    Q3-2016: B.A.G. Films revenue up 12.5%

    BENGALURU: B A G Films and Media Limited (BAG Films) reported 12.5 per cent higher quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) revenue (net Total Income from Operations, TIO) for the quarter ended 31 December, 2016 (Q3-2016, current quarter) at Rs 28.07 crore as compared to Rs 24.95 crore. Year-on year (YoY) TIO in the current quarter however declined 8.6 per cent from Rs 30.70 crore.

    BAG Films reported Profit after Tax (PAT) for the current quarter at Rs 0.48 crore (1.7 per cent margin) as compared to a loss of Rs 3.66 crore in the immediate trailing quarter and more than double YoY profit as compared to Rs 0.22 crore (0.7 per cent margin) in Q3-2015. EBIDTA in the current quarter at Rs 8.97 crore (31.9 per cent margin) was more than double (2.3 times) the Rs 3.93 crore (15.8 per cent margin) in Q2-2016 and 10.4 per cent more than the Rs 8.12 crore (26.4 per cent margin) in the corresponding prior year quarter.

    BAG Films major segment, Television Broadcasting (TV segment) reported four per cent QoQ growth in segment revenue at Rs 22.53 crore (80.3 per cent of TI) as compared to Rs 21.66 crore (86.8 per cent of TIO), but a 6.5 per cent YoY revenue decline from Rs 24.08 crore (82.8 per cent of TIO).

    BAG Films TV segment reported 45.9 per cent QoQ growth in operating profit at Rs 7.40 crore as compared to Rs 5.07 crore, but a 20.5 per cent YoY drop in operating profit as compared to the Rs 59.30 crore.

    Its other major segment, FM Radio (Radio Dhamaal) reported 1.8 per cent QoQ drop in operating revenue growth at Rs 2.18 crore (7.8 per cent of TIO) as compared to Rs 2.22 crore (8.9 per cent of TIO) and 10 per cent YoY decline in revenue as compared to Rs 2.43 crore (7.9 per cent of TIO).

    Operating profit in Q3-2016 was less than a third (down 68.1 per cent) QoQ at Rs 0.23 crore as compared to Rs 0.73 crore and less than a fourth (down 75.5 per cent) YoY as compared to Rs 0.94 crore in Q2-2015.

    Let us look at the other numbers reported by B. A. G. Films:

    B. A. G. Films total expenditure in the current quarter at Rs 23.12 crore (82.4 per cent of TIO) was 6.1 per cent lower QoQ than Rs 24.62 crore (98.7 per cent of TIO) and was 12.4 per cent lower than the Rs 26.40 crore (98.4 per cent of TIO), but increased four per cent YoY from Rs 23.67 crore (86 per cent of TIO).

    Employee Cost in Q3-2016 at Rs 5.03 crore (17.9 per cent of TIO) was 4.3 per cent higher QoQ than Rs 4.82 crore (19.3 per cent of TIO) and almost flat YoY (increased 0.1 per cent higher) that Rs 5.02 crore (17.1 per cent of TIO).

    Segment Numbers

    The company has mentioned five segments in its financial results. They are Audio-Visual Production (AVP); Movies: Leasing; FM Radio; and Television Broadcasting. While B.A.G. Films Movies segment made no contribution to the company’s revenue or operating results in the current quarter, Q2-2015 or Q2-2016, FM Radio and TV Broadcasting segment numbers have already been mentioned above.

    Audio Visual Production segment (AVP segment)

    AVP segment reported a more than triple (3.3 times) revenue in Q3-2016 at Rs 3.29 crore as compared to Rs 1 crore in Q2-2016, but a 17.6 per cent YoY decline as compared to the Rs 4 crore in Q3-2015. The segment reported an operating profit in Q3-2016 of Rs 1.72 crore as compared to a loss of Rs 0.66 crore in the previous quarter, but a 15.2 per cent YoY decline as compared to an operating profit of Rs 2.03 crore in Q3-2015.

    Leasing segment (The numbers for this segment are mentioned in lakh – 100 lakh = 1 crore)

    BAG Films leasing segment reported revenue of just Rs 6.4 lakh in the current quarter as compared to Rs 6.95 lakh in the previous quarter and Rs 19.8 lakh in Q3-2015. The segment reported an operating loss of Rs 110.23 lakh as compared to an operating loss of Rs 82.63 lakh in Q2-2016 and an operating loss of Rs 83.46 lakh in Q3-2015.

    BENGALURU: Prime Focus Limited (PFL) reported 47 per cent YoY revenue growth for the quarter ending 31 December, 2015 (Q2-2016, current quarter) at Rs 468.52 crore from Rs 318.67 crore in Q2-2015 and 4.4 per cent higher QoQ as compared to Rs 448.57 crore in the immediate trailing quarter. The company reported more than double (2.02 times) YoY EBITA at Rs 75.56 crore (15.3 per cent margin) as compared to Rs 35.48 crore (11.1 per cent margin) and 37.4 per cent higher QoQ as compared to Rs 52.07 crore (11.6 per cent margin).

    (2) The company had filed results for a fifteen month period ended June 30, 2014, hence YoY comparison is being done between Q2-2016 and Q2-2015 and QoQ comparison is between Q2-2016 and Q1-2016 (quarter ended September, 2015).

    The company reported a lower net loss of Rs 11.40 crore in Q2-2016, a loss of Rs 36.17 crore in Q2-2015 and a loss of Rs 22.51 crore in Q1-2016. 

    Let us look at the other numbers reported by PFL

    Figures A and B below show PFL’s major expense heads. As is obvious, a major expense head for the company is employee benefit expense or EBE.

    PFL’s EBE in Q2-2016 at Rs 284.10 crore (62.4 per cent of TIO) was 43.8 per cent higher YoY as compared to Rs 197.54 crore and (62 per cent of TIO) and was almost flat (went up by 0.5 per cent) QoQ as compared to Rs 282.57 crore (61.6 per cent of TIO).

    Technician’s Fees in the current quarter increased 19.6 per cent YoY to Rs 7.88 crore (1.7 per cent of TIO) as compared to Rs 6.35 crore (2.1 per cent of TIO), but declined 19.3 per cent QoQ from Rs 9.77 crore (2.2 per cent of TIO).

    Fig B indicates that EBE also shows a linear upward trend in terms of percentage of TIO over the twelve quarters starting Q4-2013 until the current quarter Q2-2016. EBE has been the highest in Q2-2016 (62.4 per cent) in terms of absolute rupees, but in terms of percentage of TIO, it was highest in Q3-2015 at 64 per cent.

    Finance and Interest cost in Q12-2016 at Rs 25.11 crore (5.4 per cent of TIO) increased 45.3 per cent YoY from Rs 17.28 crore (5.4 per cent of TIO) and increased 41.4 per cent QoQ from Rs 17.75 crore (four per cent of TIO).

    BENGALURU: B.A.G. Films and Media Limited (B.A.G. Films) FM Radio segment reported 25.9 per cent YoY operating revenue growth for the quarter ended 30 September, 2015 (Q2-2016, current quarter) at Rs 2.22 crore (8.9 per cent of Total Income from Operations or TIO) as compared to Rs 1.77 crore (5.1 per cent of TIO).

     

    The FM Radio segment’s operating revenue in the current quarter also increased 40.8 per cent QoQ from Rs 1.58 crore (6.1 per cent of TIO). B.A.G. Films’ FM radio network Dhamaal 24 (106.4 FM), which was launched in 2005, operates 10 stations in India.

    The FM Radio segment reported almost threefold (up 2.9 times) operating profit in the current quarter at Rs 0.73 crore as compared to the Rs 0.25 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter. The segment had reported an operating loss of Rs 0.24 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    B.A.G. Films other major segment, Television Broadcasting (TV segment) reported two per cent YoY growth in segment revenue at Rs 21.66 crore (86.8 per cent of TIO) as compared to the Rs 21.22 crore (64.7 per cent of TIO) and a 4.7 per cent QoQ revenue growth from Rs 20.69 crore (79.7 per cent of Total Income from Operations or TIO).

     

    B.A.G. Films TV segment reported 14.2 per cent YoY drop in operating profit at at Rs 5.07 crore as compared to the Rs 5.91 crore and a 37.3 per cent QoQ drop from Rs 8.08 crore.

     

    B.A.G. Films TIO in the current quarter at Rs 24.94 crore dropped 23.9 per cent YoY as compared to the Rs 32.80 and dropped 3.9 per cent from Rs 25.96 crore in the immediate preceding quarter.

     

    Let’s look at the other numbers reported by B.A.G. Films:

     

    B.A.G. Films reported a higher loss of Rs 3.66 crore in the current quarter as compared to the Rs 2.93 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter and a loss of Rs 1 crore in Q1-2016.

     

    The company’s simple EBIDTA calculated without including other income in the current quarter at Rs 3.93 crore (15.8 per cent margin) declined 9.3 per cent as compared to the Rs 4.34 crore (13.2 per cent margin) in Q2-2015 and was 35.1 per cent lower than the Rs 6.06 crore (23.3 per cent margin) in Q1-2016.

     

    B.A.G. Films’ total expenditure in the current quarter at Rs 24.62 crore (98.7 per cent of TIO) was 23.7 per cent lower than the Rs 32.27 crore (98.4 per cent of TIO), but increased four per cent QoQ from Rs 23.67 crore (91.2 per cent of TIO).

     

    Employee Cost in Q2-2016 at Rs 4.82 crore (19.3 per cent of TIO) increased 1.5 per cent YoY from Rs 4.75 crore (14.5 per cent of IO) and was 1.7 per cent more than Rs 4.74 crore (18.2 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2016.

    AVP segment reported a 78.3 per cent decline in revenue in Q2-2016 at Rs 1 crore as compared to the Rs 4.60 crore in Q2-2015 and 72.2 per cent decline from Rs 3.60 crore in Q1-2016. The segment reported an operating loss of Rs 0.66 crore in the current quarter as compared to an operating profit of Rs 1.98 crore in Q2-2015 and an operating profit of Rs 2.24 crore in Q1-2016.

    B.A.G. Films leasing segment reported revenue of just Rs 6.95 lakh in the current quarter as compared to the Rs 15.65 lakh in Q2-2015 and Rs 9.97 lakh in the preceding quarter. The segment reported an operating loss of Rs 82.63 lakh in Q2-2016 as compared to an operating loss of Rs 88.64 lakh in the corresponding year ago quarter and an operating loss of Rs 93.20 lakh in the immediate trailing quarter.

    BENGALURU: Indian motion picture exhibition, production and distribution house PVR Limited (PVR) reported more than fourfold increase in profit after tax (PAT) in the quarter ended 30 September, 2015 (Q2-2016, current quarter) as compared to the corresponding year ago quarter. PVR’s PAT for Q2-2016 at Rs 41.05 crore (8.6 per cent margin) was 4.46 times the PAT of Rs 9.20 crore (2.1 per cent margin) reported for Q2-2015, but 29.3 per cent lower than the Rs 58.45 crore (12 per cent margin) in Q1-2016.

    Total Income from Operations (TIO) in Q2-2016 at Rs 474.60 crore was 18.9 per cent more YoY than Rs 399.30 crore, but declined 2.3 per cent QoQ from Rs 486.02 crore.

     

    Box Office performance

     

    PVR’s top five box office performers in terms of Gross Box Office (GBO) were: Bajrangi Bhaijan (GBO Rs 72.02 crore, 34.8 lakh admits, average ticket price or ATP – Rs 207); Baahubali – The Beginning (GBO Rs 48.54 crore, 27.9 lakh admits, ATP – Rs 174); Welcome Back (GBO Rs 22.16 crore, 11.5 lakh admits, ATP – Rs 193); Drishyam (GBO Rs 18.74 crore, 10.3 lakh admits, ATP 0 Rs 183) and MI Rogue Nation (GBO Rs 17.99 crore, 8.5 lakh admits, ATP – Rs 212).

     

    Net Box Office (NBO) collections in the current quarter increased 20.3 per cent to Rs 274.55 crore (59.5 per cent of Total Revenue) as compared to the Rs 228.15 crore (61.5 per cent of Total Revenue) in Q2-2015 and flat as compared to the Rs 249.12 crore (59.3 per cent of Total Revenue) in Q1-2016.

     

    Q2-2016 saw admits increasing by 20 per cent to 1.88 crore with an occupancy of 37 per cent as compared to 1.57 crore with an occupancy of 32 per cent in Q2-2015 buts declined slightly QoQ a as compared to 1.90 crore and an occupancy rate of 38 per cent. ATP in the current quarter also improved to Rs 187 from Rs 181 in Q2-2015 and Rs 183 in Q1-2016.

     

    Food and Beverages and Advertisement revenue

     

    Food and Beverage (F&B) share of Total Revenue was 25.9 per cent at Rs 119.59 crore as compared to 24.5 per cent at Rs 90.81 crore in Q2-2015 and 28 per cent at Rs 117.87 crore in Q1-2016. Advertising share to revenue in the current quarter dropped in percentage terms to 10 per cent but increased in value terms to Rs 46..13 crore as compared to 10.9 per cent (Rs 40.65 crore) in Q2-2015 and was slightly higher in percentage terms than 9.9 per cent (Rs 41.62 crore) in the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    Let us look at the other numbers reported by PVR

     

    The company has reported positive operating results in Q2-2015 from Movie Exhibition segment at Rs 61.90 crore, which was more than double (2.34 times) the Rs 26.46 crore in Q2-2015, but declined 23.1 per cent as compared to the Rs 80.54 crore in Q1-2016.

     

    Movie production and distribution (Production) as well as ‘Others,’ which includes bowling, gaming and restaurant services, etc., reported operating losses in the current quarter as compared to the operating profits in the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    PVR’s Production segment operating revenue declined by more than half (down 54.6 per cent) to Rs 8.56 crore as compared to the Rs 18.87 crore in Q2-2015, but was 13.7 per cent more than the Rs 7.53 crore in the immediate trailing quarter. The segment reported operating loss of Rs 0.46 crore in the current quarter as compared to an operating profit of Rs 1.34 crore in Q2-2015 and an operating profit of Rs 1.87 crore in Q1-2016.

     

    ‘Others’ segment reported a 4.7 per cent increase in YoY revenue in the current quarter to Rs 19.05 crore as compared to Rs 18.19 crore in Q2-2015, but a 11.2 per cent decline as compared to the Rs 21.46 crore in Q1-2015. The segment returned an operating loss of Rs 0.65 crore in the current quarter as compared to an operating loss of Rs 0.96 crore in Q2-2015 and an operating profit of Rs 0.82 crore in the previous quarter.

     

    Total expense in Q2-2016 at Rs 413.83 crore (87.2 per cent of TIO) was 11.2 per cent more YoY than the Rs 372.07 crore (93.18 per cent of TIO) and 2.7 per cent more QoQ than the Rs 402.77 crore (82.9 per cent of TIO).

     

    The company’s film exhibition cost increased 21.7 per cent YoY at Rs 113.53 crore (23.9 per cent of TIO) as compared to Rs 93.25 crore (23.4 per cent of TIO) and was almost flat QoQ as compared to Rs Rs 113.69 crore (23.4 per cent of TIO).

     

    F&B and other cost in Q2-2016 increased 11.7 per cent YoY to Rs 32.01 crore (6.7 per cent of TIO) as compared to Rs 28.65 crore (7.2 per cent of TIO) and was 7.5 per cent lower than the Rs 34.59 crore (7.1 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2015.

     

    Other expense in Q2-2016 declined 4.3 per cent to Rs 43.51 crore (9.2 per cent of TIO) as compared to the Rs 45.46 crore (11.4 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015, but was 15.3 per cent more than the Rs 37.72 crore (7.8 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2016.

    BENGALURU: Bajaj Corp Limited spent a higher YoY amount towards marketing in the quarter ended 30 September, 2015 (Q2-2016, current quarter), but QoQ these spends were lower.

    Bajaj Corp’s marketing or Advertisement and Sales Promotion (ASP) expense comprises of two parts – Advertisement Spends (Ad Sp) and Sales Promotion Spends (SP Sp).     Marketing Expenses

    Bajaj Corp spent Rs 35.26 crore (16.9 per cent of Operating Revenue or Total Income from Operations or TIO) in Q2-2016, which was 5.4 per cent more than the Rs 33.44 crore (17.8 per cent of TIO) in the corresponding quarter of the previous year but 13.2 per cent less as compared to the Rs 40.60 crore (18.5 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2016. Please refer to Fig A below.

    Bajaj Corp’s SP Sp in Q2-2016 at Rs 24.36 crore (11.7 per cent of TIO) was 15.7 per cent more than the Rs 21.06 crore (11.2 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015 and was 21.3 per cent more than the Rs 25.32 crore (11.6 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2016.

    Advertisement Expense down

    The company’s Ad Sp in the current quarter at Rs 10.90 crore (5.2 per cent of TIO) was 12 per cent lower than the Rs 12.38 crore (6.6 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015 and 13.2 per cent lower than the Rs 15.28 crore (7 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2016. 

    During the fifteen quarter period starting Q4-2012 until Q2-2016 (current quarter), Bajaj Corp’s ASP has been the highest in terms of absolute rupees in Q4-2015 at Rs 40.92 crore (17.6 per cent of TIO). The company’s highest ASP during the period under consideration in terms of percentage of TIO was in Q3-2015 at 19.6 per cent of TIO (Rs 40.24 crore). The lowest ASP during the period under consideration in terms of absolute rupees as well as percentage of TIO was in Q1-2013 at Rs 17.36 crore and 12.6 per cent of TIO.

    Bajaj Corp’s highest Ad Sp in absolute rupees during the period under consideration was in Q3-2015 at Rs 17.56 crore (8.5 per cent of TIO), while the highest Ad Sp in terms of percentage of TIO was in Q1-2014 at 8.8 per cent (Rs 14.98 crore).

    Bajaj Corp’s highest SP Sp in terms of absolute rupees during the period under consideration was Rs 25.77 crore (10.9 per cent of TIO) in Q4-2015, while the highest SP Sp in terms of percentage of TIO was in Q3-2014 at 12.4 per cent (Rs 19.70 crore).

    During the fifteen quarter period under consideration, both ASP and SPSp show a linear increasing trend in terms of percentage of TIO, while AdSp in terms of percentage of TIO shows a slight declining trend.

    Revenue, profits

    Bajaj Corp TIO in Q2-2016 at Rs 208.18 crore was 10.7 per cent more than the Rs 188.06 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter, but was five per cent lower than the Rs 219.1 crore in Q1-2016.

    Profit after Tax (PAT) in Q2-2016 at Rs 46.78 crore (22.5 per cent of TIO) was 25 per cent more than the Rs 37.44 crore (19.9 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015 but 1.5 per cent lower than the Rs 47.51 crore (21.7 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2015. PAT in Q4-2015 was the highest in absolute rupees during the period under consideration. PAT in terms of percentage of TIO was highest at 28.5 per cent (Rs 42.20 crore) in Q3-2013.

    During the fifteen quarter period under consideration, both TIO and PAT in absolute rupees show a linear increasing trend, while PAT in terms of percentage of TIO shows a linearly declining trend.

    BENGALURU: Mobile music play service company OnMobile Global Limited (OnMobile) reported almost flat (decline of 0.2 per cent) consolidated revenue or Income from Operations (TIO) for the quarter ended 30 September, 2015 (Q2-2016, current quarter) at Rs 206.98 crore as compared to the Rs 207.45 crore in Q2-2015. TIO for the current quarter grew 2.6 per cent as compared to the Rs 201.82 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

    The company’s EBIDTA in the current quarter grew 41.7 per cent to Rs 39.34 crore (19 per cent margin) as compared to the Rs 27.77 crore (13.4 per cent margin) in the corresponding year ago quarter and was 12 per cent more than the Rs 35.12 crore (17.4 per cent margin) in the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    OnMobile reported profit after tax (PAT) of Rs 1.26 crore (0.6 per cent margin) in Q2-2016 as compared to a loss of Rs 1.21 crore in Q2-2015 and a loss of Rs 0.16 crore in Q1-2016.

     

    Business Performance

     

    OnMobile says that its International revenue grew by eight per cent YoY and 2.8 per cent QoQ. Europe recorded a revenue growth of 49.2 per cent YoY and 4.4 per cent QoQ, while in Other Emerging Markets, revenue grew by 6.7 per cent YoY and seven per cent QoQ to Rs 37.3 crore (18 per cent of TIO). 

     

    Its Latin America revenue was down by 1.5 per cent QoQ and 23.9 per cent YoY respectively. However, Latin America revenue grew by five per cent QoQ, excluding the forex impact of fluctuations in local currencies.

     

    India Business

     

    OnMobile’s India revenue was Rs 45.1 crore (21.8 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2016, a growth of 1.7 per cent QoQ and reduction of 21.6 per cent YoY. It says that it has won western circles from Airtel for Ring Back Tone business to become the largest Ring Back Tone partner for Airtel in India. OnMobile says that this win increases its reach in Airtel from over six crore subscribers to over 11.5 crore subscribers.

     

    The company says that CVAS, a direct to consumer product, has been launched in a large operator in India.

     

    Let us look at some of the other numbers reported by OnMobile

     

    Total Expenditure (TE) in the current quarter declined 5.2 per cent to Rs 204.74 crore (98.9 per cent of TIO) as compared to the Rs 215.92 crore (104.1 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015, but was 0.4 per cent more than the Rs 203.97 crore (101.1 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2016.

     

    A major expense head for the company is Content Fee and Royalty (CFR). OnMobile paid 41.3 per cent higher CFR in the current quarter at Rs 67.55 crore (32.6 per cent of TIO) as compared to the Rs 47.79 crore (23 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015 and 5.9 per cent more than the Rs 63.76 crore (31.6 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2016.

     

    The company’s Other sales and services cost declined 52.5 per cent to Rs 9.72 crore (4.7 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2016 as compared to the Rs 20.46 crore (9.9 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015 and was 15.6 per cent lower than the Rs 11.52 crore (5.7 per cent of TIO) in the previous quarter.

     

    OnMobile says that it has done a ‘Headcount optimization’ during the last financial year and quarter, which has resulted in a reduction of manpower cost. It says that its employee base at the end of Q2-2016 was 1,075. The company’s Employee Benefits Expense (EBE) in the current quarter declined 23.6 per cent to Rs 55.47 crore (26.8 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2016 as compared to the Rs 72.63 crore (35 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015 and was 3.9 per cent less than the Rs 57.70 crore (28.6 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2016.

    BENGALURU: Sun TV Network Limited (Sun TV) reported 11.6 per cent growth in standalone revenue (Total income from operations or TIO) in Q2-2016 (quarter ended 30 September, 2015, current quarter) at Rs 568.09 crore as compared to Rs 509.02 crore in Q2-2015, but 17.8 per cent less than the Rs 691.09 crore in Q2-2016.

     

    The company reported 41.4 per cent higher profit after tax (PAT) in the current quarter at Rs 213.38 crore (38.4 per cent margin) as compared to the Rs 154.47 crore (30.3 per cent margin) and10.7 per cent more than the Rs 197.28 crore (28.5 per cent margin) in Q1-2016.

    The company in its earnings release says that subscription revenues grew 10 per cent in the current quarter to Rs 197.42 crore as compared to the Rs 179.48 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter. Advertisement revenue in Q2-2016 increased 15.8 per cent to Rs301.37 crore as compared to Rs 260.26 crore in Q2-2016, but declined seven per cent from Rs 323.89 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    The board of directors of the company have decided not to declare any dividend for Q2-2016.

     

    Let’s look at the other numbers reported by Sun TV

     

    Sun TV’s total expenses (TE) in the current quarter at Rs 253.44 crore (44.6 per cent of TIO) was 15 per cent lower YoY than Rs 298.22 crore (58.6 per cent of TIO) and 38.5 per cent lower QoQ as compared to Rs 412.10 crore (59.6 per cent of TIO). The company’s TE in Q1 included IPL franchisee of Rs 85.05 crore (12.3 per cent of TIO), which is a non-recurring item during the other three quarters of the year.

     

    Sun TV’s ‘Other Expenditure’ (OE) is a major expense head that has declined QoQ by a huge margin. OE in Q2-2016 at Rs 31.31 crore (5.5 per cent of TIO) was 38.2 per cent more than the Rs 22.65 crore (4.4 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015 and almost a third of the Rs 91.65 crore (13.3 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2016.

     

    Sun TV’s Employee Benefit Expense (EBE) in Q2-2016 increased 13.5 per cent to Rs 56.92 crore (10 per cent of TIO) as compared to the Rs 50.13 crore (9.8 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015 and 4.4 per cent more than the Rs 54.51 crore (7.9 per cent of TIO) in the immediate trailing quarter.

    BENGALURU: This is the third consecutive quarter that direct to home (DTH) company Dish TV has reported growth across important financial and operational parameters including operating revenues (TIO), profit after tax (PAT) and subscription numbers.

     

    Last fiscal and quarter (year and quarter ended 31 March, 2015, Q4-2015), the Subhash Chandra led Essel Group’s DTH operator Dish TV Limited turned the corner with a consolidated profit after tax (PAT) of Rs 3.14 crore and Rs 34.94 crore (margin 4.8 per cent) respectively. The company followed this up with even better numbers in the previous quarter (Q1-2015). Dish TV was the first among listed DTH companies in the country in FY-2015 and Q4-2015 to report PAT as opposed to the operating profits reported by a segment of the other Goliaths for whom DTH services is just another small segment.

    (2) With effect from April 1, 2015, Dish TV says that it has started netting-off certain collection fees paid to its trade partners from its topline. This has resulted in the company’s topline getting shrunk by around four per cent, with a similar number being decreased from the middle line. The values for the prior comparative periods have also been recast to reflect the same.

    (3) Dish TV recently transferred its non-core business (including set-top boxes, dish antenna and related services) to its wholly owned subsidiary Dish Infra Services Private Limited (formerly known as Xingmedia Distribution Private Limited) on 1 April, 2015 on a going concern basis.

     

    For the current quarter ended 30 September, 2015 (Q2-2015), Dish TV has reported Operating revenue of Rs 752.42 crore, hence registering a 15.8 per cent YoY growth as compared to Q2-2015’s number of Rs 649.90 crore and a 2.1 per cent QoQ growth as compared to Rs 736.68 crore.

     

    The company reported PAT of Rs 86.96 crore (11.6 per cent margin) for the current quarter as compared to a loss of Rs 14.2 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter and a whopping 60.4 per cent growth in profit as compared to the Rs 54.21 crore (7.4 per cent margin) in the previous quarter.

     

    The company’s subscriber base in Q2-2016 increased by 3.38 lakh to touch 137 lakh as compared to the 133 lakh reported at the end of the previous quarter (Q1-2016).

     

    Dish TV reported a YoY growth in Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) to Rs  171 as compared to the Rs 166, but a QoQ decline from Rs 173 in the previous quarter.

     

    Dish TV chairman Subhash Chandra said, “Dish TV further reinforced its leadership position during the quarter. The company, while being at the forefront of the DTH industry in India, reached out to television viewers with innovative products that promise to enhance their television viewing experience. Dish TV’s improving financial strength coupled with its passion to be ahead of the curve, should be an advantage to further enhance its presence in the vast and still untapped analogue and free-to-air television markets in the country.”

     

    Let’s look at the other numbers reported by Dish TV

     

    Dish TV’s total expenditure in Q2-2016 at Rs 630.44 crore (83.8 per cent of TIO) declined 1.5 per cent as compared to the Rs 639.90 crore (98.5 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015 and declined 4.4 per cent as compared to the Rs 659.69 crore (89.5 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2016.

     

    A major expense head is content cost comprising programming, content and other costs. In Q2-2016 content cost at Rs 203.54 crore (27.1 per cent of TIO) was 17.1 per cent more than the Rs25.27 crore (29.7 per cent of TIO), but was 14.7 per cent lower than the Rs 212.01 crore (28.8 per cent of TIO) in the previous quarter.

     

    Employee Benefit Expense (EBE) in Q2-2016 at Rs 29.58 crore (3.9 per cent of TIO) increased 17.1 per cent as compared to the Rs 25.27 crore (3.9 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015, but declined 14.7 per cent as compared to the 34.67 crore (4.7 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2016.

     

    Dish TV’s selling and distribution expense in Q2-2016 declined 26.1 per cent to Rs 68.09 crore (nine per cent of TIO) as compared to the Rs 92.09 crore (14.2 per cent of TIO) in the corresponding year ago quarter, but was 2.6 per cent more than the Rs 66.34 crore (nine per cent of TIO) in the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    Dish TV managing director Jawahar Goel said, “Dish TV continued to actively contribute to the ‘Digital India’ movement by digitising analog TV homes in DAS phase 3 & 4 markets. A unique product mix and a strong brand recall enabled us to add a healthy 338 thousand net subscribers in a seasonally weak quarter. Our regional offering ‘Zing’ is now available across eight states and continues to be in high demand in its target markets.”

     

    Goel added, “Sticking to our guiding principle of growth with profitability, we enhanced operational efficiencies in the business and are pleased with an all-time high EBITDA margin of 33.9 per cent recorded during the quarter. We were positive at the net level as well and had a free cash flow of Rs. 84.9 crore. As we move ahead, we stay convinced about our pole position being related to our value for money offering and intend to constantly work on it for long term sustainable growth.”
