    BBC World leads international news channels during Indian elections

    MUMBAI: BBC World was the most watched international news channel during India’s recent general elections, according to Tam Peoplemeter data.

    During the four-week campaign, BBC World reached a total of 15 million viewers, three times the figure achieved by its nearest rival CNN. Each of BBC World’s viewers spent an average of 50 per cent longer tuned into the channels comprehensive and extended coverage of the poll, compared to those who were watching CNN, according to a press release.

    The research also claims that about 1.5 million people in India watched BBC World’s election programming on 13 May, the day on which the results were announced. The channel also managed to attracted 94 per cent of the overall viewing to the two channels that day.

    BBC World’s balanced perspective on the domestic and global implications of the nationwide poll resulted in a six per cent increase in reach, and a 20 per cent rise in the time spent watching the channel, among Sec group A. BBC World’s reach and viewing time came in ahead of CNN in all Secs across India, the release claims.

    BBC World India research manager Dezma de Melo was quoted as saying, “These are fantastic results. The growth in viewership is a result of BBC World’s live reporting, regular hourly news updates and special analysis on programmes including Asia Today, Asia Business Report and Question Time India. The Indian news industry is highly competitive today and BBC World’s success is a reflection of our credibility and the demand from viewers in India for a global perspective.”

    Dileep Padgaonkar to present Question Time India

    MUMBAI: A new series of the panel discussion programme Question Time India has begun on BBC World.
    New presenter Dileep Padgaonkar will be inviting India’s top politicians and personalities to analyse and debate the leading stories each week as the country prepares for the general elections, due to be held later this year. Dileep has worked for The Times of India for a total of 24 years, starting as a foreign correspondent in Paris and working up to become Editor in 1988. He continues to be a Consulting Editor and is still one of the newspaper’s regular columnists.
    The new series kicked off last night (Friday 6 February) at 10 pm.

    ‘Question Time India’ returns to BBC World

    MUMBAI: A new series of the panel discussion programme Question Time India begins on BBC World tonight 6 February at 10 pm.

    The new presenter Dileep Padgaonkar will invite the country’s top politicians and personalities to analyse and debate the leading stories each week as the country prepares for the general elections, due to be held later this year. Tonight the guests include former Cabinet Minister and the BJP’s general secretary Pramod Mahajan and former prime minister I.K. Gujral.
    They will discuss a range of issues, including whether the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will be re-elected this year, the revelations surrounding Pakistan’s nuclear leaks and the level of trust between India and Pakistan.
    On the announcement by the Pakistani scientist, Abdul Qadeer Khan, that he shared secrets about his country’s nuclear weapons Gujral says: “It is not a revelation. We all knew it because this was known all the time that the deals with these countries Iran, Libya and North Korea are being made.
    “Only those sitting in Washington did not want to see it. They knew but did not want to see it. We pointed out time and again that Pakistan does not have any autonomous nuclear programme. But they would not listen. And now the situation is out.”
