Priyanka Chopra stresses importance of persistence to succeed at SAMMA

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra enthralled American audiences as she related the story of her rise in Bollywood and the importance of hard work and persistence which always brought positive results.

Chopra was one of the keynote speakers at the 4th annual conference South Asians in Media, Marketing and Entertainment (SAMMA) held recently at the Time Warner building in New York.

Chopra also talked about her transition into singing. She shared her mantra of never giving up. Chopra was recently signed by Interscope and DesiHits! and is now the opening musical act for the NFL Network Thursday night football.

The event brought together top South Asian leaders and innovators in digital media, television and film, marketing and advertising and music and entertainment for two days of insights, ideation and industry building, a press release issued by SAMMA said. Other keynote speakers included Dr. Mehmood Khan, EVP and Chief Innovations and Science Officer at PepsiCo, and Keli Lee, EVP and Head of Casting at ABC.

The SAMMA Summit, co-presented by Time Warner, was followed by an evening gala where the organisation presented its 2013 SAMMA Trailblazer Awards to four individuals for significant contributions to their industry and helping pave the way for south Asians in their respective fields. The awards went to comedian Russell Peters, actress Mindy Kaling, jazz pianist and composer Vijay Iyer and Anjula Acharia Bath, CEO and founder of DesiHits.

“It is strange to be called a trailblazer because I’ve never really considered myself one,” said Kaling, lead actor, producer and writer of The Mindy Project on Fox. “In general, I try to tell stories that are relatable to everyone. I’ve always aspired to be the funniest person out there, not just the funniest south Asian,” she said in a video acceptance from the set of her show. “I am privileged to have had these opportunities in show business,” she said.

While accepting his award, Peter who celebrated his 43rd birthday at the gala, said “I’ve never been called a trailblazer.” Entertaining the audience with his one-liners and tongue-in-cheek remarks, Peter said, “When I was younger, I always wanted a Chevy Trailblazer, but this trailblazer I never imagined. I am honoured and proud especially to be recognised by my own community.  The more doors we can open for each other the better for everyone.  I see more of us in the industry every day, and I want to continue seeing more of us.”

Peters was presented his award by actor, fellow comedian and previous Trailblazer recipient Aasif Mandvi of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Before presenting the award, Ansari roasted and toasted Peters saying, “Let me introduce someone who is like worth 60 billion dollars,” playing off of Peters being the first south Asian to have been ranked as one of the highest paid comedians in the US, after working in the industry for more than 20 years.

Trailblazer recipient Iyer, one of the most awarded jazz artists in the world and winner of the prestigious 2013 MacArthur Genius Award said he was proud to receive the award. Calling music a universal language, he said he hoped that in some way he has helped push the dialogue forward and has inspired others through the beauty of music and jazz, both south Asians and people at-large.

Presented the award by David Taghioff and business colleague at CAA, Acharia Bath shared: “We have so much to learn from one another. I encourage everyone to live their dreams.  Bringing different cultures and viewpoints together in the arts and industry, whether in music or any field, takes passion and perseverance.” Bath, named Billboard’s top 40 women in music for her work in blending Indian talent with mainstream music in the US, continued,  “Helping one another, we can achieve anything.”

Priyanka Chopra named India’s most dangerous celebrity online

Actress Priyanka Chopra has topped the list of the most dangerous celebrities in the Indian cyberspace this year followed by Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, according to a study.

Priyanka took the mantle from Sunny Leone, who topped the list last year but dropped to the ninth position this time, in the study by security software maker McAfee.

Kareena Kapoor and Akshay Kumar were in the top five in the study which highlights how cybercriminals use celebrities to take advantage of fans seeking more information about their idols.

“In India where celebrities enjoy demigod status, cybercriminals often use their names to lure people to sites which host malicious software designed to compromise personal details and disrupt devices,” McAfee India Centre VP Engineering (Consumer and Mobile Business Group) Venkatasubrahmanyam Krishnapur said.

This year, searching for a celebrity’s name, with search terms like wall paper, videos and nude pictures resulted in the highest instances of malware-laden sites. Chopra, showed 79 infected search results, while Shah Rukh was at the second spot with 75 malicious sites, Salman ranked third, with 68 infected sites.

The top-10 list was rounded off by Saif Ali Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Farhan Akhtar, Leone and Hrithik Roshan.

  • Shaadi Ke Side Effects to release on Valentine’s day

Shaadi Ke Side Effects to release on Valentine’s day

It seems Shaadi Ke Side Effects starring Vidya Balan and Farhan Akhtar is facing a tough time with no free slots available for the film’s release. Initially, the romantic movie was slated to release on 6 December, but now it has been postponed to 14 February. The duo is sharing the screen space for the first time.

It is said that the producers of the movie are playing safe, taking into consideration that the much hyped Dhoom 3 has occupied the slot for December release.

However, yet again, the February release is not a clean release for SKSE considering the fact Yash Raj’s Gunday starring Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor too comes out on Valentine’s day.

Shaadi Ke Side Effects is produced by Balaji Motion Pictures along with Pritish Nandy Communications and is directed by Saket Chowdhary.

Chowdhary ventured into direction with his directorial debut Pyaar Ke Side Effects which became a surprise success in the multiplexes.

Shraddha Kapoor replaces Priyanka Chopra in Milan Talkies

Aashiqui 2 star Shraddha Kapoor is on cloud nine these days. Now in a position to pick and choose, Shraddha has just given the nod to Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Milan Talkies, thereby replacing Priyanka Chopra who was until recently, very excited about working with Tigmanshu.

A source close to the project revealed, “After Bullett Raja where he has cast Saif and Sonakshi together for the first time, Tigmanshu and his producer Ekta Kapoor were keen to cast another untried pair in Milan Talkies. Imran and Priyanka made a lot of box-office sense together. But when Imran opted out and was replaced by Shahid Kapoor, Tigmanshu had no choice but to replace Priyanka since Shahid and Priyanka together after Teri Meri Kahaani spelt doom.”

Shraddha, on the other hand, is felt to be the new rising female actor after Aashiqui 2. Both the male and female protagonist in Milan Talkies has equally powerful parts.

A closed source says that after Aashiqui 2, Tigmanshu feels Shraddha can carry off the complex dramatic moments as well as the light-hearted interludes in Milan Talkies.

As for Priyanka she seems to be gravitating towards the lighter fun parts after a series of heavyweight dramatic roles. A source close to Priyanka reveals that at present, Mary Kom is her only emotionally challenging role. Apart from that, Priyanka is looking for a change of mood after 7 Khoon Maaf, Barfi and Teri Meri Kahaani.

Actor Sanjay Dutt, who had acted as member of a qawali party forty-one years earlier in his father Sunil Dutt’s Reshma aur Shera as a child artiste, will be rendering a qawali once again as the iconic Sher Khan in the forthcoming re-imagined version of Zanjeer.

While the new version being released on 7 September stars Ramsharan and Priyanka Chopra with Sanjay Dutt, the original starred megastar Amitabh Bachchan – who was also an artiste in Reshma aur Shera – with Jaya Bachchan.

Dutt has donned a never-seen-before look. His look as Sher Khan which was revealed some time back in the trailer has already been admired by audiences.

The actor himself was extremely psyched about doing the qawali sequence in the song Khochey Pathan Ki Zubaan and director Apoorva Lakhia is confident that this will be one of Sanjay Dutt’s most memorable performances on the big screen.
