    MUMBAI: Frequent allegations of sensationalist journalism notwithstanding, India TV has managed to stay at the top of its game, what with veterans like Rajat Sharma associated with the Hindi news channel.

     

    And now when the channel is in the middle of a refresh to let people know it has become serious about the news business, what better than ‘Brand Sharma’ to lend credibility to the exercise.

     

    As India TV MD and CEO Ritu Dhawan puts it: “Till recently, audiences were more interested in non-political and ‘popular’ content, so we were catering to that. Now with elections and various other news events, the flavour of hard news is back, so we have refreshed our programming completely. Today, the number of news stories on India TV is more than that on any other news channel. With Rajat Sharma leading the pack and Q W Naqvi at the helm of affairs, our viewers can be assured of the most accurate and responsible news reporting, which will further cement our leadership position in the Hindi news genre.”

     

    In fact, the channel’s reliance on Sharma’s popularity emanates from a position of knowledge wherein it actually commissioned research to find out how best it could highlight its repositioning. “One thing that came out very clearly is that ‘Brand Rajat Sharma’ riding on the credibility it brings in, will have a towering effect on ‘Brand India TV’. It further suggested that people may like to see that connect personified both in terms of communication and programming. And so, not only is the editor-in-chief back on prime time news with his daily analysis show, Aaj Ki Baat Rajat Sharma ke saath, he is also the face of the brand campaign,” reveals Dhawan.

     

    Indeed, as part of the revamp, India TV has embarked on an ambitious, six-week-long marketing campaign which leverages Sharma’s popularity with the audience. The first leg of the campaign will run for 21 days across Hindi speaking markets like Mumbai, Delhi, Agra, Lucknow, Allahabad and Gorakhpur. Life-size images of Sharma will adorn hoardings and billboards across these cities as well as digital ports at arrival and departure terminals in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata.

     

    The banners focus on Sharma’s pensive expression along with the words, ‘You, me and India TV – let’s change the face of the nation’ and have been designed by Saints & Warriors, one of the three creative agencies that were short-listed for the job.

     

    “Three agencies made it to the final short-list for the job, basis what they had presented in response to the brief given. Eventually, Saints & Warriors was chosen for the assignment, basis further discussions with them. Their credentials, clarity of thought, and extended execution sampling helped us clearly decide in their favour,” informs Dhawan.

     

    Working on ad placement on news websites by geographically targeting them to suit audiences is Agency Ecosystem by Amar Ujala, which has a target to reach 35 million impressions through websites like Dainik Bhaskar and Amar Ujala. “We have tried to keep a close leash on expenditures. The first leg of 21 days of the campaign is to the tune of Rs 5.5 crore,” reveals Dhawan.

     

    It is learnt that the revamp is not only to tone down sensational news but also because of the increase in the number of news channels which has led to severe fragmentation of viewership. While India TV was launched at a time when its competitors could be counted on one’s fingers, it now has several competing channels swimming in the same pond. “With so many new and small channels taking up a large percentage of the market, it has become a highly competitive space so the brand refresh was done to mainly maintain our viewership,” a source from India TV tells this website.

     

    Whatever the reasons for the refresh, it’s just two days since the campaign has kicked off and people are getting used to the posters of Sharma in his signature pose with folded hands. What remains to be seen however is to what extent Sharma will help change people’s hitherto perception of India TV.

    MUMBAI: As a part of its effort to honour the bravehearts of the nation with the first edition of the “Officer’s Choice Salaam India Awards”, India TV also instituted a bravery award in the memory of Jyoti Singh, the brave girl who lost her life after fighting the gruesome gang rape in a bus in Delhi but awakened the society and the nation on crime against women.

    Jyoti Singh Bravery Awards were also presented at a gala ceremony in New Delhi on Saturday. Other categories for which the Awards were given away included Bravery, Gallantry & Special Awards etc.

    The 13 winners included Shareef Ibrahim Kutty for risking his life to save many innocent lives, Late Barun Biswas (posthumous) for his crusades against anti-social elements & eventually putting up his life for the cause he lived for, Captain Bikramjeet Singh for his exemplary display of valour during the recent Uttarakhand crises. Lakshmi for her decisive fight against the menace of acid attacks was one of the three winners of the Jyoti Singh Awards.

    India TV Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Rajat Sharma, in his address, congratulated the winners and dedicated the awards as a salute to Bravehearts of the nation who through their selfless & altruistic acts have kept the trust running into humanity. He also said that such deeds inculcate a spirit of courage and humanity among fellow citizens.

    Rajat Sharma gets nod for second news channel

    NEW DELHI: After tasting success with India TV, founder-promoter Rajat Sharma is readying to launch his second news channel.

    Sharma has got the nod from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to launch India TV Wiz, a news channel in Hindi and English.

    Sharma, who is Chairman of Independent News Service, said the permission was received yesterday. “Wiz will be up in six months, perhaps earlier in beta form. You will see a truly unique bouquet of content that will make it a nationwide phenomena,” Sharma added.

    The 24-hour channel will be available on analogue cable and all digital platforms. The aim will also be to connect with new-age audiences through the “fast-emerging digital media business, India TV Interactive.”

    “Wiz will break the mould. It will give premium advertisers a bouquet of screens that support true marketing innovation, reaching their message to top-of-the-line-audiences across Tam cities and the next wave of conditional access markets. Wiz will be plugged on to new media and mobile platforms from Day One. Finally, Wiz will power a world-class partner for international news,” said Sharma.

    INS launched India TV in August 2004. Fuse+ Media, an entity of ComVentures, a leading Silicon Valley-based venture capital and private equity group with over $1.5 billion of assets under management, took 19.17 per cent stake in INS for Rs 509 million. This valued INS at Rs 2.70 billion. In early 2008, after another strategic investment, INS’s enterprise value climbed to Rs 5 billion.

    India TV returns to NBA fold after three-month estrangement

    NEW DELHI: India TV has returned to the News Broadcasters Association after three months of estrangement over the decision of the NBA Authority taking suo motu action on the telecast of a report relating to an interview by a Pakistani researcher to Reuters after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai on 26 November last year.

    Following the channel’s return to the NBA, its founder-chairman Rajat Sharma will rejoin as a member of the NBA Board. The channel’s managing editor Vinod Kapri, who had tendered his resignation, returns as a member of the NBA Authority.

    It is understood that though the channel was forced to pay a penalty of Rs 100,000 and run an apology scroll, India TV which had quit NBA on 19 April decided to sink differences after some members of the NBA Board – themselves broadcasters – were sympathetic and admitted the guidelines of the Board had not been followed.

    NBA sources told indiantelevision.com that any viewer can complain to the respective TV channel directly about any report. The matter goes to the NBA Authority headed by Justice JS Verma only after the channel has not been able to satisfy the complainant within one week.

    India TV had run a late night report in Hindi about an interview given in English to Reuters by Barhana Ali who is a researcher with the American CIA about the terrorist attack. Ali had subsequently complained to the channel that the interview had been in English to Reuters and not to the channel, and that she had been erroneously described as a CIA spy.

    The channel had subsequently run a story clarifying the points made by Ali, and she was satisfied. The NBA Board had been duly informed and decided to treat the matter as closed.

    However, the 9-member NBA Authority – set up by the NBA Board – decided suo motu to take up the case and is understood to have taken a decision against the channel in a hearing which reportedly did not have the quorum as required under the guidelines.

    India TV is understood to have taken the decision to return in the larger interest of unity among news channels.
