Airtel releases a report on the mobile attitude of people in 2013

MUMBAI: Mobile phones have certainly made our lives very easy. From surfing the details of the favourite celebrities and looking for the chartbusters to downloading wallpapers and popular songs, mobile users are doing everything over the phone.

And keeping this in mind one of the leading telecommunications company, Bharti Airtel, which has operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, released Airtel Mobitude2013 – the 5th edition of the Indian annual survey that captures the mobile attitude of customers highlighting their preferences.

The report reveals that mobile TV, Bollywood, Hello Tunes, Re 1 entertainment store and gaming ruled customer preferences. Mobile TV witnessed the highest traction this year with a whopping 400 per cent plus jump in viewership over last year. Viewers were glued to entertainment channels most to catch up on all their favorite TV shows and this witnessed an unbeatable traction of over 800 per cent over sports and about 200 per cent over news.

Bharti Airtel (India) chief marketing officer consumer business, Govind Rajan said in a release: “Today, while the mobile phone is an indispensible 24X7 companion for customers across age groups and geographies, each individual’s preferences and usage requirements differ. Mobitude captures these trends to bring out the true reflection of the customer’s likings and usage habits. The verdict this year has interesting findings of the preferences of more than 194 million customers across the country!”

Interestingly, the preference of viewers shifted in terms of Bollywood content. In the imagery downloads category, heartthrob Sunny Leone won hearts to top the charts beating Bollywood divas including Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. Breaking the records of the past five years, the young newbies in the industry dethroned the most popular ‘Khans’. Bold spirited actors – Sunny Leone, Sherlyn Chopra and Poonam Pandey emerged as the most downloaded, surpassing the total downloads of their male counterparts. While Ranbir Kapoor tops charts in the male category in the imagery download, Bollywood’s hottest celebrity Katrina Kaif who topped charts for four consecutive years is out of the top five league. On the other hand, Aamir Khan continued to be out of top 5 for the fourth consecutive year.

In Hollywood, the beautiful preggies Megan Fox and Drew Barrymore made it to the top downloaded in the female category and unlike their Bollywood counterparts, Hollywood hunks Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise are defying age to top the download charts.

In terms of songs, Indians preferred romantic songs over the filmy item numbers. Customers are now humming the romantic number Tum Hi Ho of the movie Aashiqui2 making it the most popular download in the Bollywood Hello Tune category. Other songs like Jeene Laga Hoon from Ramaiya Vastavaiya with newbies in lead roles trend more over songs with popular celebrities. Even Priyanka Chopra’s hit international track Exotic was among the most downloaded English songs.

In the sports category, Sachin Tendulkar ruled charts with a whopping 124 per cent jump in download compared to last year followed by Roger Federer. Our other men in blue – Dhoni and Yuvraj however were bowled out from the Top five league to give way for women power with Serena Williams, Sania Mirza and Saina Nehwal who joined the wagon this year.

Driven by the popularity of the Airtel Re 1 entertainments store, data usage continues to grow at a fast pace. The number of data users jump 124 per cent from last year and data consumption jumped 220 per cent.

  • Big B is the undisputed king on Twitter among Bwood celebs

Big B is the undisputed king on Twitter among Bwood celebs

MUMBAI: In his career spanning more than four decades, no actor has been able to surpass the craze of Amitabh Bachchan. And now the shehansha of Bollywood seems to be ruling the social-media space as well. According to the “Bollywood Twitter Index”, a social media analytics report released by To The New, a leading digital services ecosystem in India, AB has been crowned the undisputed king of Twitter among his Bollywood counterparts.

The report is based on a research by ThoughtBuzz, the social media analytics’ arm of To The New. The Bollywood Twitter Index reveals that Amitabh Bachchan continued to reign over the micro-blogging site with the highest number of followers, clocking a growth of 87 per cent over the last year, followed by the Khan-brigade – Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. Making an appearance at number five, Priyanka Chopra is the only actress in the top five Indian movie celebrities’ list.

Despite gaining the maximum number of followers over the last one year with 151 per cent increase, Bollywood’s Dhak-Dhak girl, Madhuri Dixit narrowly missed making it to the list this year. She was nudged out by B-town fashionista, Sonam Kapoor, who hung on to the number 10 position with an 87 per cent increase in followers since last year.

Other significant gainers include Akshay Kumar with a 99 per cent increase and Deepika Padukone with an 82 per cent increase in the number of followers over the last year.

One of the most interesting things to note is that despite being virtually inactive, Aamir Khan has continued to attract fans, having amassed nearly two lakh new followers in the last two months. Aamir’s only tweets in the current year are about narration of his experience of meeting David Cameron, Prime Minister of United Kingdom and #ThankYouSachin during the cricketer’s last test match in Mumbai.

Other revelations that the study makes: Around 27 percent conversations that Bollywood celebrities indulge in on Twitter are about promoting their work or films; around 24 per cent of the tweets are about their personal experiences or general interactions with their fans; the rest of the Twitterverse discussions are based around promoting their own brands (9 per cent), favourite quotes (7 per cent), opinions about specific issues (6 per cent) and social causes (4 per cent).

  • Women should be alluring, says priyanka chopra at agenda Aaj tak

Women should be alluring, says priyanka chopra at agenda Aaj tak

MUMBAI: “A woman should always be alluring, we are made to be alluring, we come from the land of Kamasutra.” Actor Priyanka Chopra, who starred on Day 2 of Agenda AajTak, provided perhaps her most candid thoughts yet in response to hard questions about crimes against women, the role of Bollywood in a larger societal message about women, and what the government needs to do.

“Crimes against women will come down when laws are implemented properly. Laws exist, but there is fearlessness. Unless that fear goes, crimes against women won’t go down,” Priyanka said in response to a question from the BJP’s Anurag Thakur on how the film industry could help in the fight against rape in the backdrop of the December 16 Delhi gangrape. “The film industry is for entertainment. Don’t think society should put the responsibility of the message solely on the film industry. That’s the government’s job,” she said.

Explaining that she still needed to take the big ‘masala’ films in order to be commercially viable for the freedom to do ‘meaningful’ cinema with strong female characters, Priyanka told the audience about her upcoming sport biopic on Indian Olympian boxer and icon Mary Kom.

“Training is on, you’ll see my muscles soon. Mary Kom’s character was difficult. But I believe it needs to be the story of every girl, of how barriers are broken. This is the story of every girl who’s had to break barriers in her life,” said Priyanka.

The actor, who has recently signed on as brand ambassador for GUESS, the “first who isn’t blonde and blue-eyed”, was sporting enough to stand up on stage and show the audience a bit of what training has done for her — some nifty footwork and the boxing stance: “I’m a good boxer now! I’ve picked up a few tricks! I’ve never been sporty in my life, ironically. Have had to turn my life upside down learning a new sport.”

About her relationships and private life, Priyanka said, “I’m private, but I’m not politically correct. I believe that if I give my 90% to the public, the remaining is for my private life and family. I share a lot on social networks. I don’t believe being a public figure means laying bare all details about my life. A part of my life needs to be mine alone. I used to hide the papers when my father was sick, because of the malicious things people wrote about me. My father was my best friend. I could talk to him about anything.”

To the inevitable question: Modi or Rahul, Priyanka played safe. “I’m very politically correct. I refuse to comment on anything political.”

“We are taught that India is a secular country. We don’t need to all think like one person. We don’t live in a dictatorship. We live in a democracy, and we should be proud of it,” she said.

Stranded Evelyn boards an overnight train to reach for work on time

MUMBAI: Some Bollywood stars are known to go out of the way to accommodate their producers, sometimes braving risks and weather. We often hear such episodes of professionalism about Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. Joining the list now is actor Evelyn Sharma, who became popular with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Recently, while she was on her way to shoot for DivyaKhosla Kumar’s Yaariyan in Darjeeling and Sikkim, Evelyn’s flight was rerouted from Bagdogra to Guwahati airport because of a bad storm, leaving her stranded alone with her luggage.

Since the shooting was scheduled for next day, Evelyn decided to take an overnight train from Guwahati to Siliguri to reach her sets on time as she thought it would be a big hassle for any producer to reschedule location shoots.

“Luckily, God sent an angel to help me. The person guided and guarded me throughout the journey – from going to the railway station, arranging for a ticket on a completely booked train, guarding me for 10 hours on the journey, inviting me for lunch in Siliguri and safely dropping me to the car which brought me to the shoot in Sikkim,” revealed Evelyn though concealing the name and gender of this ‘angel’.

“Without the timely help, I would have been lost in Guwahati, as my phone was dead and the flight personnel did not help at all,” she adds.

The entire film crew was impressed with Evelyn’s bravery of taking the train alone at night, just to make sure she reaches on time.

Yaariyan is the directorial debut of T-Series’ head honcho Bhushan Kumar’s wife Divya Khosla Kumar and releases on 31 January next year.

  • Krrish Kross Konnection

    Krrish Kross Konnection

MUMBAI: With Krrish, Rakesh Roshan, the most original grass root filmmaker in Hindi cinema, turned contemporary when he blended his old school emotion-romance-music formula into a superhero film. While he maintained all the necessary ingredients of Indian cinema, he gave his hero, Hrithik Roshan, extra ordinary powers which he uses generally to help people till his situation is challenged. In Krrish 3, Roshan decides to pit his superhero, Hrithik, with another such power, a super villain, Vivek Oberoi. In the process, Roshan compromises on things he most cherished that is Indian sentiments of mother’s love, romance, music which has been his forte and a strong script. Here it is a script of convenience. For example, his hero, who could not fly, starts doing so when the villain flies!!

    Producer: Rakesh Roshan.
    Director: Rakesh Roshan.
Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Kangna Ranaut, Vivek Oberoi, Arif Zakaria, Rajpal Yadav, Rakhee Tandon.

In short, what Roshan has done is to take an age old family story and tried to fit it into a sci-fi superhero movie where, even holding the hero’s family captive by the villain is straight out of last century melodramas. The film is a virtual yellow pages of endorsements as, soon as the film starts you see a number of products being plugged.

Hrithik continues with his stint as the saviour superhero as Krrish 3 opens. But his sudden absence from his work costs him his job as he is presumed to be goldbricking. That is when the villain, Vivek decides to make his presence felt. He uses his genius for all the bad purposes. He is wheelchair bound with only his face and two index fingers functioning but which are enough to cause heavy damage or hurt someone. To cure his condition, Vivek needs a bone marrow from a person matching his own DNA. Having failed to find it in a human being, he mixes his DNA with various animals to create what he calls ‘maanvar’ a mix of maanav and janwar. To finance his experiments, he needs huge sums and to raise which he spreads dangerous viruses which kill thousands in a matter of minutes then cash in on it by marketing its antidote. He starts with   an African country and looking at its success, decides to attack India next.

The deadly virus is spread using public transport, waterlines etc. The doctor who had found an antidote for the virus after learning of the plight of the African country has been killed by one of Vivek’s maanvars, Kangna Ranaut who is made mixing human and chameleon DNAs and, hence, can change forms.

When the virus spreads in Mumbai and people drop dead every minute, Hrithik Sr (father of Krrish) observes that neither he, Krrish nor Priyanka Chopra, pregnant with Krrish’s baby, have been affected by the deadly virus. He realises that the family’s superpower makes them immune and their DNA can be used to devise an antidote. That is achieved and the city is saved. This makes Oberoi a very, very angry man but also makes him think that there has to be a connection  between him and  Hrithik Sr since only one kind of DNA would be able to kill the virus and in some way they both must share the same DNA! It is midway through the film and the tone is set for confrontations as Oberoi wants Hrithik Sr in his custody, for in him lies his own cure.

Oberoi lets loose his variety of maanvars on Krrish household to kidnap Hrithik Sr which demonstrates their strength. The attempt is foiled by Krrish but in the process of doing so, Priyanka is hurt. Admitted to a hospital, she is whisked away from there and Kangna takes her form and takes her place. Her job is to find out how the antidote for the virus was invented. While she fails to do that and only ends up falling in love with Krrish and also imagines a love duet with him.

Hrithik Sr thinks that there is something curious about the events and feels its answer lies in Singapore where (in the earlier version of the film) Naseeruddin Shah had held him captive for long in a comatose condition. He does find out the secret behind Oberoi’s birth but is kidnapped by Oberoi’s goons. Oberoi needs his bone marrow to cure himself; because he has to be on his feet for the final showdown with Krrish.

The long drawn dual between Oberoi and Krrish, spread over instalments, starts in the former’s den and moves out to various streets, skies and rooftops with a lot of destruction and a generous dose of special effects. The film ends with a promise of the next instalment of Krrish series as Priyanka delivers a baby boy with superpowers.

Rakesh Roshan is handicapped by a solid script and an interesting story to tell. The scene where Krrish races over buildings to save an airplane with locked front wheels as he jumps on to them and forces them open to make a safe landing possible promises a lot. But, the film moves only on predictable lines. With other ingredients like romance and music missing, the director has to count mainly on special effect sequences which, of course, are very well executed. The film has just three songs of which Raghupati Raghav is well choreographed while Dil tuhi bata… has some melody element. Background score is effective. Dialogue could have provided some one-liner exchanges between good and evil but are a letdown being of mediocre kind.  The film has few characters of which Hrithik excels in both the roles he plays. Kangna shines in a negative role. Priyanka has limited scope and is good. Vivek Oberoi makes an impact in certain scenes till wheelchair bound but turned into an ironman in the climax restricts him.

Krrish 3 does not in any way better its earlier version, Krrish; on the contrary it disappoints on some counts. However, due to solo Diwali release and a long gap for a Hrithik film to hit the screens will benefit as the film’s brand equity assures at least one time view for most cine-goers.
