‘Saturday Night Fever’ actor to make Bollywood debut with Shekhar Kapur’s ‘Paani’

NEW DELHI: Hollywood actor John Travolta is set to make his debut in India with director Shekhar Kapur’s highly anticipated film ‘Paani’.

Speaking on the sidelines of the recently concluded International Indian Film Academy Awards in Tampa Bay, Florida, the actor said he is “open to working in Hindi films if I like the story and my part.”

Travolta, who received the most popular International star of all time award has known Kapur for some time. Even though the script does not have songs, Shekhar said he will put a song to make it truly Bollywood.

“I cannot deny music and dance in my life,” the star of the iconic musicals “Grease” and “Saturday Night Fever” said, citing it as a reason for his special love for Hindi cinema. “It is part of my soul. This is part of most of Bollywood’s films, and I agree with it,” he added.

The 60-year-old admitted that he enjoys Bollywood’s energy and life. “Hollywood can take lessons from Bollywood, which has a lot of unabashed confidence while film- making,” he said.

Travolta, who shared stage with Priyanka Chopra and Hrithik Roshan at the awards ceremony, said he has watched a number of Hindi films like ‘3 Idiots,’ ‘Lagaan,’ ‘Krissh’ and ‘Ram Leela.’ He also said he loved actress Priyanka Chopra’s debut music album ‘Exotic,’ and praised Deepika Padukone’s performance in ‘Ram Leela.’

  • DS Group celebrates ‘goodness of humanity’ with Priyanka Chopra

DS Group celebrates ‘goodness of humanity’ with Priyanka Chopra

MUMBAI: In recognition of her undeniable talent, immense popularity, her humanitarianism and her innate shine of goodness, Rajnigandha Silver Pearls has named Priyanka Chopra as their Brand Ambassador.  She features in the new TVC announcing the launch of saffron blended, silver coated cardamom seeds, ‘Rajnigandha Silver Pearls’ from the house of DS Group.

The new 60 sec TVC celebrates the little gestures of goodness that we make despite our hectic day-to-day life, with the slogan ‘Achai ki ek Alag hi Chamak hoti hai ’. The new catchphrase re-emphasizes on the brand’s belief that real goodness always shines through in our words and deeds, and sets us apart as heroes of real life.

The newly signed brand ambassador Priyanka Chopra says, “I truly do believe that ‘Achai ki ek Alag Chamak hoti hai ’!  There is an innate goodness in all of us and I think in today’s time its hugely important to spread as much love and positivity as possible. I am delighted to have been chosen as the brand ambassador of Rajnigandha Silver Pearls.  It not only a delicious and refreshing product but also a brand that promotes such positive messages, which is something the world really needs.”

Commenting on this occasion Mr. Rajeev Jain, Senior General Manager, Marketing, Dharampal Satyapal Ltd. said, “Rajnigandha brand has always been a hallmark of achievement and our new product ‘Rajnigandha Silver Pearls’ that shares the same brand’s DNA, can be seen as symbolic of individuals who are successful and yet uphold a strong humanistic approach to life. Priyanka Chopra has been appointed as the brand ambassador as she is an epitome of a global achiever, and at the same time a grounded and humble person who is always ready to give time and effort for a good cause. The TV commercial highlights exactly this aspect of her life”.

The film has been created by Dentsu Marcom and narrates the story of a successful film-star who has a massive following because of her inherent goodness. It shows interwoven scenes that narrate examples of little acts of goodness— Priyanka Chopra is seen performing an Indian classical dance, making a moment special for a little boy, throwing a scarf at the screaming sailors and surprising an old woman with a birthday cake.

Finally we see the classical dance performance culminating in her final act of goodness where Priyanka Chopra calls her team for the final bow in front of the audience to acknowledge their contribution to the applause that she has received. It is in the journey back home, that she tastes Rajnigandha Silver Pearls and her chauffer looks through the mirror to realize that ‘achchai ki ek alag chamak hoti hai’.

Titus Upputuru, National Creative Director, Dentsu Marcom says “Rajnigandha Silver Pearls is saffron blended silver-coated cardamom seeds (Elaichi) Cardamom  is good for health, silver has shine, so we came up with ‘goodness shines’. At the same time we also considered the lineage of Rajnigandha which stood for success and achievement. When we decided to go ahead with Priyanka Chopra as the face of the brand, we thought let’s show stardom in a new light. Thus was born ‘achchai ki ek alag chamak hoti hai’”.

The film is shot like a trailor of a Hollywood movie, complimented by a special song as the background score with the lyrics ‘Dil bada toh tu bada’, which has been written and sung to an Indian melody to bring out the idea that one is only as big as one’s heart is. This is an ATL & BTL campaign which will encompass print, outdoor, radio, digital and OOH mediums to extend the thought of ‘Acchai ki ek alag chamak hoti hai’.

  • Is B’wood moving towards equality?

    Is B’wood moving towards equality?

MUMBAI: It has been spoken about many times, but this year seems to attest that Bollywood is actually shunning gender-biases and is moving towards equality. That is what is evident from the movies releasing this year. Many movies of the year are giving prominence to its female actors.

While Parineeti Chopra’s character in Hasee Toh Phasee is a well-etched out role with eccentricities that makes it stand out among all the other characters in the film (even the hero Siddharth Malhotra), in this week’s release – Highway – Alia’s character has been written with similar fervor as well. In fact, Alia’s father and one of the most lauded filmmakers of the country – Mahesh Bhatt – thinks that Alia has ‘lived’ the role of her lifetime.

“Thank you Imtiaz Ali for making Alia ‘live’ the role of her life time. The women of our country will empathise with this heartfelt tale,” wrote Bhatt on Facebook.

In the months to come, Bollywood is going to spring up many such surprises where women will get a chance to not just live their lives but raise the bar too. Many movies with strong women characters and centered around women are going to make a mark at the big screen.

There’s Queen starring Kangana Ranaut that tells the story of a girl whose wedding is called off when her fiancé passes away and she, instead of crying over her situation, decides to move on. The focus of the film is on the character growing up as an individual.

Another one in the pipeline is Gulaab Gang starring Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla among host of other female actors. Again a woman-centric film based around the activist group Gulaabi Gang, shows how women have started getting prominence in the film industry with diverse being written for them.

One of the other movies being looked forward to is Bobby Jasoos starring Vidya Balan in which she portrays the character of a sleuth. The film is not just being anticipated as Indian cinema’s answer to detective films but probably is also one of the first in India to be bringing in a female actor to play a sleuth.

Mary Kom’s biopic with Priyanka Chopra portraying the sportstar in the film is another addition to the list. While biopics are any way not too regular in India, one on a female sportstar is something very rare. And thus this is one movie that every movie buff is waiting for, especially after Irrfan and Farhan Akhtar have raised the bar of getting in to the skin of the real life people they portrayed in Paan Singh Tomar and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Priyanka is surely being watched out for in this upcoming movie.

Doesn’t it seem to be a great year for women in the film industry?

  • Gunday: Old wine rebottled

    Gunday: Old wine rebottled

MUMBAI: Gunday is a story based in 1970s and 80s. And, in keeping with the era, the story is also what was called mass masala in those days. What is new about it? Well, after seeing a lineup of films with Delhi background, this has Kolkata as the backdrop.

Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor are two orphaned refugee kids from Bangladesh who join the tide of other refuges and enter a refugee camp in Bengal. Wanting to cash in on their innocence, an officer and a tout decide to use them as conduits to transport guns outside the camp. When the officer gets the urge for a woman and finds none in the camp, he decides to use one of the two boys. This leads to the boys committing their first crime as the officer is shot dead. They make their escape on a goods train carrying coal and come to Kolkata.

While doing odd jobs, they dream big, which of course, is not easy to achieve unless one gets into illegal dealings. They see the use of coal all around and think of the wagon train they travelled in and decide to steal from wagons and sell coal at half the market price. It is the 1980s now and the lads have grown up and graduated to stealing entire trainloads of coal instead of just a few kilos, in the process killing the earlier don and his whole gang. With that materialises the car and the home they dreamt of all along. The boys are more than blood brothers, so inseparable that they even share the same bed!

    Producer: Aditya Chopra.

    Director: Ali Abbas Zafar.

Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor,
Irrfan Khan, Saurabh Shukla. (Darshan Gurjar and Jayesh
    V Kardak as young Ranveer
    and Arjun.)

The two soon start other businesses and even have a logo designed for their ventures: BB (for Bala and Bikram, the screen names). While they have been busy building an empire and establishing themselves as the most feared dons of Kolkata, the police chief is busy collecting a horde of files on their crimes. As the duo looks unstoppable, the chief hands over the case to one cop who can stop them – Irrfan Khan. But they remain unperturbed as even with so many files, the police had no proof or witnesses so far. Irrfan takes on the onus to collect proof against them. He starts his job by planting a mole around them.

The duo has financed a night club and gets the privilege of inaugurating the club. There they set their eyes on Priyanka Chopra, the club’s star performer. Both fall in love with her instantly. Two men in love with same woman, just the situation that is enough to put their friendship to the test. Circumstances are created whereby not only the friendship is broken but now the friends for life are ready to kill each other. The enmity starts with a no-holds-barred fistfight and later leads to the use of guns.

As the film gets into the latter parts post interval, things become predictable. The surprises don’t surprise the viewer.

With few characters to carry it, the film is too lengthy at 153 minutes. It could have been shorter. With a loose script, the direction is copybook, offering no sparks of genius. Kolkata locations are exploited well. The film’s music works to its advantage with three songs having popular appeal in Asalaam- e-ishqum…, Jashn- e- ishq…… and Tune maari entriyaan and has helped the film get a better opening. The lead actors, Ranveer and Arjun are not really known for histrionics but having nothing negative against their names so far, they draw the young crowd. However, they needed a younger girl to fall in love with rather than Priyanka whom one would consider in the senior league. Irrfan and Saurabh Shukla are good as usual.

Gunday has had a good opening all over (Delhi, NCR and UP affected a bit earlier in the day due to rains). With solo release as an advantage and its two young heroes, the film has everything working for it at the box office.

  • Star World on a route to decode men

Star World on a route to decode men

MUMBAI: With the rising number of feminists and groups supporting the female issues, the issues concerning men in India have almost never been paid much heed to. Not just at the level of making laws, but the concerns of men have been neglected even on entertainment channels with almost no show aimed at them. But fret not! Here’s something to change that.

Following its success of distinguished celebrity chat shows like Koffee With Karan and the Front Row with Anupama Chopra, English entertainment channel Star World is experimenting with a new show centered around men. Gentlemen’s Code, a six-episode series being hosted by author-journalist Aatish Taseer, which launches this Sunday at 8 pm, attempts to break the code that is the new-age man and delve into the very essence of what it takes to be a modern man.

For a channel that is always open to new content, this show is an opportunity to reach out to new viewers. Star English channels business head Kevin Vaz says that since this is one of its kind shows it makes it even more interesting for the viewers. “We look for content that brings a fantastic television experience to our viewers.”

From hunter-gatherers to stay-at-home fathers, men have refashioned and redefined their roles over centuries. Even as the balance of economic, political and social power remains firmly entrenched in their favour, collectively, men have perhaps never faced as much scrutiny, pressure and competition as they do today. The show is an effort to get men to tell what makes them tick and to showcase what they really want. “The content is new, fresh and extremely dynamic and we think that it will be very well received by audiences,” says Vaz as he adds that the choice of someone as unconventional as Aatish Taseer as a host comes out of the fact that he is extremely well-spoken and is the quintessential gentleman.

Aatish on his part, says that while there are many competing views as to what the show is about, his feeling is that it is a show about Indian masculinity at a time when that notion is more fluid—more in flux—than ever before. “The aim of the Gentlemen’s Code is to take a hard look at the psyche of the urban Indian man, but with sympathy, acknowledging that as much as Indian masculinity seems to be going through a kind of crisis, it is as, with all crises, also a time of hope and change,” he says.

And though Aatish, who has authored books like Stranger to History: a Son’s Journey Through Islamic Lands’ (2009); the highly acclaimed translation – Manto: Selected Stories’ (2008); and the novel, The Temple-Goers’ (2010) that was shortlisted for the 2010 Costa First Novel Award, is a self confessed “hopeless TV viewer”.

“I don’t watch much TV at all, save for the news. But I like to think of this as a kind of advantage. I like to believe that it brings a certain freshness to my style and perspective. The production process for someone who has worked in solitude for many years is hard. But there is also something exciting about the energy of other people, something exciting about collaboration,” he remarks.

The most fascinating aspect for Aatish has been the attention that he had to pay to a certain external reality. “After years of concentrating on my interior life, I’ve suddenly been forced to project my personality, to find some kind of balance between how one is and how one comes across. Not easy,” he says.

And since he talks about collaborating with other people, it’s interesting to note that the show is going to have a host of different personalities from various professions including a few celebs like Priyanka Chopra, Anoushka Shankar, John Abraham and R Balki to name a few, there will also be prominent names like Barkha Dutt and Chetan Bhagat on the show.

Every week, Aatish will conduct an interview with an iconic Indian woman, so as to have the scrutiny of the female gaze on men. “A greater range of men will appear on the show too, everyone from little-known family men to big stars like Karan Johar and John Abraham. The aim is to find a shared experience, I suppose, of the themes we cover. Which range from work to sex to style and luxury,” says Aatish.

When quizzed about if there been a pressure on the production unit to make the show appealing to the masses at large by bringing in well-known people, “Our sponsors as well as the channel has been pretty generous: they’ve given us, for the most part, a free hand. But there’s no doubt, TV is a cruel medium, and there is always the pressure to crowd the show with beautiful and famous people. There is also, of course, the pressure to keep things light. But I think that’s good. That lightness of touch—that ability to deal with serious things in an appealing way—is part of television’s tremendous reach, and it should always be kept in mind. It would be a terrible waste if we did a show that no one saw,” Aatish points out.

“The target viewers of the show are the English audience, who is always looking at fresh differentiated content,” says Star India English cluster VP, marketing head, Pallavi Tibrewal. And despite of many differentiated content being aired on many competitor channels, she thinks this show is going to do well. “There is always an audience for everything, I am sure this show will do well too,” she says.

This magazine series that has Chivas as the title sponsor touches on themes including relationships, money, status symbols, style and friendships, amongst others. The show is being promoted on network’s English channels. “We have released one promo and we will be releasing a new episodic promo every week,” informs Tibrewal.

The new age men have something to really look forward to, while women can watch the show to decode the men in their life!
