  • Theatre’s role in cinema, where stage meets screen

Theatre’s role in cinema, where stage meets screen

MUMBAI: Curtains up, lights on, and action, but the roots of cinema lie on the stage. At a lively session on “The Power of Theatre in Cinema’s DNA,” celebrated actors and creators revealed how the world of theatre continues to shape the Indian screen.

Moderated by National School of Drama director Chittaranjan Tripathy, the panel featured Swanand Kirkire, Raghubir Yadav, Rajpal Yadav, and Mita Vashisht. The discussion explored how theatrical training provides actors with depth, discipline, and authenticity that resonate on screen.

Swanand Kirkire, a multi-talented lyricist, actor, and singer, called cinema an extension of theatre. “Drama happens in one space and one time on stage. Cinema takes the same drama and expands it across spaces and moments,” he said. He highlighted that every great film begins with understanding drama, the conflict between forces, and the forward motion of storytelling.

Raghubir Yadav stressed theatre’s irreplaceable role in building a performer. “You can do a play without cinema, but you cannot do a film without a play. Theatre gives you everything: emotion, nuance, life. Cinema may teach dialogue memorisation, but theatre teaches you living on stage,” he explained.

Rajpal Yadav reflected on theatre as a teacher of life itself. “The collaborative essence of stagecraft and how understanding every role, from actors to carpenters, enriches cinema. Theatre teaches zero, cinema teaches hero. When theatre and cinema come together, every element of performance becomes alive,” he said.

Mita Vashisht discussed the technical interplay between theatre and film. While theatre delivers a live connection with audiences, cinema requires technology to capture and convey the same energy. She also pointed out that concepts like framing, positioning of actors, and set design in cinema are borrowed directly from theatre, referencing techniques like Mise en Scène.

The session celebrated theatre as the backbone of cinema, emphasising that even with all the technology in modern filmmaking, the foundational lessons of stagecraft: discipline, collaboration, and emotional truth, remain essential. As Kirkire summarised, “Theatre gives cinema its DNA. Without it, the soul of performance is incomplete.”

From the intricacies of acting to the careful orchestration of a set, the discussion made it clear, the spotlight may have shifted from stage to screen, but the heart of storytelling continues to beat in the theatre.

  • Panchayat season 4 breaks records worldwide, Prime Video confirms season 5 for 2026

Panchayat season 4 breaks records worldwide, Prime Video confirms season 5 for 2026

MUMBAI: Panchayat has done it again only bigger, sharper, and more global than ever. The rural drama returned to Prime Video with season 4 on 24 June, and within days, shattered all previous franchise records, earning its highest-ever opening week.

From trending in over 42 countries to clocking streams in 180+ nations and 95 per cent of India’s pin codes, Panchayat is no longer just small-town storytelling, it’s a full-blown global phenomenon with an Indian accent.

The show anchored by its powerhouse cast including Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta, Raghubir Yadav, Faisal Malik, Sanvikaa, Chandan Roy, and others—struck a nostalgic, satirical chord once again, proving that real storytelling doesn’t need frills, just a filter-less view of rural India.

The fan-favourite series from TVF hit the Top 10 charts on Prime Video in the USA, UK, Canada, UAE, and Australia on launch day alone. In India, it promptly claimed the #1 trending spot and made its way into living rooms across nearly every corner of the country—from bustling metros to the most remote districts.

Since its debut in 2018, Panchayat has been more than just entertainment, it’s been a cultural mirror. Season 2 bagged the first-ever Best Web Series (OTT) Award at the 54th International Film Festival of India in 2023. Each season has built steadily on the last, but season 4 has truly pushed the envelope in terms of reach and resonance.

“We are absolutely delighted with the phenomenal response to Panchayat Season 4, which has further elevated the series’ stature and set new benchmarks for authentic storytelling,” said Prime Video India director & head – content licensing, Manish Menghani. “The season’s exceptional viewership across India and in over 180 countries within its launch week is a testament to its universal appeal and deep cultural resonance. With its heartfelt narrative and relatable characters, Panchayat has evolved into a global phenomenon, transcending borders and touching audiences with its warmth, simplicity, and authenticity. This milestone not only reflects the enduring love for the series but also reinforces the growing global appetite for rooted, Indian stories. We’re excited to share that work has already begun on Season 5, and we look forward to continuing the journey of Phulera and its beloved characters.”

“It has been a truly extraordinary journey collaborating with Prime Video to bring Panchayat to life and witness its incredible growth over the years,” said The Viral Fever (TVF) president, Vijay Koshy. “This series holds a special place in our hearts, as it beautifully captures the charm, humor, and nuances of rural India, celebrating the power of simple, human storytelling. Panchayat reflects the shared vision and values we hold with Prime Video: to tell meaningful, relatable stories that resonate with audiences across geographies. We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming love season 4 has received—not just from viewers across India, but from audiences around the world. A heartfelt thank you to the incredible cast and crew whose passion and dedication made this journey possible, and to the fans whose unwavering support continues to inspire us. We’re excited for what lies ahead and look forward to bringing season 5 to audiences in 2026.”

Whether it’s the deadpan delivery of Abhishek Tripathi, the wisdom of Manju Devi, or the bureaucratic chaos of Phulera, Panchayat continues to thrive on a rare blend of wit, heart, and hyperlocal relatability.

As development on season 5 kicks off, one thing’s clear: in the age of high-stakes thrillers and big-budget spectacles, Panchayat is the quiet revolution that just won’t stop trending.

  • Lauki meets cooker in Panchayat’s spicy Season 4 campaign blitz

Lauki meets cooker in Panchayat’s spicy Season 4 campaign blitz

MUMBAI: What do you get when lauki meets pressure cooker? A full-blown election dhamaka, of course. But this time, the cooker isn’t in the kitchen, it’s on billboards, in street installations, and it’s whistling louder than Phulera’s political tempers. Ahead of Panchayat Season 4’s release on June 24, Prime Video is turning up the heat with a brilliantly desi OOH campaign across cities. At Patna’s Marine Drive, Indore’s Chappan Dukan, and Lucknow’s buzzing 1090 Chauraha, unsuspecting passersby were met with massive laukis being squashed by equally massive pressure cookers or vice versa. The lauki isn’t going down without a fight.

The high-decibel marketing complete with hoardings that blow a real seeti every few hours plays up the season’s central conflict: Kranti Devi vs. the OG Pradhan. The quirky slogan game is also strong: Banrakas ka Vaar, Ya Pradhan ka Prahaar? and Kaun Hogi Phulera Ki Queen? echo across installations, channeling every bit of small-town poll drama with spicy flair.

It’s political theatre with a legume twist, reflecting the heartland chaos Panchayat fans love. If lauki symbolises old-school values and calm, the cooker is all pressure and power play and Phulera’s streets are the new battleground.

Returning with its signature warmth and satire, the series stars Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta, Raghubir Yadav, Faisal Malik and more. Created by Deepak Kumar Mishra and Chandan Kumar, the show is ready to serve a fourth helping of heartfelt hilarity. And if the campaign is any hint, this season’s narrative will be just as cooked, crisp, and chaotic.

So mark the date, because Panchayat isn’t just streaming, it’s steaming.

  • Topps Sports & Entertainment launches TVC Cricket Attax 2013

MUMBAI: Topps Sports & Entertainment has launched a television commercial for its IPL 6 trading card game Cricket Attax 2013.

The 45 second long TV Commercial has been created by Tailor India and directed by Sudip Bandopadhyay of Thumbnail Pictures and the track has been sung by the Raghubir Yadav.

Topps (India) CEO Sanjeev Katyal said, “The vision of the brand is to take imagery and likability of Cricket Attax to the next level, and make it a cult brand and position it at a scale worthy of the league itself. (We wish to) To convey the fun aspects of the game to the young ones as well as appeal to parents for the skill, strategy and memory building features of the game.”

Topps (India) senior manager marketing and sales Mukesh Jagwani added , “This year’s strategy is to connect with target audience over the emotional benefit that Cricket Attax enables you to relive the IPL experience at home and the self-expressive benefit, that you have the power to literally control and own the league and its super-star cricketers.”

The TVC shows an interesting cricket match between two teams where the batsman hits a six on the first ball and the cheer girls start dancing but at the end of the TVC it has shown that the two kids are enjoying while performing the puppet show.

“The creative idea builds on the strategy by celebrating the kids who behave as owner-selector-captain in their own dream world. The kids call the shots by deciding how many spinners to play, who bats in which position, when to take power play etc. Hence, the idea of kathputli was born”, explains Tailor India co-founder Kaushik Mitra.

Cricket Attax 3 is a game aimed at children in the age group of 8-12 that allows them to collect cards, exchange them, build a dream team and then go around playing the game with their friends.

  • Arjun is a visual delight

    Arjun is a visual delight

MUMBAI: Now that mythological films can no longer be made for mainstream, they provide ample material for animation films. Indian mythology is full of heroes so there is no need to create more. Arjun is one such here. Here the character has been singled out from the five Pandavs and the Mahabharat to tell his story alone.

    Producer: Ronnie Screwvala,Siddharth Roy Kapur.
    Director: Arnab Chaudhuri.

The cousins, Pandavs and Kauravs, are under the tutelage of Guru Drona in mastering the art of warfare. During the archery lessons, the guru wants a bird roosting on the tree to be shot through the eye. While Arjun has only the bird‘s eye in his target, the rest of the pupils are not so committed. This, while establishing Arjun‘s mastery and his future as a great warrior, also shows the jealousy and deceit of Kauravs. In another contest, a chariot race, Duryodhan, the lead Kaurav, tries to kill Bheem, Arjun‘s brother.

The film proceeds to tell the story of the Pandavs‘ banishment from Hastinapur to a barren place where they go on to build a beautiful kingdom called Indraprastha. But they are driven away from there too following a gamble in a game of choupad. They are banished to 12 years in exile and a year further incognito when they should not be recognised by anyone. In this duration, Arjun takes up a challenge at the Draupadi swayamvar and wins her as his bride.

While building Indraprastha, the Pandavs have Lord Krishna by their side protecting them against evils perpetuated by Kauravs. The crucial time comes when Pandavs are on the last phase of their exile and Duryodhan tries all his guile to make them surface and be recognised so they can be exiled for a further 12 years. His ploy is foiled with the help from Krishna. The great battle of Mahabharat is not dealt with here.

The story is told in a patchy manner. Also left out are parts about Kunti asking all brothers to share equally what they have brought home, which happens to be Draupadi. She is projected here as belonging only to Arjun. Also left out is the sequence about Draupadi‘s cheerharan. The other characters apparently do not merit introductions, as it is assumed that the viewer knows about them. The visuals are delightful. Musical score is functional.

Arjun has its best chance at the box office over the weekend with IPL final game on Sunday being a formidable opposition to face.

    Noble effort falls short

    Producer: Hemendra Aran.
    Director: Gitanjali Sinha.
Cast: Raghubir Yadav, Raj Tandon, Anaya Anand, Yashpal Sharma, Manjusha Godse, Kishor Nadalskar,
Nitin Kerur, Aditya Sidhu, Gulshan Pandey.

Yeh Khula Aasmaan deals with the dilemma of a teenager whose parents have gone abroad for work. The boy is left to find his own way in his pursuit of education, entry to IIT and life generally. Juxtaposed with this is the lonely grandfather who thinks the boy also needs to enjoy life in native India and tries to imbibe in him all things Indian, including the family passion of kite flying.

Raj Tandon has to fulfil huge expectations of his UK-based parents, Yashpal Sharma and Manjusha Godse, who prefer the colour of the pound sterling over the rupee and migrate to UK. Tandon fails to get into IIT and also gets poor grades in high school. Dejected, he seeks solace under the care of his paternal granddad, Raghubir Yadav. This gives a purpose to the granddad, who has been leading a lonely life in Bhagalpur in a huge haveli ever since his son left.

Raghubir Yadav picks up from where he left off when he used to dote on Raj Tandon as child. He wants his ward to wander in the wildness and enjoy the open skies. He puts him in the care of neighbourhood girl, Anya Anand. As the duo enjoy small town life and become closer to each other, the traditional kite flying competition and the running family rivalry between Raghubir Yadav and Gulshan Pandey resurfaces. Initiating Raj Tandon into kite flying and finally giving him the confidence to win is what Yeh Khula Aasmaan is all about.

Even as the intentions are noble, the identification with today‘s metro generation is limited. Also the kite flying part is too long in an era of ‘instant‘. Gitanjali Sinha, who has embarked on a mission to promote films which find a balance between art and masala, has to make sure that her film caters to the money-spending viewer in cities. Alas, kite scenes don‘t pass the scrutiny of the lover of this sport. Nonetheless, her eye for details of small town life is praiseworthy.

Music by Anand Milind is soothing but short of haunting. Dialogue is sensible. Editing needed to be crisper.

Rakhtbeej is amateur on all counts

    Producer: Om Sai Jyoti Films.
    Director: Anil Balani.
Cast: Maanas, Sayantani Nandi, Mansi Dovhal, Rajesh Khattar, Tinu Anand, K Jeeva, Sanjay Gagnani, Julia Dutta, Amanjot, Yatin Karyekar.

Rakhtbeej seems to be one from the cottage industry of films that are made by an individual with his own resources to promote himself. Manas would normally pass for a trader or a shopkeeper but here he plays parallel roles of Abhay Singh Jatav and Ajay; the former a simpleton turned dacoit and latter as his son, a celebrity CEO in Mumbai (if such creatures do exist in corporate world). Though a few decades apart, both stories are told simultaneously.

Ajay cracks the telecom domain deal for his company, which is distressing for the head of a rival company. Ajay has stolen a march over his rival by quoting zero charge for talking on cell phone since he expects his company to reap the benefits accruing out of other growing markets like tele-banking, SMS and so on. This makes Ajay not only win over his boss and boss‘ daughter‘s heart but also headlines in national dailies. The boss, Rajesh Khattar, appoints Ajay the new CEO of the company, in the process earning him an enemy in Dharam, a colleague.

While the boss‘s daughter, Mansi Dovhal, may love Ajay, her love is one-sided because he has fallen deeply in love with Priya, a model he met on an ad shoot. He is unaware that Priya is a honey trap set up by Dharam to belittle Ajay in the eyes of the boss.

The story of Abhay Jatav is on similar lines. He joins a dacoit gang after his father is killed and he is humiliated. When he sees the gang leader ill-treat other members who actually do all the hard work, he can‘t bear it. He kills the leader and is duly proclaimed the new leader by Julia Dutta, a fellow gang member, who loves him. However, Abhay Jatav has met and fallen in love with Amanjot.

Both, father and son share same fate. But while the father‘s detractors succeed in backstabbing and killing him, the son Ajay is spared that fate. He survives and finds his lost love as well as the ‘celebrated CEO‘ post.

Rakhtbeej is an amateur attempt on all fronts. Moreover, there is no glamour or beauty on screen and an item number by Rakhee Sawant only adds to the torture. It is an exercise in self-gratification.

  • Top honours at Haryana fest for film on kite flying

Top honours at Haryana fest for film on kite flying

MUMBAI: Filmmaker Gitanjali Sinha’s Yeh Khula Aasmaan has received top honours at the Haryana Film Festival that ended recently.

Starring Raghubir Yadav and Yashpal Sharma, the film revolves around a kid learning how to soar again like a kite, notwithstanding his academic failures.

Yeh Khula Aasman revolves around Avinash, a 12th standard student staying alone in a metro city, who does not do too well in his exams. His career-oriented parents compromise on their parenthood responsibilities to take up permanent residence in London, leaving Avinash to fend for himself in an emotional vacuum.

Unable to take peer and parental pressure to excel in studies and bereft of any true friends, Avinash becomes lonely and hence depressed. He decides to escape his routine and visit his grandfather who has been staying alone in a small town in North India.

What happens when Dadu realises the fragile mental state of Avinash forms the crux of the film.

In short, the film is a relationship-based motivational film that touches the audience of all ages with specific message to both the youth and their parents.
