    Rajdeep Sardesai re-elected as Editors Guild prez, to campaign against ‘paid’ news

    NEW DELHI: IBN Network Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai was today re-elected President of the Editors Guild of India for a second term at the elections held here.

    Coomi Kapoor, a senior journalist who is also a columnist with The Indian Express Group, has been elected General Secretary.

    Kapoor succeeds Resident Editor in Delhi for ‘the Week’, K Sachidananda Murthy, who told indiantelevision.com that he had already done three terms and therefore felt the norm of two terms should be followed. India TV COO Rohit Bansal was re-elected Treasurer for another term.

    Sardesai made a clarion call driven by a concerted campaign in the first quarter of 2010 on multiple platforms against the growing menace of paid news masquerading as genuine news/editorial comment.

    This will form part of the Resolution being issued tomorrow that will attempt to summarize the discussion held today on the subject of paid news. Details of the campaign will be spelt out.

    CNN IBN launches next gen show ‘Y Not’

    MUMBAI: English news channel CNN IBN is launching a new show, Y Not, inspired by the new India starting today.

    Y Not will motivate and provide a forum to young India to question and discuss the issues that matter to them, claims the channel. The show will be aired every Friday at 8.30 pm.

    Says IBN18 Network editor-in-chief Rajdeep Sardesai, “Meeting the needs of the next generation will require a change at several levels including a change in thinking and mindset of the society. This is possible only when we listen to and have a hand on the pulse of the youth. Y Not is one such initiative dedicated to voicing the needs of young India.”

    Y Not, as per the channel, will be the platform for the youth to voice their opinions through debates on current issues like moral policing, drug abuse, education, racism, women security, ragging and gay rights.

    The show will pick a current issue and scrutinize it by opinionated young people. It will also showcase young achievers who are creators of their own learnings from all lengths of life from across the country. It will break taboos on the topics that are normally brushed under and will be current in content, questioning and analysing in its slant and irreverent in its attitude and style.

    Additionally, Y Not will also guide on the hippest, coolest and the latest in all the zones. The show will also have youth perform spoofs, videos and songs to express themselves.

    CNN IBN launches special series on drought

    MUMBAI: CNN IBN is launching a special series covering the drought-affected areas across the nation, the worst in recent times.

    The channel, through its series Spectre of Drought, will try and analyse the impact of the drought throughout the week in the news wheel.

    The news correspondents will travel to all the major states like Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

    The series will attempt to gauge just how bad the impact of the drought is and how much will it affect the common man in urban areas who are dependent on these rural areas for food supplies.

    Says IBN18 Network editor-in-chief Rajdeep Sardesai, “As the country witnesses a severe drought, CNN IBN brings Spectre of drought for it viewers to bring the real impact and effect of the drought in various parts of the country. The series will also look at the impact of drought on urban areas addressing problems like the food prices rising by the day.”

    The series will cover places like Aurangabad in Bihar where farmers have now begun using guns to protect the scanty and precious water in their barely functioning irrigation canals. It will also show western Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Haryana amongst others.

    CNN-IBN to telecast ‘Punjab’s Forgotten Women’ on weekend

    NEW DELHI: CNN-IBN is set to telecast a special woman-centric show during the weekend that will discuss the plight of women in Punjab. Titled Punjab‘s Forgotten Women, the show will feature the lives of Punjab‘s women who exisit under religious rituals and social obligations dictated by family, clan and caste.

    Says IBN18 Network editor-in-chief Rajdeep Sardesai, “Through this initiative, we aim to create awareness about the problems faced by these women and hope to bring about a change in their lives.”

    The 30 minute show uncovers the unseen side of the misery suffered by women in Punjab. The show will meet widows suffering with HIV/Aids with an aim to find out the problems that such women face after the death of the only earning member of the family.

    NEW DELHI: The third edition of CNN-IBN Indian of the Year award held in the capital witnessed G Madhavan Nair and team Chandrayaan being declared as the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year 2008.

    G Madhavan Nair and Team Chandrayaan also bagged the award in the category of Public service sector.

    Says Network 18 managing director Raghav Bahl, ” The year 2008 was an extraordinary year in terms of global economic crisis. The year taught everybody from politicians to policy makers to businessmen lessons on how to manage crisis. For businessmen 2008 was a year to stop running on bloated balance sheets and begin fresh management of accounts while for policy makers it was time to check the policies again in order to save the Indian economy from further effects of economic crisis as the time when the crisis had begun the country was relatively safe as compared to other economies.”

    Meanwhile veteran Hindi cinema actor Dilip Kumar was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award and New Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit was conferred with Special Achievement award.

    Assistant sub inspector late Tukaram Omble and the Mumbai Police who fought bravely at the time terror attack on 26 November, 2008 were bestowed with the award of Extraordinary Service to the Nation.

    “CNN-IBN Indian of the Year award recognises the outstanding contributions of Indians in various categories. This initiative is an attempt to recognise the contribution of individuals who stood first amongst equals,” adds IBN18 Network editor-in-chief Rajdeep Sardesai.

    Earlier on 30 January, CNN-IBN had announced the category-wise winners which included Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar in Politics, while Olympic Gold medalist-Abhinav Bindra was declared the winner in Sports category. The category of Business saw HDFC Bank MD Aditya Puri as the winner and Aamir Khan was announced as the winner in the Entertainment sector.

    Finally, the Global Indian award went to AR Rahman.

    The winners were chosen through a four-tier election process, where the IBN 18 editorial board drew the list of nominees; followed by voting of the electoral college and the citizens of India and the jury having ratified it. The process was audited by Ernst & Young.

    NEW DELHI: CNN-IBN will telecast the first part of its cookery show Secret Kitchen on 17 January at 12.30 pm. The second part will be telecast on 24 January at 6.30 pm.

    Hosted by Bikramjit Ray, the two special episodes aims to showcase the finest of cuisines and history behind them across cities like Hong Kong, Belgium and Sri Lanka.

    NEW DELHI: Network18’s English news channel CNN-IBN will telecast a week-long series Are We Battle Ready from today.

    Says IBN18 Network editor in chief Rajdeep Sardesai, “The Indian defence forces have become a true harbinger of peace and stability in the country as well as in the regions beyond our national borders. As we march in to commemorate achievements of our defence forces, this special series sensitively addresses the problem armed forces are facing and focuses on the countries situation in case of a war.”

    Hosted by Anubha Bhosle and Vishal Thapar, the show highlights India’s state of preparedness with regards to the military challenges.

    Also with the country celebrating the 61st Army Day on 15 January, the series takes a peep into the countries defence force and depleting Air Squadron that needs to be addressed immediately.

    Moreover, the program will discuss the state of weapon in the armed forces and how the lack of nimbleness in India’s defence planning and procurements can be exploited by the enemies.

    CNN-IBN to air show on Olympics gold medalist Bindra

    MUMBAI: CNN-IBN is celebrating the victory of India’s first ever individual gold medalist Abhinav Bindra. The English news channel will air an hour-long show Abhinav Bindra-The Goldfinger with Rajdeep Sardesai.

    Airing on 29 August at 8 pm, the show will unfold 13 years of rigorous practice, dedication and never ending hope that went into making Abhinav Bindra the 10 meter air rifle gold medal champion.

    In the show, Sardesai will talk to Bindra’s parents, teachers and coach. The show will engage sports enthusiasts and school children from across the country to ask questions to Bindra. Bindra will speak his heart out with Sardesai sharing his hidden talent of painting and other such facts.

    CNN-IBN to launch The Weekend Edition with Rajdeep Sardesai

    MUMBAI: CNN-IBN is launching a weekend show ‘The Weekend Edition with Rajdeep Sardesai”. Starting on 12 July, the one-hour show will focus on the topics that matter to the citizens.

    Hosted by Sardesai, the show will showcase the biggest stories of the week. It will be divided into five segments, starting with a discussion on the big story of the week.

    This will be followed by feedback on the issue reflected through blogs ‘Blogger Talk’ and also via SMS from viewers in the section ‘Have Your Say’. The show will also profile the newsmaker of the week and will conclude with an editorial called ‘Our Take’ and image of the week in ‘Parting Shot’.

    “This show will give the viewers an opportunity to voice their opinions, ask questions and participate in the discussion by emailing the anchor directly,” CNN-IBN said in a release.
