Wieden+Kennedy turns Kyoorius’ initiative into an industry wake-up call

Mumbai: This year, Kyoorius Creative Awards has introduced a special initiative to empower younger, growing agencies. For the first time, participants whose entries don’t make it past the first round of judging have a special incentive – they will get back 50 per cent of their entry fee, per entry. This is also the year when newer kinds of participation are being encouraged, be it for regional or for pharma.

Their creative partner, Wieden+Kennedy India, felt this was an apt opportunity to take this brief to the next level. They’ve taken Kyoorius’s initiative of ‘giving something back’ to an industry-level clarion call, urging every member from adland to give back more to the industry that has made them.

“Kyoorius has grown beyond an award, it has become the industry’s voice, that’s why this year’s campaign isn’t just about the award, it’s about addressing the uncomfortable realities in advertising and igniting the change it needs.” Wieden+Kennedy India chief creative officer Santosh Padhi (Paddy).

“When I heard of Paddy’s brainchild, ‘Give Back’, it struck a chord with me. I know the world of Indian advertising is going through its toughest challenges and if we all don’t take ownership of our problems, if we don’t introspect and evolve, then who will?” shared Kyoorius founder CEO Rajesh Kejriwal.

W+K Mumbai ECD Yogesh Rijhwani added “Our creative team found a way to express each hard-hitting message through some stunning typography, which has become the visual voice of the campaign. We enjoyed the love, especially for craft, in the comments section of these posts.”

The campaign started on 21 Feb and has had more than 30 posts since. The creatives will continue to be shared till the actual day of the event.

W+K partnered with Nirvana’s Rajiv Rao for a funnier take on Give Back video, featuring prominent ad landers and marketing names.

  • Zoozoo man moves on from Ogilvy – a note from Piyush Pandey

MUMBAI: Ogilvy South Asia executive chairman and creative director Piyush Pandey writes:

It is not at all easy for me, as I inform you that Rajiv Rao moves on from Ogilvy India to become a film maker. It has been Rajiv’s dream to make films for the last four years. I have nothing but a deep sense of gratitude to Rajiv, that he respected my request to stay on to help make a better and stronger Ogilvy. There are not too many in this business who make a sacrifice of this magnitude.

Rajiv joined Ogilvy in 1999 with his partner V. Mahesh. And shortly thereafter, they started blazing new trails.

In 2002, I had the joy of partnering him as a copywriter to create the legendary ‘Second hand smoke kills’ campaign for Cancer Patients Aid Association. This campaign won India’s first double Gold at Cannes.

Whenever the Orange/Hutch/Vodafone history is written, Rajiv Rao’s name will feature in golden letters. Every piece of work on these brands has Rajiv’s personal stamp on it.

The ‘silent killer’, Rajiv has always displayed phenomenal leadership skills without saying very much. Along with Mahesh, he led Ogilvy Bangalore from 2003 to 2006 and gave the office a renewed energy. In 2009 Rajiv and Abhijit Avasthi took on the role of National Creative Directors and raised the bar up many notches of creativity at Ogilvy India. And since 2015, Rajiv has played the role alone and compensated for his partner.

Loved and admired by one and all in the industry, nationally and internationally, Rajiv is one of the finest creative people and the gentlest giant I have met in my life.

I am sure Rajiv will be no less a film maker than the creative leader he has been. We will stay connected in more ways than one.

Meanwhile, Rajiv will continue as Ogilvy India’s National Creative Leader till Sonal takes over and a smooth transition is complete.

I will refrain from being personal and just say, “Thank you Rajiv. You are a true son of Ogilvy India. Keep the flag flying.”

Kyoorius founder and CEO Rajesh Kejriwal said, “Our jury members represent the best of advertising and digital today. They raise the bar for the quality of work we expect to be entered and also bring experience judging international awards shows like D&AD.”

“We want work to be judged on its merit, irrespective of language or cultural reference, thus a diverse jury is essential,” Kejriwal added.

As per the Kyoorius and D&AD’s judging criteria, voting is always done in private, never by a show of hands. All jury members will gather from 29 April to 2 May 2015 in Mumbai to review, discuss and elect the best of the best over an intensive three-day session, which will be open to the public.

  • Abhijit Avasthi bids adieu to Ogilvy

Abhijit Avasthi bids adieu to Ogilvy

MUMBAI: The national creative director of Ogilvy, Abhijit Avasthi, has decided to move on from the agency after almost 15 years.

Known as one of the gems of Piyush Pandey, Avasthi has been instrumental in some of the memorable ad campaigns for brands like Coca Cola, Cadbury, Fevicol etc.

“Advertising has taught and exposed me a lot of things. Taking these learnings, I want to move on to do something which I love over and above advertising,” says Avasthi and adds, “It would have been unfair on both me and Ogilvy if I cannot give my 100 per cent to what I love doing.”

“Both Piyush and Rajiv (Rao) have been aware of my intentions for a while now and have been very supportive about it,” he says while adding that his exit was planned well so that things don’t fall out of place at the agency.

With an engineering background, Avasthi started his advertising career in 1997 at Enterprise Nexus as a trainee writer. After working there for two years, he went on to join Ogilvy as creative supervisor. In 2002, he was then made creative director and in 2005 was elevated as group creative director.

“I’m taking a break to figure out what should be my next move,” he informs.

A memo regarding his exit was sent out on 28 October 2014 to the employees. “He is currently serving his notice period and will be associated with the agency till end of November,” says a source within the company.

    The memo reads:

After a stunning performance as National Creative Director Ogilvy India, Kinu has opted for a creative twist in his professional story.  He has chosen to go independent and would also be pursuing some of his other interests.  Consequently, he will give up his responsibilities as N.C.D. as of 30 November 2014.  However, Ogilvy India is the first to associate with Kinu in his new endeavour and he will be our Creative Consultant on a few key projects.  Kinu will also partner Rajiv and me in developing and implementing a robust on-going creative training programme for Ogilvy India.

Kinu’s contribution to our creative reputation, first as a senior creative team member and then as N.C.D. with Rajiv Rao, has resulted in the new age creative revolution at Ogilvy.  He has helped build great brands, client relationships and a super strong creative culture in our organisation.  His reputation extends beyond India and he is respected as one of India’s most talented creative professionals.

Rajiv Rao will take full charge of the National Creative responsibilities and will discuss the creative responsibilities of current creative leaders over the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, we salute Kinu for his immense contributions and wish him the very best in his next inning.

  • Portfolio Night’s ‘All Star’ winner was Mayank Bhayana

Portfolio Night’s ‘All Star’ winner was Mayank Bhayana

MUMBAI: For the ones who want to create a mark in the creative world, 21 May was the night. Lowe Lintas and Partners hosted the Indian twelfth edition of the world’s largest advertising portfolio review-cum-recruitment event- Portfolio Night.

The event that was conducted simultaneously in 20 plus cities across the world sought to unite the advertising and design communities in every continent for a common purpose – to identify young and upcoming talent and mentor them on the opportunities that lay ahead.

Mayank Bhayana from Bangalore bagged the Portfolio Night – ‘All Star’ title from India and will be flown to New York to take part in a week-long creative challenge on a specific brief.

The evening saw an impressive turnout of 75 young creative aspirants who presented their work to top 25 creative directors of the country.

Sharing his views on the over-whelming candidate participation and turnout, Lowe Lintas and Partners CEO Joseph George said, “With advertising arguably having lost its monopoly over being the coolest job to have, it was critical that as an industry we kept looking at ways to spot talent who are not just promising but fans of the profession. It was also very gratifying that all the creative stars from across the industry agreed to participate without any hesitation whatsoever. With the kind of response that we received from the candidates as well as the creative directors, it demonstrates the industry’s shared priority of ensuring that this profession remains exciting and attractive to young talent.”

Lowe Lintas and Partners NCD Amer Jaleel said, “It was like the IPL of advertising. It was the place where raw ‘quickies’ and talented ‘big-hitters’ got spotted. There were many from the industry who were on a keen lookout for rising stars of the night. Seeing the enormous energy being exuded by the participants, I wished I too were playing under the floodlights!”

The agency’s NCD Arun Iyer added, “The event was a great opportunity for Lowe Lintas to give back to the community and the industry of advertising. The way the young creative guys came in and engaged the attention span of the CDs for over three hours was worth the whole effort. They not only got a sense of what the real world is all about, but also received enough encouragement and opportunities from a widely appreciated platform such as Portfolio Night.”

Extending his gratitude to the numerous clients who made it a point to support the event, George said, “It was heartening to see the speed with which the clients wanted to participate with us on Portfolio Night. We are thankful to them for realizing a shared passion of spotting young and aspiring talent and giving them the opportunity to see their dreams come true.”

Portfolio Night is a platform for young creative aspirants to have their work sampled by at least three top creative directors from the industry in a single evening. While it helps youngsters gain constructive feedback and guidance on their skill sets, the top Creative Directors get to spot potential talent.

For the review process, aspirants were divided into three batches and each aspirant got the opportunity to get their portfolio reviewed by three CDs. Each CD met three candidates individually for 15 minutes and reviewed their work, ideas and offered them valuable feedback.

The creative heads who reviewed the work at the event included Ogilvy & Mather executive chairman and creative director south Asia Piyush Pandey, Ogilvy & Mather NCDs Abhijit Avasthi & Rajiv Rao, Publicis CCO Bobby Pawar, Josy Paul, BBDO chairman & CCO Josy Paul, FCB Ulka NCD K S Chakravarty (Chax),  TBWA India Nation head – art Deepak Singh, TBWA India CCO Parixit Bhattacharya, Scarecrow Communication ECD Kapil Tammal, Grey Worldwide NCD Malvika Mehra, McCann Worldgroup NCD Pradyumna Chauhan, Scarecrow Communication, founder/director Raghu Bhat,  , Cartwheel Creative Consultancy owner Ramki D Ramkrishna, JWT NCD Tista Sen, Underdog founder Vikram Gaikwad, Contract India NCD Ashish Chakravarty.

The candidate will be chosen from the final set of nominees shortlisted from the various individual stages.

  • ZooZoos as TV stars this IPL!

ZooZoos as TV stars this IPL!

MUMBAI: Those waiting with bated breath for the Indian Premiere League (IPL) have one more reason to hoot. The funny eggheads of the balloon bellies, gibberish and idiosyncratic ways will be back and how!

Vodafone’s ZooZoos, which first appeared during IPL 2009, will take charge for the fifth time this season. This time round, they will be seen participating in television shows of different hues even as they peddle the mobile services provider’s value-added products.

The latest campaign, also created by Ogilvy & Mather, comprises 10 TVCs depicting the ZooZoos in a creative and engaging manner; each promoting a unique Vodafone product/service.

O&M national creative director Rajiv Rao, who, along with his team, started working on the creatives in March this year, said, “Television has become a part of popular culture so we thought of using it as the background. However, it is a challenge for the whole team to keep reinventing ZooZoos and whether we succeed in conveying the brand’s message through these films.”

The first two TVCs releasing on 16 April revolve around two product propositions of Vodafone – Choose your Number and Chhota Credit – and feature a reality TV show and a quiz show, respectively.

Will this result in a ZooZoo overkill? “The street hawkers started selling ZooZoo merchandises at least a month back. This is proof enough of how much people love these characters. On the digital front, the ZooZoos have millions of fans and since they come once a year, I think it’s quite the opposite of overdose,” said Rao.

According to Vodafone India brand communications and insights senior vice president, Ronita Mitra, “Like every year, this year too, Vodafone India has planned a high decibel 360-degree campaign around IPL. The ZooZoos are back during IPL 2014 to communicate Vodafone’s differentiated customer experience that offers unique products and services to make the customer’s life simple and convenient.”

Mitra added that apart from TV, Vodafone’s campaign during IPL 2014 would be supported by OOH, digital and other mediums.

  • Vodafone launches second leg of ‘Made for You’ campaign

MUMBAI: Vodafone has launched the second leg of its 121 ‘Made For you‘ campaign, created by Ogilvy & Mather.

Directed by O&M NCD Rajiv Rao, the ad film is produced by Good Morning Films.

According to the company, the first phase established that one can get unique offers of their choice by dialling 121 from their Vodafone mobiles.

“We now extend the campaign offering multiple products. Idea was to showcase the unique usage of certain types of people (heavy talktime, internet or STD users) to communicate the types of offers that are available when you call 121 before you recharge. Full talktime idea was developed keeping in mind a popular guy in college with a need to talk for longer durations. STD and Internet films also take a similar approach reflecting a slice from our day-to-day life and people we meet,” the company said in a statement.

The 121 campaign positioned 121 portal as the one stop shop to get plans/offers customized (Made for You) on the basis of your current usage. The 121 extension campaign brings to life in a direct manner the product possibilities that 121 offers.

The 121 campaign extension will be six week long with three films bringing to life the product propositions on Full talktime, STD & Data. There will be a high decibel 360 media plan using TV, Radio, Print, Outdoor, on-ground, digital and online plan.
