    Mumbai: CNN-IBN and IBN 7 will present a line up of special programming for Valentine’s Day.

    The season finale of Minus 30 will also be a Valentine’s special. The show will feature host Paras Tomar probing people both famous and ordinary trying to answer that multi million-dollar question – What is love?

    IBN 7 on the other hand has come up with a programme series especially for the occasion called ‘Kambhakt Ishq’, which involves short, realistic and highly dramatic stories surrounding different couples. The series’ grand finale on February 14th at 7 pm will bring together these narratives in a half hour episode to create that ultimate Valentine’s special!

    MUMBAI: As part of 60 years of Indian Independence celebrations, CNN-IBN is instituting an annual award CNN-IBN Indian of the Year. This will recognise the Indians whose contribution to the country in 2006 has strengthened the social foundation and helped build brand India in the process. The objective is to create the highest, non-governmental, civilian award conferred on an individual. Additionally, it will provide both a national and international platform to recognise, showcase and revere Indian achievements across different walks of life.

    The awards will salute the best and the most dynamic Indian icons across six main categories: Politics, business, entertainment, sports, public service and NRI. Votes from the public and the electoral college, both holding equal weightage, will then decide the most superlative candidate to be the Indian of the Year!

    The Judiciary council in concurrence with the TV 18 Editorial Group will undertake the preliminary step of generating a list of prospective nominees for each category. The Council is an elite club of five Padma awardees: Padma Shri Geet Sethi, six times World’s Billards Champion; Padma Vibhushan Soli Sorabjee, former Attorney General of India; Padma Bhushan Nandan Nilekani, CEO of Infosys Technologies; Padma Bhushan Deepak Parekh, Chairman of HDFC and Padma Shri Kiran Bedi, a Magsaysay award recipient.

    Electing winners for each group will be a three-tier process involving the Judiciary Council, the Electoral College and the citizens of India. The Electoral College, composed of 250 eminent citizens, each recognised in their respective fields, will vote for their chosen aspirant(s). The process of Vox Populi will be conducted simultaneously, through two means: ibnlive.com – for online casting of the citizen’s franchise and 2622 – voting through people’s mobile phones. Both, the Electoral College and the Indian public will be assigned 50 per cent of the vote weightage in determining winners from within every category.

    The Indian of the Year besides being bestowed with this exalted title will also receive a trophy provided by Swarovski CCB at an event held in Delhi on 6 February.

    IBN Lokmat to launch by March; TG ‘aspirational’ audience

    NEW DELHI: IBN Lokmat, the Marathi news channel from the GBN stable, is all set to launch latest by March.

    The channel is currently in its trial run and will launch as soon as the new facility in Vikhroli is ready and once the ongoing 360-degree training by US experts concludes, Nikhil Wagle, editorial director tells indiantelevision.com.

    Wagle insists that the network created by IBN is unprecedented in regional journalism and includes 13 bureaux spread across the state, with 100 stringers, allowing “us to reach the last man in the village”.

    Wagle says he visited hundreds of journalism schools in the state and 2,000 students were interviewed; hence the editorial staff is representative of the entire state, not Mumbai-centric.

    Lokmat is the biggest newspaper chain with multiple editions in the state, and the new company, IBN Lokmat News Pvt Ltd, owns the channel, but is a part of the GBN group, and hence, committed to the same standards of journalism as CNN IBN, Wagle explains.

    Asked whether infotainment or even crude videos (of the kind seen on Hindi news channels) will also find a place on the channel, Wagle denies it, arguing that historically, the Maharashtrian news consumer has been more tuned to social values than those from the Hindi heartland.

    “That sort of news won’t be accepted here,” he says, adding that in any case, the company is committed to hard news that is of relevance to people.

    Wagle reveals that the core content for IBN Lokmat would be driven by the aspirational aspects of Maharashtra’s economy today.

    Sixty-four per cent of Maharashtra lives in urban areas, the highest in the country after Tamil Nadu, he says.

    “Every small town is trying to become a metro and larger towns are aspiring to higher status and this is the real issue today, so this aspirational aspect will be widely covered, along with traditional hard core news.”

    With malls and cineplexes coming up, businesses expanding and the youth lifestyle changing rapidly, urbanisation and its challenges would also be a core issue on the channel.

    Asked whether they would also include programming content like astrology, which has recently surfaced in IBN 7, GBN’s Hindi news channel, Wagle says, “There is no place for astrology in a news channel and the Marathi viewer is not interested. When they watch a news channel, they want deep-rooted investigative news.”

    There will be rural coverage as well, but Wagle says it will not just be sensational news of farmer suicides.

    “There are different angles to showing something, and we are not chasing TRPs, so when we cover farmer suicides, we shall show all the angles that exist, not just the sensational aspect,” he said.

    Rajdeep Sardesai, editor-in-chief of CNN IBN, says that the top layer of editors are the cream of Marathi journalism and will be totally driven by hard core journalism, saying, “Nikhil Wagle is no less a hard core journalist than any in the country, and so are most of the others, who all have a minimum of 15 years of journalism behind them.”

    IBN7 appoints Times Now’s Sanjay Singh as senior editor

    MUMBAI: IBN7 has roped in Times Now’s deputy news editor Sanjay Singh as the senior editor. In his new role, he will head IBN 7’s Mumbai bureau along with the additional responsibility of the entertainment desk.

    Singh has been credited as the man who authored Telgi Scam – Reporter Ki Diary the only written document on the Telgi scam. He was recently honoured with the International Press Institute Award by the President of India, according to a statement.

    He has held a number of senior positions in leading news channels like NDTV, and Zee News in the past.

    Announcing the appointment IBN7 managing editor Ashutosh said, “Sanjay is an old hand at journalism with great editorial experience. I am confident that his energy and commitment will further strengthen our operations and his leadership will take our news coverage to a different level.”

    NEW DELHI: Director-general of All India Radio, Brijeshwar Singh, has been given additional charge of looking after pubcaster Prasar Bharati as its chief executive.

    He succeeds Navin Kumar whose term as DG Doordarshan and acting CEO of Prasar Bharati ended on 23 August 2006.
    A 1975 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, Singh has been heading All India Radio since February 2004.

    Under his stewardship, All India Radio clocked an impressive 70 per cent revenue growth during 2005-06, even while keeping intact its focus on public service programming.

    AIR earned Rs 2.7 billion in revenue during 2005-06.

    Singh’s keen interest in classical music enabled AIR to bring out quality CDs under the brand name Akashvani Sangeet, deriving rare content from the archives of All India Radio.

    An active participant in broadcasting issues, Singh is also the
    vice-president of the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association.

    Prasar Bharati is not having a regular CEO since K S Sarma stepped down on June 30, 2006 on attaining the age of super annuation.

    A regular CEO will be appointed by a three-member high level committee headed by the Vice President of India.
    MANDLOI ACTING DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF DD

    Meanwhile, LD Mandloi, the senior most deputy director-general of Doordarshan, has been named as the officiating director-general (DG) of the television pubcaster.

    Mandloi, a programming side person, unlike his bureaucrat predecessors, will look after day-to-day functioning of Doordarshan till a full-time DG is appointed.

    According to sources in the government — despite autonomy through an Act of Parliament, Prasar Bharati still remains an extension of the establishment — 17 applications have been received till now for the post of Doordarshan DG.

    However, a regular DG of DD can only be selected once a full-time CEO of Prasar Bharati is in place.

    After former information and broadcasting secretary Bhaskar Ghose in the late 1980s and early 1990s, DD has seldom had a full-time DG.

    Ghose, father-in-law of CNN-IBN chief editor Rajdeep Sardesai, presently is the chief executive of Lok Sabha TV, an initiative of the Speaker of Lower House of Parliament. The channel is dedicated to airing proceedings of the Lower House, apart from other serious programming.

    NEW DELHI: What had been earlier put off has finally happened. Channel7 has been rechristened IBN7 and has been sporting the new name from India’s Independence Day, 15 August.
    This has been done to integrate the synergies between English language CNN IBN and the Hindi Channel7, in which the Television Eighteen Group bought controlling stake earlier this year.

    The on-air look of IBN7, including the channel ID, programme stings, on-air graphics, will give the channel a contemporary look and feel. The logo of IBN 7 in red, black and white reflects the brand identity and corporate philosophy of Global Broadcast Network (GBN), which is in sync with CNN IBN, an official statement said.

    Eight months ago, the Television Eighteen-controlled GBN had presented CNN IBN, which over the period has become a leading English news channel, driven by the spirit of Whatever it Takes.

    Now this spirit extends to IBN 7, which would embark on the principle of delivering khabar, har keemat par or Whatever it Takes, the statement added.

    Highlighting the philosophy behind this move CNN IBN and IBN7 chief editor Rajdeep Sardesai was quoted in the statement as saying, “We are delighted to launch IBN 7, our 24-hour Hindi news channel for the benefit of the Hindi news viewers. With the introduction of IBN 7, GBN attempts to expand its reach in India.”

    He added: “We are confident that CNN-IBN and IBN 7 together will bring to the discerning viewers a holistic approach to news delivery.”

    According to IBN 7 managing editor Ashutosh, the channel will present multi-genre news programming package for the Hindi news viewers and the focus will be on building a channel that broadcasts news as it happens, when it happens, wherever it happens.

    It was 19 January 2006 that Indiantelevision.com first broke the news that GBN, owners of English news channel CNN IBN, were in talks with Jagran TV, parent company of Channel7, aimed at making the Hindi news channel a part of the GBN stable through a joint venture.

    CNN-IBN and Channel 7 line up special shows for Independence day

    MUMBAI: CNN-IBN and Channel 7 has lined-up a special package to celebrate Independence Day with slew of programmes. The package includes shows In August Country, State of the Nation, India Rocks, Shahrukh Unplugged, August Kranti and Sorry Sir.

    Starting 14 August, CNN-IBN will showcase a half hour special In August Country at 8:30 pm and the same will air on 15 August. The viewers can also participate in an interactive quiz based on every story aired during In August Country.

    Channel 7 will feature August Kranti at 7:30 pm on 15 August, where the channels will revisit historic places like Chori Chora, Jalianwala Bagh, Dandi and many more where the Indian freedom struggle reached great heights and won the battle for independence.

    State of the Nation is another independence week special on the anvil, which will track the state of the nation, based on an exhaustive pan India poll conducted by CSDS, spanning across 20 states with over 24,000 touch points, according to an official release. The opinion will be presented in a four episode special India’s Best CM, Dietary Habits, Terrorism in India and Youth of the city from 12 to 15 August at 9:30 pm, 10:00 pm, 10:00 pm and 9:30 pm respectively on CNN-IBN.

    The two channel brings forth a musical special India Rocks, which present Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma, Rahul Sharma, Shabana Azmi, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shubha Mudgal, Salman Ahmad (Pakistani singer), Raghav Sachar, Mohit Chauhan and many more on 15 August at 1:30 pm on CNN-IBN and at 9:30 pm on Channel7. This show will also feature a song by a terminally ill child with “make a wish” composed and sung by Zubeen Garg.

    CNN-IBN will feature a live-on-air Independence day kids quiz on 15 August. This inter-school zonal (north, south, east and east) live quiz contest will hunt the best ‘kid quiz brain’ in the country. Anchored by Vidhya Shankar Aiyar, the morning segments will air the elimination rounds and the finals will be aired at 1:00 pm.

    The channel will also air Shahrukh Unplugged where Rajeev Masand catches up with the star to understand what ‘Independence’ means to him on the day at 2:30 pm.

    Sorry Sir on Channel 7 will be a satire on hamare neta, by the best poets and performers like Sagar Khayyami Adil Lucknowi, Popular Meeruthi, Rahat Indori, Jemini Haryanwi on 12 August at 9:30 pm and also Apne Apne Laloo, which is a mimicry show put up by the Great Indian Laughter Champions on the railway minister Laloo Prasad Yadav, which will air in short capsules throughout the Independence Day.

    CNN-IBN to air lifestyle show ‘Living It Up’

    MUMBAI: News Broadcaster CNN-IBN is expanding its feature programme line-up with a new weekly show exploring the art of healthy living. The half-hour weekly show Living It Up, anchored by Jotica Sehgal, will kick off on 8 July at 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm.

    Living It Up will have a reality segment The Weight Loss Challenge wherein four dieticians will team up with four overweight people and over seven weeks they will be challenged to loose as much weight. The team, which looses the most weight, will be the winning team. To add some excitement, participants and viewers will be given voting powers, according to an official release.
