leg attack and ankle hold takedowns to effectively score against his opponent, Ukraine’s Pavlo Oliinyk. Haryana secured a 2-1 lead by virtue of this victory.

The fourth bout was contested in the 53 kg Women’s category as grapplers Sofia Mattsson from Sweden and India’s Lalita Sehrawat played an aggressive game. Although Lalita kept searching for points, Sofia who had earned a Bronze in the 2016 Olympics, prevailed over her and eventually won by Pin Fall.

Even as Mumbai conceded a 1-3 lead in the tie, they tried to stage a comeback as Azerbaijan-born Jabrayil Hasanov outclassed his opponent Sumit Sehrawat, clinching the bout in Mumbai’s favour by virtue of technical superiority.

Haryana Hammers took full advantage of the crucial sixth bout as Marwa Amri defeated Mumbai Maharathi’s Sarita 5-0. The Tunisian grappler showed full supremacy on the mat, as her technical acumen proved to be too good for Sarita. The 2016 Rio Olympics Bronze medalist clinched the tie with this victory, as Haryana took an unassailable 4-2 lead.

The final bout of the tie saw some explosive action with Mumbai’s Rahul Aware completely dominating over his opponent Sandeep Tomar from Haryana. Although Sandeep had an early 3-point advantage, Rahul came from behind to display a series of well-executed takedowns to win the bout 14-5. Rahul’s brilliant effort went in vain, as Haryana won the game by a 4-3 margin.

Speaking after the match, a delighted Haryana Hammers Co-Owner Golden Behl said: ” I believe Rahul Aware and Sandeep Tomar was the most exciting match of the days but of course we were looking forward to Sandeep’s win. But in the end, it’s a game and things change within fraction of seconds. We came with a target of 5-2 win but we are surely not disappointed with a 4-3 victory on the first day of PWL.”

Haryana Hammers player Abdusalam Gadisov said: “I believe our team is a great mix of some great Indian and international wrestlers and the performance on the first day has been great so far. Look forward to some more exciting matches in the coming days.
