  • Doordarshan modifies Arunprabha packaging tenders date, episodic price up to Rs 1 m

NEW DELHI: Pubcaster Doordarshan has modified the 21 June date for uploading the modified request for proposal for selection of agency for channel packaging work for its DD Arunprabha channel being launched for the north-eastern Indian states.

Technical bids will be opened the next day, but no date has been announced for opening of financial bids.

It said that submission and opening of bids will be through e-tendering and the technical and financial bids have to be submitted online and the document can be downloaded from the web sites.

Earlier in mid-January, it had extended to the end of that month the final date for receiving proposals for commissioned programmes in seven different categories for the new channel. DD had said that preference will be given to Programmes based on themes and subjects relevant to NER.

The proposals from reputed producers/production houses are under Fixed Budget Mode of Commissioned Programmes Category and the episodic price ranges between Rs 800,000 to Rs One Million.

DD Arunprabha will be a 24×7 satellite channel originating from DDK, Itanagar. Programmes on DD Arunprabha would show richness, variety and diversity of local culture. The channel would seamlessly integrate NER with the entire country. The channel’s USP will be to attract young people of NER with contemporary entertainment shows embedded with informative content.

The invitation is part of efforts of Prasar Bharati’s special efforts in North East Region (NER) to promote and nurture talent, provide a platform to deserving producers/artistes from NER as well as from outside to encourage production of better programmes for DD viewers.

Programme proposals for DD Arunprabha are Daily Soap/Serials; Thrillers, Mythological serials, telefilms, quiz shows/magazine formats with celebrity anchorperson, travelogue in documentary format or with celebrity, and reality shows.

In another modification, DD said: “The show reel of a programme should depict/showcase the work already done by the producer/production house. It should also depict the credentials of the producer/production house.”

All other terms and conditions of the RFP including details of payment remain unchanged and in full force and effect.

Prasar Bharati’s Sircar says no new NE channel planned

MUMBAI: It was on 12 November that the media was abuzz with the news that Indian terrestrial pubcaster Doordarshan (DD) is all set to give birth to another baby to add to its 21 channel brood. Reports stated that the channel called Prabha would target the North Eastern states of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh to show showcase their art and culture. It seemed as though it was a done thing.

However, when indiantelevision.com contacted Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar, he highlighted that currently there was only a conversation going on whether such a step should be taken; nothing had really fructified.

“This idea was discussed in Arunachal Pradesh during my recent visits but it is for the government – not Prasar Bharati – to decide whether to go ahead with it or not,” says Sircar.

As of now, the government owned network has two all India channels (DD National and DD News), 11 regional language satellite channels, four state networks, one international channel, DD Sports as well as DD Rajya Sabha and DD Lok Sabha. One of these is a satellite TV channel for North East called DD North East that telecasts programmes in Assamese, English and other regional dialects with a programming mix of serials, informative and social shows, infotainment, news, current affairs, art and culture.

With a channel already addressing the needs of TV viewers in this region, does creating a second one make sense? “If additional funds are available from the government then maybe Prasar Bharati could take a shot,” quips Sircar. He was recently on a tour to Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Nagaland to understand the issues facing DD in the region and to increase its reach. It was during this tour that some discussions and proposals were made, which were then reported by a wire service.

  • Zee News goes interactive on Dish TV, sports to follow

Zee News goes interactive on Dish TV, sports to follow

NEW DELHI: Dish TV, India’s first DTH platform, announced that Zee News channel has gone interactive and Zee Sports is to follow suit from mid-September.

Talking to indiantelevision.com on the issue, Dish TV business head Jawahar Goel added that apart from interactivity, Dish TV subscribers can also enjoy all Star channels at no extra cost till 30 September.

“Interactivity is something that we had promised our subscribers as part of value-added services and over a period of time we have readied ourselves with the right technology,” Goel said.
Dish TV interactive services also consists of a gaming channel and electronic programming guide.

An interactive Zee News will enable a viewer to watch a live programming, while simultaneously giving him or her option to access information on a variety of other topics via eight windows.

Information can be had in the areas of business, entertainment, crime, sports, top 10 news stories and weather report of 100 Indian cities, apart from the live news bulletin or programme being aired at the moment.

How does this work? A subscriber of Dish TV wants to see whether Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza has won her latest match in the on going US Opens or not and cannot wait for the sports segments to come in the news bulletin.

So, while a news bulletin is on on Zee News, a few presses of the buttons can take the viewer straight to the sports section for the Sania news story even as the main news bulletin continues.

To facilitate interactivity on the Dish TV platform, the company has tied up with the US-based Open TV, a company specializing in such activities and features.

Apart from news, Dish TV is also planning to go interactive with sports, starting with Zee Sports. Sports interactivity will involve freezing of shots from a particular angle, getting player details immediately without having to wait for the sports channel providing it and statistics about the game in progress and sports in general.

The interactive Zee Sports will start on Dish TV with the tri-nation cricket series involving India, Australia and another country at a neutral ground from mid-September for which Zee has the telecast rights.

India began commercial DTH operations in October 2003 and by December 2004 reported over three million subscribers.

Hong Kong-based market research firm Media Partners Asia (MPA) has said India is poised to become Asia’s leading cable market by 2010, the largest satellite market by 2008 and the most lucrative pay TV market by 2015.

Presently, apart from Dish TV (over 1.25 million subscribers), other DTH players active in India are Tata Sky and pubcaster Doordarshan, which provides a subscription-free service of free to air channels through DD Direct+ that has over 1.1 million subscribers.
