    Q2-2016: Zee Media EBIDTA up 9.7 percent

    BENGALURU:  Zee Media Corporation Limited (ZMCL), the erstwhile Zee News Limited reported a 3.1 percent deline in Total Income from Operations (TIO) to Rs 127.04 crore in the quarter ended September 30, 2015 (Q2-2016, current quarter) as compared to the Rs 131.12 crore in Q2-2015. TIO in the current quarter was 6.1 percent lower than the Rs 135.26 crore in Q1-2016.

    ZMCL’s EBIDTA however improved 9.7 percent to Rs 6.71 crore in the current quarter as compared to the Rs 6.12 crore in Q2-2015. ZMCL’s EBIDTA in the immediate trailing quarter was higher at Rs 14.76 crore.

     

    ZMCL’s existing television channels returned positive operating results (Positive EBIDTA) of Rs 17.43 crore crore in Q2-2016. Its TV Broadcasting EBIDTA was negatively impacted to the extent of Rs 7.26 crore by its new channels, and hence the TV Broadcast business returned a positive EBIDTA of Rs 10.17 crore.  Overall, ZMCL’s EBIDTA was further impacted by a negative EBIDTA of Rs 3.45 crore from its Print Business, hence the company reported the EBIDTA of Rs 6.71 crore mentioned above in Q2-2016.

     

    While the company’s Television Broadcast business revenue grew YoY grew 1.8 percent to Rs 100.30 crore in the current quarter as compared to Rs 98.56 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter, its Print business revenue declined 7.9 percent to Rs 30.02 crore as compared to Rs 32.59 crore. TV Broadcast business revenue in Q1-2016 was higher at Rs 108.64 crore, while Print business revenue was lower at Rs 28.04 crore.

     

    Advertisement and Subscription Revenues

     

    The company’s overall advertising and subscription revenues declined both YoY and QoQ in Q2-2016. ZMCL reported 2.6 percent lower advertising revenue of Rs 90.69 crore (71.4 percent of Total Revenue) in the current quarter as compared to 93.14 crore (71 percent of Total Revenue) in Q2-2015 and was 6.3 percent lower than the Rs 96.75 crore (71.5 percent of Total Revenue).

     

    TV Business advertisement revenue increased 2.1 percent to Rs 72.59 crore in Q2-2016 as compared to the Rs 71.1 crore in Q2-2015, but declined 8.9 percent as compared to the Rs 79.72 crore in the immediate trailing quarter. TV Business Advertisement revenue from existing channels declined 3.9 percent in the current quarter to Rs 65.93 crore as compared to the Rs 68.58 crore in Q2-2015 and declined 11 percent as compared to the Rs 74.05 crore in Q1-2016. Advertisement revenue from new channels more than doubled (went up 2.7 times) to Rs 6.66 crore as compared to the Rs 2.52 crore in Q2-2015 and increased 17.3 percent as compared to the Rs 5.68 crore in Q1-2016.

     

    Overall subscription revenue in the current quarter declined 3 percent to Rs 27.24 crore (21.4 percent of Total Revenue) in Q2-2016 as compared to the Rs 28.07 crore (21.4 percent of Total Revenue) in the corresponding year ago quarter and was 5 percent lower than the Rs 28.67 crore (21.2 percent of Total Revenue) in the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    TV Business YoY subscription revenue declined 0.2 percent in the current quarter to Rs 24.44 crore as compared to the Rs 24.62crore in Q2-2015, and declined 5.4 percent as compared to the Rs 25.84 crore in Q1-2016.

     

    Let us look at the other numbers reported by ZMCL

     

    ZMCL’s Total Expenditure in the current quarter declined 3.4 percent to Rs 133.35 crore as compared to the Rs 138.01 crore in Q2-2015, but increased 0.3 percent as compared to the Rs 133.01 crore in Q1-2016.

     

    Employee Benefits Expense in Q2-2016 declined 7.2 percent to Rs 38.60 crore in Q2-2016 as compared to the Rs 41.60 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter and was 8.3 percent lower than the Rs 42.11 crore in Q1-2016.

     

    Operational Cost in Q2-2016 declined 17.5 percent to Rs 21.14 crore as compared to the Rs 25.62 crore in Q2-2015 but was 1.7 percent higher than the Rs 20.79 crore in Q1-2016.

     

    Marketing, Distribution and Business Promotion Expenses in Q2-2016 increased 66 percent to Rs 24.97 crore as compared to the Rs 15.04 crore in Q2-2015 and was 15.3 percent more than the Rs 21.65 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    ZMCL’s loss in Q2-2016 increased to Rs 16.98 crore as compared to the loss of Rs 11.53 crore in Q2-2015 and the loss of Rs 7.1 crore in Q1-2016.

    Jain Studios reports flat q-o-q PAT for Q2-2015

    BENGALURU: Jain Studios Limited (JSL) reported 6 per cent growth in q-o-q Total Operating Revenue (TOI) in Q2-2015 at Rs 880.07 lakh from Rs 830.24 lakh and a 52.5 y-o-y growth from Rs 577.1 lakh. Y-t-d the company’s TIO increased 52.6 per cent to Rs 1710.31 lakh from Rs 1120.84 lakh in the corresponding six months of last year (HY-2014).

    The company’s profit after tax (PAT) in Q2-2015 at Rs 20.78 lakh (2.4 per cent of TIO) was almost flat (2.6 per cent higher) than the Rs 20.26 lakh (2.4 per cent of TIO), but was 33.9 per cent lower than the Rs 31.43 lakh in Q2-2014. PAT for HY-2015 at Rs 41.04 lakh (2.4 per cent of TIO) was 20.3 per cent lower than the Rs 51.51 lakh (4.6 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    JSL total expenditure (TE) in Q2-2015 at Rs 845.05 lakh (96 per cent of TIO) was 4.1 per cent more than the Rs 811.94 lakh in Q1-2015 (97.8 per cent of TIO) and 50.1 per cent more than the Rs 562.87 lakh (97.5 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. HY-2015 TE at Rs 1657 lakh (96.9 per cent of TIO) was 52.1 per cent more than the Rs 1089.44 lakh (97.2 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    Production cost is a major expense head for the company. The company’s production cost in Q2-2015 at Rs 625.52 lakh (71.1 per cent of TIO) was 4 per cent more than the Rs 601.2 lakh (72.4 per cent of TIO) in the previous quarter and 271.9 per cent more than the Rs 168.19 lakh (29.1 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. For HY-2015, production cost at Rs 1226.73 lakh (71.7 per cent of TIO) was 279.6 per cent more than the Rs 323.18 lakh (28.8 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    JSL chairman J K Jain stated, “There is a growth of 52.50 per cent in the operating revenues during the current quarter as compared to quarter in the previous year due to significant wins in Mobile Healthcare business.

     

    “The growth in revenue is in line with our expectation and is a reflection of our investments in new business ventures to accelerate the company’s growth. We have utilised internal funds for these ventures and are sure that the company will be able to mobilise funds to support the growth in future,” he added.

    BENGALURU: Mukta Arts Limited (MAL) reported lower Total Income from Operations (TIO) of Rs 23.95 crore in Q2-2015 versus the Rs 24.99 crore in the immediate trailing quarter and almost a fourth of the Rs 85.16 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter.

     

    The company also reported lower loss in Q2-2015 at Rs 0.03 crore versus a loss of Rs 24.62 crore in Q1-2015 and a nominal PAT of Rs 0.16 crore in Q2-2014. TIO in HY-2015 was Rs 48.93 crore, less than a third of the Rs 156.60 crore in HY-2014. The company has reported y-t-d a loss of Rs 24.65 crore versus PAT of Rs 0.91 crore in HY-2014.

     

    The company’s financial statements indicate that its income from operations include Rs 3.5 crore relating to certain rights in Q2-2015. MAL’s other income includes Rs 1.19 crore, the proceeds of a keyman insurance policy.

    Let us look at the other figures reported by the company

     

    MAL total expenditure (TE) in Q2-2015 at Rs 23.74 crore was 52.3 per cent lower (less than half) the Rs 49.74 crore in Q1-2015 and 71.9 percent lower (less than a third) of the Rs 84.61 crore in Q2-2014. HY-2015 TE at Rs 73.48 crore was 52.6 per cent less than the Rs 154.95 crore in HY-2014.

     

    Distributors/producers share in Q2-2015 was less than a fourth at Rs 5.74 crore of the Rs 23.04 crore in Q1-2015 and 1/13.6 times the Rs 78.21 crore in Q2-2014. Distributors/producers share in HY-2015 was Rs 28.78 crore, for HY-2014, it was Rs 143.15 crore.

     

    Amortisation of tangible assets including film rights (amortisation expense) in Q2-2015 was Rs 9.26 crore versus the Rs 19.5 crore in Q1-2015 and the Rs 0.37 crore in Q2-2014. HY-2015 amortisation was Rs 28.76 crore, in HY-2014 it was Rs 0.42 crore.

     

    During the current quarter, the company commenced its cinemas at Sangli and Hyderabad. Its Theatrical Exhibition segment’s revenue in Q2-2015 was Rs 8.11 crore as compared to the Rs 6.32 crore in Q1-2015 and the Rs 3.52 crore in Q2-2014. For HY-2015, revenue from Theatrical Exhibition segment revenue rose to Rs 14.43 crore from Rs 7.2 crore in HY-2014. The segment reported operating profit of Rs 0.07 crore versus an operating a loss of Rs 0.14 crore in Q1-2015 and an operating loss of Rs 0.24 crore in Q2-2014. Operating loss for HY-2015 at Rs 0.7 crore was lower than the Rs 0.16 crore in HY-2014.

    The company has reported a 31.7 per cent increase in Total Income from Operations (TIO) at Rs 84.96 crore in Q2-2015 from Rs 64.49 crore in Q1-2015 and 21.4 per cent increase from the Rs 69.96 crore in the corresponding quarter of last year. The company’s net consolidated profit after tax has reduced 10.4 per cent quarter on quarter to Rs 8.57 crore (10.1 per cent of TIO) from Rs 9.56 crore (14.8 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2015, but jumped 37.1 per cent from Rs 6.25 crore (8.9 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014.
     
    For HY-2015, PAT at Rs 18.14 crore (12.1 per cent of TIO) was 73.3 per cent more than the Rs 10.47 crore (8.3 per cent of TIO) for HY-2014. For FY-2014, PAT at Rs 27.95 crore was 10.6 per cent of TIO and PAT for FY-2013 at Rs 24.58 crore was 11.4 per cent of TIO.
     
    Diluted EPS (not annualised) is lower in Q2-2015 at Rs 4.30 versus the Rs 4.82 in Q1-2015, but higher than the Rs 3.15 in Q2-2014.  For HY-2015, diluted (not annualised) EPS was Rs 9.10 and for HY-2014, it was Rs 5.25. An EPS of Rs 14.08 for FY-2014 and Rs 12.38 for FY-2013 was reported for the company during its IPO.
     
    The company’s Total Expenditure (TE) in Q2-2015 has gone up 41.4 per cent to Rs 64.91 crore (76.4 per cent of TIO) from Rs 45.89 crore (71.2 per cent of TIO) in the immediate trailing quarter and was 21.4 per cent more than the Rs 54.85 crore (78.4 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. For HY-2015, TE at Rs 110.8 crore (74.1 per cent of TIO) was 14.5 per cent more than the Rs 96.76 crore in HY-2014.

    Zee Learn reports lowered results for Q2-2015

    BENGALURU: The Essel group’s education company Zee Learn Limited (Zee Learn) reported lowered results for Q2-2015. Total Income from operations (TIO) for Q2-2015 at Rs 22.76 crore was 39 per cent less than the Rs 37.30 crore in the immediate trailing quarter and 4.8 per cent lower than the Rs 23.91 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter. For HY-2015, Zee Learn’s TIO at Rs 60.06 crore was 4.6 per cent higher than the Rs 57.43 crore in HY-2014.

    PAT for Q2-2015 at Rs 1.14 crore (5 per cent of TIO) was 68 per cent lower than the Rs 3.56 crore (9.6 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2015 and 2.13 times the Rs 0.54 crore (2.2 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. For HY-2015 PAT at Rs 4.7 crore (7.8 per cent of TIO) was 24.4 per cent higher than the Rs 3.78 crore (6.6 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    Zee Learn’s Total expenditure (TE) in Q2-2015 at Rs 19.18 crore (84.3 per cent of TIO) was 38.5 per cent lower than the Rs 31.17 crore (83.6 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2015 and 14 per cent lower than the Rs 22.31 crore (93.3 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. HY-2015 TE at Rs 50.35 crore (83.8 per cent of TIO) was 3.8 per cent lower than the Rs 52.36 crore (91.2 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    The company’s marketing, advertisement and publicity expense (marketing expense) in Q2-2015 at Rs 1.58 crore (6.9 per cent of TIO) was 36.3 per cent less than the Rs 2.47 crore (6.6 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2015 and 16.7 per cent lower than the Rs 1.89 crore (7.9 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. Marketing expense in HY-2015 at Rs 4.05 crore (6.7 per cent of TIO) was 26.3 per cent lower than the Rs 5.49 crore (9.6 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    Employee Benefit Expense (EBE) for Q2-2015 at Rs 5.84 crore (25.7 per cent of TIO) was 13.2 per cent lower than the Rs 6.73 crore (18 per cent of TIO) and 22.2 per cent lower than the Rs 7.51 crore in Q2-2014. EBE for HY-2015 at Rs 12.57 crore (20.9 per cent of TIO) was 20.6 per cent lower than the Rs 15.82 crore (27.5 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    Operating cost in Q2-2015 at Rs 0.51 crore (2.2 per cent of TIO) was 24.5 per cent lower than the Rs 0.68 crore (1.8 per cent of TIO) and 37.3 per cent lower than the Rs 0.82 crore (3.4 per cent of TIO) In HY-2015, operating cost at Rs 1.19 crore (2 per cent of TIO) was 25.7 per cent lower than the Rs 1.60 crore (2.8 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    Depreciation and amortisation expense (depreciation) in Q2-2015 at Rs 1.67 crore (7.4 per cent of TIO) was 15 per cent lower than the Rs 1.97 crore (5.3 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2015 and 4.6 per cent lower than the Rs 1.75 crore (7.3 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. HY-2015 depreciation at Rs 3.62 crore (6 per cent of TIO) was 10.2 per cent more than the Rs 3.29 crore (5.7 percent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    Other expense in Q2-2015 at Rs 5.49 crore (24.1 per cent of TIO) was 8.2 per cent lower than the Rs 5.98 crore (16 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2015 and 0.8 per cent more than the Rs 5.45 crore (22.8 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. Operating cost in HY-2015 at Rs 11.35 crore (18.9 per cent of TIO) was 1 per cent lower than the Rs 11.47 crore (20 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.
