Life OK promises sci-fi twist with new show -Bahu Hamari Rajni_Kant

MUMBAI: Hindi general entrainment channel (GEC) Life OK rings in 2016 with a new comedy drama titled Bahu Hamari Rajni_Kant which is based around the familiar saas bahu concept but with a science fiction twist to it. Conceptualised over a span of six months, the show will be produced by Sonali Jaffar and Aamir Jaffar of Full House Media.

“After over six months of planning, research and execution, we are finally ready with this refreshing new concept to hit television screens. Don’t be wary with the name ‘bahu’ in the title. This show is anything but a typical saas bahu series. I can’t reveal more but I would add that it is quite the opposite,” says Sonali.

Though channel hasn’t confirmed the exact launch date for the show, Sonali informs Indiantelevision.com of the two possibilities. “We haven’t locked down on any dates so far but the pilot episode will mostly likely air from either 8 February or 15 February,” she says.

As of now, the time slot too remains undecided for the show, though a source close to the development shared that the channel is considering a serious reshuffling of its programming slots to make room for this newcomer in the early prime time band of 8 pm. As the channel’s 7.30 pm show Zindagi Abhi Baaki Hai Mere Ghost goes off air from 7 February, it is rumoured to be replaced by the 8 pm time slot occupant Jaane Kya Hoga Rama Re, thereby leaving the band open for Bahu Hamari Rajni_Kant

A weekday entertainer airing from Monday to Friday, Bahu Hamari Rajni_Kan will depict a dysfunctional modern family where women are hardly at home. In fact, unlike the typical mother and daughter-in-law dynamics one is used to seeing on television, the mother-in-law encourages her daughters-in-law to step out and do something in life.

“I would say the entire family are the main characters for the show and hence it is a complete family entertainer where audiences from all demographies will have their share of interest. There are several elements that will draw in men and kids to the show as well,” Sonali shares on the show’s target audience.

According to sources, w an ensemble cast consisting of new and old actors, the estimated per episode production cost of the show is in the range of Rs 9  – 10 lakh.

Given the science fiction element in the plot, the show is expected to incur a high cost, although the same reason will also ensure that the channel can target several electronic brands as potential advertisers, as it will showcase several gadgets and electronics. According to a source close to the development, the sitcom has already roped in Amazon.in and Panasonic as advertisers, though the details pertaining to the deal remain undisclosed.

While Sonali refused to divulge the particulars of the plot, a source informs that it is inspired by yesteryears’ children show Small Wonder with a completely new treatment.

The story will revolve around how a scientist is forced to marry his own brainchild ‘Rajni’ the robot under hilarious circumstances and the robot protagonist’s interactions with the entire family.

It is not the first time that a local show had borrowed the Small Wonder concept for a sitcom on Indian television. In fact Star had earlier attempted the format in their primary GEC channel Star Plus with Karishma Ka Karishma, which was produced by Sunil Doshi of Alliance Media & Entertainment. At a time when several GECs are revisiting the saas-bahu formula to keep the rural audience appeased, one can wonder if this challenging new concept will help the channel in the race for ratings.

  • Superstar Rajinikanth is back on Zee Cinema with super hit ‘Lingaa’

Superstar Rajinikanth is back on Zee Cinema with super hit ‘Lingaa’

MUMBAI: It’s going to be  an action packed Sunday as Zee Cinema, the world’s biggest theatre for Hindi movies, brings to its viewers superstar Rajinikanth’s ultimate blockbuster movie ‘Lingaa’ on 30th August, 9 pm.   Lingaa also marks the debut of Sonakshi Sinha in the South and it was Rajinikanth’s first ever birthday release.

The film begins with the murder of a government official inspecting a dam, and then the action cuts to Lingaa (Rajinikanth), a small-time criminal, who is in prison with his cohorts (Santhanam, Karunakaran and co). Lakshmi (Anushka), a TV reporter, helps him to get out on bail to return to his village, Solaiyur and re-open the temple that his grandfather, Raja Lingeswaran (Rajinikanth), had built. At first, Lingaa refuses because he is angry at his ancestor as he left his father to die penniless by donating his wealth to the masses.

However, he ends up going to Solaiyur when he learns of his grandfather’s sacrifice. Lingeswaran had resigned his job as a collector when he realized that the British will not let him build the dam that will benefit the people of Solaiyur. Being an extremely wealthy Maharaja, who has studied civil engineering in Oxford, he used his own money to fund the project and planned the construction himself, rallying the people of the village to his cause. However, an egotistical British collector used every trick in the book — money, caste, and power- to thwart him at every step. Lingeswaran had given his entire wealth to the collector for the sake of completing the dam. Years later, Naga Bhushan (Jagapathi Babu), a corrupt MP is trying to weaken the dam’s structure for a kickback, and Lingaa returns to the village to protect his grandfather’s legacy.

Will Raja Lingeswaran’s descendant Lingaa be able to open the Shiva temple?

Catch superstar Rajinikanth in a double role by tuning into ‘Lingaa’ on Zee Cinema, this Sunday 30th August, at 9 pm.

Zee Cinema to premiere ‘Lingaa’ and ‘Khoobsurat’

MUMBAI: Zee Cinema is all set to premiere two movies this coming weekend.

On 31 May, Zee Cinema will premiere Rajinikanth’s Lingaa in Hindi at 9 pm, whereas Zee Cinema HD will premiere the Fawad Khan – Sonam Kapoor starrer Khoobsurat at 9 pm.

Zee Hndi Movie Channels deputy business head Ruchir Tiwari said, “With the recent revamp of Zee Cinema, our aim has been to air the fresh and varied movies on our channel. And when we talk about entertainment who better than Superstar Rajinikanth. Lingaa is full of Rajini’s magic and pure treat for his fans. On the other hand, Khoobsurat is a young refreshing romantic story. I am certain that the audiences are going to enjoy watching these movies in the comfort of their homes on a lazy Sunday night.”

Lingaa marks the debut of Sonakshi Sinha in the South and it was also Rajinikanth’s first ever birthday release. The film, which also boasts double role by Rajinikanth, revolves around a small-time thief who reforms after learning about the role his grandfather played in building a village dam that transformed many lives.

On the other hand, Khoobsurat narrates the story of a chirpy and rule breaker physiotherapist Milli (Sonam Kapoor) who falls in love with a Rajput prince Vikram (Fawad Khan).

  • Vikram’s ‘I’ opens to a tremendous response

    Vikram’s ‘I’ opens to a tremendous response

MUMBAI: Director Shankar’s much hyped project starring Vikram, has opened to tremendous response from the audience. I, which released on 14 January, 2015, opened to Rs 34.74 crores worldwide and also stars Amy Jackson, Upen Patel, Suresh Gopi and Santhanam.

I was also released in various parts of North India. In Andhra Pradesh and Nizam, the Telugu dubbed version of the film has also set the cash registers ringing with Rs 10.45 crore at the box office.

While the film has been garnering mixed reviews, it has managed to rake in Rs 9.62 crore at the box office.

However if we compare first day collections, I is still far behind Rajinikanth’s Lingaa (Rs 12.8 crore) and Vijay’s Kaththi (Rs 12.5 crore) in the Tamil Nadu box office.

  • ‘Tevar’ collects Rs 21.7 crore in opening weekend

‘Tevar’ collects Rs 21.7 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: The solo release of the week, ‘Tevar’ suffered due to its outdated theme as the film is a remake of a 2003 Telugu original, ‘Ukkadu’. The action, the film’s mainstay, is oft repeated over the past few years. The film also lacks in romance as well as chemistry between the lead pair – Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha.

‘Tevar’ opened to an average response and the collections dropped in the following shows as unfavourable reports emerged. The film has collected a mere Rs 21.7 crore in its opening weekend.

On the other hand, the Rajkumar Hirani directed ‘PK’ starring Aamir Khan continued its dream run at the box office. Making the most of Christmas holidays and poor oppositions for three weeks, the movie crossed the Rs 300 crore mark. The film has collected Rs 42.1 crore in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 311.7 crore.

‘Take It Easy’, a film aimed at children, performed poorly at the box office, having collected only Rs 35 lakh in its first week.

‘Mumbai Can Dance Saala’ had a disastrous first week with collection figures barely crossing Rs 10 lakh mark.

Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Ugly’ has managed to put together Rs 2.3 crore for its second week taking its two week total to Rs 7.8 crore.

‘Linga’ (dubbed) starring superstar Rajinikanth and Sonakshi Sinha has fared below average. The original Tamil movie has also suffered at the box office and not much was expected from the Hindi dubbed version as the South legend has little following in the Hindi market.

Ajay Devgn’s ‘Action Jackson’ has added another Rs 10 lakh in its fifth week to take its five week tally to Rs 58.9 crore.

MUMBAI:  Bollywood’s reigning badshaah, Shah Rukh Khan will be following Rajinikanth’s footsteps with his title role in a graphic novel entitled, Atharva – The Origin.

Khan, who is seen in a rather mystical avatar and will now achieve another milestone with the innovative concept of Atharva – The Origin. Redefining visual effects with films like Ra.One, Khan is one of the few actors who experiments a lot with technology and VFX.

The trailer of Atharva – The Origin has been released by Virzu Studios and features a CG SRK with ripped muscles and ancient armours, standing on a patch of rocky mountains in what seems to be the prehistoric age.  Just like how Rajinikanth’s Kochadaiiyaan created buzz in the south, fans of King Khan are also excited to see SRK’s animated avatar.

The story, which is an adaptation of Ramesh Tamilmani’s graphic novel by the same name, traces the journey of a prospective King. The project is headed by Vel Mohan and contains beautiful illustrations by Ramesh Acharya.

  • Rajinikanth’s clone jams traffic in Bengaluru on Kochadaiiyaan release day

Rajinikanth’s clone jams traffic in Bengaluru on Kochadaiiyaan release day

BENGALURU: It is said that more people watch Sun TV here than they do Udaya TV- there are probably more Tamil speaking people in the Ulsoor Lake area than any other part of Bengaluru. With the Tamil Sangam at Ulsoor Lake, every second shop manned (or womaned) by a Tamilian, a visitor may often mistake this part of ‘Namma Bengaluru’ (Our Bangalore) with any other city in Tamil Nadu. There is one theatre that is the ultimate destination of most Tamil film aficionados in the area – Lavyana.

Every new Tamil movie release has a festive air around. Huge cutouts of the hero are placed everywhere in the vicinity of the theatre and it is a common sight to see some prominent leader of the area arrive with huge garlands that cost more than a month’s wages for most, perform a pooja with the traditional oil lamp and the umpteen number of incense stick. And if the lead actor is a prominent one like Rajinikanth, well he too finds a place with the gods and is worshipped like a deity. This is followed by the bursting of crackers and a general confusion for office gores stuck in a traffic jam.

All that, except for the last, has not happened at the time of filing of this report at Lavyana. The opening of the movie KochadaiiyaanThe Legend has been sedate here until now, but there is no dearth of people waiting in queues to buy the first day first show ticket to spend a few hours with their hero, their idol and God with a capital G.

What caused a mini traffic jam was the arrival of a Rajni clone dressed in the traditional white lungi and displaying more gold than a jewellery shop in Shivajinagar to the theatre. Immediately a crowd collected around the man as soon as he dismounted from his ‘oh so very long car’. Mobile phones from the cheap Chinese smuggled ones to the most expensive iphones and Samsung Galaxy models were whipped out and people sprang to the chance of getting clicked with a human image of their GOD! People rushed to shake the man’s hand, get photographed with him,  while traffic slowed, stopped, crawled, stopped during the 10-15 minutes that the supposed Rajni was there for.

How the movie will fare and whether the people concerned have other plans for a big bang is another matter altogether, only time will tell.
