Aradhana is Rajesh Khanna’s most watched film online

MUMBAI: Like it always happens, a celebrity‘s past is dissected after his demise. Soon after his death, web video service iStream.com conducted an analysis of the popularity of Rajesh Khanna‘ films.

In the analysis, it was found that Aradhana and Haathi Mere Saathi emerged as the most popular films among the online users in the month of July.

They were followed by his other popular films like Joroo Ka Ghulam, Avishkaar, Namak Haram, Apna Desh , Mere Jeevan Saathi, Sachaa Jhutha, Dil Daulat Duniya and Amar Deep.

The analysis is based on over 100,000 online views of over 50 Rajesh Khanna movies on the website last month, according to the company‘s statement.

  • Yesteryear superstar Rajesh Khanna’s death swings audiences away from GECs to news channels

MUMBAI: Four decades after Rajesh Khanna ruled over Indian hearts with his romantic brand of movies, the forgotten and lonely superstar warmed up Indian audiences again as he breathed his last at his iconic Aashirwad residence on 18 July.

Hindi news channels, who covered extensively his death and funeral, lured audiences across demographics to remind them of an era that will never come again. Young audiences who had never seen him before glued to the TV to know more about Bollywood‘s first superstar who created history by giving 21 box-office hits in the six-year period between 1969 and 1974.

Hindi TV news genre nearly doubled their viewership in the week ended 21 July, making it one of those rare occasions when they ate into the audiences of Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs) who reign over primetime television in India day in and day out with their popular soaps and non-fiction content.

The ratings for that week went through a big change. The GRPs (gross rating points) of Hindi news channels rose to 126, from 66 a week earlier. This coincided with the dip in Hindi GEC viewership, trimming by 75 points, according to TAM data (HSM, C&S, 4+) provided by the channels.

Hindi news channels aired a special string of programmes on Khanna who had a fan following in the ‘70s that has not been matched by any Bollywood superstar ever. The man who swung hearts with movies like Anand, Aradhana, Bawarchi and Amar Prem had an almost secluded life later, after a high-profile marriage with Dimple Kapadia that did not last long. The channels showed his life, his movies, his megalomaniac trait and played his romantic songs to allow audiences to go back to history.

Several leading shows on Hindi GECs lost audience share. The ‘Khanna‘ week, in fact, saw a drop in overall TV viewing.

Within the GEC genre, Sony Entertainment Television (Set) returned to the No. 2 position after a gap of two months. Set added six GRPs in a week that saw the other leading channels lose theirs. Set’s fiction property Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, the storyline of which took a five-year leap two weeks ago, saw a rise in ratings after a long time. With an average TVR of 4.2, the show has become the second most watched on the Hindi GECs. Star Plus’ Diya Aur Baati Hum leads with a 5.8 TVR.

Though continuing to lead the genre, Star Plus shed 21 points to end the week with 254 GRPs. Its leading shows like Sathiya Saath Nibhana, Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behena Hai and Iss Pyaar Ko kyaa Naam Dun fell below the 3 TVR-mark.

Meanwhile, Zee TV, which was on a ratings upswing due to shows like Fear Files and DID Lil Masters, lost maximum number of GRPs during the week. The channel shed 32 GRPs as its fiction property Pavitra Rishta and flagship dance reality show DID Lil Masters lost viewership.

Fear Files, which had opened with 3.8 TVR and was registering an average 3.5+ TVR, dropped to 2.6 TVR. Zee TV ended the week with 221 GRPs and at the third spot among the Hindi GECs.

Colors too saw a loss of 16 GRPs to close the week with 214 GRPs. Its leading show, Balika Vadhu, fell to a TVR of 3.8.

Like Set, its sister channel Sab also added six points to register 129 GRPs, while Life OK lost 12 GRPs to record 101 GRPs.

Sahara One with 42 GRPs (last week 39) remained at the bottom of the heap.

  • Amitabh Bachchan pays tribute to Rajesh Khanna

MUMBAI: Amitabh Bachchan, who co-starred with the late Rajesh Khanna in Anand and Namak Haraam, has written a moving tribute to the departed star on his blog:

    A lowdown:

I first saw him in a film magazine, perhaps Filmfare. He was the winner of the Filmfare-Madhuri Talent Contest, a contest that I had applied to in the coming year and been rejected. His film ‘Aradhana‘ was my next meeting with him, at the Rivoli Theatre in Connaught Place in New Delhi, which my Mother took me along to see. The packed audience and their reactions to this young handsome man was impermeable.

The early, or shall I say preliminary rejection of my attempt to compete in the Filmfare-Madhuri contest, had made me leave my settled job in Calcutta. I had come away home to seek the possibilities of joining the Industry in some other way. But one look at Rajesh Khanna made me realize that with people like him around, there would be little chance or opportunity for me, in this new profession !

When I got my call for Saat Hindustani I travelled to Bombay, got the role and went back to start its shooting. My friendship with Anwar Ali, brought me in the vicinity of his illustrious brother Mehmood. Mehmood bhaijaan‘s presence in the industry and his own very large standing, gave me an opportunity to get an informal meet at one of the shootings of Rajesh Khanna. It was a very formal handshake and that was it – a routine for him, an honor for me !

Soon after, I was being cast opposite him in Anand. This was like a miracle, God‘s own blessing and one that gave me ‘reverse respect‘. The moment that anyone came to know that I was working with Rajesh Khanna, my importance grew. And I gloated in its wake. During the breaks in the shooting of the film I would return to Delhi and gleefully describe the scenes and dialogues of the film, as also its music to all that I met – and I met many during that time ! There were no CD‘s then, just the spooled tapes, and getting Hrishida to part with one such for me, was an exercise in futility. But I was able to get one and ‘kahin dur jab din dhal jaae ..‘ played endlessly on my very repair stricken tape recorder.

He was simple and quiet. Would sit in the front seat of his modest Herald, driven by his man-friday Kabir. He would attract many visitors on the set and was continuously surrounded by them – Hrishi da permitting ! The frenzy and the following he garnered was a sight to behold. In the ‘70 era, his fans came from Spain to meet him – a most unheard of occurrence then. In his trade mark Rajesh Khanna kurta pyjama, he almost always looked the boy next door, one that girls would want to take home to Mother. But amidst all this there was a quiet elegance within him. In his boyish plainness there was something that was regal in his demeanor. It was the magnet that attracted others to him – who at times were almost servile to him in nature.

My observation above, does not do justice to what I wish to explain. But then, that itself could be that unspoken accomplishment of his.

I visited his residence ‘Aashirwad‘ just once when we were working together, to wish him on his birthday, only to realize when I reached there, that I had come in a day earlier. He was magnanimous enough to understand my awkwardness and asked me to stay back; then after a while driving me to Shakti Samanta‘s ( who made ‘Aaradhana‘ and many other films with him, and ‘Great Gambler‘ and ‘Barsaat ki ek Raat‘ with me ) house to join him for dinner! The next day on his birthday, he hosted me again. Many many years later he had called me to his office to seek the possibility of working for his production, which did not materialize. Then of course my last meeting with him was when IIFA decorated him with a Lifetime Achievement Award and asked me to present it. His gracious words for me still resound.

When the shooting of ‘Anand‘ began at Mohan Studios, Hrishida‘s favourite locale, now a concrete housing colony, the one moment that always worried me was, that last scene when I break down after his death and urge him emotionally to speak ! Not being able to find a method in my own very limited acting experience, I sought the help of Mehmood bhai, in who‘s house I was living with his brother Anwar Ali. And I still remember what he told me –

    He said, “just think Amitabh, R- a- j- e- s- h K- h- a- n- n- a is dead !! and you will get everything right”.

It was not so much a tutorial in acting that he expounded. It was an exalted acknowledgement of Rajesh Khanna‘s presence and position in the psyche of the nation, that he was drawing my attention to.

That is how Rajesh Khanna was looked upon from the day he started till his last breath. Times changed, people changed, circumstances changed, but Rajesh Khanna always remained his quiet, elegant, regal self !

As I sat at his home this afternoon, to pay my respects, soon after learning of his passing away, a close functionary of his, came up to me and told me in a choked voice what his last words were –

“Time ho gaya hai ! Pack Up !”

  • Rajesh Khanna passes away

MUMBAI: Rajesh Khanna, who mouthed ‘Zindagi kaisi hai paheli hai, kabhi toh hasaye kabhi ye rulaye…‘ in Anand, left for his heavenly abode this afternoon at the age of 70. His last breath came at his residence Aashirwad.

He breathed his last in the presence of his wife Dimple Kapadia, daughters Rinkie and Twinkle, son-in-law Akshay Kumar, grand children and close relatives.

The veteran actor, who has been battling a prolonged illness for a long time, finally gave in to his ailment. Just yesterday, the actor was discharged from the Lilavati Hospital. But late at night, due to extreme weakness and low blood pressure, he was kept on ventilator.

The actor‘s condition had been deteriorating since April when he stopped eating and had complained of weakness. He was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital twice in the past month.

Incidentally, the actor who shot to stardom in the 1960s, was the first ‘superstar‘ of Indian cinema.

Meanwhile, the entire film industry is shocked at the passing away of Khanna. In fact, the film industry has come to a standstill with as many as three events marked for the day cancelled.

Not only the film industry but the entire country is in deep shock on the star‘s demise. People from all walks of life are talking about the departed soul, his dialogues, his songs, his leading ladies and friends etc.

In a condolence message to the stars eldest daughter Twinkle Khanna, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said, ” I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of your father Shri Rajesh Khanna.

“Khanna was a celebrated artiste who entertained millions of Indians with his performance in a variety of films. His legacy will live on in the form of the numerous entertaining and acclaimed films that he leaves behind. The powerful roles he essayed in classics like Anand, Aradhana, Kati Patnag and Amar Prem, stand testimony to his artistic genius.”

Rajesh Khanna was not new to politics as he was a Congress member of the Parlaiment (Lok Sabha) in the early nineties. “In the passing away of the Rajesh Khanna, the Indian film industry has lost one of its most successful and most charming heroes. On this sad occasion, I convey my heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and Khanna‘s countless fans and admirers. I pray for peace of the departed soul,” the message added.

Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Ambika Soni has also condoled the death of Khanna. In her condolence message to the members of the bereaved family, Soni said, “Very few actors can match the charisma, stardom and popularity that Rajesh Khanna enjoyed. His era initiated the wave of Superstardom in the Indian film industry, a concept which was unknown till then. Rajesh Khanna gave Indian cinema a whiff of fresh air by projecting the essence of goodness and romance in the various characters that he portrayed. His films provided us melodious music and haunting melodies which became a part of the generational change of the 1970s. The Indian film industry has lost one of its iconic personalities who gave a new identity to the male protagonist in films. Shri Rajesh Khanna was a much admired colleague in our party. We will all miss him. I pray to god to give necessary strength to his family to overcome the crisis.”

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “With his unique persona, Rajesh Khanna ji made a special and unforgettable place in the hearts of Indians! May his soul rest in peace.”

Producer Ashim Samanta, son of the late Shakti Samanta said, “Lost a family member. It‘s a huge loss to the film industry. He was a fabulous actor and a great human being. He was very close to us since 1962. My father was very attached to him; it‘s a sad day for all of us.”

“I knew that his condition was extremely critical, but I never knew that he would go off so soon,” said Marathi actor Ramesh Deo, who acted with Khanna in Anand.

Haroon Rashid finishes film in one take

MUMBAI: After Roop Tera Mastana… from Aradhana which was supposedly canned in a single take on Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore by Shakti Samanta, filmmakers have often tried to do such sort of achievement.

The latest is debutant director Haroon Rashid who has completed a feature film of two hours and twenty minutes length in just one take without a single cut. Rashid claims that the film, titled One Shot Fear Without A Cut, is qualified as the world‘s longest one-take film and has been sent to the Guinness book of world records for the same.

The film’s story revolves around the TRP game of media and how a team of a particular television channel gets trapped in this race and desires to get fame and recognition overnight. This greed of theirs takes them to a haunted place, uninhabited for several years. The crux of the film follows hereon.

Rashid who wrote and directed the film had to double up as the cinematographer as well after many DOPs (director of photography) deserted him midway after a few days of rehearsal.

On the challenges, Rashid said, “We shot a full-length film with songs, dance, real-time action and chase scenes spread across seven kilometers on actual locations. We were very accurate in what we did because if one would have gone wrong we would have had to do it all over again.”

To make sure nothing went wrong, Rashid rehearsed with his crew for a few months. “We rehearsed for almost five months before shooting the film and we got it right in the seventh or eighth final take,” he pointed out.

The film is a magnificent presentation of a very well synchronized team-work. Covering four locations over a distance of seven kilometers, starting from the sea to the road, road to the jungle and jungle to the final building, again all in one shot was no easy task.”It took a lot of courage, passion, trust and faith to achieve our goal, “observed Rashid.

  • Rajesh Khanna makes his TVC debut in Havells’ new campaign

MUMBAI: Bollywood yesteryears superstar Rajesh Khanna is making his debut television commercial. Electrical and power distribution equipment manufacturer Havells India Limited unveiled its new ad campaign, ‘Havells Fans are Forever‘, featuring Khanna in the TVC.

Havells is known to portray unique concepts through its out of the box advertising with campaigns like ‘Shock Laga‘ and ‘Wires that don‘t catch fire‘. The latest campaign named ‘Fans are Forever‘ is another extension of this strategy. The TVC has been shot by R Balki.

The commercial makes use of the fact that Khanna attracted
unprecedented mass hysteria and a frenzied fan following in his heydays. It showcases him going down memory lane, remembering how his fans used to follow him everywhere when he was a superstar. However there is a twist at the end of the TVC which goes on to reveal that he certainly does have a lot of fans, but those are Havells fans!

Havells (India) joint managing director Anil Gupta said, “It is a constant endeavour to come out with clutter breaking ad campaigns and create the desired impact so as to reach out to audience at large. As far as Rajesh Khanna is concerned, he was undoubtedly the best fit for our campaign – Fans are Forever. Even after 30 or 40 odd years, people of not only our generation but by the younger generation as well, remember him as one of the biggest stars of his time. He will be revered for ever just like our Havells Fans!”

Balki chairman and chief creative officer Lowe Lintas India said, “This new campaign gave us a great opportunity to capture the essence of the brand with sheer simplicity. When the ad was being conceived, we could think of none other than Rajesh Khanna himself who had the maximum fan following…almost legendary and who still commands a great deal of respect. Needless to say that it was a huge achievement to direct Mr. Khanna in his first ever commercial.”

Khanna added, “To be approached after so many years is indeed a great honour for me and I am delighted to reconnect with my fans once again. Shooting after a gap of so many years has definitely brought back fond memories and I feel that not a lot has changed at all. It‘s good to be back.”

The commercials will be on air during the ongoing IPL and will also be extended to print, internet and in-shop POSM.
