‘RGV rejected me for a gangster’s role – Actor Pankaj Tripathi tells Rajat Sharma in ‘Aap Ki Adalat’

Mumbai: Bollywood and OTT star actor Pankaj Tripathi has revealed how director Ram Gopal Varma once rejected him for a gangster’s role after carrying out a test. “It was good otherwise both he and I would have suffered losses”, Tripathi said.

Appearing in Rajat Sharma’s iconic show ‘Aap Ki Adalat’, telecasted on Saturday 6 January 2024, Pankaj Tripathi was asked why a noted director like Ram Gopal Varma rejected him for a gangster’s role.

Pankaj Tripathi replied: “Yes, I once went to him and found several ferocious looking ‘gunday’ (gangsters) already waiting there. Some had deep scars on their faces. I asked one of them, are you really an actor? He replied, Ram Gopal Varma casts dangerous looking characters. Those days, aspiring actors used to deliberately cut their faces with blades, so that Ram Gopal Varma may spot and cast them.

Rajat Sharma: Did Ramu call you?

Pankaj Tripathi: Yes, he called me. It was an interesting incident. Ramu asked me to sit on a bench meant for four persons. I sat on the bench in a corner. He told me, ‘No No, come more close this side’. On a bench meant for four, I was sitting alone and he stared at me intently for 10 to 15 minutes. I felt very sheepish, when he continued to stare me for long. Then he told me, ‘Jao, Go’. He didn’t call me later….Of course, he is a good director. He met me once later and praised my acting, and said, “You are doing good, Pankaj”.

Rajat Sharma: He must have realized, if he had cast you then it could have been his gain?

Tripathi: It’s all a game of time (Samay Ka Khel Hota Hai). If he had cast me then, then it would have been his loss and my loss too. (Tripathi told the audience) So, if nothing big happens in your life, don’t be disappointed, it is an omen for something good that is going to happen.

‘I Never Check Monitor After Shoot’

Pankaj Tripathi revealed he never watched the camera monitor after completing his shoot.  He said, “This is a rare thing which few people in the media know about. You (Rajat Sharma) have good spies in Mumbai. I never check the camera monitor after finishing my shoot. I think the director is the captain and it is his job to check the monitor. If he okays the scene, then it means he got what he wanted.”

    ‘Fukrey’ and Other Sequels

Asked whether he changed his dialogues and sometimes, even the climax in his films, Pankaj Tripathi admitted in the affirmative. He said, at this moment, five of his films have sequels because they were hits.

Rajat Sharma: Where did you get this idea of mixing Hindi with English in your dialogues?

Tripathi: In the first part of the movie Fukrey, it was my idea. I told the director (M S Lamba) I wanted to change my lines. He first refused. While I was rehearsing, lighting work was going on inside the security cabin of Delhi’s Miranda College. The director told me don’t mix English in your dialogue, I told him I am only rehearsing. The lighting men began to laugh when I mixed English in my dialogues. By that time, the director had seen my rehearsed dialogue, and he agreed. In ‘Fukrey Returns’, I got the written dialogues. Also in ‘Fukrey 3’ too.

Rajat Sharma: In Fukrey Part 1 and Part 2, your picture was not there in the posters, but in Part 3, your picture was there in the poster. Pankaj Tripathi has become a saleable star now?

Tripathi: Yahi Toh Jeevan Hai (This is Life)

Rajat Sharma: That’s why you are doing several sequels of your films?

Tripathi: Sequels are made when film becomes a hit. Unsuccessful films don’t have sequels. At this moment, five of my films have sequels – Stree, Mirzapur, Criminal Justice, Fukrey and also Gangs of Wasseypur.

Rajat Sharma: There was this ‘Super 30’ movie in which you were doing the role of a neta. You deliberately changed the dialogues?

Tripathi: Vikas Bahl was the director. There was the scene where a student’s gets admission to Oxford University and asks the neta for money. The neta started blubbering something else. The neta was saying: ‘Ja Rahe Ho? Kahan Ja Rahe Ho? Jao, Jao, London Jao, Paris Jao, Japan Jao, Vietnam Jao, China Jao, Beijing Jao, Dubai Jao, Bahrain Jao.’ It looked like a poetry. The lines were not written. The dialogue was delivered spontaneously. I was doing the role of a neta in Bihar (Minister Shriram Singh in the movie). I had seen a leader in my village who used to blubber meaninglessly. I told the director Vikas Bahl, I will speak in the same manner. So, the scene developed in that way. It looked different.

Rajat Sharma: Can you repeat the same dialogue here?

Tripathi: It was, “Dubai Jao, Bahrain Jao … Kya Baat Hai. The boy said, Sir, you had called me. I replied: Hum har us cheez ko bulate hain, jo desh ke liye baat karega. The boy said, I need money. I replied: Jao Jao Jahan Jaana, par paisa aur prem ke chakkar me mat padna. Humne achche achhe ko barbaad hote dekha hai. Bhagat Singh padhe they? Dekho, nahin pade they. Jao Jao.” So you see, the neta starts giving a sermon instead of giving money.

  • Aap Ki Adalat: Minister Hardeep Puri optimistic about PoK joining India soon

Aap Ki Adalat: Minister Hardeep Puri optimistic about PoK joining India soon

Mumbai: Union petroleum and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri is optimistic about Pakistan occupied Kashmir joining India “soon”.

Replying to questions from Rajat Sharma in ‘Aap Ki Adalat’ show, on India TV, Puri said, “the economic situation in Pakistan has deteriorated so much that after sometime, some parts of that country may like to merge with India”.

Asked by Rajat Sharma when people of India will see Pak occupied Kashmir joining India, Puri replied: “Jaldi” (soon). He did not elaborate.

Puri, who has been a diplomat for 39 years, said: “There has been a sea change in India-Pakistan relations in the last nine years. No more is India tagged with Pakistan. This has been possible because of Prime Minister Modi. Modi has three big characteristics: One, he does what he promises. Two, his dream of making India a developed nation by 2047 will become a reality. Three, in a deeply divided world, Modi is playing the role of a unifier. This became clear at the recently held G20 summit in India.”

On the demand for Khalistan by separatists based in Canada, Hardeep Singh Puri said: “Let them create Khalistan in Canada, because most of the Khalistanis are based there. I consider this a cuckooland…….  Our 10th Guru Gobind Singh had formed the Khalsa. Today Sikhs constitute less than two per cent of India’s population, and yet Punjab dominates in agriculture, transport, medicine, law and other fields. …..With India fast emerging among the top three economies of the world, very soon we will find Indians living in US and Canada returning to India because of better economic opportunities.”

On a recent report by Financial Times, London about US foiling a plan by Indian operatives to kill separatist Khalistani leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, Hardeep Puri said: “I have a different opinion about Financial Times. It publishes news reports about oil daily, which I do not trust. It is not India’s policy to eliminate terrorists on foreign soil.”

Asked by Rajat Sharma why enemies of India like Pannu should not be eliminated, Puri only replied: “Let me keep my feelings in my heart. I should not say more. But let me tell you, this is not our policy, not is it our system….Will they say Indian operatives carried out the Air India Kanishka bombing in 1985? Why is there violence, extremism and drugs in Canada? The terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar who was killed, was denied visa several times by the Canadian authorities.”

Puri said, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had been supporting separatists since long. “When he came to Amritsar, I and Navjot Singh Sidhu, then a minister in Punjab, received him and took him to Darbar Sahib. Trudeau had been critical of India since long on the issue of Khalistan separatists. Their behavior on this issue was ‘chid-chida'(harsh)”.

Puri disclosed how at a lunch hosted for the Canadian PM by Modi, one of the Canadian ministers, Navdeep Singh Bains openly said, “I went to Canada and became a minister”. “I replied to him, ‘Look, I stayed in India and became a minister”, Puri said.

Puri disclosed how in 2017, he got a sudden call from the Prime Minister’s office to come and meet Modi. “I was in Colombo at that time attending an Indian Ocean conference. I met the Prime Minister at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. He invited me for breakfast, and asked me to go to Rashtrapati Bhavan to take the oath of minister. I almost literally fell off my chair when he said this.  Later, I got the ticket for Rajya Sabha.”

On Rahul Gandhi, Hardeep Singh Puri denied that he ever called him an “ass”. “It was a proverb that I was quoting. I was ‘getting an ass to run a horse’s race’. I never said, Rahul was a donkey.(Maine kabhi nahin kaha woh gadhaa hain). But on foolishness, I had said, there are three kinds of fools in the world – an ordinary one, an extraordinary one, and the third I call Chakravarthi.”

Puri disclosed how as a special emissary of the government he had to travel through the jungle of Jaffna to meet LTTE chief V. Prabhakaran in 1987 to get his approval for India-Sri Lanka peace agreement. “There were landmines on the way, and we had to travel at night to avoid attacks. Our military adviser was an Indian Navy officer. It was a secretive mission. It was a professional high water for me”, Puri said.

  • ‘India is the only country in the world which stands eye-to-eye against China’, External Affairs minister Dr. S. Jaishankar tells Rajat Sharma

‘India is the only country in the world which stands eye-to-eye against China’, External Affairs minister Dr. S. Jaishankar tells Rajat Sharma

Mumbai: External Affairs minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has said that ‘India is the only country in the world today, which is standing eye-to-eye against China’. He was replying to questions from Rajat Sharma on India TV show ‘Aap Ki Adalat’.

Sharma asked the minister why 19 rounds of talks have been going on between army commanders from both sides in Ladakh, if China has not entered our territory. Jaishankar replied, “The 19 rounds of talks took place because both forces have been deployed in forward positions and have very close to each other. When forces equipped with weapons are on full alert, when they are deployed in forward positions and there is tension in the air, there are more chances of an accident happening. If such a situation continues, there are chances of things happening that took place earlier. The present negotiations are over how much they would pull back, and how much we would pull back This is nothing new. A similar situation happened on the border in Barahoti, Uttarakhand, way back in 1958, when both sides had moved forward and then there was an agreement to pull back. In 1986, there was Chinese transgression in Sumdorong Chu valley in Arunachal Pradesh. For nine years talks went on till 1995, there was an agreement and both sides pulled back….During Covid, we carried out a huge troop movement in Ladakh. Today if there is one country which stands eye-to-eye against China in the world, it is us.” (अगर आज कोई दुनिया में चीन के मुकाबले में साथ आँख से आंख मिलाकर खड़ा है तो हम खड़े हैं।)

Jaishankar explained how India airlifted nearly 70,000 soldiers during the stand-off near LAC in Ladakh in 2020. He said, “In 2020, there was Covid pandemic, and there was nationwide lockdown. Chinese troops had violated the 1993 and 1996 agreements on peace and tranquility, which stipulated that both sides cannot deploy armies close to the LAC. These are written agreements, 30 years old. When Chinese army violated, they probably thought we would not counter-deploy because of the Covid lockdown  in April-June, 2020. Modi Ji decided that since there was threat from China, we must counter-deploy. We used air force, railway and road systems. Our air force alone airlifted nearly 70,000 jawans. We also airlifted tanks, heavy guns and trucks. You know, our border infrastructure was not strong when Modiji came to power. The previous UPA government was on record having said that if we leave our border like this, the Chinese cannot enter. This was their line of thought. There was no focus on developing border infrastructure. Now there has been much progress in the last 10 years. So if there is a standoff going there today, it is because of Modi government’s decision. If they (Rahul Gandhi) are more worried about territory, we too are serious. But it is a fact that we lost 38,000 sq km of land to the Chinese in 1962. They should have worried at that time. When they visited Olympics in China, they should have discussed territory with them. I do not know whether they discussed territory or not. “

This was in oblique reference to the visit to 2008 Beijing Olympics by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

Rajat Sharma: Rahul Gandhi visited Ladakh recently and went to Pangong Tso lake. He said, China has occupied several thousand sq km of our area there.

Dr S. Jaishankar: “It’s a nice thing he visited Pangong Tso and saw the area from a distance. In 1959, the Chinese came and by 1962, they occupied the area. There is a famous place Khurnak Fort (on the northern shore of Pangong Lake) which they occupied. We lost 38,000 sq km area to the Chinese in 1962.”

Rajat Sharma: Rahul Gandhi says he once talked to you about China but he says Jaishankar Ji does not know much.

Jaishankar: “What can I say? Maybe I could not explain to him properly, or there may be something lacking in the person trying to understand. It could be my fault. Maybe he is a knowledgeable, a clever person.”

Rajat Sharma: You stayed in China for a long time?

Jaishankar: I was the ambassador there for four and a half years. It was my longest record there.

Rajat Sharma: Yet you couldn’t understand China?

Jaishankar: Maybe if I had spent those four and a half years with him (Rahul), I could have understood China better.

The External Affairs Minister said, there appears to be a “plan” behind Chinese army committing transgressions regularly at the Line of Actual Control. He said: “Already we have a boundary dispute, but for me, the point of worry is that there appears to be some strategy behind all this. Already we have two agreements signed in 1993 and 1996. There should not have been big troop deployments. They have done this deliberately. If there are mistakes (transgressions), it could be 100 or 1,000, but 10,000 is not a mistake. There is some plan, some order behind this. When they transgressed, it means they wanted to put pressure on us, and the reply to pressure was that we have to tackle it.”

Rajat Sharma: This is being interpreted as if Modi fears China?

Jaishankar: “No. Their effort is to put pressure on us, and our response is to counter-deploy. Our army are in position there. If you ask, we are the only one in the world who stand in a head-to-head confrontation with China. Think about how we mobilized our army during Covid.”

Rajat Sharma: It was a difficult task?

Jaishankar: ‘We did not make it public at that time because we thought this was a matter of national security. We didn’t want a public debate. There was no advantage in doing that. The large-scale troop movement did take place. If there is one country which stands eye-to-eye against China, it’s us.”

On the recent Chinese map showing Arunachal Pradesh as part of China’s Tibet region, Dr S Jaishankar replied: ” Their policy regarding Arunachal Pradesh is not correct. Forget the map, the land is ours, which they have named on their own. Let them name it, the land is ours. That’s a different matter. Point is, the manner in which people are trying to mislead. The land that China occupied in 1962 and before that, they are trying to shift the blame on us today.”

    RAHUL GANDHI ON CHINA

When Rajat Sharma pointed out that Rahul Gandhi had spoken about the Chinese vision, during his visit to Brussels recently, Dr Jaishankar lashed out at the Congress leader, saying: “At a time, when we were having the biggest conference (G20) in our history, which should have been praised by all, he goes outside and criticizes. Leave it to him. But what I would like say is: sometimes you disclose your real position by mistake. Like, the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative project. It passes through Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. When you speak of Belt and Road, you do not even speak two words to say that it is a violation of our territorial integrity. So you see, you inner feeling gets exposed.”

Dr Jaishankar said, “In 2017, there was the stand-off going in Dokalam on India-Bhutan-China border. At that time, he (Rahul) had a meeting with the Chinese ambassador in Delhi. We were surprised because our armed forces were in a stand-off against Chinese troops at that time. If he had wanted a briefing, he could have called us. I was Foreign Secretary at that time. I was not in politics. What was the necessity of taking a briefing from the Chinese ambassador?”

Rajat Sharma: What do you think, who feeds him about China?

Jaishankar: “I don’t know, and I do not normally speak on matter which I don’t know.”

    MODI AND G20

The External Affairs minister, while describing the recently conclude G20 summit as a resounding success that showcased what he termed as a “Shining India”, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become “a sort of a role model for several world leaders.”

Rajat Sharma: The Italian PM Giorgia Meloni has described Modi as the most loved leader in the world?

Jaishankar: “There are many such countries and world leaders for whom Modi Ji has become a sort of a role model. They find him very much decisive, courageous in the face of big challenges and his great vision. The world today has become tech-savvy. Modi gets the largest support from those who are tech-savvy. Modi ji’s initiatives always has a good connect somewhere.”

Rajat Sharma: What do heads of states or prime ministers or presidents speak to you about Modi?

Jaishankar: “Look, my biggest problem is, when they come, everybody wants to meet him. I am also a time manager. I face some problems on how to arrange meetings for all, how to organize. You must have seen, the moment he handed over the gavel to Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, our responsibility ended. But soon afterwards, all other leaders stayed behind. They wanted to meet Modi Ji in one-to-one meetings. Our program that day went on till late into the night, because every leader wanted to meet him before leaving.”

Rajat Sharma: The Australian Prime Minister had publicly said, “He is The Boss”. What dialogue did Modi make for him to say so?

Jaishankar: “Dialogue Nahin Maara. Modi Ji Apne Dialogue Ko Ek Kism Se Radiate Karte Hain Jab Woh Aate Hain. Aapko Nahin Lagta Ki He Is The Boss?” (There was no dialogue. Modiji’s dialogue radiates from him when he enters. Don’t you think, He Is The Boss?)

Asked whose idea was it to assemble all G20 leaders at the samadhi of Gandhiji at Rajghat, Dr S. Jaishankar replied, “No. There are two points. One, it was Modi Ji’s idea because Gandhiji is the most iconic figure across the world. So when world leaders came, it was felt proper to go there together and pay our tributes. It seemed a natural thing for me and him (Modi) too. Two, many people appreciated this. We heard, saw pictures and we had that emotional feeling there. Many leaders mentioned this in the third last session.”

Rajat Sharma: But Congress leaders are saying that Modi Ji has taken over their icon Gandhiji?

Jaishankar: “Arrey, what should I say? Those who crib will continue to crib, those who work will continue to work. Look, G20 is not a political issue. It relates to our country. Every Indian citizen should feel proud.”

Dr S Jaishankar disclosed how Modi had to intervene personally to ensure that a unanimous joint declaration was adopted at the G20 summit. He said, “At several points of time, we felt there won’t be a joint declaration. It was a difficult task. It was not easy to have unanimity in today’s world situation….Finally, before we had to conclude, we found that we need to speak to only a few countries directly. This was in the interest of all. Had we failed in getting unanimity on Ukraine, all our work on other issues could have gone waste. Our team told me, and I went to Modi Ji and told him, these are two or three leaders to whom you must speak directly. He went and spoke to them directly.”

Rajat Sharma: Well, for the first time you are revealing that it was because of Modi Ji that the joint declaration was adopted?

Jaishankar: “There was a huge lounge, twice or thrice the size of this studio. He (Modi) went personally and convinced these leaders to accept a compromise, because the total package was in every nation’s interest. He told them, please do not block the declaration because of a word or a sentence. I felt, most of the leaders agreed, they had personal respect for Modi Ji and they were aware of the relationship.”

Sometimes people reveal their true position by mistake’: S. Jaishankar on Rahul Gandhi’s praise for China’s BRI

Mumbai: Union external affairs minister S. Jaishankar in the upcoming episode of ‘Aap Ki Adalat’ took a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for praising China for the Belt and Road (BRI) initiatives in Brussels while the G20 summit was being held in India. In a candid conversation with India TV chairperson and editor-in-chief Rajat Sharma, S. Jaishankar said ‘sometimes people reveal their true position by mistake’.

    S. Jaishankar, who will appear on the show this Saturday, a week after the successful G20 Summit, said that the timing of the comment was unfortunate. Replying to Gandhi’s urge for an ‘alternate vision’ to China’s coercive production model, Jaishankar says, “Look at the timing. India is organising the greatest event in history, where we should all come together and appreciate it, yet at that time, he is going out and condemning the country.”

“Sometimes people reveal their true positions by mistake. Like when he praised the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) when it passes through the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). However, he refrained from stating that it infringes India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added.

Speaking about the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, he stated that PoK is an integral part of India and will remain so. He added that, “We have inherited the problem of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir” and it is difficult to say what will happen in the future. The former foreign secretary turned politician, also shared some inside details of the G20 summit and how India successfully gained consensus on the G20 Delhi declaration. Additionally, he explained how it would help the world at large and open doors of new opportunities.

Renowned for his articulate and strategic communication skills in the world of international relations, EAM Jaishankar also touched upon several topics of international importance.

In Rajat Sharma’s headline-making program ‘Aap Ki Adalat’, he spoke about Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), India’s ties with China, the rising Khalistan movement in Canada and India’s United Nations Security Council (UNSC) permanent membership.

The union minister also shared his journey from a diplomat to a cabinet minister. This episode of the ‘Aap Ki Adalat’ will be aired on India TV on Saturday at 10 PM and repeated on Sunday at 10 AM and 10 PM.

Mumbai: According to a study by Muck Rack ‘The 2022 State of Journalism on Twitter,’ India TV editor-in-chief and chairman Rajat Sharma is the most followed verified journalist on Twitter following MSNBC host Rachel Maddow and CNN host Anderson Cooper.

India Today news anchor and journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, Washington Post columnist Barkha Dutt and Zee News editor-in-chief Sudhir Chaudhary are also in the league for having huge followership on Twitter globally which includes Washington Post contributor Carlos Loret De Mola, freelance journalist Joaquín López Dóriga, The Guardian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano and owner Carmen Aristegui.

India’s freelance journalist and social media activist Sadiya Parveen took the number one spot for achieving the highest number of Twitter followers with a one year old account. She gained 15,367 followers closely followed by another Indian journalist Abdul Kalam who had 13,143 followers.

Muck Rack study includes only verified journalists within all rankings and roundups. The survey of 2,547 journalists between 4 January to 25 January found that 77 per cent of the respondents (journalists) value Twitter more than any other social media platform. About 39 per cent journalists said that they plan on spending more time on Twitter in 2022 than they did last year. Journalists also ranked Twitter as one of their top destinations for finding news, second only to online newspapers and magazines.

Muck Rack editorial director Andrew Mercier said, “And even amid controversies and potential acquisitions, it’s likely Twitter will remain a leading platform for the foreseeable future.”

The media outlets with the most collective followers were CNN, ESPN, The New York Times, MSNBC, The Washington Post, Fox News, NBC News, BBC, The Guardian and The Athletic. When it came to media outlets with the most journalists present on Twitter, the BBC led the pack with 1,783 journalists active on the social media platform. It was followed by Bloomberg News, The New York Times, Reuters, Associated Press, CNN, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and ABC News (Australia).

The trends spotted in the report show that the average journalist covers four beats as compared to last year where they covered three beats. It also highlighted that most surveyed journalists create content in at least one medium in addition to their primary medium with digital having the highest share at 38 per cent followed by print at 25 per cent, newsletters at 17 per cent and podcast at 15 per cent. Of the journalists surveyed, fewer said that CEOs and company PR professionals are credible sources for reporting. However, more journalists found social media personalities (17 per cent vs 12 per cent last year) and celebrity spokespeople (14 per cent vs 12 per cent last year) more credible than they did last year.

According to the study, a third of journalists surveyed believed (32 per cent) that audience trust in their coverage has increased. Most importantly, most journalists turn to online newspapers (57 per cent) or Twitter (18 per cent) first for news. Majority of journalists surveyed (62 per cent) reported that they prefer Zoom for virtual events. And 46 per cent of journalists say that an event going virtual does not affect their likelihood of covering it.
