adidas, Rohit Sharma team up in quest to end plastic waste

Mumbai: Sportswear brand adidas has been an advocate of ending plastic waste in the oceans for many years now. Echoing this thought, the Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma was spotted wearing spikes with the ‘End Plastic Waste’ message in Mumbai Indians’ match on 24 April.

Designed by Aaquib Wani with inputs from Rohit himself, the shoe emphasises on saving our oceans, through an interesting piece of shoe art that showcases a whale along with red sea corals and plants.

The country’s ace cricketer will continue to don these shoes through the remainder of the IPL season to promote his goal of ‘Ending Plastic Waste.’ With this initiative, Rohit takes the field to bat for a cause- for every run he scores adidas India will pick up 10 plastic bottles from the beaches of Mumbai. The move promoted through exquisite ocean-artwork on the shoe, carries forward the message of ‘Together Impossible is Nothing.’

Interestingly, Rohit had earlier walked onto the field like a man on a mission with his ‘Save the Rhinos’ message from last year’s IPL.

The Rolling Stones, BB King, Snoop Dogg and James Blunt are some of the world’s biggest musical stars who join Richard Quest in his search for rhythm in this month’s QUEST on CNN.

Legendary rock stars The Rolling Stones were recently granted permission to perform in China and Richard meets up with Mick, Keith, Ronnie and Charlie as they embark on a global tour and prepare to play in Shanghai. Also in Shanghai, Richard discovers that China has its own rock god in the form of singer Cui Jian.

He then heads off to the MTV Asia Music Awards in Sydney where he meets critically acclaimed rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg and forms part of his entourage on the red carpet. He also talks to British chart sensation James Blunt about his phenomenal success and best-selling album.

Continuing on his quest for music, Richard travels to Los Angeles to meet up with Oscar-winning songwriter Diane Warren. Recognised as the pre-eminent songwriter of her generation, Warren has written songs for acts as diverse as Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Meatloaf and Cher, resulting in more than 90 top ten hits in the US and the UK alone. Warren gives him a lesson in song writing and shows him the ingredients needed to make a hit record.

Richard then takes his song to LA Reid, the head of Def Jam Records in Los Angeles.

Rapper Kanye West and soul diva Mariah Carey are just two of the star names on his books and he can make or break a music career by pressing ‘play’ or ‘eject’. He tells Richard what makes a successful musician and how to get a start in the often cut throat business.

The ‘King of Blues’ BB King talks to Richard as he prepares for his 10,000th live performance at the NEC Arena in Birmingham, England. 2006 has been a landmark year for the legendary 80 year old bluesman whose musical journey has taken him from sharecropping in Mississippi to the concert halls of the world and 14 Grammy Awards.

New York’s famous Juilliard School of Music is also celebrating a birthday. Richard witnesses the school mark its 100th anniversary with a star-studded concert of alumni, including greats from the worlds of jazz and classical music, such as trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, violinist Itzhak Pearlman and America’s top soprano Renee Fleming.

    AIRTIMES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE

  • ‘Quest’ goes in search of spirituality in March

Airtimes: Indian Standard Times Saturday, March 25 at 1630hrs Sun, March 26 at 1130am and 1730hrs From the gurus and ashrams of India to New York’s very own brand of spirituality, CNN’s Richard Quest goes in search of inner peace in March’s edition of QUEST.

Despite all of life’s luxury and convenience, people are often overworked, over-stressed and ultimately unfulfilled. Quest talks to his Holiness the Dalai Lama, actress Goldie Hawn, musician Cat Stevens, also known as Yusuf Islam, and cult film director David Lynch to discover how they make their worlds a happier and more peaceful place.

Quest’s journey begins with a pilgrimage to the remote village of Dharamsala in the Himalayan foothills of India, home to the 14th Dalai Lama. His Holiness tells Quest how he manages to cultivate inner peace.

In her apartment 54 floors above Manhattan, New York City, actress Goldie Hawn talks to Quest about becoming a ‘Jew Bu’ – her conversion from Judaism to Buddhism and explains how she found a spiritual path away from Hollywood. Back in London, UK, Quest is captivated by Karen Armstrong’s story. The so-called ‘run-away nun’ broke away from a strict Catholic upbringing to become one of the world’s foremost authors on world religion.

Pop star Cat Stevens, also known Yusuf Islam, tells Quest that God is indispensable to a spiritual life. However according to scientist and prominent atheist Professor Richard Dawkins, it’s best to look for answers not in heaven, but in the world around us when it comes to inner peace. Quest also hears from cult film director David Lynch, who argues that “a spiritual nirvana lies inside us – all you need to do is ‘dive inside’ through transcendental meditation or TM.”

Quest’s journey ends where it began – in India. Outside the southern city of Bangalore, the Art of Living Foundation is preparing to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Over a million dedicated followers travel from all corners of the globe to join in the festivities and pay homage to their spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. To many, Shankar’s blend of philosophy, meditation and breathing exercises make him a messiah. But some sceptics think he is too self-promoting and offers false hope to lost souls. Either way, this modern spiritual movement symbolises a desire for inner peace and the anniversary event promises to be a party that Quest will never forget.
