Rajat Sharma takes helm of India’s top news broadcasters’ body

NEW DELHI: Rajat Sharma, the seasoned television news anchor and promoter of India TV, has been unanimously elected president of the News Broadcasters & Digital Association (NBDA) for 2025-26. The appointment, announced at the organisation’s board meeting on 19 September positions him at the head of India’s most influential media news lobbying group as the industry navigates mounting regulatory pressures and fierce competition from digital platforms.

Mathrubhumi Printing & Publishing , managing director M.V. Shreyams Kumar will serve as vice-president, whilst News24 Broadcast India chairperson and managing director Anuradha Prasad Shukla takes the honorary treasurer role. Both appointments were unanimous.

The NBDA board includes heavyweights from India’s media landscape: Rahul Joshi of Network18 Media & Investments, Kalli Purie Bhandal from TV Today Network, and Anil Kumar Malhotra of Zee Media. Other members are Dhruba Mukherjee (ABP Network), I. Venkat (Eenadu Television), Rahul Kanwal (New Delhi Television), Mahesh Kumar Rajaraman (Sun TV Network), and Rohit Gopakumar Velloli from Bennett Coleman & Co.

Moneycontrol exclusive: PM Narendra Modi on G20, global affairs, economy, and more

Mumbai: In an exclusive interview to Moneycontrol days before India readies to host the G20 Leaders Summit, PM Narendra Modi spoke at length on global issues, India’s growth prospects and its role in G20 and the overall economy.

In an hour-long conversation at his 7, Lok Kalyan Marg office with Network 18 editors (Network18’s editor-in-chief Rahul Joshi, Network18 chief content officer Santosh Menon, Network18 managing editor (digital) Karthik Subbaraman, Moneycontrol’s chief content & strategy officer Javed Sayed), the prime minister also shared his views on inflation and the dangers of freebies.

Talking about the India growth story, the prime minister said, “India’s growth is not only good for Indians but also for the world. India’s growth is clean and green growth. India’s growth is being achieved with a human-centric approach that can be replicated in other countries too. India’s growth helps further the interests of the Global South.”

It’s the prime minister’s first interview to a digital-only publication in his second term. The full interview will be published on Moneycontrol.com at 7:30 am on Wednesday 6 September.

Sharing his views on India’s role in the G20, the prime minister said that India has been advancing the interests of the developing world, including the interests of nations not represented in the G20, such as the countries of the African Union.

“Perhaps for the first time in the history of G20, the troika is with the developing world—Indonesia, India, and Brazil. This troika can amplify the voice of the developing world, at a crucial time when there are increased tensions due to global geopolitics.”

The prime minister said that India has been proactive in finding solutions for global issues and the same is also reflected in the country’s agenda for G20. “When we laid out our agenda for the G20, it was welcomed universally, because everyone knew that we would bring our proactive and positive approach to help find solutions for global issues.”

Prime minister Modi also said that the world is now convinced that India will play a larger role in shaping the global future.

“When global leaders meet me, they are filled with a sense of optimism about India due to the efforts of 140 crore Indians across various sectors. They are also convinced that India has a lot to offer and must play a larger role in shaping the global future. This has also been witnessed in their support for our work through the G20 platform.”

Talking about the G20 events and conferences that took place across the length and the breadth of the country in the last few months, the Prime Minister said, “Our democratization of the G20 Presidency is our investment in the capacity building of the people, especially youth, of various cities across the country.”

Asked about India’s guiding principle for engaging with the world, the prime minister said it was no different from what his government followed at home.” We have followed the approach of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas in our country over the last 9 years…. This is our guiding principle in global relations as well.”

Talking about the problem of heightened inflation globally and its impact on India and countries of the Global South, prime minister Modi said, “As far as India is concerned, we have taken a number of steps to control inflation. Even in the face of adversities and global dynamics, India’s inflation was two percentage points lower than the global average inflation rate in 2022. Yet, we are not resting at that and are continuing to make pro-people decisions to boost ease of living. For example, recently on Raksha Bandhan, you saw how we reduced the prices of LPG for all consumers.”

Sharing his views on debt vulnerabilities and damage to the economy from freebies, “The long-term implications of such policies destroy not only the economy but also society. The poor pay a heavy price. Yet again, the good thing is that people are becoming increasingly aware of the problem,” the prime minister said.

“In this information age, news about the debt crisis in one country is travelling to many other countries. People are analysing the situation and awareness is spreading. This is helpful for other countries to take precautionary steps to avoid a similar situation in their own countries, with the people’s support. In our own country too, on multiple platforms, I have spoken about the need to be alert against financially irresponsible policies,” he added.

The prime minister said that India’s political stability is the main reason why every sector could see deep reforms which led to stronger economic prospects for the country. “Due to this political stability, every other sector could see deep structural reforms. The economy, education, social empowerment, welfare delivery, infrastructure – I can keep on mentioning sectors that have seen reforms.”

  • The No.1 attitude leaves no room for complacency: Network18 MD and Editor-in-Chief Rahul Joshi

The No.1 attitude leaves no room for complacency: Network18 MD and Editor-in-Chief Rahul Joshi

Mumbai: Network18 group’s portfolio of channels have recently dominated the Broadcast Audience Research Council (Barc) ratings. In lieu of their achievements, the group’s managing director and editor-in-chief Rahul Joshi on Friday addressed the company’s 4500 employees in a heartfelt letter of congratulations.

The network’s news brand News18 India is the latest to join the bandwagon of the group’s leading channels in their respective genres. News18 India has garnered the highest share of ratings in the Hindi-speaking market (HSM) 15+ for three consecutive weeks and had 13.6 per cent share as of Week 31 (30 July to 5 August).

Joshi stated, “News18 India trounced Aaj Tak from its perch two weeks ago and widened its lead in the following week stamping its leadership authority. We’ve been in the top three for a long time, often beating Aaj Tak in the metros, but this time the lead is across time bands, age groups, socio-economic classes and what have you.”

He further continued, “Hats off to Team News18 India for this comprehensive win over Aaj Tak and others, such as India TV, and also those trailing a distance away, like Zee and ABP. We’re more convinced about our leadership since it comes on the back of both rising reach and time spent, which means the engagement with the brand is high and the leadership here to stay.”

Network18’s English general news brand CNN-News18 garnered 30 per cent share of the ratings among English news channels, 15 weeks ago. This is 60 per cent higher than its closest competitor Times now, the flagship channel of Times Network.

Joshi called English business news channel CNBC-TV18 as the group’s ‘crown jewel’ which opened with a market share of 80 per cent in the English business news genre when Barc first published ratings after a 17-month hiatus. The channel’s share in prime-time market hours was even greater at 90 per cent.

Network18’s digital news brand Moneycontrol has over half a million paid subscribers, over 55 million monthly unique users and 7.5 million app installs, revealed Joshi in the letter. This makes it the 14th biggest news brand globally in terms of paid subscribers. News18.com is fewer than six years old and has nearly 125 million monthly visitors who consume stories and videos in nearly every major Indian language. It is also the only digital brand to report live from 125 districts in the country, according to Joshi.

“The idea behind this note is not to brag about our achievements. Or, truth be told, not just that! I write this note with all humility to thank you for your contribution and ownership in taking our brands to leadership positions. What’s more heartening is that this time the turnaround has been driven by the young and restless at Network18,” said Joshi.

“I hope in the months and years ahead, you will make this giant media colossus dance to digital and social tunes. As we pivot the organisation into India’s largest multi-platform company with a digital DNA, I’m sure the young, restless, next-rung leadership will take charge and forge ahead.”

“The senior leadership team and I will continue to guide in the future, not so much as captain but as coach; not as hands-on leader but friend, philosopher, mentor. That alone will make your company a breeding ground for young talent, many of whom have taken our brands to leadership positions in the past few years.”

“The problem with being No. 1 is that there’s only one way to go—further up. The No. 1 attitude leaves no room for complacency; in fact, it instills a large dose of paranoia and restlessness to stay ahead. Always at the top,” he concludes.

Leadership secrets & wisdom from Viacom18

MUMBAI: A few months ago,  during the thick of the lockdown due to the pandemic, Viacom18 CEO Sudhanshu Vats announced that he was moving on from the organisation he led for around eight years. Earlier, in 2019, his deputy COO Raj Nayak too departed from a company he was associated with for seven years. Both  the leaders have left a long-lasting impact on Viacom18. And especially the senior team which is currently being led by the new CEO Rahul Joshi, who also heads the news operations under TV18.

In a fireside chat with Indiantelevision.com founder, CEO & editor-in-chief Anil Wanvari last week, Viacom18 network head of ad sales Mahesh Shetty recalled the days when he had an opportunity to work with both  Raj Nayak and Sudhanshu Vats and his bond with his current CEO Rahul Joshi. And he shared the leadership and management styles of the two senior execs.

Watch the virtual fireside chat with Mahesh Shetty

“I have huge respect for Raj Nayak. He is a maverick sales guy, and an amazing person. It was big shoes to fill in. I have done deals with him in the past when I worked at Radio Mirchi for Mirchi Music Award that used to come on Colors. He is someone who enjoys huge respect in media and entertainment industry,” Shetty shared during his conversation…

Shetty was hired by Vats to look after ad sales and revenue for the whole network – both regional and Hindi channels. “Raj was COO and he looked after direct sales for Colors,” said Shetty. “He built and left behind a fabulous sales team. There is not much of a change that has happened in it. It is not like that the new leaders have come in and they have changed the entire team, most of the team leaders are the same.”

He further highlighted that Raj had this attitude to think scale, to think big in sales efforts. “It is a great legacy that Nayak has left behind. The team is aware of the fact that they are selling big impact properties. So, I don’t have to go out and tell the teams how to sell.”

Recently, long-timer Simran Hoon stepped down from her role as Viacom18 EVP and ad sales head after nearly 13 years with the organisation.

“I don't have control over things which are above me,” said Shetty referring to Vats’ exit a few months ago. “But it’s to his credit that he handled my hiring the way he did. And how he kept the morale at the company high, during the tough times. The fact is that if you look at the past 18 months there are not too many exits. All the key people are there in the company.  it is a journey that all of us as a team have gone through. We all have tough times,” he shared.

He has been focused on building and strengthening the sales team, getting their trust, and bringing in processes and data mining and management into the sales efforts. Said he: “I think I have a job and a challenge at hand. My boss (Rahul Joshi) is a person who helps me in this journey, Rahul is also great person, he has a different kind of experience than what Sudhanshu Vats had. The last six months with him have s been good.”

He further added, “Both Sudhanshu Vats and Rahul Joshi are managers who let you build and drive your own strategies. Because then the onus is on you to deliver and it’s not like you can put your monkey on your boss’ back.”

Identify safe places to shoot, Maharashtra CM tells industry delegation

MUMBAI: A 12-member delegation of television producers and broadcasters on Friday interacted with Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray who asked them to find safe and secluded places for resuming shooting.

In the zoom call, Thackeray responded positively to the delegation’s concerns and demands and assured them that shooting can restart soon. He asked them to identify green zones/safe areas for resuming shooting.

The delegation apprised the chief minister the huge losses the industry has been incurring since the lockdown was imposed in March. The leaders shared with him the concerns of job losses and the industry’s wish to restart shooting with utmost care and by adhering to SOPs.

He quickly addressed all issues and asked his team to set up a committee and work out the possibilities to start shooting at the earliest. The industry has to find out studios away from civilization, list of necessary precautions to be taken and spacious post production studios where social distancing can be maintained.

Once this is done, the permission for the maintenance of sets, monsoon sheds, fire safety measures, etc. can be obtained. The shooting has to be conducted with minimum crew. Government officials will also be visiting Goregaon film city to examine its safety.

Those who attended the meeting included: Zee Entertainment Enterprises managing director and chief executive officer Puneet Goenka, Sony Pictures Networks managing director and chief executive N P Singh, Network18 MD Rahul Joshi, Star & Disney India head K Madhavan,  Zee Entertainment Enterprises CEO Punit Misra, Endemol Shine India CEO Abhishek Rege, TV producer Ekta Kapoor, Banijay Asia founder-CEO Deepak Dhar, actor-producer Adesh Bandekar, Dr Sanjay Mukharji, Vikas Gharelu, Sudhir Naik, IFTPC managing member Nitin Vaidya, and jd Majethia.

jd Majethia informed that the chief minister posed for a picture of the video conference meeting. “I was very happy to discover a hidden streak of our beloved CM’s sense of humour which kept everyone in the meeting comfortable. The chief minister concluded the meeting by asking us all to be positive and hopeful with a line of a song from film chhoti si baat “Aanewala pal jane wala hai,” said Majethia.

After several weeks of uncertainty, the television and broadcasting industry can finally heave a sigh of relief. Though an exact date has not been fixed yet, it is certain that production activities can resume soon.

  • I am not stepping into Arnab Goswami’s shoes at Times Now – Rajdeep Sardesai

I am not stepping into Arnab Goswami’s shoes at Times Now – Rajdeep Sardesai

MUMBAI: Arnab Goswami’s Times Now exit has sent tremors through the news television industry, something that many can’t believe as yet as his name was so strongly associated with the channel. Speculation is rife about who will be his replacement, and who will fill the big fat void that has been created owing to his departure. And, questions are being asked about where he is headed.

Among the names being mentioned as someone who will hop into his chair is that of Rajdeep Sardesai, who is currently with the Aroon Purie’s TV Today Network. Rajdeep cut his teeth early on in his career at The Times of India and ended up being the city editor of the Mumbai edition. So, it will be like a homecoming for him or so is what the grapevine is muttering.

Television happened, and the son of the former Indian test bat Dilip Sardesai, and even an Oxford cricketer himself, Rajdeep plunged heavily into it. After stints in NDTV, he went on to found the channel GBN (now CNN News18) before quitting and becoming the consulting editor at TV Today Network.

Rajdeep, however, was pretty candid when indiantelevision.com got in touch with him about the strong buzz that he was replacing Arnab as the editor-in-chief at Times Now. “Rubbish,” he said. “I  have not even met anyone for anything of that kind to happen. I am just coming back from a teaching assignment in Georgetown, and there is no way  that I will step in for Arnab. At least for now…”

That there is no love lost between the two is no doubt, but Arnab’s style of opinionated journalism is a total antithesis of what classical Rajdeep purports he practices.

Other names being bandied about include Barkha Dutt, and Rahul Joshi. The facts are not forthcoming as the Times Television Network has not put out an official statement as yet.

The expectation was that Rajdeep would reportedly  take over as  the Times Now editor-in-chief, and enable the smooth transition. When indiantelevision.com reached out to Times Network MD MK Anand, he said, “I have no comments to make at this juncture.”

Have we heard the last of L’affaire Arnab? Most unlikely as the media does indeed want to know! This time at least!
