  • Rajasthan Royals ties up with Fire in Babylon

    MUMBAI: IPL team Rajasthan Royals has tied up with documentary movie ‘Fire in Babylon‘, for its theatrical release in India. Fire in Babylon will release across key metros on 21 September in all PVR cinemas.

    The Rajasthan Royals saw an instant fit with the theme of the story and have engaged with Fire in Babylon to be a part of the release promotions of the movie.

    Fire in Babylon is a documentary directed and written by Stevan Riley about the great West Indies cricket team of the 1970‘s and 1980‘s. It highlights the struggles the West Indies faced as a country and how cricket acted as a unification factor in bringing the many islands, which were recently independent from the British colonial rule, together under the banner of a world class cricketing unit.

    Shot in a documentary style, it features the stories of Viv Richards, Malcom Marshal, Michael Holding and Andy Roberts.

    Speaking on the association, Rajasthan Royals CEO Raghu Iyer said, “We found an immediate connect with the amazing story of the legendary West Indies cricket team, and that of the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. We are very happy to be associated with the movie and encourage our fans to step out and enjoy this beautiful and well told story.”

    Speaking on behalf of the Fire in Babylon team Sunaman Sood said, “We feel extremely privileged that the Rajasthan Royals have partnered us to promote the film. Having large fan base of cricket aficionados with a keen cricketing sense, The Royals form an ideal fit for us to showcase and build awareness for the film.”

    For a first PVR to release documentaries under Director’s Rare banner

    MUMBAI: PVR cinemas is slated to release three documentaries under the banner of Director‘s Rare. The documentaries are – Fire In Babylon on 21 September, Bom / One Day Ahead Of Democracy to on 9 November and Celluloid Man sometime in December.

    All along PVR Cinemas has been releasing independent feature films under Director‘s Rare brand but this is the first time that documentary features are being released under the banner.

    Observes, Head of PVR Director‘s Rare Shiladitya Bora, “We at PVR Cinemas believe that there is a space for all kinds of cinema. We have already pushed the envelope by giving mainstream exhibition to indie content. Now we want to take a step forward and treat our audiences with some exceptional documentaries which deserve to be seen.

    In the coming weeks we will be releasing some award winning Indian as well as international documentaries under PVR Director‘s Rare banner,” he adds.

    Fire In Babylon, by Steven Riley charts the ascendancy of the West Indies cricket team throughout the late ‘70s and ‘80s. The film strikes a defiant blow at the forces of the apartheid world, through a game previously reserved for the privileged elite. The film was nominated for a British Independent Film Award for Best Documentary and was a joint-winner of the UNESCO Award at the Jamaica Reggae Film Festival 2011.

    Set in a remote village of Malana in the Himalayas Bom / One Day Ahead Of Democracy by Amlan Datta depicts the invasion of modern democracy in this land of harmony, peace and unity, resulting in the destruction of the latter.

    Celluloid Man: A Film On P.K. Nair by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur honours the contribution of P K Nair to disseminate film culture in India. Nair was the founder-director of the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), Pune. His efforts have resulted in a coveted collection of 12,000 films at the NFAI from the start up of 124 films.

    PVR launches nine-screen multiplex in Pune

    MUMBAI: PVR Ltd has launched a nine screen multiplex at Viman Nagar, near Baker Company, Pune.

    The multiplex, spread across an area of 79,345 sq. ft. has a capacity of 2081 seats, promises to provide an exceptional digital movie experience to cinegoers of the city at a pricing ranging from Rs 70 to Rs 300.

    With the launch of the multiplex in Pune, PVR today stands at 197 screens in 44 cinemas in 13 states and 27 cities across India.

    The multiplex chain now has 48 screens and nine multiplexes in six key cities of Maharashtra including four in Mumbai, one in Latur, one in Aurangabad, one in Nagpur and Nanded respectively.

    PVR Director’s Rare to re-release Jaane Bhi Do Yaaroon on 26 October

    MUMBAI: PVR Director‘s Rare, in association with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), will be releasing the digitally restored version of Kundan Shah‘s cult classic Jaane Bhi Do Yaaroon on 26 October.

    Said PVR Director‘s Rare head Shiladitya Bora, “The film will be re-released pan-India exclusively at PVR Cinemas only.”

    Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro narrated a tale of two simple and honest photographers, essayed by Naseeruddin Shah and Ravi Vaswani. They witness a murder and get dragged into the corrupt real estate circle where politicians and bureaucrats are involved.

    The film, which also featured actors like Pankaj Kapur, Om Puri, Satish Shah, Neena Gupta and Satish Kaushik, is noted for its slapstick humour.

    PVR launches first multiplex in Bilaspur

    MUMBAI: PVR Ltd has announced the opening of the first multiplex at Rama Magneto the Mall in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh.

    With this launch in Bilaspur, PVR now has eight screens and two multiplexes in two key cities of Chhattisgarh including four screens and 1212 seats in Raipur.

    The 27,821 sq ft multiples will have a capacity of 792 seats and will provide an digital movie experience to the cine goers of the city at ticket prices ranging from Rs 70 to Rs 160.

    PVR Pictures to release romcom To Rome With Love on 7 September

    MUMBAI: PVR Pictures is all set to release its latest offering To Rome with Love in theatres on 7h September.

    The film is a kaleidoscopic romantic comedy set in one of the world‘s most enchanting cities. The film brings us into contact with a well-known American architect (Alec Baldwin) reliving his youth; an average middle-class Roman (Roberto Benigni) who suddenly finds himself as Rome‘s biggest celebrity; a young provincial couple drawn into separate romantic encounters and an American opera director (Woody Allen) wanting to put a singing mortician on stage. 

    The film has Academy Award winning filmmaker Woody Allen offering a triple treat of writing, directing and acting in this film. Known for his funny wordplay and incisive characterizations, Allen makes many short lists of the most important comedy directors of all time. To Rome with Love is inspired profoundly by Italian filmmakers who he finds both innovative and brilliant.

    While Rome is a city abundant with romance and comedy, Woody Allen‘s To Rome with Love is about people having adventures that will change their lives forever.

    The film also stars Penelope Cruz, Roberto Benigni, Alec Baldwin, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page in the lead along with Woody Allen himself.

    PVR launches 5-screen multiplex in Nagpur

    MUMBAI: PVR has launched its five-screen multiplex at the Empress Mall, near Gandhi Lake, Nagpur.

    With this launch in Nagpur, PVR now has 39 screens and eight multiplexes in five key cities of Maharashtra including four in Mumbai, one in Latur, one in Aurangabad and one in Nanded.

    The multiplex is spread across an area of 50,000 sq. ft. with a capacity of 1234 seats and will provide a digital movie experience to the cinegoers of the city at a pricing ranging from Rs 70–Rs 180.

    With the launch in Nagpur, PVR today stands at 184 screens in 42 cinemas in 13 states & 25 cities across India.

    PVR Ltd. Group President Pramod Arora said, “Over the years, we have understood the demand in smaller towns and hence we have grown steadily by expanding our presence in tier II and III cities across India.     PVR in an agreement with IMAX

    MUMBAI: PVR Ltd. (PVR Cinemas), India‘s leading cinema brand and operator of the country‘s top-performing multiplexes, has entered into an agreement to install an IMAX theatre system in Bangalore that is scheduled to open by March next year.

    The deal follows an earlier agreement with PVR Cinemas announced in March last year for four IMAX theatres, bringing the exhibitor‘s total IMAX commitment to five. The deal also brings to 14 the total number of IMAX theatres open or contracted to open in India.

    “Audiences across India are passionate about cinema and with IMAX‘s worldwide brand, more and more patrons want to experience films in the premium immersive format only IMAX can deliver,” said PVR Chairman Ajay Bijli. “We view IMAX as a competitive advantage for our business and we are delighted to bring more audiences in Bangalore The IMAX Experience,” he added.

    Going by the terms of today‘s agreement, PVR Cinemas will install an IMAX theatre in a multiplex in Bangalore‘s Vega Mall – a new construction project that is slated to open by March 2013. The exhibitor also plans to open two of its previously contracted IMAX theatres in existing complexes in Bangalore and Mumbai this year, with the other two IMAX theatres set to go into new construction projects in the cities of Delhi and Noida that are slated to open in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

    IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond said, “We‘re excited to expand our partnership with PVR – now our second largest exhibitor in India. With a population of 1.2 billion, a growing middle-class and strong movie-going culture, India is a market poised for tremendous growth. We also believe that by the end of 2013, we will be in a position to begin offering IMAX versions of Bollywood titles, which account for 90 per cent of India‘s internal annual box-office receipts.”

    MUMBAI: Known to be releasing good films, PVR Director‘s Rare is set to release Indie-film Shuttlecock Boys on 3 August.

    Shuttlecock Boys, made under the banner of Pennywise Films, will not only take the audience through a journey of life, but also reach out to everyone wanting to chase their dream as well. It‘s a story that revolves around the lives, successes and failures of four friends who hail from lower-middle class backgrounds living in Delhi with a question trickling down their minds.

    Should we accept what life offers to us on a platter or should we try to chase our dreams, taking the path less taken? That‘s the question protagonists Gaurav (Vijay Prateek), Manav (Aakar Kaushi), Pankaj (Alok Kumar) and Loveleen (Manish Nanwani) seek answer to as they decide to embark upon an eventful journey that will change the course of their lives and careers forever.

    Shuttlecock Boys is 76 minutes in length, made on a shoestring budget of Rs 3.5 million (personal savings and loan from friends & family), took almost 4 years to be finished and has four non-actors as protagonists.
